- Architect Nicholas Agius created a suite of different spaces in his 24sqm micro apartment by using a hybridised door and kitchen that folds like a toolbox yet complimenting the original design of the famous Melbourne Art Deco building - Cairo Flats.

I was like, it faces north and gets a lot of light?! Then I remembered that this was Australia, hahahaha
Emilie Coats haha. That's true. I was confused at first.
Good point I thought it was odd too
I thought he meant indirect light but good point!
I LOVE this space!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He actually means hes getting enough but not direct sunlight
The yellow is emitting good energy
I am not a fan of yellow but it's really nice.
Thanks, algorithm!
Beautiful place, I love small multi functional spaces but I fear tiny apartments like this being trendy will only give property developers the excuse to charge huge prices for tiny spaces
They already do. This is a flat in Fitzroy, he likely payes over 2500 AUD per month, excluding utilities. Fitzroy is the expensive, gentrified capital of Melbourne that only the rich hipsters can afford to live in
Property developers don't dictate prices.
@@meowmeow5591 lol I live in Fitzroy and only pay 690 AUD a month. Even though it's a big 2-story Victorian house (i live with 3 people)
@@dridri3000 Are those three people your wife and kids? Because if not, then you're not doing any better than this guy with his expensive tiny house.
It's already happening. All over the world
"I live here with my partner and medium sized dog. And we seem to get along fine"
That's a hell of an introduction!
I love how even architects use IKEA furniture. Makes me feel a lot better about my addiction to the store ;-)
to bad ikea furniture is usually garbage quality
saammmy7 rad.I.Slovakia
@@ej3016 Same here - I have chairs I've had for over 20 years and they are still excellent. I repainted them a couple of years ago and they actually look like new now.
@@milosjakovljevic4850 My bed, my mattress and my chair are 10+ years old and good as new
It's anything that should be made out of plywood, Ikea typically makes out of far inferior composite board.
But if you buy stuff made of solid lumber or metal it will probably last a long time.
Ok, that "go-go gadget" kitchen is the coolest thing I've ever seen! And it's so homey!
I really liked his thoughtful, insightful and clear explanation of his vision.
Unpretentious, practical and connected to the facts on the ground.
Like his sense of harmonics with the past, instead of imposing some 'vision' on it - usually destructive.
Dee Mic Right! It was so clear and precise. I really enjoyed listening to him explain his space.😍
"Unpretentious" he's a hipster with a flat in gentrified flat in Fitzroy goin about about "preserving" continuity and design while living in an apartment that 3 first generation immigrant homes were demolished so they could build to house rich people
I like the "everything has its place" ship aesthetic and the way the kitchen fols away to reduce visual clutter. The tub is a great, must-have for me (I only bathe rather than shower like most people seem to nowadays).
I used to live in the same apartment for couple months during the lockdown in 2020 - it is an old tiny apartment building but beautiful. Love to watch!
A tiny space that someone appears to be truly living in. I just discovered this channel...and this is the first tiny space that shows life. All the others have been "design projects."
Simple. Elegant. Oddly cozy looking. ~Smile!
Congratulations!
This is an amazing use of space! The bed behind the kitchen is rather scary, but it makes a lot of sense.
wow. i used to live at the cairo flats, but in an unrenovated studio. i felt so cramped, slightly claustrophobic, even though the rear wall is all window, and i had my own courtyard. this is incredible, you made it feel so effortlessly spacious.
LOVE THIS!! omg so creative and beautiful! the fact that the color yellow is used just makes me so happy because it brightens up the room SO MUCH!! and contrasts with the greenery so well! I can tell this TINY space was SO WELL thought out!! (:
Cute however bedroom is way to tight. That's a hole
Yea, too small
Cup of tea love?
Yes please
Hang on I'll just unfold the kitchen
Gotta say, I thought that too! 😄 I drink about six cups a day! There’d be a lot of folding.
Too good 😂😂😂😂
This is a clever architect! The lines, the painted wood... everything's warm and honestly designed and built.
I love the yellow, and the rustic storage with soace for lots of stuff, which many other designers feel we should live with nothing, as I feel better in a messy clean way.
Fantastic design and use of limited space!
