@@Hello-fz3cj Yes Shakespeare said it centuries ago. But there are cracks in these barriers - especially amongst young people. They may be the 'selfie generation' but they have a refreshing intolerance of intolerance and I meet them from all over the world. For example a young Russian girl I know is in a theatre group which is going to present this show.
I remember when I found out that they were remaking the film and that Ansel was playing Tony... My only reaction was: He is literally the PERFECT choice. Because I'd heard his singing voice before and he sounds smooth as butter and just looks perfect in this role. I'd only seen Rachel Zegler through RUclips and was pretty happy to see she got the role of Maria. She is absolutely stunning and her voice is gorgeous. The casting for this film... I don't think it could have been any better tbh
This film will go down in history as one of the greatest films ever made. Box office means nothing. The greatest films were not big at the box office, i.e Citizen Kane, Its A Wonderful Life, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, just to name a few. Time will show that this film will rise to the very top of the film world. When you see it, it will change you forever.
@Henry K. People cried in the theater and later in their own homes when on commercial tv during the 1961 original-Robert Wise directed-Natalie Wood as Maria in brown face-Rita Moreno's Oscar winning performance-film. Spielberg's remake in order to replace the 1961 movie has nothing more going for it over the original. Natalie Wood's natural complexion was darker than Rachel Zegler's, and one again the only person besides DeBose, as a major character, who is actually ethnically Puerto Rican is Rita Moreno. Yes, others had Hispanic heritiage to one degree or another but distinctly not Puerto Rican. The 2021 update of WSS is weak in trying to make this obsessed on point of showing representation
My score when I only watched this clip before I had yet to watch the film was 8/10. And my score when I watched the clip again after watching the film was 100/10.
It seems they left out intro to the song where’s Maria says “only you your the only thing I’ll see forever” and Tony follows with “and for me there is only Maria every site that I see is Maria”. It builds up to the beginning of the song.
@@petticoatsfroufrou4644 oh, that’s good to know. Could not understand why the would leave it out. As a matter of fact they should of used it in the clip.

New movie I give 2 stars I didn’t shed a tear when Tony died went home watched original cried my eyes out . Steven Spielberg said he was disappointed in this remake and he also said he didn’t like original. Original received 10 Oscars. This film is lucky to even get nominated. Actors were all great Rita Moreno was the best
Great film, still not as good as original though in my opinion. The choreography was better in the original film that's for sure and a few of the scenes just didn't match up to the original - like the dance floor one, cool it boy one, officer krupke one and America one. Not a bad effort though
@@TothanCrawk I've never seen WST on stage. I only know the original cast recording and the soundtrack and viewing of the '61 film. Both of them had impact, regardless of whether the film's actors were dubbed. The onscreen performances were strong. From what I've seen of the clips for this remake, it may be more realistic, but dramatically overall, far less interesting.
Overdoing the Spanish accent in an English-language song doesn't work in this new WSS. The full consonants are needed to hold the structure of the song together.
I'm sorry. This just doesn't have the soul of the first movie. It looks like somebody's concept of what the first movie should've been but it lacks soul and is definitely not an improvement.
Best reason for not watching it. In German you'd say the voices sound "beliebig". They are nice, but that's it. No character, no real emotion, no expression. Won't waste money for this.

Saw this. An old saying goes: "Never try to copy an original". Here's the proof. So much elaborate work by all departments, for so little effect! Who casted "Maria"? Spielberg himself??? Either he goes blind, or likes ugly women. Well . . .
I hate to say this, but I think the '61 version was better. Ansel Elgort is extremely handsome and "hot". But why, why, why did they have him use that stupid voice of an uneducated dolt? His real voice is not like that. It made me wonder why Maria would want to run off with a cretin who would be too stupid to complete a job application. A new scene not in the original had Tony and Maria going to a museum the day after they met. They sat in the bus like two strangers; there was no chemistry between the two. On the good side, the movie wasn't as woke as I had expected. However, I read that Rachel Zegler (Maria) is an "anti-police activist." That said, I hope her career dies on the vine like this film has at the box office.
I saw it last night and it made me want to puke. The 1961 film was so dynamic, it put all the pieces together in a way that could just never be duplicated. Even if it had always been Spielberg's dream to direct a movie musical, why go for one that wanted no improving? I actually laughed at the subway scene. They're madly in love yet his arm isn't even around her? Also, trucking all the way up to The Cloisters broke the illusion of those "20 bad blocks" comprising the entirety of a very claustrophobic world for all the main characters. If it was that easy for them to hop on a train platform with no one from the neighborhood recognizing them or stopping them or asking where they were all that time, then why didn't they just take off then and there? That was just one of so many very baffling dramatic choices made for the worse.

I wished this was doing better at the box office. It will make up for it in the nominations process. With that said, the lead actor (Tony) was uncharismatic, not visually stunning, and fell flat.
