Winters disobeyed a direct order from Col Sink about that second patrol. Captian Nixon wrote up a bogus report about the incident and command didnt find out until years later. Winters suspected that Col Sink had been drinking and wasn't willing to risk his men on such a pointless endeavor.
At a commencement speech at West Point in the late 90's Winters spoke about the event. He said the decision was very difficult ethically, but that he has no regrets about making it.

In the scene where they're retreating to the river and everyone else is giving covering fire, you see an M45 quad mount .50 cal mounted in the back of a half-track. The US made these as a stopgap solution to providing self propelled anti-aircraft capability to mechanized units.
The troops quickly discovered that the M45 wasn't just for AA support...after all, if shooting one .50 cal machinegun at enemy infantry is good, then surely shooting four .50 cals at the enemy is four times as good, right?
They called it the Meat Chopper

I believe that the reason Cpt. Winters didn't send the men on the 2nd patrol is as follows:
    1. Winters is an excellent leader he understands the hard ships and beat down that his men have been through.
    2. The war is winding down and he would like to make sure that as many of them as possible make it home.
    3. Most importantly, the sensible and intelligent individual that he is, he more than likely concluded in his mind that there was no new information to be gained by taking more prisoners on the following night.
    I salute Cpt. Winters.
    Reaction ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The scene where Malarkey asks Webster if he's "nervous in the service?", Webster is the only one who dives for cover. One soldier has no reaction to the explosion at all because they had all seen worse in Bastogne.

More than going to a “prestigious college”, Lt Jones attended the US Military Academy aka West Point. So even though he hasn’t had actual combat experience, he’s had 4 years of army training (and academics).

I have watched this program way more than any other limited series. Every year, at least and several times, per year, in most instances. It delves deep into the
psychological effects of war more than most other series' or films. This episode really touches on how these men have felt going through the war against Hitler's forces. I think of the many companies, battalions, the many brave soldiers who fought in that war - not just on the western front, but also across the pacific.

Tom Hanks even enlisted his own son into the War...This is when Winters essentially "Dad arms" and protects his men of Easy Company in anyway he can, even by lying to command. I love the way they express so visually the soldiers experiences by the appearance of their uniforms. Webster's guilt is what leads him to volunteer for the patrol and earn respect from the men again...

Webster is a helluva narrator. Love how he describes everything and puts things in perspective. Btw, the guys were really glad to have him back. The show took a bit of creative license by showing him getting such a cold reception on his return. Great reaction! :))

Both Winters and Nixon could have been brought up on several criminal charges and imprisoned for many years. Disobedience of orders, dereliction of duty, conduct unbecoming an officer, filing false reports and possibly more.

Okay first of all every one of the old gentleman that you see giving interviews, who are the survivors of this small section of EASY company, has since passed away!! Now that's not to say that there are no surviving members of World War II or the easy company that we did not follow in the show!! But keep in mind that they would most likely be at LEAST a hundred years old or MORE!!! If you were 20 years old in 1944, which a LOT of these guys WERE, you would be 100 years old this year!!!😮❤
I believe there are STILL a FEW World War II vets from ALL branches of our military that are STILL alive but extremely old at this point!!❤❤🇺🇲

All Webster is trying to do in this episode is giving a break to his friends that all seem so battered by Bastogne. But his plan backfired when it forced Martin to lead the patrol since Jones was just an observer (hence why Martin seemed so angry at Webster while choosing him). So it's not necessarily that he wanted to go on the patrol, but he figured that the least he could do at this point was giving Liepgott a break. He's just trying to redeem himself with the boys for not having been there in Bastogne.

When they ask the new Lieutenant when he graduated from Westpoint (the U.S. Army’s Military Academy) and he said June 6th, the reason they laughed was because that was D-Day. That’s why they asked him “Of last year?”

This episode really stretched the truth. Webster was warmly welcomed back. He was injured at the Crossroads and the injury was bad enough to send him back to England. He could not go AWOL like the others who came back. Webster did not go on the mission; he actually manned the 50-caliber gun on the bank providing cover. They probably gave him more credit in this episode because he wrote the book about this situation, and he was doing the narration.
Webster was very smart person who could have been an officer, but wanted to be with the men to get info on how they think. He did not volunteer for missions but did his duty that was required.
As the convoy was leaving town, there was a shot of Cobb riding in a jeep with several MPs. He was arrested for being drunk and fighting with an officer. He was later court-martialed but later had his sentence reduced.

  • @lancewolf2451
    @lancewolf2451 11 дней назад

Winters could have been at best court martialed .. at worst shot. In an interview, Wnters confirms he did this. Also, since they were moving off the front line the next day, Winters didn't want to see anyone killed.

Webster was glad to be back with his buddies but as a rule he never volunteered for anything. As the book this is based on put it, he decided early on that he would perform every duty asked of him but never do anything extra, and he always refused promotion. He was almost the only original Toccoa man never to make corporal or above.

Guys, West Point is the US Military Academy in New York State. Everyone who graduates enters the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. Officers in general are all college graduates who go through officers candidate school after entering the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. You should also understand that the Episode name is a bit misleading. This town was in France and they had not even entered Germany yet.
