Big Brake Upgrade for 99-07 Silverado or Sierra

- UglyTruck gets a bit lower to the ground and a fresh front end, along with a big braking upgrade using some parts that are much easier to find than you might think. The suspension rebuild and lowering portion applies to 2wd NBS Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra between 1999 and 2007, but the brake upgrade only applies to 1999-2004 model year trucks. Stopping your truck is a pretty important part of its performance, and if your stock brakes are due for a replacement, why not upgrade at the same time? I'll show you what it takes to get the job done...

The UglyTruck is a 2000 ECSB 2wd Silverado I picked up a few months ago, and I'm slowly transforming it from a neglected worn out pickup into a reliable and sporty (yet ugly) pickup. So far, its gotten a 4L80e swap and some later model wheels, and next time I'll address the rear suspension to go along with the front. Авто/Мото
Love you getting your boy involved. That’s the dream right there!
its so cool to have him help out
Bro, love that you didn’t cut that part out!
Haha, I mentioned the +1 factory brake upgrade when I watched your wheels video. You can get dual piston rear calipers from a Tahoe/Suburban and a thicker rotor from a police Tahoe to factory upgrade the back. That’s what I did on my 2000 SCLB 4x4.
Love the videos, straightforward and to the point with a friendly feeling.
C thanks, I appreciate that
LT great video brother. Thanks for taking time to share with everyone. Hope you and your family are doing well through this virus ordeal 🇺🇸👍🏁😎
Did this to my 1999 silverado.. night and day difference...thank you for showing hows it done.
Man, I'm so glad you're doing your own thing! Giving me motivation to do my own build. Keep on doing great videos!
Thanks! Will do!
Damn that takes me back! I had a 01 Silverado that never gave me any problems. Boy do I miss that truck!!!
Great video LT. The truck has already come a long way. Interesting piece of info, I didn't know they upgraded the rotors in 2005. I love upgrades that aren't obvious at first glance. I own a 2015 Ram 1500 Reg Cab Short Box 2WD with the 5.7 Hemi and 8 Speed. I was able to use the electric fan out of a 2012 Ram 1500 with a V6 all I had to do was extend the wiring harness a couple inches. (2009 and up Ram 1500's with the V8 use both a clutch style fan run off the water pump and a small electric fan hidden under the fan shroud). It bolted in and looks factory. No programming required the PCM turns the fan on and off automatically. Although you could change the temps at which the fan comes on and off with a programmer if you wanted to. I've had it in my truck for 4 years now and it works perfectly. Also my truck has electric steering so when you open the hood the only things running off of the belt are the alt, a/c and water pump.
Exactly what I need to see I have a 2000 with 280k miles with these same issues. Side bar nice trx I always wanted one
Nice to see the Master Mechanic giving you a hand!!!! Cherish those moments with your little wrench turner, time flies. Next thing you know, he will be graduating H.S. and going out into the world.
I have to 2000 Silverado. Bought from my brother in 2007. Its been a great truck. No real problems with is. Brakes getting done this summer, I think im gonna do this brake upgrade. Good video.
Thanks for the video and the tip! Looks like I'm gonna go to the junkyard and get some parts for an upgrade
I'm doing the same job on my 2001. I was worried I was going to need a spring compressor. Looks like I don't . Thanks for the vid buddy!
Just found the channel, great content! You are a class act! Keep it coming! Fan from now on!
I put the same wheels on my truck. Made such a huge difference in the way it looks.
Totally agree! I love em
Nothing like wrenching on a old truck or car. Best thing ever!!!
Enjoying the content, LT! All the best!
Love the vids LT! Keep them coming.
they are a blast to make
Great content LT, really nice to see you back in front of the camera again. Can’t wait for the next installment of good old ugly lol. Be safe.
Kelly Holbrook thanks, and you as well.
Really enjoying this build. The ugly truck has come a long way already.
Ritchy 173 IG has for sure, a few simple changes make a huge difference
Looking good! I was just putting together a parts list to do an NNBS front brake swap in my gmt-800 Escalade.
more stopping power is a great change to any truck or car
I’m a big fan! Thank you for the content
thanks so much for watching!
Always a good day when the kiddo's come and play in dad's playground :)
@2:30 respect!!! I hope you save that for years to come!
he is by far the best helper I could ask for
What year make & model rotors do I need to ask for when I get them? @@LawrenceTolman
Awesome how to videos! All we need is some part lists and 5 Stars! I got a 2000 gmc sierra 1500 RWD need to rebuild front end would love to get the rack you got but cant find it anywhere!
