Wow. 9 years later and this is still how hopper clocks look. Not many tutorials have that longevity. Nicely done, speaks to the simplicity and effectiveness of the device.
That's what I thought at first, but sadly it's not so simple. I've tried many different methods for trying to introduce 2 settable repeaters into the timer with no success. Adjusting the delays can get you different timer lengths and pulse lengths, but you can't control it by tick.
This timer revolutionized minecraft redstone. I can;t believe there are less than 700,000 views on this 5 year old video. Also, you can really tell the difference in Etho's microphone in this video after watching so many newer ones!

Etho, this video is incredible! I really appreciate the time and effort you put into calculating time-item ratios and showing us how redstone timing translates to standard increments. Thanks for all you do for your subscribers and for the minecraft community.
This is awesome, I was having so much trouble putting a slow enough clock on my automatic chicken farm/cooker, I knew I should have checked Etho's tutorials first. Thanks so much!
9 years later. Wow. This is exactly what I needed I’m using it on bedrock. I’m sure you Java players have something crazy simple nowadays but man this is great!
There are easy vanilla ways to load chunks. Spawn chunks are always loaded, so build in the spawn area. A dropper firing items into a nether portal loads the chunks for about a minute, so if you have a clock firing items in every 40 seconds or so it'll load the area. There are numerous other ways with hoppers and such. If this is in a singleplayer world, it won't work unless you leave the game running. On a multiplayer server it will work, but may cause lag for others (depends on how good the server is and what is keeping loaded)
PieMations There are now several mods actually to keep chunks loaded I unfortunately can't think of any off the top of my head but look up Admin Chuck Loader block, Personal Chuck Loader block and unfortunately I can't think of another item form it, if you just look those items up in google you should be able to find the mod or even other mods. Infact looking up Admin Chuckloader Tools might work too I hope this helps Nea
I needed a 3 minutes timer for a arena that I am building. Your silent timer worked like a charm when I placed 64+64+64+34 sugar canes on it. :) Thank you so much for the time you saved me. My arena is one step closer to be completed! :D
Definitely one of the most influential creations in Minecraft history, can't believe this video hasn't even reached a million views, it definitely deserves for the sheer innovation of it.
How is it possible I wasn't subscribed to Etho! Seems apropos that I realize it when looking for a refresher on hopper clocks and stumble upon this historic video.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The timings of hoppers have changed since the making of this video. A hopper now transfers items sideways with a rate of 2.5 items per second, which equals 4 redstone ticks, so instead of calculating with 3.5 / 7 in the formula, instead calculate with 4 and 8. It took me so long until I figured out why my timings weren't working like they were supposed to >.< Hopefully this comment will save other people from encountering the same problem.
This is why I subbed to Etho (besides the very entertaining game play), he gets into the nitty-gritty game mechanics, and then takes it to the next level. Etho's ever lasting drive for efficiency, combined with his imagination, problem solving skills, and his deep understanding of game mechanics, creates awe inspiring pieces of art. I cringe 80% of the time when I watch other minecrafters because of their lack of understanding/ignorance of game mechanics.
It’s funny you say that, because one of my kid sisters saw her first Etho video recently, and said, “What in the 2012 Minecraft is this?!” So, it probably is of its time and not terribly modern. 🤷♀️
This is indeed true. The sticky piston pulls back the block, and generates a block update on the other sticky piston so that it can push forward. Regular pistons don't pull back the blocks thus do not generate any block update for the other piston.
It'd be easier for you just to put redstone dust with two 2tick repeaters in a circle, because trapping people only requires a clock with a small delay.
Very good invention, Etho! It fills the big gap between the repeater delays (after 10-20 seconds they get really expensive and need a lot of space) and the item despawning delays (n*5) minutes. I will use this a lot!
this is so awesome! you could use this for a mob arena to time the space between spawns and put a hopper beneath and after every wave you could make it pull out one piece to make the next wave sooner!

LordXarti I'm sorry but I don't understand what you mean here, in 1.8 you can place signs on top of signs by holding the shift key. You could never send a signal through a block without repeaters to my knowledge.
