    I love it when a podcast feels like a conversation that happens to be recorded rather than someone being interviewed. This is an amazing example of that. Plus I can't get enough of business people going into the weeds of their thinking. Rather than spewing media soundbites.

  • @healthfirstfreelancer
    @healthfirstfreelancer 2 месяца назад +74

    I'm only 25 minutes in, but the "get one bigger client not 27 small clients" is such valuable advice and something I totally do in my business. I have one anchor client that provides the majority of my monthly income, and a couple smaller clients around that. To some people that seems risky, but I have great relationships with all of my clients and it's worked really well for me. It also means I don't have to constantly go looking for new clients because I have monthly retainers with my clients that repeat every month. Again, not everybody's bag but it really works for me as far as consistent income and low stress. It also means I've been able to get better and faster at those repeating projects, use AI to my advantage, etc. And now that I have that sort of on autopilot, I'm able to build something new on the side that will be more of a "passive" product, eventually. Great convo so far!

    • @healthfirstfreelancer
      @healthfirstfreelancer 2 месяца назад +2

      Ah the warm/cold outreach advice is so good too! New freelancers seriously underestimate the value of their own network. Talk to people who already know you about what you're offering! And the, "hey, here's this thing you need to know about for your business, just wanted to let you know," set up for potential clients is so good and almost EXACTLY what I did to get my anchor client. It really works. Just tell people what they need, demonstrate your expertise, and let them come to you.

    • @healthfirstfreelancer
      @healthfirstfreelancer 25 дней назад +1

      @@sameshoes For me, no not at all. Again, it's all about building those relationships with your clients. At the end of the day, most people don't want to work with robots, they want to work with cool, hard-working people. And so far, there are still insights, tone, style, etc. I can provide that AI can't.

    The problem with doing work for free is the rent is due every month. You have a finite time to work. The more work you do for free for a person the harder it will be for you to get them to pay for it in the future. So take into consideration that the people they will connect you with will want you to do it for free/cheap. It is great for building a portfolio or body of work, but in my experience telling them it would be "X" but I will give you a discount of "X" for this job, works better if you want to get more business from that client.

    • @sarahdanker-dake7379
      @sarahdanker-dake7379 Месяц назад +4

      I think you are missing the point here. The value of doing it for free is because the return you get is the "network" "portfolio" and "skill." Assuming you are not living with your parents or on a full ride college scholarship. Don't quite your day job, do this incrimentally. I've done this method of doing a ton for free just to gain the skill while doing a different job that I naturally had the skill for which was "organizing." The once I got the technical skill after a ton of trial and error, I specialized in the thing I really wanted to do and landed a job doing that. In the USA at least, you spend years of your life in grade school learn a ton of things for free before you go out into the world. It's only natural that this would be the case still for how you convince people you are worth the price you say you are.

    Towards the end when you're talking about writing consistently in small amounts every day, or writing in long bursts over a week or two, an important distinction is that you need to build up to those big bursts with consistency or you will burn yourself out.
    For people who already do a lot of writing as part of their job, you have a headstart, but someone who is starting from 0 needs to ramp up to big bursts.
    It's like running.
    You can't just decide to run a marathon unless you are already consistently running 10k a few times a week.
    If you want to be able to spend 8 hours a day writing, you don't start at 8 hours. You start with 15 minutes everyday then work your way up to an hour, then two.

    for the traditional vs self-publishing conversation, I think in Ali's case (and possibly more broadly), it's a matter of weighing which you value more, reach or money. If you value reach (and prestige), you have a better chance with traditional publishing, but if you value money, and you're willing to put in the work to do all the admin tasks to make it happen, self publish. It's also a question of if you are financially able to coordinate everything that the publisher would do for you (i.e. if you're a young, first-time author, you probably wouldn't have the finances available to spend on everything up-front like you have to do with self-publishing). Self-publishing seems to have more of a chance of success with a built-in audience (like Ali has).

    • @nicolascole77
      @nicolascole77 2 месяца назад +4

      People dramatically over-estimate how much it costs to self-publish a book well. New writers also drastically over-estimate how much a publisher is going to help them. I'm advocating for recognizing a) it doesn't cost that much, and b) give yourself some time to experiment and see what you can do on your own before you go sell 90% of your book to someone else.

