I think it's a combination of Brzenk having a bad day and Larratt having a great day. The same happened with Denis vs. Larratt. Brzenk beat Larratt after this match a few years later. Larratt can do the same to Denis. I think sometimes that initial shock of how good and strong a guy is can ruin the entire match for you if its your first time "fighting" them.
He's just more cerebral now than ever and his hand and wrist are on another level now than they were even back then. His elbow has never been the same since his operations but if his match with Jerry says anything... his elbow is returning... you never know we might be seeing a true second coming from the big Canadian.
After watching this again, it's so clear that John's wrist was hurt. He still competed nonetheless, but he would've given a much better fight at 100%. That's not, however, to take away from how good Devon was that day.

Devon didn't wanna put John down that last time. Finally beating your hero is extremely mentally/emotionally/spiritually monumental, in a bittersweet way
he was undefeated in 25 years, in the supers, and he is a lot lighter then them. but, he was competing when the sport was still very "amateur" in the states, compared to now. he mastered the technics, and built muscle specific for armwrestling, instead of typical meat head gym rats with big muscle. he is still one of the best, although he now wrestles in his weight category. the sport has come a very long way since his 25 year reign. he is a monster, and grandmaster.

I believe Devon in this condition could beat anyone on the planet! John killed Cyplenkov few months after this match and Devon made ot look easy. Hope he reaches this power again.
Injured is'nt an excuse. Devon is in his 253lb state during this match compare to 2013-2017. That's the only reason why he went to heavyweight matches due to his weight 210lb-220lb
I've spoke to Richard about this personally. In Las Vegas he said he'd never felt anything as strong as Larratt. At the Mike Gould Classic this past weekend he told me that out of everyone (Cyplenkov, Arsen, whoever) his money is on Larratt to win as well. I did not shoot video on our conversations, I guess you'd have to take my word on it.
Dennis has improved a lot during the last decade buddy. Brzenk destroyed him in 2009, but in 2018 he was in beast mode + high level skills. Larrat is better armwrestler now in terms of technique. Not a lot, but better. Obviously far from his strengh peak (2008-2012). With Dennis, all that raw power, hit, and speed is the key. And now he doesn't have them... Not sure if this Devon could win 2018 Cyplenkov, but would have been amazing. Anyway, for me Breznk and Larrat are Legends. Cyplenkov never will be one for me, asumimg he is a chemical reactor. Just imagine Devon or John using those levels of GH and roids during years.....
@@betofernandez5524 Agree with everything you said. Devon is getting bigger tho, after that Dave Chafee match I think he might just have a chance, but not with his left tho. Lets see if Denis can recover first, all that gh and steroid abuse took his toll
@@betofernandez5524 Denis improved by 10% at most since 2008, and improved next to 0% in the area Brzenk was destroying Denis in. It is the same area Chaffee put Denis in many years later. John probably still could give Denis a good match while retired, just because Denis hardly improved that area. If Larratt hooked 2018 Denis, he'd be crushed. If any Larratt hooked 2008 Denis, Larratt would have decent chances only if he can contain Denis' hand. Larratt doesn't have anywhere near the hand to do the same shit Brzenk did to Denis.
Larrett now would beat that Russian dude lol Larrett now would beat Brznek in his prime, what I don't get is how Larrett wins this easily but then when Brznek is 50 & Larretts 40 he loses lmao? But regardless Larrett now would beat anybody, his technique, I.Q, strength etc is at an all time high
I just watched the 30 minute video on Rod Rambo Lennete. I met him during the mid 90s and watched him decimate almost everyone he went up against. I remember him beating Robert Brown who was 6ft 8 when he was 21 years old. Seeing Richard Poole also bought back me.ories of training in Slough behind The White Horse pub. So sorry to hear Rod lost his battle against his illnesses and what an amazing chap he was.
"Pulling John" I believe was filmed in 03' and 04. Even though it came out in '09.The years before that Doc. John was undefeated in "Professional" competition.
