Some say Madeleine was the worst, but she was always herself and CHOSE to not have kids. Meanwhile not only did Roderick ALREADY have 2 children, he CONTINUED to have more children carelessly, knowing the deal he made (and made swiftly, at that).
they’re both billionaires so they’re both equally as bad
Yes, that makes Roderick even more of a monster in the end, knowing that he doomed his existing children and kept having kids knowing what will happen to all of them. At least Madeline chose to not have children. She was a ruthless monster too but Roderick’s decisions were truly evil.
💯
@@stptr14 didnt say she ISNT bad, hes just worse. The minute she made that deal, she mentally vowed to never have kids. He screwed whoever he could get his hands on knowing the deal he made, not caring who it affected
While I agree Roderick certainly took on the persona of his nemesis whereas Madeline was alway authentically herself and he should be condemned far harsher than she I wouldn’t say with certainty she chose not to have children as much as it was never an option for her so it wasn’t any great sacrifice.
Even with her nephew and niece there was a distaste for the whole process
In The Cask of Amontillado the jester was buried alive. The short story is incredible. You can tell in the flashback how shocked the sister actually was that Rod agreed so quickly to the deal knowing what the fate of HIS children would be. Nevermore is a repeating line from a Poe poem
My theory on Verna is that she's a type of cosmic being, something similar to The Endless from Dc comics. The best explanation I've read from a commenter in another video is that she's one of the beings that dwell somewhere beneath the earth, as in hollow earth, outside of time and space, a place that can only be reached from a mythical island somewhere in the north pole region called Ultima Thule that Poe mentioned on his poem Dreamland. That's why she told Arthur that she came "top side" to the world, and that he saw her in the "ice" in the north and in ep seven Roderick said that Arthur told the kids stories about people living under the earth, wich was probably the writers hint at what she is.
She is meant to represent the Raven from Poe's story the Raven in which the Raven represents death and loneliness.
Verna's name is an anagram of "raven".
Masterpiece. I genuinely don't throw that word around lightly. Mike Flannagan's Fall of the House of Usher is a masterpiece. It was hugely popular and I think it's still underrated. I'm very excited to eventually get to Midnight Mass now that I've heard your endorsement.
There's a line earlier in the series, where either Roderick or Madeline (I forget who but I'm pretty sure it was Madeline) remarks that the last thing their mother did before she died was strangle an important, evil man, and how they admired her for that. Madeline goes out the same way. Poetic symmetry, brilliant.
Annabel Lee's monologue in the church with Roderick was when I suddenly recognised something about her voice, and realised she was Poppy in Hill House. My mind was blown, she's amazing.
Katie Parker, who plays her, has been with Flanagan since the beginning of his career, as she starred in his first film "Absentia" and has been in most of his work since.
The Cask of Amontillado is a story about a man who drugs someone with a bottle of wine and then buries him alive behind a wall. again, I highly recommend reading the short story because it's very good and gives a lot of context to what we saw in the series. the scene between Verna and Lenore always makes me tear up; it's so powerful! thanks for another amazing reaction 😃
I highly recommend "Hush" and "Gerald's Game", if you're interested in more Mike Flanagan movies.
But lo, a stir is in the air!
The wave-there is a movement there!
As if the towers had thrust aside,
In slightly sinking, the dull tide-
As if their tops had feebly given
A void within the filmy Heaven.
The waves have now a redder glow-
The hours are breathing faint and low-
And when, amid no earthly moans,
Down, down that town shall settle hence,
Hell, rising from a thousand thrones,
Shall do it reverence.
‘The City in The Sea’ is my favorite Poe poem and ‘The Cask of Amontillado’ is a powerful story. Yes, Verna definitely told them in making the deal that when they go, their bloodline went with them. That unfortunately included the noble Lenore. The best of them.
Love the parallelism in how the twins died and how their mother died. Born together, gone together. Parents together, gone together.
That scene with Arthur and Verna was wonderful. It was sad, yes, but it was purposeful. He lived his life and didn’t want to make any deals. What he did, he would pay for…and did.
