I have seen a lawyer talk about this on RUclips and it's his opinion that Amazon wants to provide transparency to their customers. In other words, Amazon wants to be completely honest with their customers as to whether they are buying original content or AI generated content. He also advises to be completely honest in our declaration.

    • @paulmarles

That seems a very reasonable opinion which I agree with.

Id imagine this is a way for them to get metrics on how many products are ai generated. It also puts them in a great place if they were to try training a model to determine whether something was AI generated. Now they have training data and and answers stored at scale.

Just saw an update kind of related to this "Amazon launches generative AI to help sellers write product descriptions" so it seems like they are on the AI train as well. I guess only time will tell which direction or approach they take. They could eventually make an AI model that will just produce their own products based on user searches and cut us out all together.

Labelling books would make sense. For the most part, it's quality that counts, AI or no AI, but I'm sure there are customers who'd rather want to support human creators. Because an artist would spend months drawing the colouring book or children's book pages, with AI it's almost only a click of a button. This is just an example but that's a huge difference.

As always, your videos are always very helpful and sincere, Paul. I started publishing on KDP because of you. Yes, that famous dinosaur coloring book of yours 😄. Within 10 days after playing your dinosaur video over and over again, making notes, checking the transcript and using your interior and cover guides, I managed to publish my 1st coloring book within 10 days...
No, it's not a from rags to riches, or from zero to hero story but it was a major achievement for me. I now have 2 coloring books and 6 journals out there on KDP....all thanks to you.
I believe in honesty and integrity in all that we do. And as far as 'borrowing' or taking from AI, we should come clean about our content.
Yes, I will declare on KDP how much of my content is from AI....
And thank you also for your advice to not put all our eggs in one basket, to weigh all the risks that we take, and to move forward accordingly.

I suspect it's like you said, 1) Amazon may be using it initially to gather data and 2) subsequently scrutinize those books more closely (could mean those books may experience some delay in publishing). Also I wonder if some people using AI are properly checking if those images are elsewhere, or even if the AI is a good quality (example: cat has five paws instead of four).

Maybe you didn’t generate the AI images yourself, but the person who posted them might have used AI to generate them. I wonder if this would be a “yes” or “no” to the question on whether or not we used AI content in the book.

Honestly, no one knows for sure why Amazon wants to know if you're publishing with the help of AI or not. One thing is for sure though, Amazon wants to monitor those books. I'm pretty sure that Amazon will not ban AI-created books as long as they comply with the rules (quality, copyright, etc.). Let's face the present: AI is here to say and get better! Publishing a "human-created" book doesn't mean it's better than an AI-generated book. It's like saying that machine washing your clothes is worse than hand washing them. Nonsense!
    All the best!

You can transfer or sell a trademark in perpetuity but the same can't be said for copyright. Copyright (after 1978) still has a threshold of Author's Life + 70 Years. Prior to 1978, the maximum duration is 95 years which is the first 28 years then you'd have to renew and get an additional 67 years, but again not to eclipse 95 years total (auto renewal started in 1992). If you failed to renew it is then public domain. If 95 years have passed it's public domain. If the author has been dead for 70 years plus a day then it's public domain. You can't keep/transfer copyright in perpetuity. A trademark can provided it is renewed accordingly and on schedule.
Artists that have been dead for well over 100 years no longer have copyright protection on their works. This would include artists, sculptors, musicians, etc. Any work that can be rendered in a tangible medium.

Your section on Adobe Stock Photos was very interesting, not only because they are labeling AI content, but that they are recognizing AI as a creative tool and are purchasing product from AI assisted creators. I noticed the Creative Fabrica is also labeling content that has been created by AI or with the assistance of AI.

I remember when I joined MidJourney and I think it was when I paid for their "Standard" level it stated, or maybe they state it to all even in the free memberships, that all images are your own, are not under some copyright or legal issue. I wrote my whole trilogy myself with zero help from AI, all purely myself. I hope it stays at that and because my cover image came from MJ maybe they make the clear distinction the image and not my story is AI generated. Is that right, in the end does KDP put on the inside pages image is AI generated but not the story? I hope so.

To avoid the AI problem, I either buy images or use free, open licensed images to cut pieces out and create an image because I can't afford models. I've literally made individual people Frankensteined together into a believeable person and even whole scenes. If I do use AI, I use landscapes that I splice together or I generate in the hopes of a cool texture forming so I can crop and use it as an overlay for added effect and dimension in my images.

As a romance author, it's my understanding that KU has been inundated with AI generated books. Many authors are starting to remove their books from KU for this reason. This may be Amazon's attempt to curb this. So this may be more for high content books....not so much low content books. I wouldn't worry so much about covers... it's the content in the book that is concerning. Also, if you register your book thru the US copyright office, they ask you about your use of AI also.

FYI I just submitted a coloring book, I checked :
Yes I used AI; Many AI generated images with minimal editing
I had 1 error they had me fix with bleed, after I fixed it, it is live.
So, my first coloring book I created that I had to answer those questions about, I answered very truthfully how I created it, and it is live now. No issues.

@@paulmarles I'd like to think that if KDP is going to decide to not allow, or ban, items created using majority AI, they would make an announcement, and allow creators to change their future content, rather than straight-up discontinue accounts and ban them without notice. I understand they need to collect data for their purposes as a company. Much like Adobe has done.

I wonder where it stands to use techniques like map bashing or image bashing along with ControlNet and AUTOMATIC1111. I mean you are manually creating an image montage (in photoshop or gimp, etc) which you then use to generate new images. There's also scrible, sketch or line art Controlnet models so you can pass your own doodles or lineart to create completed images. I'm assuming those would count as AI assisted images??...

    • @paulmarles
      @paulmarles  Год назад +1

If you're creating the original image that is then being modified by AI then that sounds like AI assisted.

I'm about to upload a game I invented for families to play. I did use AI to help with the write-up of the rules, first by explaining the rules to the AI and then having it write up two sets of instructions - one targeted to the children and one targeted to the parents. I DID come up with the concept and instructions on my own, but I used AI to refine those instructions to best fit the target audiences I wanted to reach. If I included the sets of instructions as written by AI, would this be considered AI-generated content, or AI-assisted? I would say AI assisted since I came up with the original content and just asked AI to refine it in a specific way. Any thoughts on this from anyone? I'm feeling a little confused about it.

My guess is: They use this information to train an AI model which automatically detects AI generated books. You basically feed their AI detection algorithm. They might change their TOS or not depending on if the turnover generated by the AI books is higher than the damage caused by lawsuits and complaints about AI generated content. Even certain countries might introduce some laws that prohibit AI content. In any case, it's a wise decision by Amazon.

I suspect they do their AI checks when it comes to text. There are plenty tools available to detect AI generated content, so there's no reason why Amazon would not use it. I guess they just named it 'research' but plan to use that information in one or another way (like Paul pointed out too) at one point. I personally would not risk getting my account banned for this.

Amazon is a beast. A machine. Anyone who has had to deal with Amazon "customer service" as a seller on FBA, MOD or KDP knows they are tyrannical, brutal, heartless. Am I going to deliberately assist this billion dollar company to "research" new ways to terrorize, dominate and intimidate their small time creators? Not a chance.

Any creator using AI this way is burning a candle at both ends. Once the technology becomes ubiquitous, nobody will buy books obviously generated by AI. I think that it would be wiser to invest in creating books with traditional art...and a brand that is certified as hand made. Once AI gets perect it will be boring.
