Brad & Lex, you’ll love their "Black Coffee in Bed", "Another Nail in My Heart" and "Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)"!!!
They play instruments, but not in this video. Paul Carrack on lead vocals, sang lead on a hit song by Ace and a hit song by Mike & The Mechanics!! I saw Squeeze in concert Nov 1987, great show!!
Squeeze is the best! Such great songwriting. I would agree, all of these are great songs, @surlechapeau!
One of my favorite bands 💖
@ surlechapeau I bet that was a fun concert 😎
They have so many good songs, can't wait for more reactions
Finally someone reacts to Squeeze! Maybe it's time for another great band from this era ? English Beat has been overlooked by most reactors too.
Thanks for the info. I'm not familiar with Ace, but definitely remember this tune and Mike and the Mechanics. I'm an American born in 1979.
I second all of those nominations!
This is one of those groups from the '80s second wave British Invasion that didn't get the dap that they should have had! I LOVE SQUEEZE! Thank you for reacting to this song!
One of the Iconic British band from the late 70s to the present.
Songs like, Labelled With Love, Pulling Mussels, Cool For Cats, Another Nail In My Heart, Up The Junction, Slap & Tickle and many more also gave rise to Jools Holland.
You have just listened to one of the greatest songs ever written.
‘Pulling mussels from the shell’ has to be on your list. A classic. 😊
Started in the late '70s. "Cool For Cats" was a hit back in the late '70s. Also "Up the Junction". A little more new wave/post-punk with a funky vibe in their earlier years.
They had a Hall and Oates vibe to them at times, kind of blue eyed soul. Doo wop like.
This song/video here was early '80s. "Black Coffee in Bed" and "Hourglass" were other '80s hits from them, video/song. "Satisfied" also in the early '90s.
"Up the Junction" and "Hourglass" are two of my favorites!
The band's original arrangement of this song was more an up-tempo Beatlesque pop song -- but Elvis Costello was producing the album, and convinced them to slow it down and inject more of an R &B feel. And the result was this -- their breakout hit.
As for the lyrics, Brad...
It IS about being tempted -- and succumbing -- and being found out -- then being dumped -- and then dealing with the consequences.
Also Elvis Costello was the one "with the deep voice" (although it's not him in the video), he jumped on the recording to add those low parts
The deep background vocals are actually Elvis Costello, who produced this track
Hey guys, the guys with the deep voice was Elvis Costello, who produced this track for them and is not featured in the video. You can hear his low voice near the end of the song. The 2nd singer is the actual lead singer for the group, Glenn Tilbrook. They let Paul Carrack sing on this song, and he did a fantastic job. You need to start checking out some Elvis Costello and The Attractions. Elvis is a great writer my personal favorite besides the Beatles. Squeeze is up there too.
Cool! I never knew Elvis Costello did that voice.
@@melaniesweeten5401 Yes, and if I remember correctly on the album Elvis produced one or two more songs and also sang on There's No Tomorrow. A really neat fact is on the Trust album from Elvis Costello, Glenn Tilbrook from Squeeze sings with Elvis on the song From A Whisper To A Scream. They sound great together if you haven't heard that track.
Thanks, thought George Martin or Paul
The most brilliant use of a single note in all of pop/rock music.
Paul Carrack also sang with Roxy Music, Roger Waters, Mike and the Mechanics and in his solo career in addition to with Squeeze..
Squeeze is an amazing, very underrated 80's band with a lot of diversity in their sound. "Tempted", "Cool for Cats", and Another Nail in My Heart" sound like they're from 3 different bands.
This is from the Australian music show "Rage". Note how the band were credited "U K Squeeze".
Paul Carrack has such great pipes. As said below, check him out with his first hit with Ace, "How Long", his work with Mike & The Mechanics, and solo work. He also was guest vocalist for Pink Floyd's "Hey You" when they performed The Wall live in Berlin in 1990 and did a killer job with that as well.
The lead singer is Paul Carrack..he was in a band called Ace their hit was How Long..then Squeeze then he was in Mike and the Mechanics. Great solo artist as well.
Everybody LOVES Squeeze.....more please x
When I was in college, it seemed like everyone there had Squeeze's best of album. They were much bigger in the UK, which is unfortunate for us Yanks, because many of us missed out on a bunch of great music. Such a great band
Oh, they were big on the west side of Manhattan.
this is one of the best put together songs of all time. it really is genius the way it is written. it's brilliant.
"Cool for Cats" and "Up the Junction" where both No. 2 in the UK and big sellers.
Great songs from a cool "punk"/"New Wave" group!
Remember them well growing up!
I want to speak to your comments about the lyrics. I'm a huge Squeeze fan with a lot of familiarity with their writing.
