I made my first 4 sales on a Cat wordsearch book that I made off of one of your other videos. Thank you for the info. I ended up making good use of Canva and Bookbolt and I went over the top cute with puns and I made the cover image cat wearing glasses 💖 I called it a feline word search adventure. I was too proud of myself when I got those first few sales 😆 No sales on the coloring books yet but I’m super happy with the Kawaii Lovecraft Monsters one I made. I’m probably going to scrap the first coloring book that I don’t like as much as that one, then redo and republish with a slightly different name though. 🍀

For midjourney when doing a negative prompt its --no(dash dash no) and then whatever you want midjourny to exclude. so for your example it would be --no shading , I also found putting black and white at the beginning helped. So something like this "black and white coloring page for kids, cute Halloween scene, cartoon style, thick lines, low detail --no shading --ar 85:110"

Wow thanks. That cover and coloring pages look great. I did find out recently too that coloring pages can be edited in Canva to adjust for things like too much grayscale in the image. You go into edit photo, adjust and adjust the contrast and brightness. I did test it out and it does work and makes a huge difference. You can do the same in Book Bolt I do believe. Thanks for the video I have been having a hard time with prompts for coloring pages and book covers so this helps.
Just tried to make a Halloween cover in Midjourney but all of them were full of five legged cats, cats with batwing ears, cats with fishtails, pumpkins with windows, moons with pumpkins stalks etc. Not one was usable. Back to the drawing board...
Do you buy your own barcodes or use the free Amazon ones? As I always wondered how people did financially with using the Amazon barcodes when they had a pretty successful book. Great tutorial by the way.
I watched this video 4 months ago (and all the others before this one), I followed the whole setup, created 12 coloring books, did not do any advertisement/marketing, I apparently sold 5 books as of right now (28 November 2023). I have no doubt that there is space for improvement somewhere, although I'm not sure if it will be something capable of "passive income" or even pay some bills. I think I'll have to learn more and dedicate a bit more of my time to understand the Amazon KDP ecosystem so that I can understand why it's not working for me. I'm sure others may have different outcomes.
Do you need to make a note that there is blank pages within your coloring books so ppl purchasing them know? (All coloring books I get for our kids, if they say 80pages+, there are designs side by side and front to back. I personally wouldn’t be happy purchasing an 80 page coloring books and not knowing that majority of it is blank pages.)

Can I just please quickly ask, so basically the covers we are using the 17.34 inch x 11.25 inch size, then coming into the colouring pages, they will still be 8.625 inch x 11.25 inch, using a colouring page then a blank page until the end? Thank you!
Hi Paul! I Have a question, please. When you upload the coloring page to canva you don't use the KDP Interior Margin Template, and you fill all the page. When I try to do the same thing with my bleed coloring book and upload it on KDP I get the email rejection from Amazon. So I'm confused about when to use your KDP Interior template and when not?
So i published some colouring books with a black background, and used a black pen in Canva to rub out unwanted specs and dots generated by Midjourney. Both the background and the pen are 000000 shade black. This doesn't show up on canva as they are the same colour and it doesn't show up in KDP manuscript preview, but for some reason my book has been printed where you can see black pen scribbles over the black background. Why is this? Someone please help me fix it. I can't find the answer anywhere.
Did you select the 'Flatten PDF' option when you came to download it as a PDF Print file? If not, it may be worth try doing that and re-uploading the new cover.

Another problem is the email that KDP sends me asking me to add the bleed, but when I do that, I get another error saying that I sent a larger file than I chose when I created the book. "Add 0.125" (3.2 mm) to your book's page width and 0.25" (6.4 mm) to the page height to ensure that the images in your manuscript extend beyond the edge of the page. Once you have added the size, extend any images or backgrounds that you want to reach all the way to the edge of the page 0.125” (3.2 mm) beyond the trim line. This prevents manufacturing issues when the file is trimmed to size" I don't know where I'm going wrong

Why do you think it will lead to an account ban? It will depend on what images you're publishing but I've not heard of bans occurring just becasue AI images were used.
Hey Paul, so I followed your video to the letter and got a message from KDP when trying to publish my first book with bleed, that I needed to increase the size by .125 and .25 respectively, went back and checked my pages are 8.625x11.25 so not sure why they are telling me I need to add more height and width?
When I pull my images into canva they don't drag from top left to right. They go over and I have to pull them down in the middle and then move back the right edge. I followed the directions correctly so I'm not sure why this is happening. How can I fix it?

Your videos are great Paul. I think I'm going to go back and watch your old ones. I have become quite dissolution with AI. Not just my own results but the whole mess. I downloaded more than 10 packets of coloring book pages. Each one included over 100 pictures. As I went through the pictures I realized that each packet was very similar. Then as I looked closer, I could see the bizarre imperfections. Especially with the "cute animals". Several had an extra limb. Do these people not check the pictures? I can only imagine a kid coloring those. Then the Halloween packets are even more bizarre. Many just made my head hurt looking at them. Always check the hands. Not to mention bits and pieces floating around that are not quite birds or leaves on the plants with eyes.... A lot of pictures just would never make sense when you are trying to color them. Places where the picture kind of melts.... They just do not work. The video you did on the vintage car on a bridge... They look good at 10,000 feet but on closer inspection things just aren't right. Sorry for the rant but after several months of mucking about with AI I think I've had it. I did sell a couple of journals and will continue to use AI to generate ideas and even some verbiage, but I'm really going to scrutinize anything that I use in a coloring book. Sorry about the rant but I really got frustrated inspecting more than 1000 coloring book pictures today.... And keep up the good work.
Great video, just one probelm, I put in the --ar 85:110 --v5- but it gives me square copies so when I download and put in Canva I loose part of the image if i fill the page, or for coorect size I have to leave a white border above and below the page. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks
Unlucky for me, my KDP account has been permanently terminated after I tried to do some product following the videos guidelines. They keep coming back for requests to change it and boom. 3rd time perma ban. No chance for further alteration. Even so I enjoyed creating them. Too bad I have been banned for life from KDP platform.

