Thanks for all the positive comments on my West Side Story 1961/2021 supercuts, and I just saw that my "America" supercut has reached ONE MILLION VIEWS. Wow! 😃I'm very happy you're all enjoying them as much as I did editing them. Check out the new one I made of the "Dance at the Gym" number: ruclips.net/video/7IGFYOS3Tds/видео.html
I love and appreciate both versions for different reasons. What stands out to me about the 2021 version is how much more like teenagers Tony and Maria feel like then in the 1961 version. Everything from Tony enthusiastically climbing the fire escape to asking Maria to ‘run away with him’ before this song and Maria scared at them being caught it just screams TEENAGERS to me. While their feelings are very real you get the sense that because neither knows what they are doing, Tonight comes off as two kids playing at romance like they saw in the movies, like “ this is what a guys does when he loves a girl he asks her to run away with him!” It’s very cute and has a enduring innocence about the whole scene. Whereas the 1961 version feels very old Hollywood and I love that about that version, in someways it comes across as more classically romantic then the 2021 version which is much more ‘cute’ to me. Tony and Maria seem older then they are supposed to be in the 1961 version ( I think all the old stars did back in the day lol) so in a sense their romance seems more serious in this scene then in the 2021 version which doesn’t really get serious until One Hand One Heart. All in All I think both versions fit their individual movies, and which is better is really just a matter of personal preference.
Well being a teenager in 1961 was way different now. Not everyone went to high school and even less went to college. People were ready to get into the working field and get married after high school.
Well, Romeo and Juliet has been described as "A tale of youth as youth sees it.", so the attitudes of how young people act change depending on the time period.
The only thing that makes me sad is realizing that one day you will run out of songs and...oh, nevermind, I'll just rewatch the ones you've done again!
It’s one of the few scenes from WSS I can convincingly say the 2021 version did way way better in all aspects (singing, acting, lighting, camera movement, pacing everything). The rest of the film is open to debate but not this part. This was pure goosebumps-level magic, especially on the big screen.
YOU CANNOT be serious! The 2021 singing is pitchy and the man is flat sometimes if you listen closely! Sierra Boggess and Julian did a brilliantly sung rendition compared to the 2021 film!
@@gpapa31 my ears are fine.Their singing is average and listen to Sierra and Julian singing Tonight and see what I mean about their rendition rival 1961 movie
@@markwhitman9029 I grew up with the 1961 film. Is one of my all time favourite musicals, so I do have an incline of the performance. I also have the soundtrack on LP and CD. So I am in a position to make a fair judgment. There’s also a pro vocalist here on RUclips that critics the singing on both versions, worth having a watch. IMHO they are both great but on this particular scene I prefer this version hands down, plus both Ansel and Rachel are the ones singing and have a better chemistry. And on top you have the Kaminski-Spielberg duo doing wonders with camera movement/framing, crane shots and lighting. Can’t beat that. The rest of the film you can make any arguments you like as there are scenes that the 1961 IMHO did better and others that it didn’t. But here is not even an argument. As it’s not for the ending of the 1961 version. Spielberg messed it up IMHO snd Wise did a tremendous job (although still not moved but definitely caught Maria’s drama).
@@gpapa31 good text. I still like 1961 better but drawback voices dubbed. Come on though, cannot beat the great Marni Nixon doing Natalie's singing and that alone makes it better than 2021
Wow. These super cuts are breathtaking! I haven’t seen the Spielberg version yet but I’m all too familiar with the Jerome Robbins, Robert Wise version. I know we’re great. Love you have for this film and I really appreciate this opportunity. I’m very romantical.
Thank you so much! I really enjoyed making these and can't wait to share the one I'm making now of the Dance at the Gym, which should be out later this month.
Well, it's nice to see that *someone*, somewhere on RUclips, didn't *cut off the end of the Act One Closer*, thank you very much. I would have stuck with the 61 music, there, as I think the dissonance counterpoint is dramatically important, but perhaps in this context, not so much.
Las dos versiones son una belleza. Es un símil de Romeo y Julieta tan bien hecho que a veces supera la versión de Shakespeare. Uno no puede dejar de conmoverse con el amor tan bonito de Tony y María, por eso toca tanto al corazón.
@@markwhitman9029Richard Beymer is not dead, he is still very much alive and in his 80' also Rita Moreno, Russ Tamblyn, George Chakiris and the young lady ( can't recall her name 🤔) who play Anybody, can't say about the rest of the cast, of course we know about Natalie Wood, but yeah you can get more information from the Google site , yeah those 2 voices, Richard and Natalie 's were dubbed, oh I do believe that the guys who played Ice and Chino have passed away, so yeah check it out and good luck
I saw the 1961 version when it was new and have loved it for 60 years. But i prefer the 2021 version for its realism. The characters look like real people, they are ethnically cast, and the sets were more real. Most of the 61 version were filmed on a soundstage and looked it. The 61 version I felt i was watching actors in a movie. The 2021 version I felt i was watching real people and I found it much more emotionally involving.
@MaxHechtman Do you plan to do any others? They are so well done I'd love to see The Rumble and A Boy Like That. I prefer the original version but the blending of the two versions and the way you have done it makes me understand and appreciate the 2021 film more. Thank you
I might consider doing "A Boy Like That/I Have a Love." It depends on which songs blend the best together based on how they were depicted in the two films.
How do you think you'd do 'Somewhere' or 'One Hand One Heart' if you did them? I love your supercuts of these movies (both movies bring me joy as well as tears)
Secondo me e più bella la nuova versione a mio parere perché è più romantica e da un forte significato e i personaggi interpretano bene la loro voce in modo in cui intonano
I know that the 2021 version cast actors of the correct ethnicity and the leads actually sang, but for me Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer just illuminated the screen. They were such a beautiful couple and had such chemistry. I think the acting was so much better in the 1961 version. Subjective I know and I respect everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
@@tessdurberville711 Tony is not supposed to be Italian. In the synopsis of the stage play the Jets are simply stated as white American. In an early drafts of the original show, Laurents did mention that the character of Tony is white American but of Polish/Irish decent but this doesn’t really feature in the script. Ansel Elgort is white American with some British/Russian ancestry, so that is about the nearest they could get I suspect!
Actually in the original film Bernardo describes Tony as Pollark...which I always assumed that Tony was of Polish descendent. The key here is really to point out the absurdity of the animosity against the Puerto Rican people because they are immigrants ........as the majority of the jets are probably first or second generation European immigrants.
CANNOT TOP the 1961 Masterpiece! The recent singers just average; in fact the stage version of Sierra Boggess and Julian singing this comes extremely close to topping the 1961 film.
I must be in the minority when I say that I much prefer the old one, it just feels right in a way I can't explain, and I'm not as much a fan of the later one which seems kinda weird to me the way things are staged and I don't like their voices in the new one, especially Zegler.

Natalie Wood was so breathtakingly beautiful.
Absolutely, without a doubt.
I saw the original and I gotta say Rachel Zegler is as beautiful.
@@tqnoheMore IMO. The 2021 just seems so much more natural.
60 years apart and they all look great!!
Plot Twist: These were happening at the same time just on 2 different balconies.
That's what I thought of as I edited this and the Quintet.
You laugh, but in a city as big as New York . . .
Additional plot twist: both families are about to get a series of noise complaints from the rest of the tenants in those apartment buildings.
It Is happening since the world exist.❤

Wonder what Richard Beymer thought of the new "West Side Story". Wonderful combo.
Isn't Richard dead? Besides I am sure his voice was dubbed as was Natalie's