Terrific reaction, team. You truly rocked this series with your reactions and observations.
This show absolutely took me off guard, haven't seen a Netflix show this good since Mind Hunter.
Yup
Agreed. And I don't even really like horror movies and stuff. But this was super cool and gross and the good amount of scary/creepy. With good literary references.
For me, this series unseated Hill House from my #1 spot, but I am a big fan of Poe's work. This was an absolutely amazing homage to Poe's work.
Me too. Hill House was my number one til I watched this. It’s just a cut above the rest.
Same
I noticed that in that scene in the bar with Verna is that madelaine and Rodrick kinda switched because she was the one that was hesitant to make the deal and gave him a look when it was so easy for to say yes. You would think Madeline would be the one to jump at the opportunity but it was more him.
I also noticed that when offering the deal Verna was making it a black and white scenario. Like when she asked what’s better 40, 50 years of a guilded life or 70, 80 years of suffering and struggle. But if they didn’t take the deal the kids would have a normal life. She made it seem like their life would be horrible. But if you remember Fredrick would’ve been a Dentist. To me that’s not an horrible life And it wasn’t 40 or 50 years for Perry and Lenore. They died quite young. So in mind there was a little trickery in her offer
I’m Hill House, Midnight Mass, Usher, Bly, Midnight Club…and those top 4 are incredibly close, could happily switch them depending on my mood, except Hill House probably consistent No1 for me. Midnight Club is good but definitely not on the other show’s level imo.
Great series and great reactions! I think I've seen all Mike Flanagan's series so far but I didn't realize that the actress (Katie Parker) who played Annabel is the same actress who played Poppy until watching this episode with you. 😂 I recognized her voice in the scene with Roderick in the church. She's really great! As are all of the ensemble of actors working on Flanagan's series.
I like that they didn't twist themselves into pretzels trying to justify not killing Lenore. I think a lesser writer would have had her live.
But having Verna express sympathy at that momentfelt wrong to me and here's why: Her deal led to the deaths and increased the suffering of 100,000s of people, all of whom were unaware and many of whom would have been good people like Lenore. But we're supposed to believe she feels bad about Lenore in particular?
This was clearly written this way to garner sympathy from the audience, not to adhere to any internal logic. She can't willingly put hundreds of thousands of innocents to the sword and then feel bad about this one.
"It was the Ushers who did it, not Verna!"
She offered them the deal knowing the kind of people they were and what was likely to happen; it's why she chose them. If she had wanted less death of innocents and less suffering there were other deals she could have made, or she could have made none. She enabled mass suffering and death, but claims to feel bad about one.
Been waiting for the final episode to tell you....😂😂 When I was going through the series I was convinced that Madeline was an AI robot. 💀🤣
In episode 7 when she goes to take off her hair clip I thought that was going to be the big reveal of her robot skeleton. Lmao!! I am such a dummy.
I vote for the Hannibal series next. Similar tone to this. Mary McDonnell, who played Madeleine, was Stands With a Fist in Dances With Wolves. You can also check out her excellent work in the Battlestar Galactica series.
She was iconic in the closer spin-off series. Not to mention she's Dr. John Carter's mom in ER.
This one was almost more of a dark comedy. Midnight Mass is totally my favorite, but they’re all great in their own way. Some more philosophical, some more funny, some more romantic, some more gory, but I love them!
❤I love the way this was tied up. The Poe short story The Cask Of Amontillado which is thought to be his most perfect short story is a story of revenge, vengeance, foolishness and murder. The the story of a man named Montresor who decides to seek revenge against a man named Fortunato, who has insulted him. He lured him to his wine cellars by promising him a taste of Amontillado. He buried Fortunato alive chained to a wall. The Raven of course is Verna and she is ready to collect on the debt owed. I think Madeline and Roderick thought they could buy their way out if the deal or renegotiate the deal. One of my favorite nods to Poe's enemies was the way the creators of this show knew of Poe's animosity toward fellow poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and they made Longfellow a jerk in this story. As you may know there is a raven carved carved into Poe's headstone and above the raven is "Quoth the Raven, Nevermore". Dupin is the winner at life......not Roderick 😊
How about seeing the actor playing Reilly in Midnight Mass, play Roderick Usher in the next show. A man willing to immolate himself to avoid becoming a predator, to the most callous predator of all.
