New tanks off of the assembly line are stored outside awaiting delivery. Since the tracks are bare steel, they rust like crazy but otherwise when operating on their own power, no rust. Park it for a couple of days in the depot and presto, rust again. Great job Andy.
That is one hell of a filthy tank. Personally I think all that weathering ect. is a bit much. Whenever we had down time and near a water source, like a stream or pond I'd have the men drive it in and do some washing. A clean tank is a happy tank and commander.
I like the idea of having plastic tracks for the experience and serious builders and the rubber tracks for the beginner and people who just want build the tank all in one kit like this one. That's why i love Tamiya its can be challenging on some models but fun and enjoyable.
I have a JS2.Great model. Don't weather my models all that much. I used the plastic track, and used the rubber track on another old T10 that I had. Great videos. Thanks
alway a great way to help get to sleep just throw a vid on from Andy and let it just relax you and out like a light you go. great vid :) Tanks for the great upload
Great, great, great video! I picture this tank to be going through the rubble streets of Berlin, knocking down buildings and concrete walls. You should do a diorama with a rubble building. Awesome job!
Love the video Andy. It goes to show, you can do as much or as little as you want. Its your model you do it your way, and don't let anyone tell you its wrong.
I love your videos and have to say you've got what has to be my dream job! You mentioned how a lot of the weathering is subjective. I spent 8 years in the artillery when I was younger in a self propelled artillery battalion ending up as a chief of fire direction. In my first couple years I was the driver of an m577A1 command post carrier. One of the things that I remembered quite well was the fact that other than a barely noticeable sag of the tracks that was not something that was common. Now I know different armored vehicles at different times had much different maintenance and standard usage. The "nice sag" as you call it was just not there. My unit used m109A1 155mm howitzers and though as a fire direction computer had little to do with the guns, but being around them day after day I recall they did not have noticeable sag. That only seemed to occur when the tracks had somehow loosened or were damaged. I have seen old ww2 footage of various vehicles of that time and have seen many with sag, but not all. When I see that I just think someone was not doing their daily maintenance. It's not a big deal just a personal preference of mine I just don't like putting big, drooping sag on my models. It's just personal preference. Anyways love your videos and hope you continue building them for a long time
One of my first jobs was working at a landfill and it really doesn't take long for a newly painted heavy equipment to look weathered even more than this tank and we were only assaulted by fliers
The weathering effects on the tracks are astounding, if you look on some war time photos they're identical, this kit is really as simple as good, as the real tank, lighter than a Tiger I but more powerful armed.
Just bought this kit. Since I’ve started watching your videos, my models now look like real tanks, and not like children’s toys. Thanks for all the awesome hints and tips 👍👍👍
Very nice build and excellent "step by step". As always. (I built one of the DML's earlier this year. Nice build. I do prefer the fit of Tamiya kits.) Thnx.
I got a few Vallejo pigments the other week and one was titanium white pigment powder I wasn't to sure of it but bought it just to have so tried it out on my practice Sherman and waw! It's great for adding highlights and using for woren through pain streaks etc and it's really good for an ash look if you wanted to do a burnt out tank which iv never seen in a diarama yet so I'm thinking along the way of a burn out Sherman since it's just a practice model it'll still come in useful
Nice build Andy :) I've done the same IS-2 and I must say it was fun to build at first I used the rubber tracks but then I thought let me try out the track links but then I thought to my self why don't I give the tank its natural sag whilst being able to move so I used the heavy wired linked tracks. Did 432 with the Bear and Star insignia and hand painted the white stripes then dusted up the crew and tank and made a flag for them to wave out of toothpicks and a tissue lol dusted it up with a charcoal black chalk for soot and dust and used a rust toned chalk to rust up my tracks, yours seemed to look better than mine keep up the good work
Hey Andy, a bent paperclip heated up with a lighter will make really good ricochet marks. I've used it to great effect on a Panther A I recently built.
Hello Andy, have you already a video or can you please explain to us the difference between lacquer, acrilyc and enamel thinner. I am newbie in the modeling world and I do not know clearly what is the different between each thinner. Excuse my english I am francophone (french) from Montreal Quebec :-)
Another great video, man. I started building models February this year and your videos taught me very many great painting and weathering techniques that I use myself. Keep it up, congrats on 100k!
Very great guide, Andy. If possible I would like to ask if you could make a guide for modern armored cars and their clear parts for lights, etc. I cannot seem to find a good guide on how to paint the clear parts and especially when. Should I paint them last and glue them on last or should I paint while building and mask them off? Which colors should I use and which colors will make a glass kind of look? I really hope you could help out with this as many modelers do old tanks instead of modern armored cars.
Excellent build 👍 Do you use some kind of retarder with the Tamiya paints for the sponge chipping? I've sprayed a T-34 with Tamiya paints but when I tried to do the sponge chipping with a lighter mix the Tamiya paint had dried on my palette and sponge before I could do more than a couple of dabs.
the weathering is real nice ....however you forgot to add some bend and twisted metal , a tank that bit up got always some scratches but don't get me wrong I am your biggest fan!
Well done!👍 Really like how you concentrated on the painting and weathering of the tracks and lower suspension. Nice kit and looks great finished. Thanks for another excellent video!
Its the 1944 variant cause of the sloping front plate, the JS-2 standard type is the same as the JS-152 which you've built for us, Great work as always, Personally I would of used the fruilmodel tracks since they're easier to rust/weather.
Nice work Andy. I have this kit and love the look of it but haven't built it yet, so this is good timing. Like how you have gone to town on the weathering
Hey Andy! Im building the same tank right now! And today I was gonna start painting, then I saw yor video. You sir is a godsendt! One little thing: the top plate on the gun mantle is facing the wrong way........
@@rexiejay-3424 It is the result of a simplifiction. The cyrillic 'j' (й) and 'i' (и) is the same letter, but the j has a sign (I dont know the correct name for that modifier, its not an umlaut) over it. Hi Andy, you are right it is not clear how to say, because the IS came from the Russian spelling of Iossif Stalin, but mor common is Josef Stalin so both seem to be right..keep going I love to watch your videos.
This is one of your more artistic weathering jobs . I would say the numbers on the tank would be faded and had bleached marks or had some chip marks also.
Great build, just wondering though are those decals for the half star and white bear on the wrong side? On the box art the bears are facing forward but yours are facing backwards.
Just wondering... why did you use all the light desert colours on the lower hull on a tank that never even came close to a desert ? Why not use the darker earth colours appropriate for the Soviet and eastern-Europe area it was deployed in ?
Just started with pin washes and a bit unclear, using enamel wash am I best to apply on an enamel or acrylic varnish ? Thanks in advance, any advice would be very welcome
so once you're finished with the paint job, you put a coat of ts-80 to seal it. Then why put another coat of paint on it? I thought you're supposed to put the weathering and decals on a model that's been sealed? I'm still learning.
Awesome tank, my IS was the first tank i three marked in WoTs so it will always be a favorite of mine. Would love to get the 1/16 Tamiya RC version but its really expensive even as 1/16 scale tanks go.
Another great build Andy!!! Do you think you could do a video showing us how to do battle damage? bullet holes, shell hits, bounces, open damaged areas?? Maybe a possible aviation variant of that as well?
I find watching Andy build more relaxing than building myself. I always enjoy watching. Another great project.
Glad you enjoyed it
Hey. Sorry if this comment is 3 year late but thanks for the tip how to make those bumps on the track! I have Isu-152 and it made it better looking.
Almost finished building this kit. Its a great kit which is surprising being Tamiya
It's my favorite tank and I'm looking to buy it the next time I go to the official tamiya store in my country
If it's your favourite tank then you must be aware of who its named after

