There's nothing wrong with admitting that Jeff Porcaro has had a profound influence on drummers even beyond his passing. So many have expressed an appreciation for his dedication, professionalism and passion for his craft. He was a husband, a father and a brother first, but his contributions to music will never be forgotten.
@silversurfer647 The coroner ruled out an accident (due to him accidentally inhaling insecticide while he was spraying his yard) but in the end determined he had a heart attack due to occlusive coronary artery disease caused by atherosclerosis resulting from cocaine use 😓❤️🩹. I never would've pictured him using in the first place.. especially because he had just had his 3rd son just a yr prior. It broke my heart when I learned about it many yrs ago😭💔. He was the GOAT imo..
That's the difference between a band and today's music. These guys were fantastic, the bass , the drums , lead guitar, piano all came together vocals too.

Love the passion and energy (the late) Jeff Porcaro put into his work. Here is part of his amazing CV - Porcaro began playing drums at the age of seven. Lessons came from his father Joe Porcaro, followed by further studies with Bob Zimmitti and Richie Lepore. When he was seventeen, he got his first professional gig playing in Sonny & Cher's touring band. He later called Jim Keltner and Jim Gordon his idols at that time.[6] During his twenties, Porcaro played on hundreds of albums,[7] including several for Steely Dan. He toured with Boz Scaggs before co-founding Toto with his brother Steve and childhood friends Steve Lukather and David Paich. Jeff Porcaro is renowned among drummers for the drum pattern he used on the Grammy Award-winning Toto song "Rosanna", from the album Toto IV.[8] The drum pattern, called the Half-Time Shuffle Groove, was originally created by drummer Bernard Purdie, who called it the "Purdie Shuffle." Porcaro created his own version of this groove by blending the aforementioned shuffle with John Bonham's groove heard in the Led Zeppelin song "Fool in the Rain", while keeping a Bo Diddley beat on the bass drum. Porcaro describes this groove in detail on a Star Licks video (now DVD) he created shortly after "Rosanna" became popular.[citation needed] Besides his work with Toto, he was also a highly sought session musician. Porcaro collaborated with many of the biggest names in music, including George Benson, Nik Kershaw, Tommy Bolin, Larry Carlton, Eric Carmen, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Christopher Cross, Andrew Gold, Miles Davis, Dire Straits, Donald Fagen, Stan Getz, David Gilmour, James Newton Howard, Al Jarreau, Elton John, Leo Sayer, Greg Lake, Rickie Lee Jones, Paul McCartney, Michael McDonald, the Bee Gees, Lynn Anderson, Sérgio Mendes, Jim Messina, Pink Floyd, Lee Ritenour, Diana Ross, Boz Scaggs, Hoyt Axton, Seals and Crofts, Bruce Springsteen, Steely Dan, Barbra Streisand, Richard Marx, Warren Zevon, Don Henley, David Foster, Donna Summer, Frankie Valli and Joe Walsh. Porcaro contributed drums to four tracks on Michael Jackson's Thriller and also played on the Dangerous album hit "Heal the World". He also played on 10cc's ...Meanwhile (1992). Porcaro featured on Al Stewart's 1980 album 24 Carrots. On the 1993 10cc Alive album, recorded after his death, the band dedicated "The Stars Didn't Show" to him.[citation needed] Richard Marx dedicated the song "One Man" to him and said Porcaro was the best drummer he had ever worked with.[9] Michael Jackson made a dedication to Porcaro in the liner notes for his 1995 album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. RIP Jeff.

