Mike Faist is a fabulous dancer. He should have won an award for this movie
I like how this is based off of the original 1957 Broadway version of Cool, which takes place before the Rumble, but adds a twist: this time, to tie in with this movie's backstory for Tony and Riff's friendship, with Tony being a former gang member who has reformed, while his friend Riff wants Tony to be with the Jets again and can't seem to understand why Tony would reform.
While this version and the stage version take place before the rumble, they are totally different. The stage version is done at Docs as Riff is telling the Jets to be cool as they are jumpy waiting for the Sharks to show up for the war council. Also, in both the stage and 1961 movie there are women in the number and Tony is not.
The way Ansel Elgort played Tony also made him seem like he was in fact a Jet once. He’s got the edge and the MOVES!!
Tony and Riff started the jets, so they are both gang leaders, but one of them chose a different path but the jets will still listen to both of them together or apart from each other
All the double meanings (homoerotic tension and message on the damage of gun violence and the access to it) make probably one of the most incredible and timeless scenes in the movie. I also love how this scene is not gloryfying the Jets as a whole unlike in the original, when we know what they’re going to do to Anita at the end. It’s only focused on Riff and Tony. Also at 3:54 Riff’s turn with the position of his arms is EXACTLY like Anita’s in America when she shows her skills after Bernardo’s solo with his guys. And she snaps her finger then. Anita and Riff share a lot of other parallels, may it be because of the snares positioned on their faces at the exact same place in two important scenes or the roses (Riff has a rose tattoo (very noticeable during the prologue where he wears a white shirt) while Anita has red roses on her black dress at the gym) ying/yang and war of the roses references in the design make another fascinating storytelling detail. And the use of the roses makes sense since Shakespeare wrote about this war too
I don't see the Homoeroticism, just a very strong Friendship like Brothers since Childhood, between Tony and Riff, which is unfortunately and heartbreakingly crumbling before the Viewer's very eyes, because Tony HAS grown up, realized the error of his past ways and wants to move on from the Jets and his past life and make a much BETTER one for himself.....and Riff refuses to grow up, or let Tony do that!!
All which DEVASTATINGLY turns into one Tragedy, after the other, until the very end of the Movie, which has a DEVASTATING Climax!!
Everything else you said though, I agree with and you mentioned some interesting points and observations that I didn't necessarily notice, especially the parallels between Riff and Anita!
Good catch!
No lol actually the point of the song // choreography and them saying “I’m open” - is a very clear metaphor / very clear imagery of them swapping “footballs for knives.” They’re swapping childhood games for violent activities that only grown men take part in
It’s actually super obvious
Really? Explain, because not only do I not find it "super obvious", I don't even see it on a subconscious level. I think you're over-reading the scene.