Is there a particular technique or techniques the bigger handed guys are using against you that you're feeling uncomfortable dealing with? If so I might be able to compare each scenarios with my own experience pulling bigger handed guys and tell u what I think would be helpful. For me bigger handed, taller forearmed guys are definitely more difficult to toproll so I try to drop them down into a low hook.
Mad respect for both of these TITANS. Larratt is Beast and an Einstein Strategist. Brzenk has been a winner for a very long time. These 2 men are the best of the best. Doesn't matter where they come from. They're Beast Humans.
Both have earned a great deal of respect from many including myself. How very interesting if you could take Devon back in time or transport John of 12 or so years ago to today, then have these two go at it in the pull! Who would win, I don't know. Though I am no expert in this sport. It seems to me a safe bet that it wouldn't be as easy for Devon to win over a John Brzenk of yesteryear, if matched in age. They are both so great; and great ambassadors for the sport.
I've never seen David Larratt so concentrated and cool. That is the way to greatest success. You can influence a lot of positive things by concentrating on the right process.
Brzenk is a master technician. I'm not sure why "fans" cannot acknowledge the abilities and talents of all of the top guys right now. Clearly Baigent is great, Brzenk is the GOAT, Larratt is incredible, Cyplenkov is coming on strong, and Voevoda was a phenom.
This match was about 10 years too late for anyone to come to any conclusions. The age difference along with the weight difference is just too much. Things were more normal (meaning Larratt lost) in the 2015 match simply because Larratt is starting to age too.
no its quite simple. larrat was actually not in top shape in 2015..and a lot lighter than he is here..not taking anythign away from john he did masterfully vs devon in 2015..the way he made sure he pinned his arm without the straps..but devon just wasnt in prime shape he had surgery and all that..he is stronger now again but still NOTA heavyweight as he was in this vid..a good 20-30 pounds lighter
Speaking of exercises, I also like to do pinch grip exercises because they thicken the base of your thumb which is good for toprolling and making the guy harder to grip around your hand. It's also helpful when in a finger pull (or thumb pull or whatever, the moment when both are toprolling and about to slip). Also, never intentionally give up your wrist curl unless you have really strong tricep press or side pressure that can isolate the guy's bicep.
Also, does it hurt near the elbow tendon of the bicep? or close to the shoulder tendon? the muscle belly in the middle itself? Can you tell whether it's the outer bicep that hurts or the inner one? The whole bicep? I would say it's probably not a tear but just a stressed out tendon case. I wouldn't worry too much.
Devon is definitely one of my favorite pullers of all time, and it goes without saying he was at his very best right here, in terms of strength and confidence. But John the 🐐 will always be #1. As for the match , every champion has a period of time when they're simply unbeatable. And this was "No limits " time. Even though he convincingly beat John here, what makes John the GOAT... is he went on to beat Larratt at a later date. What makes that so incredible is usually when a former champ loses his reign , they seldom regain any high status again. They get older, they have too many injuries and there's always a new young strong challenger waiting in the wings. But John Brzenk is NO ordinary Champ. Lol Even to this very day , at an age most wouldn't even consider competing , nevermind dominating, John is still a force. Especially in his weight group. Had the Top 8 happened as scheduled, it would not have surprised anyone if John won it all ...or finished top 3. And considering he would be pulling the best in the World, who are all about Half his age, that's why he is the Goat. Everybody already knows how "Prime" John Brzenk handled his business in ALL weight groups but what makes John the undisputed GOAT is his longevity in the sport. Unmatched by anyone. With that said, this video is all Devon and he was a beast when on top. Both hands. Great video...
In this match I think John's wrist was in a horrible condition. You can see he is applying pressures in right directions but can't budge Devon. This is not to take away from Devon's victory because he is the best RH puller in the world right now. However, remember the lighter version of John who pushed Devon to the limits in practice before the Arsen match. That John if I recall correctly was lighter than John here but was relatively injury free. So imagine heavier, injury free Brzenk vs Devon.