You will never find a band with so many talented voices who can easily sing lead vocals and that same talent delivers accompanying instrument performances that make TOTO simply the best.
yeah, gotta love Toto...and many more bands / artists in that era. in my opinion, Slash from Guns & Roses could be up there right next to Toto in regards to guitar player :) Aerosmith, Queen, Bon Jovi,.......what decades to remember...glad I was there to see it all :D
the look on the Porcaro brothers' faces while playing their respective instruments along with the usual showmanship of Joseph Williams are my favorites in this video...
Why nobody talks about the vocal? His voice hits high notes effortlessly, and very clean. Yes, drummer is great, but I don’t think Toto became so popular without its talented vocalist.
actually the vocalist in this video (Joseph Williams) is toto's 3rd vocalist. the one who really peaked with toto in the late 70s and early 80s was Bobby Kimball. he's the vocalist you find in their hit songs Africa, Rosanna, and Hold the Line. that being said, both of them are extremely talented.
I really love his voice. It's Amazing and perfect mach TOTO's songs. His voice and singing style is great. TOTO wouldn't success without him. I love joseph so much from Japan💓🔥
Wowwwwww. Man Anyone born in 70,80’s you guys live in the most amazing era in music. All we can do it’s pass it on to our kids. My son it’s 8 y and he loves the 80’s.
I was born in the late 60's, so my entire foundation in music is based on late 60's through 1990, when the industry took a dramatic change downwards. It's easy to attribute the "music was better when I was a kid" to aging nostalgia, but there have actually been informal studies made on the quantifiable difference in the quality of music in this era, to that of post-1990...so it's not just me aging, it's an objective observation. There's too much profit margin now in computer/sequenced synthesized sound with auto-tuned sex-sells for the industry to even consider people who have honed their craft and composition creativity; they're just too expensive and too rare. The industry can use marketing instead to sell the noise pollution of today, and the marketing works like a charm. But everyone loses out on quality in the process.
La mejor banda de la historia…cómo suena esa guitarra, Jeff Porcaro en la bateria, el bajo, los teclados, la voz… todo tan perfectamente espectacular…!! Voy a seguir escuchado esta música por siempre. 🥰
@@scottscage6409 Drummer Jeff Porcaro worked in his garden with plant plague in 1992. He smoked cigarettes as usual. This interaction with the plant toxins and the cigarette smoke had poisoned him.
I use this song to calm down my son. When he's upset I always play this song and he gets quiet and shortly after smiles. That's the first song he ever listened to. He's nearly 2 and is the love of my life. And Toto is just there with the two of us to make our lives better. He was crying and now is giggling. Thanks Toto. Thanks music. I can't stop loving you, my son.
@@colepatterson8205 Exactly. As long as it took them to induct Rush, who the F cares what those idiots at the HOF think. People will still be playing songs like this way after some of the jokes they have inducted. That's the true test of greatness.
Its because Toto wouldnt succumb to the whims of the non-musical cohort of the industry (radio, A&R execs, media, journalists and so forth). Im pretty sure there were some contractual obligations that got in the way of them being what they wanted to be, and a few other things that are not public. But my take on it is they wouldnt bend over, so they got shunned as a band. Which is interesting because individually and collectively they were involved with some of the biggest songs in musical history. Everybody wanted to work with them. Steve Lukather worked with Quincy, MJ, Lionel Richie, and so many others. Jeff worked with MJ, Quincy, Aretha, Paul Mcartney, and so many others, Paich, worked on so many other projects, it showed that the musicicians and producers recognised their ability and contribution, that everybody wanted them, even if the media didnt. Its a such a shame as while Africa and Rosanna are huge global hits, some of the songs on this album are as equally as good, and so many others since then. I firmly believe they would have achieved world domination as a group if their music got the appropriate airplay in the USA, like they did i Europe and Japan. I love Toto!! They are the very best, and every musician that has been a part of the band are amongst the very best in their field. And the new incarnation fot eh band (2021) with X, Sput, Ham, et al, take things to a new level. Long live Toto, and RIP Jeff, Mike and Ferdie
Joe Williams is a one-of-a-kind singer. The way he punches the “cries her name” line at 2:09 is just amazing. Also, some of you might not know this, but he is the son of movie composer John Williams.
I haven't heard this song in probably 25 years or more and found it in here last night. OMG the memories that came flooding back, it's a crackin song. One of my all time favourites xx
A deep respect to 80's band. If you look at the comments board, how we 80's music lover people have still kept a lots of love for them. We never forget that golden age of music.