AGREED!!
It was such a joy to watch this movie as a musical fan AND as a Spielberg fan. It felt like a celebration of classic Spielberg, like Indiana Jones, with all the creative choreography and scene blocking.
yeah same, as a big fan of Spielberg and his most iconic films (saving private Ryan, the terminal, Schindler's list, etc) this felt like an instant classic and it was so great that he did this in 2021
I'm also a classic Spielberg fan. I loved his old movies. Some of his recent "Based on a True Story" movies didn't really strike a cord for me. The only one was Schindler's List. But this and Ready Player One brought back the classic Spielberg I love.
This song is so good!! Not only the music, but the tension created with the loaded gun, precarious setting, eye contact etc is amazing. The expressions on Riff and Tony's faces, particularly at the end, are just WOW. You can really see their conflict despite them being so close :') I love the combination of emotion, seriousness and playful music- this is one of my favourites and I could rant a whole lot more about it hahadkdjds
This is the best homage to the Robbins choreography we could ever have, this scene could tell the whole story. The way it starts as playful and boyish and then it quickly becomes more violent and action-peaked is brilliant. This is mind-blowing. I can’t wait to see this clip uploaded by Disney
2:40 also that scene? It looks like an anime, look at the way they’re positioned perfectly and the expressions are top notch
@@belle-ashton2167 Yesss that scene is particularly amazing! The rise in music (I'm not sure of the proper word) with the gun is breath-taking. And their eye contact alone says just as much as a whole song could haha. I'm so thankful for the internet and for Sub Sub uploading this masterpiece!
@@garfieldfan77 This song has always been my favourite and the way it’s so intense and jazzy reminds me of James Bond. It’s like an action scene but with an actual choreography. It honestly blows my mind how it actually advances the plot and in such a creative and powerful way. How to tell a important message through music and dance without blood or graphic violence. Brilliant.
Mike Faist 😍😍😍😍
While i prefer Riff singing this to the Jets, I LOVE how it further developed the friendship between Riff and Tony and it makes TOTAL sense dramatically. Plus it’s just so f***in COOL!!!
I almost cried several times throughout this movie just over how spectacularly Steven and Janusz shot it. Here, specifically at around 2:31; that handheld shot backing away with the lighting and their dancing was so gorgeous---it looks good here even with half the frame missing. This film is incredible for a lot of reasons, but most of all, it's a visual feast for the ages. I'm so glad I get to live in the age of Spielberg.
I thought this was the best number in the 2021 version. Interesting choreography and it did a great job of building tension. Even though I knew the ending, I kept wanting Toni to throw the gun into the water. If he had done so, then perhaps Chico would not have had access to a gun to kill Toni at the end. I think I need to re-watch the 2021 movie. While I enjoyed it, I was not drawn into the storyline or the characters to the degree that I was with the 1961 movie, which, for me, is hard to top.
Yeah, it would have been so easy for him to just drop it in the water, lol
For me it didn't beat 1961 either, which surprised me, as that version is not without flaws.
I love this version- way more than 1961 no offense but I think it fits the story well and was interesting to watch with the dancing style like an action scene
You've lost it.
I think it makes more sense here given the context.
Got a rocket in your pocket! And they’re fighting over a gun! Im with you, i think I prefer this version
I come back to the old days, when.Tucker Smith sang the song, so well, and Gina Triconis and Carole d'Andrea marvellous dancers
This was the only scene in which I found Ansel Elgort convincing as Tony. Unpopular opinion maybe but found him creepy. Loved Mike Faist though!
Honestly I don’t know why everyone is trashing elgort’s performance in this movie. Even any other actor playing tony would have no where near the same amount of energy as the other actors. Tony as a character acts wooden and it makes sense too. This is a guy who has been to prison for a year for nearly killing a kid and is trying to change, but the jets and the sharks rivalry is preventing that so he’s gonna act really tired of all this shit happening. And I thought he did a really good job portraying that.
Sorry for my random analysis just had to get this out of my chest lol
@@jericklim7640 I agree with you.
Whenever I see Ansel Egort, all i see is Baby from Baby Driver
@@superjackster0165 He stopped driving cars and moved to New York to join a street gang. Lol

COULDN'T agree MORE!!
I personally think Ansel Elgort is PHENOMENAL in his Portrayal of Tony in this BRILLIANT Cinematic MASTERPIECE!!
LOVE the way you described the subtlety and quiet, different nuances of his Character, too!
Words can not describe how badly I want his voice
My favorite scene from 2021 version
This entire scene was very impactful. Here, the song is about two young men who are trying to sort out a sticky situation. Tony, being the more mature one who knows the damage that guns can do from personal experience (he in this version ended up going to jail after he accidentally killed someone during a gang fight, something that he isn’t too proud of), tries to desperately plead with Riff not to take the gun with him and call off the whole ramble, trying to tell his best friend (in his own terms) about how foolish and terrible of a decision it would be and the consequences he could face as a result. Riff, the more immature one who really doesn’t fully understand, ignores his best friend’s warnings and a rift is placed between them. Riff has gone off the deep end-and there is pretty much nothing Tony can do about it. I also like how Tony’s voice is slightly deeper than Riff’s, perhaps to contrast their maturity levels to each other.
Small correction but Tony didn't kill the guy, he beat him nearly to death, hence why he only did a year in jail for aggravated assault instead of murder.
I had no idea Matt was a Newsie before he got the part as Riff.
I love this
the irony of this having spanish subtitles
This song is very catchy😀😃😄😆😅
Love it
While both this version and the original play have cool before the rumble, there’s an interesting difference in the context. Originally it’s just Riff’s simple way of trying to calm the Jet’s nerves while they wait for the Sharks. Here, it’s Tony trying to convince Riff not to go through with the fight, plus provides some further insight into their friendship and Tony’s history with the Jets
Both work incredibly well
3:51 victory dance
Victory royale
Are they fighting or dancing?
Yes
Both
on 2:44 they had a faceoff! Cool like the song!
Maravilhoso
The Jets are a bunch of hot guys ❤️❤️❤️
Nah….the 1961 change was genius. Tucker Smith as Ice just owns this scene. Rallying the troops.
“PAH” gunshot to Their friendship and
SPOILERS!!!!
also they both get shot
I love West side story it is good. But there is a part that I don't like the part I don't like is when Chino kills Tony. That part is sad
Yeah, and the part when the Jets try to take advantage of poor Anita