The relationship between policies and the stock market can be complex and multifaceted, and it can take time for the full effects of policies to be reflected in market trends. To follow your passion every moment to the best of your abilities, with 0 expectations of where it will leads will take care of everything is needed when it is needed in your life and will always support you. The kit( to follow you highest excitement/ passion) contains absolutely everything.
      When you follow your passion you are always in alignment with Source/God/ Universe and it means that everything that is perfect for you comes effortlessly, joyfully, without stress and struggle. You are inspired every moment, receive the perfect ideas from Source and by acting on your inspiration and passion you will be led automatically to everything you need / want .
      When you don't follow you excitement you are not one with Source, and you are not supported in all you need every moment. Plus you are not happy, when you don't do what you love to do. When you are not in alignment you can't be in peace and joy all the time.

    the company shot down because the owner was doing tax fraud. Now I realized how under paid I was as PPC manager. Sub for both of you first video I saw from you like the algorithm was knowing what I need right now :D I am kinda doing writing too just ad copy. I am 27 old and actually thinking starting my own freelance career but I think finding a job first would be easier.
    From what I saw working for an agency and also dealing with clients most of them came from networking and mostly bad leads from online so that's what I am gonna do.

    Misleading title for this video. Whats being discussed is being a "subject matter expert" not a "writer". What you are selling is your expertise, not your ability to put words on paper in a compelling professional way.

    I've got to tell you guys, I was super impressed with your video and I enjoyed it so much I just want to say thanks. It was professional, and delivered high-value information at a time when most YT videos are just click bait. (I swear, if I see one more title that says, "Getting Rich is Easy", I'm going to womit. Yeah, womit is worse than vomit. ) And I realize that this hasn't got anything to do with what your content was about, but it was nice seeing two young guys, who are way smarter than me, having a great conversation that anyone could learn from. And the fact that you didn't use the queen mother of curse words every other other sentence just so you could look trendy, or whatever, was nice too. It was just plain polite speaking with wonderful content. Absolutely fantastic. As a matter of fact, I'm going to go back through this content and take notes. I've tried a lot of different ways to get copywriting clients and this one, by far , sounds like more fun. (And yes, I have a specific and detailed niche that I'm targeting within a clear skillset.) So, anyways, you guys rock!!!! Thanks for keeping it at a level I could understand and relate to. God bless!

My industry is people who do what I do… digital marketing agencies who are notorious for underpaying for content. So how does someone like me follow your advice to parlay my specialised knowledge into writing clients willing to pay thousands a month?

However, one of the most important questions you forgot to ask your guest is how you can be successful as a writer/ghostwriter in times of AI, where a ton of people are losing their writing jobs and online writing businesses have to close down. I can‘t believe you ignored that topic..,

      @@nicolascole77Well thank you for the update! Your answer comes across a little snappy while I expected it to be more eloquent. I‘m running a larger AI newsletter, and if you‘re thinking it‘s just another ‚tool‘ to be mastered, then you‘re being quite ignorant about the disruption of the writing industry, I‘m sorry. It‘s obvious it has to be addressed in these days, and I also mentioned why. There were comments regarding this on your channel that you didn‘t answer, for whatever reason.

      @@firsthelix6726 Did photoshop ruin the photography business? No, it created 100x more photographers. Did Netflix ruin the film industry? No it created 100x more films, and film genres. Did industrial agriculture ruin the farming business? No it made farming 100x more efficient. AI is just "another" one of these innovations, and the way it's going to impact writers is: the writers who understand how to leverage AI to "scale" their own thinking are going to yield 100x the returns. And everyone else who says, "AI is ruining writing! AI is taking my job!" is going to sit there and not understand what to do because the world changed and didn't wait around for them to figure it out.

    Just listened to this podcast. Loved the majority of it but there are a couple of points that didn’t sit right with me. Taking the piss out of someone charging £45 an hour for tutoring and belittling someone that comes to your events regularly. I agree that you probably don’t want to employ these people. Or think they will be super rich and successful in that respect. But they are both engaging in your content in a very big way. Which is more than a lot of people do.
    No one knows these people thankfully. But they probably listened to this podcast and I bet they feel terrible now.
