Not knowing the family history I unfortunately gave my mother a copy of Frances' autobiography. Mom's dad was a patient at Western Washington hospital at the same time as F.F. My grandfather died of pneumonia at that time. The accounts of ice bath shock therapy and subsequent illnesses caused from it ,gave my mom a horrific script of her dad's last days. His autopsy found that he had a brain tumor causing erratic behavior. No shock therapy would have helped him.
Saw the movie where Jessica Lange played her part. She was born way ahead of her time and was very intelligent. It was a very very sad story, and what her family did to her
My uncle Tim used to provide Frances car rides in Indianapolis after she moved there. She was always kind to him and said he was a good boy. I have no clue if she ever had a lobotomy or not.

Francis Farmer was arrested January 13th 1943 not January 14th (when the arrest appeared in newspapers). And she died at 56 years old (not 57 as you mentioned). Other than these facts yours is a very good video.

I am not surprised by the recent retirement of Christina Applegate due to multiple sclerosis. It is unfortunate that diseases like multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy get worse over the years for their sufferers while people with cerebral palsy basically stay the same after being born premature. I have ataxic cerebral palsy and went to school with people who had ms or md.
She was amazing, it is shocking what happened to her for money. Her appearance on the " This is your life show" was so horrific. She handled it with grace and tact and still maintained her stance. I have watched both: Frances and ‘Will There Really Be A Morning.’ Of the two, I found, ‘Will There Really Be A Morning,’ much, much, more accurate than Frances. In Frances, the character created and played by Sam Shepard did not exist at all. It was total fabrication. In, ‘Will There Really Be A Morning,’ they show more of the back and forth to the asylum, facilitated by Lillian and played wonderfully by Lee Grant who played her as the eccentric woman that Frances wrote about. Lillian Farmer was addicted to getting press and getting her name in the papers long before Frances became a star. Susan Blakely did a fantastic job and won an Emmy. I feel that this film shows more of Frances’ loneliness and also her contentious relationship with first husband, Lief Erickson who is not even mentioned in the movie, Frances. Although Jessica Lang looked more like Frances, I felt Susan’s character captured more of the real story. And NO she did not receive a lobotomy and was not pimped out to servicemen. Also, her comeback was just a mediocre one, at best. Jean Radcliffe admitted to fabricating many parts of the book. If you read it, which I have, several times, you are able to pick up on the two distinct writing styles. Another rumor that I believe to be truth is that she and Radcliffe were in fact a couple and Frances struggled with her sexuality. Anyway, a great and beautiful actress who was shunned by Hollywood, but again, it is a business, not a babysitter or daycare and Francis was arrogant, temperamental and impossible to work with. That’s also why on: This Is Your Life, not one single costar, producer, director or writer appeared on the show. When Carey Grant was asked if he would ever consider working with her again he said simply: ‘Never.’ Yes, it’s tragic, but she also contributed to her downfall, as did Lillian. Years ago a family member only needed a physician's signature to have someone committed to a mental institution. The patient could be locked up involuntarily and indefinitely. These patients would likely be heavily sedated with powerful meds such as Haldol or Thorazine. One of my husband's relatives used this method to snatch away a fortune from a stepmother.
How tragic, the poor woman! I was involuntarily hospitalized during the early 2000's. Even with modern ... Betterments it was truly horrid. Mentally, physically it was not fun but not horrible. The place was clean, so I figure that goes a long ways as well. I was there for what felt like 9 months but ended up only being about 3-4. I can only imagine during that time period. Truly horrendous.

It was tough watching the scenes in the mental institution in the movie Frances, where they showed female patients being raped by GI's, heads shaved, abused , given shock-treatment and some were lobotomized. In the movie it shows Frances about to have the lobotomy before fading to black. So sad that people with mental illnesses or just anxiety were treated like lab rats. Jessica Lange portrayed her incredibly well.
The video is incomplete because it didn't mention that she ended her career hosting a movie matinee show for an Indianapolis TV station. I know because I watched that show when I was a boy and saw her; she always wore a full-length evening gown. Also, an Indianapolis attorney (now deceased) that I knew when I was a law student had been her local personal attorney and told me that she still had quite a temper.
Because of her famous trip to Russia, she was supposed to be a rabid Communist sympathizer, although she had said or done nothing to support such a theory. The large community of Jewish Communists in Hollywood, who completely controlled the making and distribution of movies, entertained her and raved about her beauty. Frances suffered such terrible betrayal from the Group Theatre and especially from Clifford Odets, which drove her to heavy drinking. Today, she would have had access to detox/rehab, to good therapy, and probably have been fine. And never underestimate the trouble an evil mother can cause, too. That woman was really sick. I agree with the person here who characterized it as Hollywood's saddest story. And I think Jessica Lange bore a remarkable resemblance to her.
