I really like the scene where Winters starts running to replace Dyke, is stopped by Colonel Sink and quickly send Speirs instead. It's the first time in the series that this "creepy" character instantly become very likable. You instantly feel like "hell yeah, this mf is what we need right now". From this point on in the series, our opinion of him is completely changed and like Lipton say "we don't care if the stories are true or not, we're just glad he's there to lead the men".

Well, it's not just a clever name. Winters trying to go in against orders to lead Easy, then sends LT. Speirs. One of my favorite moments of the series. When he goes into relieve Dike of command, that scene is stunning, every single time. Then, when Buck's helmet hits the ground, it's as Earth shattering as the German artillery. Currahee ♠

First reactor I've seen who, when hearing the guys talk about Speirs, didn't say, "We know he did it because we saw him do it." Instead, Sophie rightly points out we didn't actually see him do it in episode 2 (Day of Days). We know now he did, but good on Sophie for catching that detail from the series.

Speirs shooting the prisoners is true and documented. He was not the only airborne trooper to execute pows during d-day, it was apparently not uncommon. The show's legal team, fearing potential legal trouble, did not want to definitively show it so it was written to be ambiguous.

From some of the books I've read and interviews I've seen, one must remember that these guys were still alive. There were concerns about being brought to trial for war crimes. But yes, Spiers signed an affidavit for the shows producers, I believe.. or maybe it was Ambrose's book.

How is one supposed to handle prisoners when airdropped in with no evidence that the amphibious part of the invasion has been successful. Unfortunately for the soldiers on both sides, with no supply chain to send POW’s back on, hard choices must be made about what to do with them. They’re likely to rejoin their forces if they find them with intel. If they find your forces they could be dangerous even without immediate weapon access. In order to fulfill their front-line role as paratroopers and survive they had to keep moving quickly.

That scene with Speirs running past the Germans, yeah that actually happened, he did that. I absolutely love he did that he is a legend. The gun that Hoobler shot himself with wasn't a Luger, it was a P88, this pistol was very sensitive, especially the trigger and when he put it in his pocket a piece of thread got caught and tugged the trigger causing it to go off , also he didn't die from it either.

3:50 the size of the gun doesn’t dictate how powerful it is, it’s the bullet it fires. Lugers fires 9x19mm pistol rounds, these are rounds also used in MP40 submachine guns the Germans are seen using in the miniseries. This is the same round military forces used today in their handguns and subguns.
In terms of size, the 9mm pistol round can do a decent amount of damage to the body. It’s not gonna “blow your lungs out”, but it’ll definitely mess you up.

Great review! You both have really learned a lot from watching the series, so good job. The way Spiers goes by himself to hook up with I Company and the cones back is a Captain America moment for sure, loved you reaction to watching it.
Heubler accidentally shooting himself in the beginning is tough. From my understanding the Luger could be a very touchy weapon when not in a holster and they would just go off by themselves even resting in a pocket. I believe I read guys getting shot by accident was not a uncommon thing.
One thing on Buck Compton and I think everyone misses this as I only picked up on it after rewatching the series a few times. Before they are deployed to Bastonge Winters meets buck at the movie and he was out of it there, 2 episodes before. Then in the last episode he tells one of the other guys his girlfriend was through with him. It occurs over two episodes, but he would have found out about losing his girlfriend when they last got mail, probably at the movies. So I believe he had so much more going on that when Guarnere and Toye are wounded I think he just lost it from everything happening. I can't recall if I read that in the book Easy Company or not but it would explain how he was so overwhelmed.
Loving the reviews and hope you have more after the series ends. Pacific is the natural next one to watch. May suggest though that you might want to watch either of the movies call Midway before watching the Pacific. Unfortunately, most people do not give the battle of Midway it's overall impact on the whole war. Midway allowed a Europe first strategy for the US.

'Something we felt' is correct. Mental scars lived with all who survived fighting that battle, on either side of the coin. Most dealt with it and never spoke on it. Many others had to receive the minimal help available at the time. That mental health increased over the years as the know how and quality of care of soldiers, in different fields of war became better, most still do not receive the care needed.

The thing with Foy that wasn’t carried across well is the town farmed trees. This means the trees were planted in rows like corn rows or any other crops. So while the Germans had the buildings for hard cover and to hide their positions the allied forces were out in the open. The Germans had clear line of site down the rows and could see where easy company was dug in.