Chris Difford, who writes the lyrics for Squeeze's songs, wrote the lyrics for "Tempted" while in a taxi on his way to Heathrow Airport. Squeeze was due to tour North America. Chris began the lyrics by literally writing down everything he had packed and that he waa seeing on.this journey to the airport. The homey and familiar images are a metaphor for leaving behind the comfortable and familiar aspects of a committed relationship to begin the "unknown" of being tempted into an affair. It's such a brilliant and unusual perspective to begin with, and that's what makes Squeeze such a great band.
Squeeze has a solidly deep rabbit hole of quality. I'd probably hit up Up The Junction and Pulling Mussels From A Shell next. Probably Black Coffee In Bed, too.
Haven't heard this in a million years.
Brilliant Lead Singer Paul Carrack. Later he sings in Mike & The Mechanics. He made very good soulful Solo Albums.
and sang lead on Ace's "How Long"
@@surlechapeau yep, i forget it.
When this band's greatest hits album came out, it was weird for me because I felt like their songs were already familiar, although I'd never heard of the band before. While I wouldn't say the "Singles" album is full of radio hits, it's a quality album, virtually every song will get you singing along.
The singer is Paul Carrack, and he later sang with Mike Rutherford's (Of Genesis) band Mike And The Mechanics. They had a couple really good songs, The Living Years, and Silent Running. EXCELLENT songs!
one of my all time favorite lyrics - "your body gets much closer, I fumble for the clock, alarmed by, her seduction..." such clever writing and great use of the different lead vocals in the band at that time. Love this song!
A true classic!!! I still remember the first time I heard it on the radio. Instantly fell in love with the song.
OK, before I listen to this reaction, this is the first band I ever saw on MTV back in 1979. It wasn't this song, but I would suggest black coffee because you listened to a song called black coffee right before this reaction. The Song I was referring to is called another nail in my heart.
'Another Nail In My Heart' is another great song by Squeeze. And 'Labelled With Love'.
Ohh, I forgot about this song. I love it. Thanks for the memories. 😍
The movie, Reality Bites, revived this song in the 90’s..
They're a quirky group too. Well, this song is more mainstream than earlier stuff. Squeeze (specifically Chris Difford and Glenn Tillbrook) was being called the new Lennon and McCartney for a time there in the early 80s, and their songwriting was up to it. React to just about any other Squeeze song and you'll get even fewer views and likes than this. As Nick Lowe sang "And So it Goes". I love it. Oh yeah, the deep vocal on the recording was provided by Elvis Costello; guess they couldn't get him for the video.
Elvis Costello: Every Day I Write the Book
Pump it Up
Angels Want to Wear My Red Shoes
Nick Lowe: Cruel to Be Kind
So It Goes
Marshall Crenshaw: Someday, Some Way
There She Goes
(Marshall Crenshaw is American)
LONG LIVE POWER POP!
@@bethmiller1840 How about the SNL performance of "Radio, Radio" with Beastie Boys, after he landed in all that trouble so many decades ago by changing, unscheduled, to play that song when replacing the Sex Pistols?
ruclips.net/video/22wwbTQYKxc/видео.html
@@parissimons6385 link didn't work! I'll go look for it.
It's a song about regret at being tempted, giving in to that temptation...then getting kicked out when it's discovered. "Tempted by the fruit of another / tempted but the truth is discovered / What's been going on? Now that you've been gone / there's no other."
I’ve always loved this song, when I was young and the intro started, my friends and I would be like YEAH!!!! I still feel that way 40 years later!
I love the cameo voice appearance from Elvis Costello in this song! Squeeze is awesome.
Love, love, love Squeeze! One of the bands in that second British invasion in the '80s. Fun story: They appeared here in concert last year and the date happened to coincide with the birthday of one of my friends. He bought tickets for himself and his wife to see them. While they were having dinner at a downtown steak house before the concert, he looked over and said, "That's the guy...that's the lead singer from Squeeze over there!" He was having dinner all by himself. As they were leaving, they stopped and spoke to him, got some photos with him, and he signed a menu to wish my friend a happy birthday!
This is Glenn Tilbrook your friends met? I've had the pleasure of meeting Glenn twice and drinking and talking with him. He's warm, accessible and just a sweetheart.
One of the coolest songs ever. So smooth.
A favorite song from a favorite album of all time. A perfect dance groove, too!
You finally found Squeeze. Excellent. A great songwriting team, Difford & Tillbrook.
Good Gawd there must be half a dozen different versions of this video.
I know I've seen at least 4 different ones myself. My favorite is this one with the mops though.
You can see they spared no expense.🤣
Squeeze were fantastic. Check out 'Black Coffee In Bed', 'Cool For Cats' and 'Up The Junction'. Jools Holland, who runs a fantastic rhythm & blues orchestra and has had a long-running and much loved live music show on British TV, started out as Squeeze's keyboard player (though I think he was out of the band by the time Tempted was made).