Thanks Edric! It's indeed a clever design and super cozy apartment too!
To me, the main downside of the apartment is that the bedroom is next to the main door. I don't know if I could comfortably sleep there. Other than that, I love it!
I'm wondering about the smells from cooking. I'm the cook for our family😊 and there's no way - some of the meals I make are very scented!
This is one of my all-time favorites for small space design.
I like to rewatch this one. It just brings me joy! - and inspiration. Thank you so much for sharing this tour.
I love the use of yellow in the design!!
Ahhh I love it! I love the fold out kitchen and not the mention the COLOUR
My apartment is a bit larger but I also used the same flooring for the entire place to keep a sense of flow and continuity inbetween rooms. I loved the kitchnen!
farolitodepapel I
Funny, I did the opposite. I would get so bored with the same flooring everywhere.
This is probably the most creative and functional small space I've seen so far.
the kitchen looks absolutely beautiful. I would use the bathroom space for the bedroom and vice versa just to have some more privacy for the sleeping area.
Don't know if it's the camera angle but the bed seems tiny. I would wake up with one leg inside the kitchen...
Vitor Serra 😂
The bedroom screams at my claustrophobic self. Being stuck by myself in a lift, on the top floor of hotel, in a foreign country, with no means of commination, will haunt me forever .
😆😆😆😂
Looks like it's a double. Good enough for a single person.
It's like 140x200 bed, it's enough of space for two people who likes to cuddle. If one likes to sleep like a starfish then for sure it's too small.
What I don't like about it is 1st kitchen next to it with open space to grab water etc but mainly that it's straight next to main door and washing machine under. But hey, if it suits them then who cares 😜
I absolutely love how your home is- the floor, lights little nooks with plants, the shapes and colours 🙏💖
I love the design and color makes it more radiant... except the bedroom... feels like you can’t breathe
It's cool to see the actual house the designer lives in for once! Instantly made me feel like this place was way more livable than most of the stuff on NTS
As an amateur with woodworker, i typically feel overpowered with the entire arrangement ruclips.net/user/postUgkxrYREG3-7f1Aqk9ams3ZESRNzGnfdUtyQ . Be that as it may, this arrangements drove me through with much clarity and effortlessness woodplans. Works i now work like a genius. That is great!
Simply fabulous.
I could be happy living there...
Minimalism at it's finest! Every possession is thought out with care, and only things you truly love and need has a place in your home!!
Beautiful
Looks fab...was wondering do his clothes get slightly damp all the time in the bathroom?.. I guess he never has to iron though 😀
i am wondering: where is the dogs sleeping place, the vacuum cleaner, the iron and the chairs for the table?
the dressing room is a different part than the bathroom, isn't it? or maybe i'm mistaken.. I think it's similar to Japanese bathroom - they have a dressing room
The hanging space is right next to the bathroom sink, so I'm thinking it's in the bathroom.
@@TH-pb4ux no carpet so they probably don't have a vacuum
Iron (if they have one) would be on one of the many hideaway shelves
Dog likely sleeps in the bed with the people
Ah ok I never would have imagined that someone in western civilization wouldn't have a vacuum. could be as well that someone else cleans his room and brings the suff and he gives his shirts to the laundry. ...
I actually like the idea of the clothes in the bathroom. Seems pretty utilitarian and efficient. Only concern is the clothes becoming damp from hot showers or spray
I want to become an architect when I grow up, so I’m watching these videos
That is very exciting! Have you made a shoebox diorama yet? Would love to see a baby architect's first designs. Good luck! Practice hard and you'll be incredible at it. 🌞
This is one of the most curious designs I ever seen, a very small place that contains the esential spaces oh a house... I simply love it
Amazing! My favorite micro apartment so far - excellent design
My favorite design. I keep coming back to this video again and again .
I love these type of tiny home videos with all the different compartments etc. Nice one!
Oh dear I'm so much inlove with this space saved sleak decoration and colorful lively home…!!!!!!!!!
The building is as old as my mother, yet looks very modern. I can't believe this was built pre WW2.
? Didn't he say it was from the sixties? That's way after WW2.
@@gardenjoy5223 Nineteen thirty-six.