Sold! I mean, SUBSCRIBED!
Love your video.
I use a tie down strap wrapped around the bottom of the spring and the bottom arm to retain the spring when compressing the spring to keep it from flying out at me.
1999-2006.5 GMT800's are my favorite years for chevy/gmc trucks also.
a very classic body style for sure
I had a 2001 and a 2003 Silverado and did love those trucks, but now I'm driving a 2007 Silverado and one thing is that the steering and braking is so much better then the 01 and 03. I had 4x4's so no rack and pinion steering but my 07 does. I put a 185,000 on my 03 and only thing I did was a water pump, brakes, and the part that makes the 4x4 go into 4x4. And when I say brakes it only did the front so not sure how I got that many miles out of the rear. Funny when I bought the 03 it was that new front end and the dealer asked me if I like it, I told them I thought it looked stupid. So they wanted to know why I bought one and I told them that I cannot see the front end from the drivers seat. But I grew to love it and also the front end on the 07. I also really like the new Silverado front ends now that I have seen them in person.
Nice, my 2000 has 323k on it. Original 4.8l on its 3rd transmission
Lower your truck, raise your shop roof and get a lift!! I'm learning from your vids. Just bought a 2002 Suburban. I'm old and full of arthritis so crawling the floor isn't a good deal for me. I bought a lift. Best car tool I ever bought.
I love the truck and the upgrades so far. Would love to find one like this locally just to have a truck.
thanks! they are a fun body style to work on, and they are pretty affordable also
Just bought a. 99 Chevy 1500 new body. Your video’s are my tutorial’s lol
glad they're helpful!
Great job 👏
Little man's got you this like instantly bro love seeing fathers doing their fartherly duties while at work pass it on the world need more good mechanics and fathers
Nice i love it...these trucks are awsome i got a 03
i do like the 03+ cateye front ends as well
You got me hooked on those wheels
The newer wheels look good on these trucks. I have a set on both of my 04s. I like to run them with the letters out as well but the black around the letters seem to come off of the tires which I cant stand. But they look good and look good on yours as well.
Great videos. Thanks! My 04 has 320K on it and I did not do lower arms or coils but did lower ball joints (PITA). I bought Monroe reflex shocks and was unhappy with the resulting ride. I dont blame the shocks quite yet: I suspect its time for coils and for cab mount bushings
cab mounts can make a big difference for sure
Very clear and good content!
Much appreciated!
Awesome video! Thanks
Also nice choice on the Bilstien shocks. I wanted those for my truck but they were just too pricey for me at the time. I ended up getting KYB Mono Max shocks all around. Got the fronts for $40 (Canadian Dollars) because some guy ordered front shocks for his Ram but the 2009 and up 4WD Rams have Struts in the front where as the 2WD Rams have shocks in the front.
they do have a great ride quality for sure, but are priced a bit steep...
Good work!

Love this !
damn i bet that truck drove so damn nice. Quite jealous honestly, been wanting to do this to mine for a long time, thing is i dont have the rack and pinion style.
3k subs is insane!! I forgot to sub last time.. Boom done
Thanks a bunch! It’s good to see it growing
Love the break up grade
it stops very well now
Back to doing more interesting things after helping dad with his truck! Now we know who’s getting the truck done LOL
Thank you foreal dude. You just gave me courage to do mine myself. My shocks breaks and everything are shot.
Thanks for your time I look foward to doing this project with my son.
Glad I could help its pretty straightforward work
What is the proper name for that caliper bracket so I can track it down. Is the rear the same and is this a part I can buy from a 2005? Thanks in advance brother.
Looking good buddy!
Rusty Wrenches thanks!
You can also use the 2019-2020 Silverado rotors and calipers which are 13.5" rotors and 4 piston calipers. The only thing that you would need to do is to use 4 spacers or washers that are around .155" in thickness. These go in between the calipers and the spindles. This will center the calipers on to the rotors. I`m doing this conversion to my 2004 Suburban. The total cost that I have invested in this conversion is $492.89 including the cost for the GM 84847749 ceramic brake pads $107.02. It is also recommended that 18" or bigger wheels and tires are used.
New subscriber. Great videos on this build ..
Awesome, thank you!
I want to do a dual piston caliper conversion on the rear of my 2018 Silverado 1500
Thks for video found me a 8.1 $1500 177 th miles
A note: That factory "Big Brake" upgrade needs 17" wheels minimum. Stock 2000 1500 wheels where 16" FYI
I should've mentioned that for sure.