I remember 1 time in the Barracks as we were sitting around drinking 1 of r guys says to Wild Bill "hey Bill, i'am going over and seeing the area of the line you held, you want me to bring anything back??" we all stop and look at Bill who lowers his beer looks him in the eye and says "Yeah, if you can find my leg that would be great " and then he smiled and we all cheered and made many toasts to Bill's leg. Even Maj. Winters got a chuckle then Babe started singing and then it was just a blurr after that , dam Prop Blast that stuff will sneak up on you. epic hangover.
So there is a BIG debate about LT. Dike and the attack on Foy and him being wounded many go with the Clancy story who said that he noticed Dike being wounded but there is no mention of him being hit during the attack. so per the old CO E/506th living history unit who has copies of all the E co & 506th reports and spent alot of time with all the vets - "they hated him (Dike). The only thing they didn't like in the series is that it didn't show the absolutely massive foxhole he had the Co HQ guys dig for him. "It was as big as a hotel". (heard Wild Bill talking about that)
so Dike wasn't hit during the assault on Foy. A lot of people think he was due to the miniseries and some comments Clancy Lyall made (even though he never saw Dike during the assault). There’s absolutely no record of him being hit or mention in the morning report copies."
Also for Speirs run through Foy to make contact with Item Co. which was down too about 22 troopers and they were shooting into Easy's positions in town so he want to tell them to stop shooting

Guys you need to be aware of something here, and I posted this in a previous reaction. When Capt Winters is talking to Lt Dike and Dike yawns, it is not because he is not listening or that he is not interested, in fact he is scared. In my day it was called the “Combat Yawn”. Yawning can be a response to high levels of both anxiety and stress. When we are in a heightened state of tension, our body's natural response is to take deep breaths and increase oxygen intake. Yawning helps regulate breathing patterns and can serve as a subconscious mechanism to alleviate stress. This is what the program has captured here, yet another attention to detail point among so many.

@17:20 - Yeah, it's insane, but Winters was really powerless. He couldn't just tell the higher ups he'd like some replacement officers, because the ones he has are duds. Earlier, with the propaganda tour, it was smart way to get rid of Lt. Peacock before his incompetence killed some people, but there was no way he could get rid of Dyke this way. Basically, you can get rid of them only after they screw up and lot of people die and you are powerless in trying to prevent these deaths.
But I hate this plotline. Real world Lt. Dyke was same as Buck - proven his bravery earlier, but just broken and injured at the time of Foy operations. Thousands of people got to know him IRL, but millions upon millions know him from the series leaving no doubt how he will be remembered. The show really did him dirty.

the luger was a very dangerous sidearm. imagine having a nub or pullback lever the slide of an American sidearm. germans used those big pouch like holsters to mitigate the accidental firing of the weapon. if you were to just tuck into a regular waistband you run the risk of pulling the slide back which acts like a hammer on a pistol discharging the gun. This was actually a common mistake among U.S. soldiers that took them as trophies.

This series is based on the recollections of the surviving men of Easy company, and there is some Hollywood dramatic license involved in telling their story. One of those liberties is Lt. Dike. Dike was the regimental intelligence officer at the formation of the regiment. He was decorated for defending a vital bridge on D-Day (like the ending of Saving Private Ryan) against repeated attacks. He was wounded in Holland defending the regimental headquarters during a German counterattack. He received the bronze star for valor at Bastogne saving the lives of 3 wounded Easy company men while under heavy enemy fire. He was actually seriously wounded in the attack on Foy. Dike wasn't considered a "Toccoa man" by the veterans of the company because they never saw him training there. As the narration said, men thought the company was an annoyance to him". As Lipton said how does a guy come in and gain the respect of their company?

I think you're missing the point of why so many of these guys refused to leave the front line when given a chance. It's because they wanted to be there for each other. They didn't want to abandon their "brothers" and possibly leave them to die because they weren't their to help them. Because the way they saw it they all had each others back and were there for each other. Their dependency on each other to survive creates an unbreakable brotherhood. That's really where the name of the show comes from. Think about it this way. Let's say you and your real life brothers and sisters that you love are in a life or death fight with an enemy. If you're told you don't have to stay here and fight with your family. How are you going to feel about the idea of just saying "okay" and leaving your brothers and sisters to fight without you?

  • @waterbeauty85
    @waterbeauty85 Месяц назад +4

Some of the actual 101st veterans said that Dike just fell apart during the attack on Foy, but others said he was wounded then his lost composure. The show kind of lets the audience interpret for itself by not showing Dike getting hit but showing him shutting down in way that various people have read differently. In the scene when Speirs tells Dike "I'm taking over," and Dike is clutching the collar of his field jacket with his eyes rolling back, some RUclips reactors interpret that scene as Dike frozen with fear while others interpret it as Dike going into shock from a physical wound.
The real Dike had been previously decorated for valor which argues against the idea that he was incapacitated by fear. However, someone can be brave in combat and still be a poor leader. "Lt. Gladly" was an Army lieutenant in Vietnam who got that nickname because he always said "I would never order my men to do anything I wouldn't GLADLY do myself." When he and his troops were pinned down by a machinegun, he ordered a soldier to rise from cover, run within throwing range of the machinegun, and take it out with a grenade. Knowing that would be suicide, and neither respecting nor fearing Lt. Gladly, the soldier didn't hesitate at all to say no to the lieutenant. Lt. Gladly told the soldier "I'm very disappointed in you. We're going to have a long talked after I get back." Then the lieutenant got up to charge the machinegun himself and was immediately cut down and killed. He showed incredible courage but also incredibly poor tactical judgement and poor leadership.
A less deadly example of inept leadership is Dike's attempt to hold a personal conversation with Lipton. In leadership training, "sociability" is taught as one of the characteristics an effective leader should display. Dike attempted to put that principle of leadership into action by trying to be "sociable" with Lipton and failed miserably. The effect of his attempt was just awkward, confusing and off putting to Lipton.