Hi Paul! Really appreciate your KDP videos as I’ve been watching them for a while now. After see this, I thought I’d give it a try and do a coloring book. One question I have though is do customers expect a coloring page in the book of the exact cover art?
It doesn’t have to be exactly the same. The easiest way is to grab similar pictures from mid journey that have the same prompt apart from the black and white/colour parts. Otherwise, you either convert a colour one to b&w for the interior, or edit a black and white one to colour it. I was doing the latter recently before I realised I didn’t need to do all that work.

I'm not sure why that would be. I just hit the share button and then select pdf from the drop down menu. If that is not working then maybe contact Canva support.

KPD you do not need to but a barcode, KDP will do it.

I don't know where I'm going wrong
Any images that are outside the margin that you don;t mind getting clipped need to go beyond the edges of the page.

Hello. I followed your same prompt but for my niche. Any thoughts on why my pages seem to have an aspect ratio issue. They don't fit the page properly for an 8.5 x 11. Anything I can do to fix the size? Thanks for everything.

Your videos are great Paul. I think I'm going to go back and watch your old ones. I have become quite dissolution with AI. Not just my own results but the whole mess. I downloaded more than 10 packets of coloring book pages. Each one included over 100 pictures. As I went through the pictures I realized that each packet was very similar. Then as I looked closer, I could see the bizarre imperfections. Especially with the "cute animals". Several had an extra limb. Do these people not check the pictures? I can only imagine a kid coloring those. Then the Halloween packets are even more bizarre. Many just made my head hurt looking at them. Always check the hands. Not to mention bits and pieces floating around that are not quite birds or leaves on the plants with eyes.... A lot of pictures just would never make sense when you are trying to color them. Places where the picture kind of melts.... They just do not work.
The video you did on the vintage car on a bridge... They look good at 10,000 feet but on closer inspection things just aren't right. Sorry for the rant but after several months of mucking about with AI I think I've had it. I did sell a couple of journals and will continue to use AI to generate ideas and even some verbiage, but I'm really going to scrutinize anything that I use in a coloring book.
Sorry about the rant but I really got frustrated inspecting more than 1000 coloring book pictures today.... And keep up the good work.
Great video, just one probelm, I put in the --ar 85:110 --v5- but it gives me square copies so when I download and put in Canva I loose part of the image if i fill the page, or for coorect size I have to leave a white border above and below the page. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks

Unlucky for me, my KDP account has been permanently terminated after I tried to do some product following the videos guidelines. They keep coming back for requests to change it and boom. 3rd time perma ban. No chance for further alteration. Even so I enjoyed creating them. Too bad I have been banned for life from KDP platform.

So bite me. Too bad because I had a Children's book illustrated which I wrote and I paid for after work, ready for publication.

Hi, whay when I do my cover page in Canva... when I try to save as PDF and download the file i takes for ages and freeze ? Also after use Vectorize AI tells me canva that my file is not compatible or corrupted ?? Thanks
I have the same issue, the svg file is too big after Vectozier.IA. The maximum svg file size supported by canva is 3Mo
How to calculate total all pages? inclde with the blank page or just only coloring page??

Hi Paul! Really appreciate your KDP videos as I’ve been watching them for a while now. After see this, I thought I’d give it a try and do a coloring book. One question I have though is do customers expect a coloring page in the book of the exact cover art?
Seems like it'll be safer to keep art similar in style in case the buyers aren't happy & you get negative ratings.
It doesn’t have to be exactly the same. The easiest way is to grab similar pictures from mid journey that have the same prompt apart from the black and white/colour parts.
Otherwise, you either convert a colour one to b&w for the interior, or edit a black and white one to colour it. I was doing the latter recently before I realised I didn’t need to do all that work.

We checked your files and found issues you need to fix before your book can be published on KDP:
Interior
Add 0.125" (3.2 mm) to your book's page width and 0.25" (6.4 mm) to the page height to ensure that the images in your manuscript extend beyond the edge of the page. Once you have added the size, extend any images or backgrounds that you want to reach all the way to the edge of the page 0.125” (3.2 mm) beyond the trim line. This prevents manufacturing issues when the file is trimmed to size. See examples PDF page(s) 63. Watch our video, which explains trim size, margins, and bleed.
Where possible, we give pages numbers with examples. To make sure your entire book meets our guidelines, please review your entire manuscript file and fix all issues.

No, I don't. But there are ways to keep consistent elements. My advice would be to search on RUclips for videos that will show you how.

paul, hi your videos are. great and i got into the course with kathryne on your link. i create all my images in midjourney and use --ar 85:110 for them and when i uoload them to crystal theyre 1024 x 1024. whatam i doing wrong? its so frustrating and is taking weeks. thx
I don't know. If you're using --ar 85:110 it should create them in the correct ratio. Do they look square in MidJourney?
i got an answer from Isaac and he looked at my screenshot and saw i had a space in between --- and ar. i created alot of images and it was a learning experience for sure. it defaults to square. thanks@@paulmarles

No I haven't. The template should be completely covered by your background image.

I was also going to ask same question how did you manage to upload svg into Canva without compressing it first? Everytime I try upload any Svg file to Canva it rejects it

I'm not sure why that would be. I just hit the share button and then select pdf from the drop down menu. If that is not working then maybe contact Canva support.
why don't you vectorize the interior? it's the same paper size as the cover...seems like you want them 300dpi
