1 in 614,000,000 these are the chances of dying in a school shooting. I actually didn't text my parents in the 3 lockdowns we had so far. Mostly because my parents would be scared and if the lines drop I would rather have someone with anxiety try to release it via text.

When I was seven, I was sat down and told they my friend would not be coming back to visit. What I was too young to comprehend at the time was that my friend had died in the Sandy Hook shooting on December 14, 2012.
In 2018, American children were 3 times more likely to die during school hours than a soldier serving a 4 year term in Iraq or Afghanistan.
My generation goes to school every day in fear. We sit in our classrooms and subconsciously check where the best hiding spots will be.
This has to stop. For us. For our future generations. Please.

When I was in the 7th grade, there was a gang threat and this was one of the most dangerous and secretive gangs in our city. It was the second week I spent in America after leaving a traumatic past in the UK. They sent threats to the students and a gun was brought on campus. No one was injured, and no shots were fired, but let me tell you, that was traumatic.

I'm in 7th grade and last year at my school 2 students threatened to shoot up the school, I heard they did end up bringing a gun. Nothing happened and they were expelled
In 6th grade a boy who was made fun of a lot (going along with the whole quiet kid meme) made a list of people he wanted to kill, someone found it and reported it and his bag was checked immediately, they found no weapons and I hate to say this but I was always pretty nice to him so I'm pretty sure I wasn't on the list lol

My school caught a kid with a gun in one of the bathrooms last week. It was the third kid caught with a gun at school in our area THAT day. And the fourth this month. Not to mention the amount of shootings that were actually successful this year.

imagine being the parent who yelled at their child before they went to school, and was angry at them the day before. who grounded them. and suddenly they get a message saying "I'm going to die" without a single text afterward.
There are people in the world who believe the school shootings were staged. One day, I hope I can fight against that, and gun violence.

Exactly. Even if we’re in a lockdown and the teachers are telling us to put our phones away I’m going to put it at its lowest brightness and tell my family goodbye and that I love them. I really hope it never comes to that though.
My middle school never allows phones on us for ANY REASON. Heck, they have to check our binders during P.E 🤦🏽♀️ But I always sneak it in for safety purposes.

My school allows phones even on during lessons which I love. We can use them whenever basically unless it’s during a test or a teacher specifically asks for us to put them away for a certain lesson. Don’t know why so many schools ban them, my school gives us that freedom and in return we don’t abuse the power and listen when they ask us to put them in our bags. More schools should be like that, so sorry about your school that must suck. :(

As an Australian the frustration I feel with America for not tightening their gun laws is so strong. So many lives would be saved.
the problem is, even if we had stricter gun laws, a mass shooter's gonna get hold of a weapon no matter what. they'll always have access to killing. the solution is figuring out that the "murderer" has mental problems and trying to help them or let someone know before they do what they do.

This one. This one right here made me burst out crying, my family lost a close friend during the pulse nightclub shooting, it was her first day on the job and she was killed. I wanted to do a report on the shooting for my civics class but they said I'm to young to know. I'm to young to know that killing people is wrong? @@jellybean8698 There are laws that are in other countries the US doesn't have, like making it illegal to carry such weapons across states, can't get a gun if you have a history of criminal activity or mental illness for the past 5 years, can't have a gun in the same household with someone who has criminal activity or mental illness, etc.
^ These regulations might make it better.
But also with school drills, all we have are hard lockdowns. We just hide, which makes it worse.
If an intruder/shooter is in the building, it should be common sense to get out of the building as quickly as possible. There's even an official way to get out of the situation.
First things first: leave the building when possible. Hide (not in groups) if you can't escape. If you are alone and encounter the shooter, run in a zig-zag motion to make it harder to shoot. If you encounter the shooter in groups or larger numbers of people, get all of them to attack the shooter with all you got. The shooter would try to intimidate and place fear as much as possible; that's what they want. So don't give them what they want.
In fact, schools should really do a shooter drill like this.
Connie Ma one, those types of drills take lots of money and are a waste of time. Two, what does any of that have to do with gun laws? Do you know what it takes to own a firearm? Do you understand the stats? Have you studied the laws? Have you bought a gun? Do you own a gun?

Drills shouldn't take money or a waste of time. And second, some people can easily buy guns without backgrounds checks in some places; some can buy guns with background checks and takes a rather long time to ship.

I remember almost 20 years ago, two men in suits broke into our school and I was in 3rd grade. It was the first year we had any shooter drills like this, and I remember how terrifying it was. We were all crying, and it turned out to be a "prank," and the men were arrested, but I still so vividly remember how terrifying it was and there weren't even any gunshots or yelling.
I can't even imagine how scary it is going through an active shooting. These kids don't deserve this.
When my school went into lock down once I used my friends phone to message my parents and let them know I was okay. My mom was relieved that I messaged her. My dad got mad because I was using someone’s phone when he had taken mine away.

I’m entering high school... and this is a high school where guns have been brought before... at my previous middle school kids joked about bring guns and shooting up the school. But now entering high school not opening my locker on the first try and finding all of my classes isn’t my biggest fear.

Even worse there are some people posting a bloody picture of a girl who got shot,I get they wanna raise awareness but it’s disrespectful and sad. People close to me were gonna go to a restaurant that the shooter went to,luckily they didn’t. I just pray nothing like this happens again in Texas. Or anywhere.

i remember when i was in fifth grade i was huddled under a desk crying and hugging my classmate as a stranger on campus roamed around our classes. my math teacher wouldn't lock the door and she wouldn't turn the lights off until a fifth grader himself did it while crying. everyday i'm thankful that the situation didn't escalate, but the fact my teacher didn't care, the parents weren't called, and that i was sat under that desk with a girl i barely knew crying into each other while writing out goodbyes on small scraps of paper for 2 hours speaks volumes. The fact that the 3 years later nothing has changed and my science teacher is telling us his own plans in case of a school shooter because the schools barely have one upsets me everyday. stay safe fellow students

I can’t imagine being in a class looking over at my friends all with tears down their faces not knowing if we’re ever going to see each other again. Why is this the society that I have to live in? Why should have to fear for my life because a guy with a gun could in the door any minute. Why should I practice a drill that gives me a “chance” to live if someone decided to walk into a school of young, innocent children and shoot them. The horrors that kids have seen because of these shootings are incomparable. Why should I have to worry at looking over at my friend’s body on the ground, while he’s losing blood. But I know that I’ll never see him again. Why.
But 2019 it came back so much more powerful more people died and I am scared to go back to school

Santiago Colla there have been over 230 incidents of gunfire on school grounds in the US since 1999. There have been about 24 shootings in 2019 already. In 2018 there were around 103. That doesn’t feel very safe to me.

This is why I have my phone on my at all times at school even though I'm not supposed to. I'm so sorry you were in a shooting. A student at my school threatened to shoot it up but it turned out to be a bogus threat, but I was so scared that day. All the teachers had paper over the windows and half of the kids didnt show up. I was petrified.