Lt.Dike was severely wounded in the attack on Foy. He was also awarded the bronze star for valor on D-Day for organizing the defence of a vital bridge against repeated enemy attacks. He was wounded in Holland defending the regimental headquarters during a German counterattack. He was awarded a second bronze star for valor at Bastogne saving the lives of 3 wounded Easy company men while under heavy enemy fire. Dike wasn't liked by most of the surviving company veterans because they didn't consider him as a "Toccoa man", he wasn't one of the guys from the Battalion, he was intelligence officer at regimental headquarters and he probably only socialized with officers at regimental headquarters, or intelligence briefings and others in intelligence like Nixon.

The show REALLY doesn't let us interpret anything. They say "Dike was shit". In reality, Dike got the Bronze Start for saving the lifes of three men in his platoon while under fire. Official records say he was wounded and in shock during the attack.
Easy company men didn't know and didn't care and just hated him for the things they experienced. Which is fine, obviously, but not necessarily reality.

He went to D-Day and also got some medals for valor I believe!! Perhaps Lipton had a bad opinion of Dyke and that's why it was written that way in the show because don't forget that the scripts were written from the memoirs and real life accounts from the veterans that you see at the beginning of every episode!! I've never seen anything revealing why he got such a rough time in the show!!
As far as Lieutenant Speirs and his superhero run through German lines and back, I've also seen comments that they actually toned down how far he actually ran, it was a lot further than what they showed in this episode!!!😮😮

Lt. Dyke was not a good leader during time as potrayed, but he was a good soldier, and a better leader on his time during the Korean war.

As far as Lt. Dike goes, the series does portray him unfairly, but he was still a very poor commander for Easy company during his tenure. Norman Dike had been an officer in Headquarters battalion of the 2nd PIR before being assigned as Easy company's new CO (commanding officer) just before Bastogne.
Before coming to Easy, he earned the first of two Bronze Stars for actions that took place between September 23rd to 25th of 1944 (Market Garden). During that time, he was cited as having "organized and led scattered groups of parachutists in the successful defense of an important road junction on the vital Eindhoven-Arnhem supply route against superior and repeated attacks, while completely surrounded.”
As Easy company's new CO, he earned his second Bronze Star at Bastogne, in which “he personally removed from an exposed position, in full enemy view, three wounded members of his company, while under intense small arms fire”.
These events are obviously not depicted in this series.
Personally, he was a strange, detached guy who never bonded with Easy or made much of an effort to try. He had a gigantic foxhole dug for him - which further alienated him from the Easy company guys. He didn't help his own image either by constantly disappearing (it was rumored that when he “disappeared”, he was back closer to Bastogne hanging out with his old buddies in Headquarters battalion).
And he completely froze up during the assault on Foy. It was an active attack, and his freezing up cost many men their lives.
An internet rumor has sprung up that Dike was wounded, suffering from blood loss, etc. This is completely untrue! He just froze up.
Although at least one member of Easy say they thought they saw him get hit, none of Easy company's reports contain anything about Norman Dike being wounded. If he was just some guy in the unit, you could make an argument that maybe it was omitted in error. But the company commander being wounded would surely make it onto multiple reports.
So, he was just in over his head.
The reason Winters didn't relieve him earlier was because he had been decorated for bravery under fire before. Those events being omitted from the show makes Winters inaction in this episode seem mysterious, but in real life, Dike hadn't really fucked up that bad yet.
Now, Hoobler did shoot himself accidentally, but it also happened very different in real life.
Corporal Hoobler did have a pistol in his pocket, and it fired while he was shaking snow off his tent.
Winters memoirs say it was an obscure model of Belgian pistol in .32 caliber that was smaller than a Luger.
Malarkey’s memoirs say it was a Browning .45 caliber pistol.
Neither of which could be confused for a Luger - but Hollywood can't have a WW2 drama without at least one Luger, so...
Hoobler didn't die right there in the snow as depicted, but was evacuated back to an aid station in the rear. When he arrived at the aid station, it was found he had died on the way there.
When people ask about Winters being told not to go out, that didn't happen that way in real life either.
Winters was still the Executive officer (2nd in command) of the battalion. The battalion commanding officer was Lt. Col. Strayer, but the night before, he had told Winters to run the attack. Strayer stayed in his command post when the attack was happening. When Dike stopped mid-assault, Winters started to run out, then stopped himself - reasoning that if he went out there, who would run the attack (Easy was just the assault company - there were a lot of other soldiers involved in supporting their attack). Fortunately, Lt. Spiers was standing near to where Winters was, and the rest is history.
By the way, Spiers run through Foy was crazier in real life. The run was a much greater distance than the show depicts, and he was supposedly taunting the Germans for not being able to hit him the whole run to I company and back.

Just because a gun is small doesn't mean it's not powerful? This woman must think if the gun is small.. It won't do much. 😂 I don't know why you guys are shocked that a bullet killed someone.. ?

An officer in command can't be relieved without cause. Freezing in battle is one of those causes.
