Installing a 2/4 drop on a 99-07 Silverado

- It's time to tackle the rear suspension install on the UglyTruck, my 2000 Silverado 1500 extended cab. I lowered the front end last time with 2" Belltech drop spindles, and this time the back end comes down a total of 4 inches by installing some bolt-on drop hangers and shackles. All you gotta do is take off the bed to gain access (it makes things a lot easier) and move the fuel tank to the side for the driver's side install, which again, makes your life a lot easier. This process applies specifically to 1999-2007 Silverado and Sierra extended cab trucks, but overall a shackle and hanger install will look pretty much the same way on any kind of truck.

When I started out, the stock 4L60 was blown, so the first thing I did was to swap to a 4l80e. After that, I cleaned up the exterior looks a little, swapped some later model wheels and tires, and then rebuilt the whole front suspension last and steering.
Stay tuned for the final reveal of the stance of UglyTruck! It's getting soooo close to driving down the road again.
I added the shackles on my 2002 then I had a vibration.
Really enjoy your videos. I have to admit I wasn’t the biggest fan when you started on Truck Tech, but I now really enjoy all of your content. Your enthusiasm for the projects you are working on make me really look forward to new shows and videos on this channel.
Hey I appreciate that! It certainly takes time to get used to being on camera, but it’s a fun job and we get to build some cool stuff
I’ve been pretty lazy to continue working on my truck and you made that rear drop instal look so easy! I’m gonna try to knock it out this weekend for sure 😤
Did you get it done or were you just running your pie hole?
@@wildestcowboy2668😂
Looks great man! You got me inspired to work on some trucks of my own. Saved 3 79-87 square bodies from hitting the scrapyard. Just fixed the distributor, rebuilt the carb, and now working on the brake system. :) Thanks again man for being an awesome friend and helping me learn the ropes w/ cars.
Sure thing! I’m all about keeping classics on the road
You should do the 2019-2020 4 piston brake upgrade!
I definitely would like to see that I’m interested in doing it
@@willowens8346 There are a few videos on it on RUclips. Performancetrucks.net on Facebook has a few write-ups on how to do it
Would love that.
I installed the same kit on the back of my Silverado. For some reason, I only have about an inch of clearance between the frame and axle. I'm going to have to notch the frame. Hopefully nothing breaks before I get around to it.
mine is about 2-3 inches, and only ever hits if I hit a massive bump or have a bunch of stuff in the bed.
I have the same lowering kit ,I had to use a 6 degree pinon wedge to fix drive line vibration. I still have slight vibration on from start
Removing the bed makes everything so much easier....
I have done this drop on several trucks, just go ahead and do the c notch kit because it will bottom out with any kind of bump in the road
I don't know LT... Pretty soon a name change may be in order cause that thing is definitely getting a lot less "ugly" each episode! Good Job!
Man, what a great video, love the edit style as well. Fun, catchy, to the point, and great audio. Excited to install this on my truck.
Like the content LT ! Dude you almost @ 1000 !!!
thanks! its slow but steady progress
Thanks for the great video LT, always great information and content 👍🇺🇸
thanks for watching! I appreciate it a ton
@LawrenceTolman great vids! Really liked watching Trucks when you were on it. What bump atop did tou use? Having a hard time findinf those.
Your mannerism and video is exactly like powerblock TV trucks hahaha!
great vid , simple instead of a leaf swap
Hey man, is it possible for you to include the links to the parts you purchased on the video description or whenever you reply to the comment? Thank you in advanced!
Awesome job LT, keep it up.
thanks so much!
Very nice build btw ! Man keep up the great work
Thanks, will do!
Very good work I like your professionalism and your enthusiasm keep the videos coming Chevy love 💪
I appreciate that!
Like your channel just wondering if you got the Chevy lean with that 2/4 drop
Did you have any issues with the drive shaft being too long now after installing the drop hangers?
Do all of those brackets come as a kit or do you have to buy them individually?
the shackles and hangers came as a kit, and I had to buy the shock extenders separately.
Is all of this really necessary for me to drop my 2003 Sierra 2" on the rear? Serious question.
I have a 99 long bed single cab what do you think I should go with for that perfect stance maybe with an inch or 2 clearance for the tire and fender
How many miles before the trans went out mine is at 200k same engine and transmission with no issues at all kept oil changes i been having my truck for 11 years bought it with 65k back in 2010
not sure if it was the original or not, but the truck had 324k on it at the time
Talks like the guys on the show Horsepower.
probably true...
Your hair look like a mad scientist
Will the rear shackle kit fit my 2002 single cab? Thanks in advance.