@@LawrenceTolman Dam good content.
You can put newer 2007 rotors and calipers on this old truck. Will give you great breaking
Do you have the links to the Upper Control arms also? As well as the shocks you use? I’m trying to do this to my 2006 silverado as well, thanks!
Nice to have a good helper lol
If I may suggest, get Dirt King alignment cams for the upper arms. Even though its not a 4wd, they lock the arms in place a lot better than the ho hum factory pieces.
good tip, I'll have to check em out!
Random question LT, application is a 1995 c1500 stepside (show trucks usa conversion) single cab, what would you recommend for a brake upgrade for that?
What brake hose am I suppose to get with the 2005 brake caliper and mounting bracket upgrade
hi, Watching your vid inspired me to upgrade my front end. I have one questions regarding Big Brake / Caliper upgrade.
I have stock 17" steel rims. IF i put on the Bigger Rotors, 13inch and 05 caliper bracket. Will my Rim RUB? or will clear no problem? what do think.
What did you need from the junkyard? The 2005 caliper bracket?
I have a couple questions. I have the same model truck only thing is it’s a long bed and white. I had gotten hit on the passenger door side. Making a dent in the door and framing. To the point where I can’t the door. I’ve been wanting to getting it to repaired but just curious on how to go about it.
I’m puttin lift coil springs on my truck. 2 inch coils, with 3 inch spindles. I’m terrified of the coil springs lol
If you swap your rear brakes off a 99-06 tahoe use the rear brackets caliper & rotors if your currently on rear discs you go from a single piston to a 2 piston caliper & the rotors are a inch bigger also
TVIcelink I’ve got a set on standby for when I tackle the rear end.
Didn't see you mention what wheel diameters are needed to clear the bigger rotors and calipers? My 2000 Sierra 1500 Z71 is still running the original 16" alloy rims...
I tried to help my dad do car repairs as a kid... He usually would glare at me and sometimes do some cursing if he was to speak to me at all
😂😂😂
My understanding is the 2019 and newer trucks have 13 1/2 inch discs and four piston calibers for an even bigger improvement.
yeah, those new brakes are badass
Or even better, swap on the 2021 Tahoe ppv or Escalade Brembo 6 piston calipers and 16" rotors!!
So do you just order everything for the brakes from a 05 Silverado then ? Calipers, rotors , and pads, also should the new calipers come with brackets? I want to do this to my 04 z71
Can you install 3” lift spindles on a 02” suburban 4WD?
Hello I have a 2003 extended cab
I got a 2.5 -3 inch front lowering springs
My question is will good with standard shocks
I wanted these 4 piston on my 2010 Sierra.. I sourced the calipers.. do I have to run that rotor matching rotor too??.. I do know my drilled slotted 13s are to thick.. any help will be appreciated
With the lower control arms did you use factory parts?
Before I did both the front n rear big brake upgrade, the rear brake was binding n locking up, I did a full repair on the piston n calipers on the dual rear calipers but it is still binding n locking up still. Could it b my master cylinder? all 4 brake lines breed fluid fine, change all 4 flex hose too. When I got the truck, the brake fluid was all green n contaminated too, new fluid in there but could it b the seals in the master cylinder gone bad to not hold pressure? Brake pedal is firm when the truck is off but when u turn the truck on the brake pedal sinks down to the floor. So my guest next is to get a new master cylinder c if that is the problem. Truck is daily driving only, would u say stick to the Vacuum Booster system n not upgrade to the Hydro Booster system cux I don't really want to spend extra money the new system.
This gentleman has got to be a professional mechanic because he's making this look too damn easy he's definitely not a basic backyard mechanic that's for damn sure!
How noticeable was the upgrade to the brakes? Trying to avoid spending the money on wilwood or brembo’s. In hindsight would you do the 2019/2020 brake conversion?
Is ur ride a lot smoother with spindles than with lowering springs? I have springs and my ride is real stiff how’s ur ride with the spindles
Awesome, I appreciate you for doing this. If you don’t mind me asking. How much did all of that run you?