DEVASTATING!!

Agreed, that's really bad, too!
At 4:19 Tony made dat dam face
el quinteto no estaria nada mal
Sorry, but to me the 1961 version of “Cool” is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. I’m not taking anything away from these remarkable, talented dancers and actors but this version completely changes the purpose of the whole number and the story. Not COOL. Just my two cents.
It's not a bad thing to change the meaning of a song to fit better with the movie. Hell that's what the 1961 version did

anyone think what would've happened if he just threw the gun in the water???
Ikr! I always get so frustrated at Tony when I watch this movie. He could have thrown the gun away then actually prevented the rumble smh
I know! Doesn't make sense that he doesn't just throw it in the damn WATER lol. He had no reason to keep it, and he's supposed to be so serious about preventing the rumble, which doesn't rhyme with him teasing and playing with Riff like he does here
Nice but it don't compare to the 61( real) version
No
Wrong place
for fuck’s sake
I Know this is how the original but the movie is better
Sorry no comparison to the 1961 version of this number. The 1961 version of “Cool” is the benchmark that cannot be surpassed, it is a one off.
I’m sorry but this doesn’t compare to the original Cool scene in the 1961 movie
I much prefer the 1961 version of Cool. This was good but imo no comparison.
I much prefer this one. The 1961 version had pretty much no purpose in the story, since it happened after the rumble, it was just here to add another song. Here it shows how Tony tries to prevent the rumble to happen, and how he gets in conflict with Riff…
@@valou-scaling The 1961 version had perfect context for the song. Ice was trying to get the Jets to stay cool in a stressful situation like the one they were in since they were literally on the run from the cops after witnessing 2 murders
@@superjackster0165 But they don’t get cool at all ! They literally attempt a r*pe on Anita a few scenes after, and how can you get cool again after this ? Plus it doesn’t matter since the Jet’s story ends with Riff’s death
@@superjackster0165
Because they needed to stay cool 😎
Although I guess this one was better only because Tony did try to stop the fight early on.
@@Killgore-ip2yq No comparison to the 1961 version. First of all Jerome Robbins was choreographer. Secondly Ice. He stood out and the dancing was unbelievable thanks to Jerome Robbins. Baby John had pneumonia while performing that number in a hot garage. They had an ambulance waiting for him when they were through. He was that sick yet performed perfectly. Ice was in charge and he was trying to get them all to keep cool. I also enjoyed the ladies dancing in that number too. All in all, it was a better choreographed dance.
Chico, chico, chico locoooooo💩
Nope!
This is messy overall.
Que decepción, no hay ni punto de comparacion con la versión del 61, donde esta la coreografía???la del 61 es perfecta por qué todos eran bailarines profesionales ,esta versión es nefasta,no puedo terminar de verla...
Then don't!; but let the rest of us enjoy this BRILLIANT Version and stop trying to ruin it, please! 🥺
NOPE!
nahh , the dancing is not as hot as the original................
The scene is more believable than the original, they’re supposed to be gangsters
@@toottoot75 If that's how we're going, then gangsters wouldn't dance at all. Riff and the boys would've jumped Tony, taken back the gun, and that'd be that, end scene. So, is it just believable or watered down?