Art deco is fantastic
love the mood changes yang and yin energy. yay for yellow
I'm retired with a my son with autism. Love for us to have a tiny house with a loft for Brett. We lost his dad. We had plans to do this together for our son to make him so happy. I'm still working on our dream in memory of his dad. Love love this tiny house too.🥰🥰
I love the kitchen! Very vibrant with yellow color but also so neatly white when its closed!
Nice appartment but I don't like the clothes in the bathroom...
Yeah, that seems like moldy clothes waiting to happen.
rese l live in Australia and for some reason mould never seems to be a problem in bathrooms. Or at least I have never found it to be so and neither have any of my friends. I don’t know if it’s because people tend to have windows that open - and are actually used - plus exhaust fans that often automatically go on with the lights..
@@terrybaby6146 yes it does not happen me and my boyfriend lives together in 2 storey house now because he rlly rich but we use to live in a small apartment and out clothes were in the bathroom and never got mould on it
@@terrybaby6146 Plus it's really dry. Here in the Philippines you could have all that and you would still get mold. You'd have to run the A/C all the time (and run up a huge electric bill) if you wanted to store your clothes in the bathroom. I don't even store my bath towel in the bathroom.
Aimee M Sydney, where I live, is actually very, very humid. The only time I have ever had mould on my clothes was after about three solid weeks of rain in February which is also the hottest month. No air conditioning.
Despite the micro size of the space, the architect manages to create a hybrid kitchen and doors which fold flat ... this is incredible, and a very clever way to save space.
Where's the dog?
Where's his partner? Maybe he put them in a hideaway....
He dead!
He didn’t bring out the “partner” (code word) ‘cos if he were actually comfortable and open he would have just directly said “boyfriend”.
The black widow in the toilet ate the dog
There’s a properly designed compartment for that, obviously
Love the kitchen! The pop of yellow is beautiful, I'd want to leave it open all the time!
This feels like one of those Chinese puzzle boxes, where you can only open a drawer by opening another.
Love the idea of making a small space as functional as possible, great job with that kitchen!
Well done, it is beautiful, clever and thinking of future aging process / patina is great, (instead of having cheap materials aging badly)
I really liked the apartment in general, but what most caught my attention was that double sliding furniture that was used to divide the spaces and at the same time as a door and hide the kitchen. I found it interesting to include the closet in the bathroom, but I don’t think I liked the idea very much. However, I liked it very much overall.
Fact of people that actually cook:
--ridiculous size of fridge
--No prep surface space
--books over kitchen shelves will melt with grease
Also, the clothes/wood in the bathroom might absorb humity of warm showers that looks like mold films
There were like two counters for prepping?
Easy. It is just a story, a demo unit.

normasea Sorry try 0:41
I didn't even see the fridge and was like does he live without a fridge?
My Nan lived in the flats that backed onto Little Fleet Street and I used to walk down the little alley ways to the shop on the corner of an alley way and Hanover Street. I never knew that Cairo Apartments existed. I just thought they were part of the convent and because the trees and foliage were quite dense, I never noticed that it even looked like a liner. Thank-you for sharing!
It’s all fun and games until you have to quarantine.

I would live there for quarantine

I love this so much....and want to recreate in my flat in Oxford! Amazing.
So pleasant. Everything just looks and works right.
I've got hocked up with Never Too Small after this video. Now watching it again after 4 years ... it still fascinates me.
Love the content this channel creates, just wish the video could've been longer.
love the fold out kitchen, and how it can be shut again to look plain
This design would work beautifully in a tiny house community.
Watching this straight after another NTS Cairo flat - this one I prefer soooooo much more.
I don't know about the bedroom part, it's kinda tight and claustrophobic.
While luxury class coffins do provide more space and air for breathing, remember that this IS minimalistic, and breathing IS overrated, isn't it? Trust him, he is an architect :')
Beautiful. Love the splash of yellow.
I forget that Australia is on the southern hemisphaten and was like "why would north facing be a good thing?"
The way the kitchen and all the spaces are solved is magnificent. All the choices that have been made make it more functional.