Beautiful play, I love it!!🎶🤩🥰✨Love your reaction !! 💕💞💓💖
As someone rightly said Paul Carrick also sang Lead for the Group Ace with their hit ‘How Long’ . Paul hails from my home City of Sheffield and I have seen him a number of times including accompanying Eric Clapton at one of his Concerts.
I love Squeeze - their greatest hits album "45s and under" is one of my all time favorite albums. All of their MVs are pretty low budget and maybe a little awkward but songs are amazing. I think this song actually started the break up of the band because its one of their biggest hits commercially and a secondary singer of the group is singing lead. The lead singer was upset by that
As you probably know, Paul Carrack had hit songs with two other groups, so Glenn should not have been upset!
@@surlechapeau Tempted was different then their other hits as it was on heavy rotation on MTV (which was very popular channel in the 80s) unlike their other hit songs. Just seems Glenn was jealous tbh
@@jazzminb agreed. Glenn recruited Paul into the group, so that's on him LOL!
Good song buts it’s not in my top 10 for Squeeze. Check out Up the Junction, Another Nail in My Heart, Pulling Mussels (from a shell), Black Coffee in Bed, Cool for Cats. Great band.
@@kpodonnell7924 All of those songs are on the 45s and under album i referenced - I am very familiar
Glad you guys liked Tempted. Squeeze is a great band. I would highly encourage you to react to a lot more of their stuff. Black Coffee in Bed and Another Nail for My Heart are two that come to mind right away.
This video won the MGV “Video of the Year” award for its graphics, special effects and creative story.
I remember back in the day Burger King used this song in a commercial.... I couldn't get it out of my head for months!!!
I know this song quite well, & I like a lot of Squeeze's stuff. But, I'd never seen the video before - I'm surprised you missed their obvious visual reference to the classic 60s US Soul group, the FOUR MOPS! 🤣
I think they would really enjoy “Up the Junction”
Pretty sure the deep-voiced guy who comes in at intervals in the song's producer: Elvis Costello.
It is. You can also hear Elvis singing backups as the song starts to fade out. But it's way funnier to have Gilson Lavis and Chris Diffotd mime Elvis's singing in the video.
This song was huge when I was a teenager, it’s smooth as hell all of these years later.🔥🎧
This song is about an infidelity, that the singer committed and regrets which led to the end of his relationship.
In the beginning of the song, he is talking about moving out of the home he shared with his prior lover.
I’m so happy! Nobody reacts to Squeeze! First Yaz, now Squeeze…love it! Now you need do some Love And Rockets and more Depeche Mode!
I was having something to eat at Warwick Uni just before going in to see Steve Hughes perform and I looked across the tables at this bloke and he looked back at me and I wondered why he was looking at me for so long, it wasn't as if I was anyone famous. Then my mate said "That's Glenn Tilbrook." And I realized I'd been staring at him for a few minutes.
Yay ! I'm so glad you discovered Squeeze! Great band with a lot of songs to explore 🥰
A fun upbeat song from them "Take Me I'm Yours "
"Black Coffee ☕ in Bed 🛏 " is probably their most iconic.
Great reaction 🥰🥰🥰
Squeeze are unsung musical heroes , once you start checking their catalogue you can’t stop finding precious things … cool for cats is my fav 👍🏴
I love Squeeze! "Pulling Mussels From The Shell"
WAIT- that song was originally by squeeze??! I used to listen to a version by head automatica all the time during my emo/alt teen years in the early 2000s 😂 that’s wild I had no idea.
@@jilliansmaniotto2326 Squeeze released it in 1980 or thereabouts.
@@kestrelle5345 that’s wild. I had no idea. squeeze isn’t a band I have ever known a ton about beyond being a paul carrack fan.
I remember buying UK Squeeze (as they were known back in the 70s) album when it came out and fell in love with "Take me, I'm Yours" . Couldn't love them more as just Squeeze with LPs, Cool For Cats and Argy Bargy. Argy Bargy was a great lp, start to finish. Songs Pulling Muscles from a Shell, Another Nail in my Heart, Vicky Verky, and all just a great band and one of the best from that time. ❤️
From His Solo Career,, Paul Carrack (Lead Vocalist) "Don't Shed A Tear"
This was on very heavy rotation in the early days of MTV.
Another Nail in my Heart is a great song by the Squeeze. Pulling Mussels (From A Shell) and Cool For Cats...also great.
I always thought that the bit about getting dressed and packing his suitcase is basically him preparing for a weekend getaway with the temptress. That's how they relate to being tempted. On his way out, he has a sense of guilt as he sees the church and the carousel where he spends time with his family. The memories call to him, but he knows he'll forget them once he gets to his booty call.