You should read the poem "The Raven" by Poe and then rewatch this last episode. I only have a passing knowledge of Poe's work, but I knew most of the stories that the episodes are based on. The more you know about the stories the more you see just how well this series is written.
The Hannibal series is worth a watch
Art direction is incredible
I would love to see T&S react to this incredible show too.
She said bloodline
Gerald's Game is yet another great King adaptation by Flanagan, also with Carla and Bruce in leading roles.
you saw Doctor Sleep first :D You say it at the beginning of the Hill House reaction that you're excited cause you loved Mike's work on Doctor Sleep ^^
A character kept behind the floodlights, but 'The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym' is one of Poe's lengthiest and robust tales.
I think the scene that happens around the 6 minute mark is referring to the cask of amontillado story!
If you get the chance, I'd recommend reading Poe's short story of "The Raven."
Really enjoyed your reaction to this series. Your discussion at the end of this episode to wrap things up was really enjoyable. I'd have a tough time ranking the Flanagan series myself, although I think Hill House would be at the top. Hope you check out more Flanagan. I think you'd really enjoy the film Hush.
Awesome reaction of my favorite The Fall Of The House Of Usher episode!!!!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I adored this series. Not as scary or emotional as “Hill House” or “Midnight Mass”, but it’s witty and deep and extremely well-done. Probably my second favorite Flanagan series after HoHH.
Verna is meant to represent the Raven from Poe's story the Raven in which the Raven represents death and loneliness.
Verna's name is an anagram of "raven
“Prophet!” said I, “thing of evil!-prophet still, if bird or devil!
By that Heaven that bends above us-by that God we both adore-
Tell this soul with sorrow laden if, within the distant Aidenn,
It shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore-
Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore.”
Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”
Verna is an agent of karma in a way she is the one that carries out concenquenses. she is beyound time and space and she isn't good or evil either. She gives people a chance to change their ways but when they don't she is the one to carry out the concenquenses of their actions. She tries to get people back onto the right track and it hurts her to see them go down a distructive path but she can't change that because of the freedom of choices and they must make their own way for better or for worse and that is why she was happy that Pim was willing to face up for his actions and face the concenquenses of his actions..he was the first person in a long time to do so. I really like this show and as always the final ties it up well. Mike is working on a short story of Stephen King at the moment and he is also said to maybe be doing his own version of the Dark Tower books. Any way if you want more from him check out Hush that he wrote with his wife and she stars in it,Oculus,Ouija 2 orgin of evil those are also good movies of his. Grate reaction and glad you liked this one like me.
17:30 my husband wtf 😂😂😂
The Cask of Amontillado, as already posted, is the Poe short story of a man named Fortunato whose gets bricked into the walls of his basement home. Bye Bye Fortunato.
Lenore was really the best of the ushers and while her grandfather changed the world for the worst her one choice in saving her mother helped saved millions of lives and she’ll be in a better place unfortunately the rest of her family won’t
Throwing in a vote for Oculus as the next Flanagan movie! It will mess your head up (in a good way)!
Though it didn't get an episode title to itself, Cask of Amontillado is one of Poe's best. It's short, sinister, and will stick with you.
The elements are layered in before they all collide with the entombment - Fortunato is the name of the protagonist's vexation, the jester costume, Roderick talking to the bricks, the chains rattling. For God's sake Montresor!
I've seen Bruce Greenwood in many roles, but he was so great in TFOTHOU. He did an incredible job playing a man with so many demons. The only nitpick I have for the series is that I could NOT reconcile that the actor playing young Roderick became older Rod. They look nothing alike and they were played so differently. Older Rod was hardened and mean and it was a stretch to imagine young Rod turning into such a cold and ruthless man.
Man, this is the final episode of the series, but at least it was fun while it lasted.