I know John took a few pins over the course of his career. "Literally" Undefeated; perhaps not, but nevertheless the most dominate athlete in the sport. Yes; professional= these specific events
You've got it backwards. longer arms are a disadvantage in armwrestling. Thats a scientific fact. Even john has said that before in a written interview. Shorter length arms are better leverage. Which makes devon even more of a monster considering he's ranked #1
trashbash2001 Actually its not a disadvantage. There are advantages and disadvantages to both in terms of leverage. In this match for example, when you get set up like Larratt is with a higher hand, the match is basically over if you have good back pressure to go along with it.
It really depends on what technique you use as well. Longer arms have an advantage with the top rolls, as opposed to shorter arms which have a better chance with the hook.
Zach Creel i know, i was merely pointing to the fact that a lot of people think that the length of an arm (longer) automatically makes you strong, and thats backwards. Not talking about hand positioning.
@@quiet216 John went onto to destroy Dennis Cyplenkov in prime shape 4 weeks after this. So the injury definitely wasn't anything significant. Devon was honestly quite trash until around 07 where he went from barely beating Ron Bath to absolutely destroying Ron Bath in a single year. Devon had another encounter with John in 2010 where Devon won in round 1. He started having elbow problems in his right around 2012 and got surgery in 2013. He was out of form when he returned in 2015. If you look at all the practices matches that year, Devon was getting destroyed by everyone on the table, not just John.
@@KevinLuWX Denis in 2008 was like the softest version of him. He wasn’t that impressive compared to his prime. John and Devon didn’t have a match in 2010. I know all about the injuries and details. It’s okay to brush off Johns injuries in 2008 but it’s totally fine to make excuses for Larratt against Tim Brenson in 2012. John even said in 2008 “Devon’s gonna kill me in 3 weeks if Neil sets this up”. Devon knew John wouldn’t be ready but he insisted and John wouldn’t want to let Neil down so the match happened. John had many matches and tournaments that year but a fresh trained Devon comes out of the bleachers and wins an unprepared John. Not taking anything away from Devon. It would’ve been a historic match if John was in good shape.
@@quiet216 John and Devon had a practice match in 2010. Where Devon gave John the advantage by letting him drive first. Despite that, Devon still bled John dry and would have likely resulted in 6-0 if that was a supermatch format. John did give more resistance than he did in this match though. John probably knew in 2008 that he had poor chances against Devon because he was #1 ranked and endurance was going to favor Devon in a supermatch format. John and Ron bath was pretty even matched in 2008, yet Devon tore through him like nothing. Dennis wasn't at his best in 2008, but still very strong regardless. Bzrenk's phenomenal performance performance at that event as whole showed that he was still very strong at the time.
The bicep is ok now, hurt again at training but some guy at training gave in a deep massage and though it was scar tissue from previous training. Can you advise how to get a much stronger hand and grip? Heavy grippers? I have a set of 6.
@DANTEDALLARM Thanks for the info Dante, I wonder why they didnt try and pin each other? Maybe to avoid injury? John said on northboard that Devon felt incredibly strong, do you know if Devon said anything about how John felt?
In my opinion both in their absolute primes I think in a best of 5 Devon would win 3-1, he is just too big and has just as good counter moves and table iq as John, I say he is the best ever👐😬 absolute destruction
@@ricardolafou5921 John beat Devon shortly after his elbow surgery. Devon was so weak in 2015 he was even getting destroyed by middle weights in practice.
For finger pressure, I do thick handle stuff like everyone else + some pinch grip stuff (plate lifting). For backpressure, I do wrist kick ups, and I also started doing finger push ups and finger-tip pull ups cuz I think they'll help with training my hand muscles. There are 3 visible hand muscles, the thumb base, pinky base, and the one between your thumb and index when u look at the back of ur hand. The last one is responsible for lifting your index finger which helps with posting.