Love these guys. Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook; excellent songwriters and purveyors of the 'blue eyed soul.' Great track from an LP produced by Elvis Costello. You may want to check out 'Black Coffee in Bed,' or 'Hourglass.'
Such a good song.
Squeeze is such a fun band! Definitely listen to Pulling Mussels or Black Coffee!
Impossible to be in a bad mood when this song plays. Makes me want to dance
Squeeze is very very very underrated. I have enjoyed there tunes back in the 90’s.
Tempted is my personal favorite. There are more Squeeze songs I like.”You need to hear “Black Coffee in Bed” Glenn Tilbrook’s vocals on that track is awesome. ❤❤❤
Squeeze was good. This was one of their best songs.
Squeeze are a great Band, however Paul Carrick the lead Singer went on to very successful solo career and also was lead Singer in Mike and Mechanics.
and sang lead on Ace's "How Long"
Glad we got this one. It just has it's own special feel somehow. Smooth.
Instant zoom back to MTV
🤣🤣🤣 Mannnnnnn I forgot about this. I feel like I should be shopping in a Kroger’s back in the 80’s any time I hear it. 🤣🤣🤣 Them good old days when grocery stores had kitty litter filled ashtrays at the end of the isles 🤣😂🤣
🤣
What a GREAT band they were. Please check out some of their 80's tunes , they have many many great pop songs. Another classic UK band.
This song is typical Squeeze at their very best. Most of their songs follow a formula: boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, girl dumps boy, boy can't move on. Here, the singer is depressed because the woman he loves left him, he's interested in another woman, but he can't allow himself to act upon the temptation because he is still in love with the woman who dumped him. Their songs are exceedingly clever and require one to pay close attention to the lyrics. In my opinion, they were the best song writing duo (Difford and Tilbrook) since Lennon and McCartney.
You need to do more Squeeze such a great band, up the junction is a great tune
Somehow an almost forgotten band. Critics loved them- many great songs. Glad you gave Squeeze a try. Other good ones are Black Coffee in Bed, Goodbye Girl, Pulling Mussell from a Shell, If I Didn't Love you, His House Her Home, Wrong Side of the Moon, Is That Love?, many more
Ha! Up to this minute I thought this was a Hall and Oates song.
The singer is Paul carrack, he also sang for mike and the mechanics may he RIP
He's not dead.
Paul Carrack is still very much alive and still performing. I think you're thinking of the other "Paul" that sang lead with Mike and the Mechanics, Paul Young. He passed in July of 2000 of a heart attack.
My bad I thought he’d passed away thanks👍
Pulling mussels from a shell , is a great song.
Aloha guys, 1st Black Coffee, REM, now a little Squeeze, great start to my day...Mahalo...a hui hou
Great music great live band
Love the reaction...lol. Squeeze is an actual band. They are goofing around in the video. But there's another version of the video where they are playing their instruments.....
Difford and Tilbrook are up there with Lennon and McCartney and Elton John and Bernie Taupin as great British songwriters Glen Tillbrook was the normal lead singer for the band and the guys doing the backing are most normally playing instruments
One of my favorite bands please play "Up the Junction" a brilliant love song about love and lost😓
Up the Junction is an incredible song
Why they played this song before " Up the Junction " blows my mind.
The singer Paul Carrack is great with the band, Mike and the Mechanics from which Mike came from Genesis with Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel. Their song "In the Living Years" is absolutely beautiful and shows the beauty of Paul`s voice. You should check it out because it is one of the great songs of a lifetime.
Mr. Carrack, sir, you truly have one of the greatest voices in the business.
My favourite Squeeze song and video is "Cool For Cats"
Great reaction. Definitely more Squeeze please. Thanks
My introduction to this band was in the late 80s Isla Vista, in college. Their compilation album "45's and Under" was in everyone's CD collection.
I confess,I was totally into this band in the 80s.
You MUST TRY "Pulling mussels (from the shell)". Beautiful classic from this band.
"Quartet" was the word you were looking for there. Classic song.
Think you mean quintet.
@@TZ61 No, I meant what I wrote. Brad said "a trio?" then Lex said "or a quad...rupe?" to which Brad interjected "four people?" Four people is a quartet. A quintet is five people.
@@nethrelm lol
Y'all always make me smile. Thanks. Great reaction, as always. Hope all is well.
What a great song, thanks for the reaction. 👍
I think you will enjoy Up The Junction, Labelled With Love, and so many other Squeeze songs.
They are hamming it up for this video. Elvis Costello, who produced this album, did the lower bass line vocals.
This is a great, underrated band, "Black Coffe in Bed" "Pulling Mussels from the Shell".
Everyone loves Paul Carrack.
For good reason. Paul could sing the phone book and male it sound amazing.
Love this song. Great vocals by Paul Carrack. Check out his solo song Don't Shed a Tear.
Awww man, I missed this on live chat. Glad Squeeze finally gets some love.