Used to be a little girl when Toto was a successful band back in the 80's. Now I'm 40 and have rediscovered the magic, the lyrics the perfect playing of each instrument and the great voices of Joseph Williams and Steve Lukater. The best band ever. Xoxo From Panamá city Panama
This is my first time hearing and seeing this MTV and omg, I can't stop loving the drummer. I love how he was smiling and enjoying what he was doing ♥♥♥ So sorry to know he was gone too soon.
Africa has a majority vote for best Toto song but IMO this is their best song. So many different elements to this masterpiece and not many have had a chance to hear it!
I wish I would have written something this beautiful and timeless. Extraordinary songwriting and vocal harmonies with superb video production. Inspiring.
THIS...THIS is a group of TOTALLY CONSUMMATE PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS who just kill it when ever they play their music. Sadly two of these wonderful band members (Jeff and his brother Mike) are no longer with us, but their quality music will last forever. I've always loved it when a music group was full of absolute killers (this was, and still is a very-very rare thing to find in a group), but that is what has always made me love, and made many of my friends hate Toto. Many of my friends would say, "their just a group of studio musicians" while I would (and STILL say) do you have any idea how good you have to be, to in your words be "a studio musician".... you have to be a REAL....REAL MUSICIAN to be the one that the industry calls to get it right.....to absolutely nail it....this is not a bad thing, this was/is a badge of honor.....and of course they would just say...."what ever Wes"......any way, I absolutely loved, and still love these guys. I give props to (in my opinion) one of THE greatest groups ever.
@@brennanbuglioni2821 Hey Brennan, I love my friends growing up, but as I told them then...you guys are wrong on this one. But it's cool, different strokes for different folks I guess. I still see the guys (rarely...those of us who are still around) every now and again, and everyone still has their own opinion, and this is cool, that's what makes the world go around...I guess.. 🙂🤓
Yeah, to tell you the truth I just discovered Toto recently. I am a 90's kid and teenager, and for so many years I knew and loved their songs, but never knew the band. So I never respected them as much as I did now.. What a fool

Toto are the best band in the world and Joseph Williams is a man with a clear, flowing, perfect voice. I said the video is terrible, but I completely changed my mind. It happened to me. I smashed a whole bunch of things last week in my room and fell on the floor just like he does. Really sad. Love can be a very painful thing and I'm suffering a broken heart now. To the ones I left behind and forgot until the memories came back I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU!

@@joeykong94 They’ve had many different singers. Bobby Kimball was the singer from 1978 to early 1984. Fergie Fredriksen was the singer in 1984 and 1985. Joseph Williams was the singer from 1986-1988. Bobby came back for a brief reunion in 1989, The song Goin’ Home was recorded that time, it can be found on the Toto XX album. He fully returned in 1999, and sang with them up until 2007. Jean-Michel Byron was their singer in 1990. After Byron was fired Steve Lukather sang everything on the studio albums and live. They did also have background singers that sang lead sometimes, if it was a higher vocal. Joseph was fired early in 1988, but returned later in the 2010’s. He still sings with the band to this day.
Because people hang on to assumptions rather than listening with their own ears and processing this vocal perfection.
Because Toto has never been about the vocals unfortunately
Yes thats true
I really love his voice.
It's Amazing and perfect mach TOTO's songs.
His voice and singing style is great.
TOTO wouldn't success without him.
I love joseph so much from Japan💓🔥
This has arguably one of the best melodies ever written for all of pop/rock music. It's a masterful song. Brilliant stuff.
Joseph Williams just the greatest!
Agreed 100%!!
Wowwwwww. Man
Anyone born in 70,80’s you guys live in the most amazing era in music.