Also I find that once u set the deep hook, the hand size and strength doesn't matter much and it becomes a contest of arm strength because your hand is protected. It's much harder to roll out into an already cupped in wrist than a straight wrist at the beginning. But if the tall forearmed, large handed guy doesn't keep his knuckles high then posting toproll can also work against his lowered fingers.
Jeaust3516 lol john the best ever he is champion for 3 decades deovan is already 40years old n he is known for 4 years only so if you might 10 ur old boy
Those long forearms are SO hard to overcome. The natural downward curve acclimation to the shorter arms is an advantage from the outset. Larratt is a monster for sure, as is John a legend for the ages who should never hang his head.
@@Lunarpollo5622 lmao Devon in his prime would destroy denis, plus John destroyed denis months ago before the match and larrat won easily. Todd was pure cheating under the table its not even excuse its just facts
It Is obvious That the taller guy has the advantage, simply by the fact of having his elbow closer to his body moreover using a bigger Group of muscles and ending up with as smaller angle among arm, forearm and body, while the other competitor, the smaller happens the total opposite, without power because There Is no leverage.
Worth to mention is that John is currently ranked: #1 Heavyweight right hand #2 Heavyweight left hand #4 Super Heavyweight John is 48 years old, weigh 85-90kg and have dominated the sport since he was 18, and still dominates his own weight class while beeing highly competitive in the Super Heavyweight. Devon Laratt is a Super Heavyweight armwrestler at 114kg, (110+kg), and is ranked #3 in his weightclass. He is very promising and could be #1 soon.
This was the handing over the crown moment, Brzenk realized he was up against someone just as technical as him but a bigger stronger version. Devon was injury free and v strong here no doubt but i don't think this Devon beats the Devon that beat Todd recently. Despite the change in style due to injuries. Todays version of Devon is beastly, i don't think this old version of Devon would hang with the E Europeans of today.
Does it hurt even when you're doing nothing? Or just when you armwrestle or lift something with your bicep? I'm not a therapist but ya definitely rest and constant massage. Cuz pulling without getting fully recovered will let the injury persist (prevent from being fully healed) and might make it chronic like in the case of Brzenk.
They are on very different levels. However, I would like to see that too. I saw the school boy and his brother being destroyed by a guy called dickie spiroff at a competition. This guy (spiroff) put up a match against larrat and is pretty good but he is not in the top. Needless to say, he lost. Devon is just amazing.
Kegan Gowen John was born in Illinois, he is American, in order for him to be polish he has to be born in Poland, maybe his parents or grandparents were born in Poland and are polish but he is not
Definitely the hook was my first natural move, toproll I've only learnt since going to training. Pretty strong in a hook, though I struggle to get a good grip with a strong big hand. Any advice?
It's a very good example of a bad day for the much superior puller. On that same year John won: 1 - World Tittle: Right 4-2 over Dimitry Kochiev (209+lbs) 2 - U.S. National Championship on two cathegories: Both right and left 3 - 6x0 over Michael Todd on Arm Wars Super Match Just to mention the most important fights of that year the lost to Larratt. For the list goes on and on and on. Edit: Man! Next year he was World Champion again! 5-1 over Cyplenkov (209+ lbs)!
Yeah, undoubtedly one of the best shapes devon has been in, I don't think there is a man that could beat devon in his prime. And yes i know that john was unbeatable for 30 years but he didn't have as much of a competition as devon has had, devon has faced best of the best
When doing wrist curls, you can adjust the weight in such a way that you can train either your pinky side of your wrist or thumb side of your wrist. When doing dumbbell wrist curls, take a bench that is about 40 cm high and kneel down and then when you tuck in your elbow to the left side as possible (when you're wrist curling right handed) then it trains your pinky side of the wrist and when you do it normally it would stress the thumb side more.
I have no idea why I like armwrestling so much.