I think it was about $1,000 for everything I did on the front and rear suspension
Good morning my friend question I have a 2006 gmc sierra 1500 5.3 crew cab . The chassis is bend in the place we’re is the engine. They charge a lot to get fix my only option is replace the chassis ,and the question is what models has the same chasis please let me know thanks and I will be waiting for your response
Ya someone lowering a truck with intelligent ambitions...from a weary FL driver...seeing lifted, loud, oversized tires with the windows open thumping
cramp next to me at stop lights
I’ve got an ‘02 model that I’ve been looking at doing similar stuff to! Love this video series! Question on the brakes: did you have to get an ‘05 caliper, too, or are they all the same? Thank you, and keep them coming! Can’t wait to see how you do the big block swap! 😁🤙🏼
yeah, the caliper is different as well, gotta switch everything: calipers, rotors, pads, and caliper brackets
Lawrence LT Tolman thank you, sir! Keep up the great work on your RUclips and PowerNation! 🤙🏼
What year and model truck do those come off of ? TIA
How much did you end up spending redoing the front end??
I have a 2001 my question is about the brakes so the calipers bracket and rotors off of 05 will bolt up to my spindles?
Yep. Just gotta have everything you listed: calipers, brackets, rotors, and I think the flex lines might be a tad different.
Which bilstien shocks for 2/4 drop
Hey man, great video. Quick question for you sir. I have a 2001 silverado 4x4 with the 4L60 aswell and i notice you said you swapped yours for a 4l80. Was this swapped a plug and play or u need some work to make it fit.?
I made another video on the wiring you should check out, but there was a harness needed to convert the plugs and add a second vehicle speed sensor to the computer
Your making me feel bad I have 2 trucks that could use front end rebuilds. Maybe some day.
Your son knows a bit about turning a wrench 🔧
cool.. to know..
Where you buy the brakes
Did you have to order new upper and lower A arms for the 2/4 drop? Or did you want to get it brand new? Thanks in advance.
no, you don't have to replace the control arms, I just did because my old ones were worn out. You can easily do this with original control arms
LT, I have a 99 GMC Sierra 4x4, what year of the donor trucks parts are needs for the upgrade for my truck?
you need rotors, calipers, caliper brackets, and pads from a 2005+ truck. I think I changed the brake flex hoses as well.
Lt from power block hwll ya!
Did your lower and upper control arm come with grease or did you add that after install ? Also what is your recommendations on that
I haven't greased em yet, but normally I use that sticky white grease that comes with most urethane bushings
Awesome video! Are the bigger rotors, caliper bracket and caliper all for a 2005 Silverado? Thinking about doing this to my suburban.
I believe its 2005 and newer, if you have a suburban with rear disc brakes though, you already have better rear discs and calipers than the 1500 trucks got, so I'd just check the fronts...
@@LawrenceTolman thanks man!!
1:48 326,000 miles and I can see it still has the plastic inserts from the factory for the upper control arm cam adjusters. unreal
@Lawrence that common big brake kit, does it matter if you have 4x4 front diff?
this works for 2wd and 4wd trucks as they share the same spindle. in fact, now guys are doing 2020 big brake conversions because they have 4 piston calipers I think
@@LawrenceTolman I noticed. Only thing holding me back is wheel set up. My truck is lifted 6” with 35’s on 17’s rims, don’t think I’ll clear, wana do 18’s with nothing less than -12 and still have lots of sidewall. Don’t want 20’s unless I want to.
You're very knowledgeable when it comes to these Chevy Trucks! Your videos are well constructed and executed, you are very informative, and to the point, all while being a family man! Kudos! Keep up the good work! Cheers!
Quick question. Am I able to upgrade my 2003 1500 5.3 King Cab Long Bed Light Duty 2wd rear calipers, rotors, and pads with another year? Just like you mentioned for the front with a 2005.
Also, how can I find out what transmission I have, and would it be fairly easy to make the truck 4WD or AWD?
yes, the rear upgrade should be the same as listed here. The most popular upgrade is to use a same year Suburban rear caliper and rotor, its a two piston and uses a thicker rotor, but will still fit inside 16" wheels. And this was a 4l80 transmission I swapped in, and if you wanted to make this truck 4wd or awd, it would be best to grab a 4wd frame from the junkyard and swap everything over.
Thanks for the quick reply! You rock!
Cool, so my understanding is I don't have to go up to a 2005 for the rear. Just get the 2003 Suburban rear dual piston calipers/brackets, rotors, and pads.
As far as AWD/4WD sounds like that's a lot more work than it's probably worth.. lol.
If I wanted to make it heavy duty, would I just upgrade to 8 lug?
Yes, you could swap an 8 lug rear but then you’d have mismatched front/rear. Probably not necessary unless your hauling very heavy