Bedroom was too suffocating, and the clothes beside the sink (touching it?????) is impractical. The space for the living area could have been borrowed to allow for a small walking space beside or in front of that bed.
I love the idea of continuity in materials. Transitions do delineate spaces and reveal their size.
So thoughtful, especially taking the aging in consideration!
He never cooked? His kitchen is so clean n tidy....
Obviously he cleans after himself and it would be stupid to not tidy up, knowing a camera crew is gonna come film your home..
That why i asked it...even though he cleaned it when camera come to but it looks like he never "touched" his kitchen for cooking something...or he just makes salad or sanwich every day...
@@endahmuljana6830 he might eat out a lot too. Many people who choose to live in a minimalistic or small place usually spend more time outside and use their place more to sleep or study.
@@greyscalesx Agreed
Now, this is what you call compact living on a large scale! Very nice!
these sliding designs are awesome, and the way to go-- but I don't think people know the cost. it cost a lot of money to buy this stuff. even a fold up bed can be $2500
Brilliant idea... First look of the kitchen impressed me to the core.. I paused and checked again.
You know, regular people have their Yorks, Terriers, Bulldogs, but us, minimalists, we just call them THE MEDUIM-SIZED DOGS ;D
Whippet
maybe the dog is taken from shelter and not of any particular breed (yes, regular people also take dogs from shelters and not just buy them)))
@@juniju1i it's a joke
Such creativity!!!! I've never seen rooms separated this way
It seems like the key to a space like this would be ventilation.
Yes, one fart and the whole place would stink.
Its beautiful and simple , elegant and spacious and i LOVE the colour chosen for the kitchen.
My only complain is the bathroom door. I think it should be a sliding door instead of a normal one, to save space when opening it
One of the most intelligent designs I have seen...
Impressive considering its packed in 24sqm (if we go by the description). I thought you need atleast 45-50 sqm to make a decent living space with all the daily requirements of modern lifestyle.
Well I live in 18m2 with my cat and it has all the requirements of modern lifestyle :D no need of huge space, only thing you need is good organisation and lots of light.
Gross Rhino Well I suppose you can pack everything in a tiny space but its not ideal and formal living space. You need about 50sqm to make a modern comfortable accommodation which includes living/dining/kitchen/bedroom with robe/ensuite and also a small laundry.
K Ben I still think all this can be in smaller space. Yes, I dream about 50m2 flat, but it is not real for young people that were not born rich-class or got super lucky getting high payed job. :/ And my apartment is not just “packed up” .. it has everything you wrote apartment needs. :) Its just angle of view
Gross Rhino Yeh 50sqm does the trick. My first home was an apartment, about 60 sqm excluding the balcony and storage. Its now my investment property, later I bought an older house on a large block of land and built ancillary accommodation at the rear on 70sqm to rent. The additional rental incomes helps me pay off the mortgage. Its not easy for young people to enter the property market in Australia but my parents helped me so I was fortunate. Dont worry eventually we will all be able to buy our dream house where we can retire :-)
K Ben Wow this is impressive, I hope I will achieve this too later in my life when I will have family. Now I must get a mortgage for 8mil CZK (476,000 AUD) to buy 40m2 flat :D
An eclectic mix of the industrial and modern. Its seamlessly well put together and it works. A very cozy place!
Please include floor plan in the video
age and patina. I live an an old apartment - this is such an important part of things that are built to last. It's sort of the missing link between things that are disposable, and things that aren't.
Your design is so brilliant.
I have a same problem with my room.
Would you mind if We discuss for the copyright of this design? I love to hear from you.
Best regard.
24m2 : 2 humans and a dog. Impressive! Love it. Beautiful harmonious and inspiring space.
Lol at all the people going “bedroom is so small!” in the comments. You’re clearly not from Europe.
I'm from Europe and think the "bedroom" is small. Because it's in this kitchen-wall and the high is missing.
I like the feel of the main space with the kitchen open. It feels more home. Less like a monochromatic box. Really ingenious use of space.
I love your couch i wish you could link it from where you got it

Loved the clever way to hide the kitchen and the fact that it was yellow to go with the front door etc. Also loved the bookcase/pantry door. Thanks for sharing.
