- Sam Schneider, a 16-year-old junior at Parkland, was at home when the shooting occurred. He says his sadness has turned to anger as he now pushes to prevent more gun violence. For hours after the massacre, he says, he agonized waiting to hear whether his sister and friends at school had survived. “My biggest fear throughout this whole thing was that I wasn’t sure who was going to be okay,” he says in the video above.

In the days and weeks afterward, as students and families grieved and returned to class, many of the teens who attend the Parkland, Florida, high school have been speaking out about their experiences and demanding there be changes in gun safety legislation so that something like this can never happen again.

my school really cared about this shooting at first. we had to follow a lot of safety procedures. now, they don’t care at all. it makes me mad. we almost had someone come in with a gun, but luckily he just so happened to be nearby not wanting to hurt anyone. we used to have to wait for my principal to say “it’s a fire drill” when the alarm went off. now they just make us go. would those 17 lost lives stand for this? no. I don’t even stand for this. I want change. I’m afraid of being in a school shooting, but if I am I want to be remembered a hero. I want to stand up for parkland.
You don’t need to be a hero . You need to get out alive and back to your love ones

What the actual hell is wrong with you people in the comments, all these people went through a extremely traumatic experience and you have the nerve to say it's fake. None of you were there and survivors are going through enough without you questioning their trauma... not everyone grieves the same or reacts the same in situations like this I honestly would probably be numb to it all as well if this happened to you how would you feel seeing ppl question if your friends and family really died and if this is real... I've been rewatching these videos and just now seeing these comments... how can you be so fucking heartless

No it isn’t a good thing, unless you think handguns are enough to prevent being shoved into concentration camps by an oppressive government. Which will come to be. Literally every super power goes through government oppression at the moment of downfall. Our country is also literally founded upon standing up to oppressive overlords. Did you know that more people are killed by fists and boots in America? Since we’re banning freedom to own tools let’s ban cars while we’re at it.. many, many more people are killed by those. Or, separate the genders at schools so males could concentrate on grades and sports/drama, and females could concentrate on grades and sports/drama. Could have uniforms no fights over girls or tennis shoes. And, could still co-mingle at formals and dates after school. No costly fashion clothes bill for parents.

Less, social pressure... takes some of the pressure off certain pupils... (if your a young student of course you may not like the thought but it certainly probably easier for parents)
of course the best remedy is-
Trained armed resource officers/teachers . (well as long as they don't hide)

So here I am after yet another school shooting where I come across this lovely spew of a comment section….
First off separating genders wouldn’t do anything, if anything this is more divisive. Like what? Where is the logic here? No one is shooting up school or malls because they aren’t wearing uniforms and the right tennis shoes.
I’m not even going to touch the very clearly conservative political narrative here in the next post.
Here’s what I will say…
Guns are the problem
Not what the teachers did
Or the students
Or the “safety standards” at school
It’s guns and gun laws
Why? Because even if the school does everything right there are causalities. Turning a school into a fortress is trying to put a bandaid on a bullet wound. That’s what we’ve been doing for the past 24+ years. We aren’t fixing the problem. We are coming up with solutions that may minimize but not actually prevent tragedy.
Most guns used in mast shootings are obtained legally

A research study done in 2019 states that states with laxer gun laws have more mass shootings
In response to more mass shootings we have put more “armed guards” in schools. However, these armed guards do nothing to decrease the chance of injury or death. In fact in shootings where an armed guard is present on campus the death rate is on average 3x higher.
Parkland: an armed guard was present, guns were purchased legally, 17 people dead 17 injured- willing walked off campus
Covenant: at least one member of staff armed, multiple guns purchased legally, 6 people dead- shot and killed by police
Robb: was confront by a campus officer before entering the school, campus officer was shot, guns purchased legally, 21 dead and 18 injured- was shot and killed by police
Sandy Hook: 28 people were shot in five minutes, school was immediately put into lockdown because the shots rang out over the intercom, police arrived within minutes, 27 people died (shooter killed his mother offsite) and two adults injured- shooter died of self inflicted injuries
NIU: college campus so I have to imagine there were cops on-site but this was in 2008 so I’m not 100% sure, guns purchased legally, killed 5 injured 17- died from self inflicted injuries
Columbine: technically purchased weapons illegally (some through an unlicensed buyer purchased from someone else, and someone else sold them guns knowing they were underage) police response was a mess because we didn’t yet have a way to deal with mass school shootings and therefore no officer on scene, they shot a killed 13 injuring 21 before killing themselves.
I include columbine in this because we often consider Columbine the turning point of school shooting despite there being a history of school shooting in the us before columbine. However this is because Columbine at the time was the deadliest mass shooting event to happen at a school. Since then we’ve had four deadlier school shooting. Just schools that’s not considering any other mass shooting/ killing event in the past 24 years. There plenty more examples of school shootings with armed officials on campus or with shooters who purchase their weapons legally or both, these are just the examples I have readily available.
There needs to be stricter gun laws. Getting guns off the street and only into law abiding citizens hands and mental health reform is the only way we will see a dent in this country.
Our children go to school to learn. Not to be locked away in prison for eight hours with there still being a chance that someone may still come after them with a gun.

I will never understand this shooting. It's probably one of the bigger mysteries, because in situations like this kids are usually very upset, crying everywhere, and funerals are usually going on. I didn't see any funerals that i know of, unless i missed some of it. I honestly hope they investiage this case deeper, because something doesn't add up. The last thing i'd be doing during a shooting is making a video in the closet, i'd be looking for a way to escape.