Hi LT, great video. I plan to do this on my 01 Sierra C3. Did you find it necessary to adjust pinion angle? I enjoy and have used multiple tips from your videos. Thank you.
Hey LT, did you use the shims and the horse shoe looking parts for the driveline vibration thing? or u just use the hangers and shackles only for the 2/4 drop? all other parts from the belltech kit did you use them all or just the drop hangers and shackles?
I ended up with a 4* pinion shim (i think) between the springs and the axle pads, and I modified the driveshaft center carrier bearing mount to get the shaft more in a straight line... but it was pretty close without moving it
@@LawrenceTolman
Hey bud great video, did mine this weekend. Question, was the 4* to get the pinion angle up or down? Was the thick end at the back or front? Thanks in advance!
You sound like you used to voice truck u on spike lol great vid man!
I've heard that once or twice
I was thinking the same thing
Did you ever use the part for the driveshaft or no ?
Why do people remove the gas tank when you don't have to?
Hey man quick question, does this work on a 4x4 1999 silverado extended cab?
@ Lawrence LT Tolman : How did you manage to install the driver side hanger without dropping the tank? I have this same kit and it calls for lowering the tank...id rather not do that.
I actually did have to loosen the tank after all, just don't think I showed it. I was able to get my hands on like two or three of the bolts, but its just so tight of a fit it was easier in the long run to just loosen the tank and move it aside.
@@LawrenceTolman I assume you had to disconnect the fuel lines as well?
Are shock extenders and bilsteins better ride quality than just drop shocks?
in my opinion it does, the Bilsteins are a pretty good shock
@@LawrenceTolman are the bilstein 4600 the right size for the rear? With 4 inch drop and extenders
Where did you get the lowering hangers from ? All the ones I find say they don't fit standard cab or crew cab
Do you install the bracket for the carrier bering ?
Hey Lawrence with the 2 inch hangers did you have to cut the exhaust? And how's the sound inside the truck?
Did you lower the front with the torsion bars. I want to do a 2/4 drop on my truck. And I guessing that’s the best way to get the 2 inches out of the front.
this is a coil spring front end, but if you have a 4wd truck of the same era, then yes, you can lower it by adjusting the torsion bars, i've done that on several 4wd trucks
After driving it for a while... did you have any clearance issues with the reduced space between the frame and axle? Did you ever check the space with a load in the bed? Thanks for your time. I'm looking into lowering my 2000 Tahoe.
It does bottom out every now and again on a larger bump like on an overpass, and when I filled the bed with a load of dirt it was just sitting on the bump stops. But normally with everyday driving, it’s fine
@@LawrenceTolman Thank you so much for the reply! I'm digging this project!
Hey man. I can’t find the video of you lowering the front of the truck because there’s so many videos on your channel. Can I get a link? I’m planning on doing this to my truck. Thanks
Did you have to move the gas tank to get the driver side hanger in I m about to do the same drop on my truck. Also fo you need those shock extensions?
Yeah, I did unbolt the gas tank to slide it over. You can sort of get to the bolts without doing it, but it’s a huge pain. Much easier to just move the tank aside. You should either do the shock extensions or a shorter shock.
A quick question, did you also do a “big brake” change in the rear also to go along with the front 05 & up upgrade. Thanks & really enjoy the series!
On kit u link there some other hardware and plate where does that go ?
Did you ever have to do the C-notch with the 4 inch rear drop? I want to do the 2/4 drop on my 1987 GMC Sierra.
on this truck, no I didnt ever do a notch.
hey man did you have to move the gas tank to get the driver hanger on? did you cut the stock bolt that holds the leaf on the driver side to take it out?
I just unbolted the tank and pushed it back a bit, it also helped when bolting the hanger on as well.
Hello great job, could not find the video on the front lowering suspension, did you make one ?
I did, I think it was with my "Disc brake upgrade" video from the same timeframe
Thanks , I did find it, great job, I have a 2002 chevy 1500 , same thing almost
I added the lowering shackles on my 2002 then I had a vibration.
Shocks that you recommend for this 2/4 drop? I have the front dropped 2 inches with spindles and I have some bump steer
theres a million good brands out there, but fora 2/4 drop with shock extenders and spindles, some stock length bilsteins are pretty good IMO... or something by Belltech
Do you want to sell the stock hangers?
I love this series, glad you're building trucks like this in your spare time. Hey, what's the song @ 4:55? It sounds really familiar but I can't place it
Just something I grabbed off the free RUclips sound library. Not sure what the name is
How did you turn truck into awd do still have vid
I did the same drop but it didn’t drop like this one what can I do to go a lil lower with drop shackles and hangers
Will it work on single cab short bed 4x4
What size tires are on the truck
It looks clean
What kit did you use for the driveshaft alignment? I literally have the same truck in white i just bought the belltech kit
Why does it say that this kit doesn’t fit my 2001 Silverado 1500 2wd ext. cab?