I highly recommend Stephen King's THE NIGHT FLIER, where two rival reporters (Miguel Ferrer, Julia Entwistle) tail a vampiric serial killer who travels by plane and claims his victims at small isolated airports. Its so bad its good.
I always love your reactions. Definitely my favorite reaction couple. PLEASE watch Sons Of Anarchy. It is a longer series (7 seasons) but I know you both will love it. My favorite tv show ever. Please give it a watch. I would love to follow you through that journey!
I lover her disdain for Patrick, just a bag of coke in his grave and the complete opposite for Lenore, that ending was perfect.
My rankings would be:
1. Usher
2. Hill
3. Mass
4. Bly
5. Club
Yes
Mark Hamill 'Hitman Lawyer'
House of Usher' rich people in a horror story.
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😊
Seat beats on? It's gonna be good.
Can you two watch one of these shows next:
1. LOST (six seasons)
2. Banshee (four seasons)
3. Black Sails (four seasons)
4. Boardwalk Empire (five seasons)
5. Spartacus: Blood & Sand (four seasons)
Watch Gerald's Game!
Great show!
Now it’s time to watch other underrated stuff from Flanagan like Oculus if you haven’t already. And diving into Del Toro films 😉
Oculus is wildly underrated and really put Mike on my radar
Hey if you guys havent seen it prior to the channel you guys should definitely watch Thelma And Louise 1991!
you can skip Midnight CLub easily.. its not good at all and Flanagan hadnt had much too do with it.
Watch OCOLUS and "Ouiji: Origin of Evil" (the great prequal/sequal to the very bad first film haha)
TBR, my man! There's so much I've wanted to discuss about this show and you at least hinted at one. I'll just say it -- was the deal that Verna offered so bad? I've seen other reactors say it was a horrible deal, but was it? Actually, I don't think we have enough information to say. How long would Roderick live? We don't know and that's pretty important. If he dies from a heart attack in a month, that's a lot different than if he lives to be 97. Also, how long will the kids live if they don't take the deal? No guarantees on that. What if they don't take the deal and then they all die in a couple of weeks when the company plane crashes? Maybe taking the deal would actually give the children longer lives. No way to tell.
Whew, I'm rambling on, eh? Well, really enjoyed watching you guys react, as always. Thanks!
Oh come on! Yall can watch The Exorcist if he makes it!! Don't wuss out! LMAO
😂
React to the film: THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (1979), a classic of the Haunted house genre, and which served as inspiration for several others that came later, you will enjoy it.
It may be a controversial position, but perhaps Roderick has a complicated relationship with his children because he was in foster care and adoption...being an abused kid can make you selfish and broken, take it from an adoptee like me with those issues. Once you feel abandoned by parents, it's easier to abandon those who depend on you.
Also there is so much Poe incorporated. If you dont know it, it might not make complete sense.
Not being absurdly rich doesn't equate to "being miserable " 🤦♀️
It's too bad you weren't more familiar with Poe's work, I feel you would have enjoyed the entire series more.
"70 years of being miserable" - that can only be the viewpoint of someone who values money above all else. Coming from a third world country, I've seen some of the richest take their own lives and some of the poorest with the widest smile because they're surrounded by love.
You should watch DC stargirl series
You cut out a lot of good material to make it shorter. You cut out the best line (paraphrasing Verna…)
“One of my clients can walk down Fifth Avenue and shoot someone and never have a consequence at all.”
And that beautiful poetry that Verna recited while she is putting a token on each of the Usher family on their tombstone!
Nah, Verna was the Devil... some interpretation of the Devil at least. The Grim Reaper or The Angel of Death dosen't make deals...
She's neither.
She's an powerful entity not really fitting into either category, playing games with mortal lifes.
She's the nameless thing not bound by time and space that Arthur Pym met in the Hollow Earth on his expedition.
If she was something remotely akin to an angelic being at all, it would be one of the "Ill Angels" mentioned in "Dreamland".
But even in that case calling them angels might be just an attempt to put a recognizable name to something more alien.