I just want to live in an apartment without roaches. Thats asking for a miracle in new york
@Kaitlon, in New York, if people rid their unit of roaches, does the problem come right back? If so, how do they enter the unit?
I've never had them, but I'm staying vigilant and learning what I can. I do live in a different state, tho.
wow newstome Its really hard to kill them off since they’ve been alive since the age of the dinosaurs. I try to clean the eggs and leave no spare crumbs, put poison traps and block any holes but the neighbor apartments most likely have them also and they migrate into ours.
Gross thing is, they truly eat anything. I found out they like paper, cardboard, their own kind, even my damn snot napkins when I was sick...
One dumb roach fell in my betta tank because they love water too. Betta ate him and left only pieces lol.
Kaitlon, thank you for your feedback. It is always good to learn something new. That sounds like an awful thing to deal with! Interesting (and gross) about the fish.
I saw in a video what looked like dozens of the small offspring coming out from an electrical outlet. In a comment, someone wrote that they took off a cover plate from an outlet and it was full of dead cock roaches.
Someone people say they can come through the plumbing, so you can use drain covers to prevent that.
I really hope they can't really come through the water pipes.
But I'm thinking, in an apartment building, they can probably just enter other units from the hall. Or arrive in delivered packages!
Kaitlon, I thought I would pass along the best tips I learned in my search in case you haven't heard of them.
1) Put bait/food in a jar that curves inward near the top, so they fall back in when trying to crawl out. (Oil this section, too, if you want.) A large, clean, sauce jar should be the right type of jar.
2) In conjunction with #1, at bedtime, after cleaning all crumbs up, build a "wall" of duct tape around edge kitchen sink, leaving a little bait or dirty dishes in the sink. With the sticky side facing outward, (gross) they will get stuck trying to climb in.
3) Seal openings around cupboards etc.
I'm not sure if this part is true: I heard they won't mate if they can't feel something right above them touching their back. Example: narrow space between the top of an oven with a cabinet right above it, leaving a 1/4 inch gap or less.
4) In case it's true they can enter through water pipes, you can plug sink and shower drains.
5) If you go on a long vacation, have a house sitter make sure you toilet and P-traps on sink drains don't go dry from evaporation. A plumber claims that lets cockroaches enter. Creepy.
I've been hoping to find a way to put something around my entire doorway and windows, such as a film of scented oil to encourage bugs to stay out. Any ideas on that?
PS I don't think I will ever move to New York because of your comments on roaches. Haha. Maybe the cost of rent will go down in NY if enough people are discouraged by such accounts.
wow newstome kind of what you said but always close off sinks with these small drain things where the water can go through but roaches can’t (and you can leave it in). Also always put down the toilet lids because they often come up through there. Generally it is best to call the pest control regularly. If possible have them also do the outside of buildings (I know that can be difficult in apartment buildings, so especially in houses make sure to always do the garden, if it rains freshen it up) as for windows and shafts the pest control Has a brown paste that they can put into the edges. It somehow stops them from entering or going near (also put it in closets and cupboards entrances to stop them from going in). Make sure to always be super thorough when cleaning (pull back your furniture clean underneath, possible add traps there). When moving in make sure to completely work through the place. It takes work but it is easy and you can do it yourself. Here you should clean all the areas between tiles and fill them out if needed (the material is really cheap and you can get it at any department store, also your place will look nicer). Check all the corners and edges and finishing between built in furniture and walls etc. (here you can use silicone to make sure of this, again same like wir the other stuff it is cheap and easy to come by). Clean ACs regularily and always put some brown paste stuff into the edges. You should also take care when opening windows and doors. Don’t leave them open more than necessary and always use a mosquito net. Like you said if you travel make sure everything is closed off. Toilets, sinks, drains, even vents where possible. Make sure the house is clean before you go. Never leave dirty dishes out and after you eat just clean after yourself (a quick vacuum would do and only takes 20s). Use a dishwasher if possible so you can directly put your stuff away without having to clean it quick. Keep your laundry in a closed basket (srsly finding a roach in it is just ewww). Finally if possible talk to your neighbors. If they also make sure to call the pest control regularly that helps. Good luck.
The housing is so simple. That😮the video is very short. Perfect