Do you know if it will fit on a 2003 silverado single cab step side bed?
How’s the driveline angle on it my truck has a 4inch dropp in the rear and it keeps breaking u joints
Hey LT......Another great video! I love watching the fabrication, designing and welding in your builds! Now? I have to ask? What brand MIG welder do you have/use there? Amperage of the machine? and? what wire size do you use for "most" of your fab work?
I use a Forney MIG welder that uses a 220v wall input (not positive of the output though, likely close to 200 amps) and for most general purpose welding I use 0.030" wire.
@@LawrenceTolman I should have asked this with my first post but? do you use shielding gas (Argon-C02) or flux coated wire? I have never used just the flux coated wire myself. All my welding has been structural, either 7018 low hydrogen stick or dual shield MIG .045 up to 1" plate. Just had to ask because again....I always love to see welding and fabrication and what others do. I do have a miller "diversion" 180 amp TIG machine......Sure would like to get a MIG for the shop too!
For automotive stuff you want mig gas C25 is what i use. Gasless wirefed stuff is usually your cheaper harbour freight type of stuff. That being said i know an old guy that welds exhaust with tiny 7018s still haha 6013 also work well for exhaust
Nice looks 👍
Do you have a link for the swap from the 4L60E to the 4L80E ?
I heard something about there being a wiring/programming issue. Is that true?
Yeah, there are changes you need to make for both tuning and wiring. I made another video series detailing what needs to be done.
Do you have to pull of the bed?
you don't have to, but it helps
@Lawrence LT Tolman Have you had any issues with bottoming out? I got my drop in and my driver side keeps bottoming out. I know they ride low on the drives side due the fuel tank weight but my truck used to be a farm work truck and im wondering if my springs are just riding low from wear and tear. with my bed on it seems like i may have and 1.5-2 inches of clearance WITHOUT the bump stop.
I've got about 2" of free space between the axle pad and the bump stop out back. It does bottom out every now and again but its never been a problem with ride quality really, its pretty soft when it hits.
Do you really need the shock extender
not if you are using a shorter drop shock
What's the part number for the shock extensions
What shocks do u have?
So you don’t gotta remove the gas tank do put the hangers on
My hangers are welded on how can I get them off
lots of patience with a cutoff wheel or a grinder I guess
Hey what’s that on the creeper? Looks like a video bomber 😂😂. Kids are great though, I have a few of my own.
good stuff bro
Appreciate it
Did you lowered the gas tank for the hanger ??
I did, just loosened the straps, and was able to slide the tank back a few inches to reach inside the frame to get to the bolts
@@LawrenceTolman thx for answer ,I’m doing the same for my 02 Silverado but I’m running 22s
Would doing a 4wd 3/5 drop be the same?
pretty much, the rear is identical, and you can lower the front of a 4x4 with drop spindles just like this, or a drop torsion bar key as well, or even combine the two
What did you install on the front to get the 2 inch drop.
Belltech 2" drop spindle
Thanks when you put the shackles and the hangers on the rear did you have to shim the pinion. Thanks
Will this kit fit on a short bed ?
yup
Lo mejor para q No de cantazos feos con el diferencial y la caja ❤
Do i need a c notch for 4 in drop with 99-02 chevy
No, I’ve done 4” drops before with no notch. The axle will be sorta close to the frame, but rarely bottoms out
Thanks LT ur the man
We’re you in that movie “There’s something about Mary “?
not that I'm aware of
where did you purchase the drop hangers?
Amazon
What brand hangers did u get cause I did install some hangers on my truck and moved the the differential about and inch back and dont look center to the bed
Amazon
Not a single before/after pic? FAIL.
It’s 99 to 06
It must be so nice to not have to work on a vehicle with north-eastern rust covering everything.
I was born and raised in the northeast, and believe me, I don't miss the rust. thats part of the reason I I moved west instead of back home
Well good for ya! I am hoping to go visit, maybe live in Montana at some point, don’t know how the rust is up there
@@liamjerkins7259 honestly much better than what you currently have to deal with. For some reason the rust content is pretty much nonexistent even for a northern environment such as Wyoming or Montana.
C Notch is bad for proformace because you’re cutting the frame
Its bad for frame support 99.9% of all C notched frames crack or bend after like 10k miles
that’s why you weld it instead of bolting it on
@@baileyfry do you have any evidence to support that claim?