After watching this again, it's so clear that John's wrist was hurt. He still competed nonetheless, but he would've given a much better fight at 100%. That's not, however, to take away from how good Devon was that day.

Devon didn't wanna put John down that last time. Finally beating your hero is extremely mentally/emotionally/spiritually monumental, in a bittersweet way
thanks. been looking for it forever.
Who's here after Devon vs Michael 2021?
he was undefeated in 25 years, in the supers, and he is a lot lighter then them. but, he was competing when the sport was still very "amateur" in the states, compared to now. he mastered the technics, and built muscle specific for armwrestling, instead of typical meat head gym rats with big muscle. he is still one of the best, although he now wrestles in his weight category. the sport has come a very long way since his 25 year reign. he is a monster, and grandmaster.
Devon is so good at bleeding his opponents dry.
this video is a masterclass of Devon Larrat. I love John but the armwrestle style of Larrat´s is unbelieveble.

Whos here after Devon demolished Todd?
I believe Devon in this condition could beat anyone on the planet! John killed Cyplenkov few months after this match and Devon made ot look easy. Hope he reaches this power again.
Radoslav Stoev John was injured.
Injured is'nt an excuse. Devon is in his 253lb state during this match compare to 2013-2017. That's the only reason why he went to heavyweight matches due to his weight 210lb-220lb
He was 248lbs actually.
injured is excuse you cancer
@@dodododes Denis smashed devon haha
My memory actually forgot Devon beat John without strap from round 2..damn
And John asked for the strap after 4. I wonder if John has watched this match anytime recently.
My favorite math of all time. Glad i was 10 feet away to watch this happen
This Devon beats Cyplenkov's right arm with medium difficulty.
I love this comment mate !
Thank you that's very informative.
"Pulling John" I believe was filmed in 03' and 04. Even though it came out in '09.The years before that Doc. John was undefeated in "Professional" competition.
John is a legend!!! 😤
Larrat the beast that crash them
At this point Larrat is a legend too
Devon is a Legend
Is there a particular technique or techniques the bigger handed guys are using against you that you're feeling uncomfortable dealing with? If so I might be able to compare each scenarios with my own experience pulling bigger handed guys and tell u what I think would be helpful. For me bigger handed, taller forearmed guys are definitely more difficult to toproll so I try to drop them down into a low hook.
Omg Devons arms are so much bigger now! Devon and John share the GOAT title imo
Levan
@@maalikserebryakov other than winning he hasnt done much in terms of the progression of the sport not like those 2 atleast. Not yet
100%
Congratulations!! Devon is really working hard to win the LEGEND
+Nikos A john has defeated 600 pound guy too
+Nikos A Brzenk has beat him since.
lol exactly
James Bond
no its quite simple. larrat was actually not in top shape in 2015..and a lot lighter than he is here..not taking anythign away from john he did masterfully vs devon in 2015..the way he made sure he pinned his arm without the straps..but devon just wasnt in prime shape he had surgery and all that..he is stronger now again but still NOTA heavyweight as he was in this vid..a good 20-30 pounds lighter
That isn't the point. Relatively it is closer when they are both of age. 6 vs 12 year old is not the same as 19 vs 25. Get it?
Thank you.
6'6" mesomorph freak, These guys r the muts nuts! BMF
the beginning of the second round so diesel how john stopped the toproll
Thank you,
That makes it more clear.
Lol
Even to this very day , at an age most wouldn't even consider competing , nevermind dominating, John is still a force.
Two of the greatest💪
I just started pulling on a practice table with a group, any idea how long it takes to get significantly stronger on the table?
I know John took a few pins over the course of his career. "Literally" Undefeated; perhaps not, but nevertheless the most dominate athlete in the sport. Yes; professional= these specific events
devon has freakish long arms ...and its precisely why he wins. The leverage of it. I don't take anything away from John.
Devon used to struggle against John though
Dat strenght about Devon when he block John is really unbelievable. Wow
when larratt goes beast mode...

@@quiet216 in 2015 devon had multiple surgeries that weakened him greatly, 2008 - 2012 devon was the best he ever was
@@quiet216 John went onto to destroy Dennis Cyplenkov in prime shape 4 weeks after this.

No. Devon wins because of endurance.
Devon Larrat is the best, there is no doubt!

What is the rotator? Thanks for your answers.
Larrat used his full arsenal of techniques in those matches great to watch from a beginners view point
I think that version of Devon beats the Devon that faced Todd, but loses to the version of Devon that is about to face Levan.

It's a very good example of a bad day for the much superior puller. On that same year John won:

Just to mention the most important fights of that year the lost to Larratt. For the list goes on and on and on.

This was in 2008.