Today's groups in 2024 can't hold a candle to these guys!!! Music nowadays is absolute garbage!! Loved the 80's!!!

Wowww, que hermoso lo que sucede con tu hijo, primero la canción y luego este comentario, me han emocionado. ¡GRACIAS!!!
he punishes that cymbal at 4:15... absolutely beats the devil out of it
Best groove drummer ever. My god, Toto is so damn versatile.
Makes you realize just how good Simon Phillips was when he sadly had to replace him
Jeff is a legend.

How these guys haven’t gotten into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame yet baffles me. They were and still are incredible.
GOAT
Honestly the rock hall is a sham anyway but Toto is too good for the rock hall
They are far too good for that RRHOF nonsense
Everlasting song
Joe Williams is a one-of-a-kind singer. The way he punches the “cries her name” line at 2:09 is just amazing.
Also, some of you might not know this, but he is the son of movie composer John Williams.

Such a talented band. I only wish they were still here. I’m a vocalist and 40 percent of my bands set is 80’s music and a lot of Toto. I’m 54 now.
The Porcaro brothers are insanely in sync. That pocket!
Just think about all the past relationships created out of this absolutely nostalgic song.
Whoever wrote this song is a genius. ❤
BEST VOCALISTS, COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS IN ONE BAND! I was still very young when I heard this band and I loved them immediately!
The weird thing is that as a band they only sold about 40 million records, but, they were some of the most well known sessions musicians of all time.
Simply a masterpiece...you just cannot stop dreaming. What an incredible band...thanks TOTO!🙏🏻🎶

No wonder that big parts of the music press/critics hated TOTO at this time - the guys were too close being perfect at each ones skills. Awesome.
Africa has a majority vote for best Toto song but IMO this is their best song. So many different elements to this masterpiece and not many have had a chance to hear it!
It's so crazy that the studio execs didn't release this song as a single in the US...

This song is timeless... such a good tune. I really like this era of Toto.

Yes, TOTO is “TOTOLLY” great music for all times from the glorious 80-s!

Yeah, to tell you the truth I just discovered Toto recently. I am a 90's kid and teenager, and for so many years I knew and loved their songs, but never knew the band. So I never respected them as much as I did now.. What a fool

"Stop Loving You"
Reflections in my mind
Thoughts I can't define
My heart is racing and the night goes on
I can almost hear a laugh
Coming from your photograph
Funny how a look can share a thousand meanings
Well-intended lies
Contemplating alibis
Is it really you or is it me I'm blaming?
A distant memory
Flashes over me
Even though you're gone I feel you deep inside
Dance beneath the light with that look in your eyes
I can't stop loving you
Time passes quickly and chances are few
I won't stop 'til I'm through loving you girl
There's a window in the heart
I've tried to look through from the start
You're never really sure what someone else is thinking
Someone's broken something new
Another altered point of view
Just a certain someone's conscience playing
I held it in my hand
I did not understand
What lives inside the wind that cries her name
Trying to catch a shooting star
What seems so close can't be that far
I'm living in a dream that's never ending
Dance beneath the light with that look in your eyes
I can't stop loving you
Time passes quickly and chances are few
I won't stop 'til I'm through loving you girl
Dancing with that look that's in your eyes
I can't stop loving you
Time passes quickly and chances are few
I won't stop 'til I'm through loving you girl
I can't stop loving you
Time passes quickly and chances are few
I won't stop 'til I'm through loving you

Toto are the best band in the world and Joseph Williams is a man with a clear, flowing, perfect voice. I said the video is terrible, but I completely changed my mind. It happened to me. I smashed a whole bunch of things last week in my room and fell on the floor just like he does. Really sad. Love can be a very painful thing and I'm suffering a broken heart now. He fully returned in 1999, and sang with them up until 2007. Jean-Michel Byron was their singer in 1990. After Byron was fired Steve Lukather sang everything on the studio albums and live.
