      Struggling to create a book that isn’t rejected due to something called bleed. I tried 3 times. How wide do you have to make the design so it’s not rejected. I’m tired of starting over and getting told to stretch the cover for bleed and I stayed inside the red and then outside the red border……HELP

    From what I know about Canva and speaking to their customer support, you actually cannot use their images and sell them as-is. You have to change it into your own design in some way by merging elements etc in order to resell.

    • @shawnorrific
      @shawnorrific 2 года назад +75

      Came here to say this! You have to create your own composition with custom art or multiple element pieces from their library.

    • @MinReiSakato

      You can't take ONE image and sell it as is. Making a composition is different

    • @SalleyneDesign
      @SalleyneDesign 2 года назад +35

      @@motherofnerdlings Correct. But in this video compositions weren’t created lol. A composition would have been multiple images and/or elements PER page of the book. U can’t put 1 unaltered image per page like that. Canva is pretty picky with their rules believe it or not. I went back and forth with them for specific answers, and trust me, even when you use the images/elements, they have to be combined into a new design.

    • @SalleyneDesign
      @SalleyneDesign 2 года назад +32

      @@MinReiSakato as long as it’s more than 1 element. Even taking 1 element and just changing the colors is not considered a new design to Canva support. So if u take multiple elements and/or images and combine them into a new design, then you’re good.

    I did my first couple of low and medium content books and I have to point out, the thing with the pink frame (not allowed to get there) is wrong. I thought that first, too, stayed within the pink frame and ended up having my first sample print of a notebook with a pink frame around! So, yes, get to the OUTSIDE lines of the pink frame on the template. If I could post a photo I could prove it to you. Talking about the cover here.

      You simply needed to delete the pink frame after you were done using it as a guide.
      Anything you left visible will print.
      I don't understand why you think his example in the video of using the pink guide was wrong, because you did not delete it when you were done with it, and you uploaded it to Amazon KDP along with your book file.
      That is obviously why the book printed with the pink guides.

    Great video, lots of good valuable actionable content, thanks! 😀 However, there is one thing I need to highlight/mention/clarify/correct. At the 9.55 minute mark in the video you speak of royalty rates. 70% and 35%, based on the selling price. This is correct BUT only applies to ebooks, not print books. Print books pay 60%, no matter what the retail price. And since the example you are showing is a coloring book (which cannot be published as an ebook), I think it's important new publishers know this, otherwise, they may be unnecessarily pricing their book at $9.99 or under in the false premise they are getting a higher royalty.

    As an artist and a book creator all my own created images are owned solely by me and thats copyright ownership. If somebody on kdp rips off my images for their 7 minute book creations I would raise hell with Amazon & KDP and they would probably lose their account. I had an image I created digitally on another online selling site and it was pulled off because of the title and the image I created related to a company's product. I also got a cease and desist email from the company itself. So copyrights carry weight. You shouldn't encourage people to ripoff others artwork. Even if somebody downloads and tries to use as their's a piece of line art they need to alter it significantly to defend it as their own creation in order to resell it. Plagarism is also a copyright infringement.

    The majority of KDP upload tutorials feature just two main themes . . . "Make money/live the life you want" - and/or - "Low/medium content books."
    Try searching for KDP toturials/demos etc. featuring HIGH content books (novels, poetry, scripts, non-fiction, DIY, Hobbycrafts etc. etc.) and you'll find yourself in a desert of almost nothing.
    There ARE a few, but the ones I've found either have unintelligible narration or muddled presentation.
    Even those who upload really excellent walk-throughs of KDP protocols and procedures virtually never feature high content books. It's always those same two themes I listed at the start.
    I'm currently working towards uploading and self-publishing a high content book so, once that's done, I'll make a note of what I've discovered (as a newbie to KDP) and then make a quick upload for my channel.

    • @carriebartkowiak
      @carriebartkowiak Год назад +1

      That's because those aren't called "high-content books".
      They're novels, poetry books, non-fiction books.
      There's an ocean of tutorials out there, just use the right terms. "How to publish my novel on kdp," "publish a poetry book on kdp," "how to write non-fiction," etc etc etc.

    • @junglescout
      @junglescout  Год назад

      Thanks for jumping in for us! 🧡

    • @theverseshed
      @theverseshed Год назад

      @@carriebartkowiak That's pretty well the point I was making. However, I wanted to be fair, so I gave your suggestion a try, and almost without exception, the results narrowed down to picture books. Obviously, a story book for children can easily be a picture book (I follow Jules Marriner who has a brilliant channel for that genre and just look at the books by Oliver Jeffers).
      I tried 'how to publish a novella for children on KDP. That had almost the same result. Indeed, quite a few videos for any genre of children's book actually proved to be just walk-throughs of 'how to upload.'
      One good point would be that in terms of publication procedures, there seems to be no real difference because everything boils down to a PDF of the text and a flattened PDF of the cover. However, for genres such as, say, scripts, comic-style storyboards, poetry, interactive books etc. the importance of font choices, setting up your word processor page settings to match book sizes and formats etc. all come into play. Those are the areas I've been thinking about for my own project.
      As for the best walk-through's of uploading that I've settled on as being really helpful (for me) Bethany Atazadeh's was densely informative (I took 2 pages of notes):
      ruclips.net/video/hieHzwxZX3g/видео.html
      and Craig of SPE covered most of the same information but with a couple of additional tweaks:
      ruclips.net/video/HZtfPsjxT74/видео.html
      As I said, I'm keeping notes of my own experiences with a high content book for children. I'll filter out all those that are common across all genres, and will then make my own brief video in which I'll try to at least fill in a few of the blanks for those who are interested in publishing for that genre.

    • @FrenkTheJoy
      @FrenkTheJoy Год назад +2

      So many of the KDP tutorial videos I've seen are like 10 minutes of hard-to-understand tutorials for how to generate a word puzzle on a separate website but then zero info about how to even construct the book, royalty info, how to make the cover, how to decide how much to charge, advertising, etc.
      I think the REAL money is actually in making tutorial videos.

    • @theverseshed
      @theverseshed Год назад

      @@FrenkTheJoy That last point is a very good one. I focused on (at the most) 3 tutorial videos that helped me complete my first KDP project. I soon realised that almost all others covered exactly the same content and it was just a matter of finding those who had structured their tutorials so that everything was sequenced and clearly explained.

    I have a question about royalties and profit margins. If you price a book between $2.99 - $9.99, do you get 70% royalties regardless of how much it costs to print the book? Because you are not printing the book yourself, you don't need to think about production costs. How can you estimate what Amazon would need to spend to produce it to achieve the desired quality of finished product?

      The 70% and 35% royalties are for ebooks. You have to look at what the cost of printing is to see what a print book makes, typically a lot less. Amazon will give you this info when you create your book.

Also, can we use art drawings from google or other sites in our books?

      As for Canva's free content, I recommend reviewing their terms here: www.canva.com/policies/content-license-agreement/
      You can either print a large print version or the regular one separately. However, please do note that it may affect the number of pages due to font size, so this is something that needs to be considered.