I love the tank and in World of tanks blitz it’s called the IS-2 but amazing work I just got one for my self.
Loved. the heavy weathering. Would like to see this on a diorama. Nice job
I have a JS2.Great model. Don't weather my models all that much. I used the plastic track, and used the rubber track on another old T10 that I had. Great videos. Thanks
one of the best you have done. a lot of modelers dont weather tanks enough.
amen to that !!!!
Really nice buddy, a friend of mine told me to put clean steel wool in a bottle with vinegar and when it rust use it on my tanks
alway a great way to help get to sleep just throw a vid on from Andy and let it just relax you and out like a light you go. great vid :) Tanks for the great upload
those tamiya rubber band tracks are a gift sent from god
I think the bear should be looking forward not backward... anyway great job as usual!
i love all your content, ive learned an immense amount since ive started watching you about a year ago
It was nice meeting you today, Andy. We got to see where you make the magic happen. Have fun at the nationals this weekend.
Ian and Christie
Great, great, great video! I picture this tank to be going through the rubble streets of Berlin, knocking down buildings and concrete walls. You should do a diorama with a rubble building. Awesome job!
Thank you.
Berlin, you say. What buildings? What walls?
Or I should rather say remains of buildings, rubble.
Great weathering job on the JS2. Once again great build. Thanks Andy.
Love the video Andy. It goes to show, you can do as much or as little as you want. Its your model you do it your way, and don't let anyone tell you its wrong.

I know this is an old video but I love the look of this tank and now have to go muck up a tank myself!
The weathering effects on the tracks are astounding, if you look on some war time photos they're identical, this kit is really as simple as good, as the real tank, lighter than a Tiger I but more powerful armed.
I haven't even started to watch the video and I gave it a like because well Andy is awesome at what he does.
Just bought this kit. Since I’ve started watching your videos, my models now look like real tanks, and not like children’s toys. Thanks for all the awesome hints and tips 👍👍👍
I think this is your best weather project yet. Nice job!
Put this kit together a while ago and have not weathered it yet, thank you for the guide!
GREAT BUILD!! one of the best you have done.
This is an awesome video! You are awesome Andy, and you have the best modeling channel on youtube.
Recently built the IS3, now i may have to go get the IS2 as well, after I finish the Trumpeter KV7 and KV220...
I really need to build this kit. It looks so good when beat up and abused. Thanks for posting this video.
Awesome build Andy! Will see you Saturday at IPMS!
Very nice build and excellent "step by step". As always.
(I built one of the DML's earlier this year. Nice build. I do prefer the fit of Tamiya kits.)
Thnx.
Very nice work Andy, she looks terrific!!👍🏻

wow that is nuts.Andy want that kit now.so so nice wish that i can do this.need lots of brushes and skill.w0w
on some tanks the barrel would move back into the turret. you should do some BIG scratches on the linkage of a Turret and a barrel.
Very beautiful build! I have learned many things from your videos!
Cool weathering

Really like the weathering
...AWESOME ANDY!!!!!!! THANKS!!! I LOVE THE WEATHERING TIPS...
love the finished product
Build this kit some months ago and it was really nice. I used those rubber tracks and it looks like it was a bad choice. Anyway nice build.
Great build.
Another great video, man. I started building models February this year and your videos taught me very many great painting and weathering techniques that I use myself. Keep it up, congrats on 100k!

Hey, just like to add a massive thanks, tamiya extra thin is awesome
WOW!! An absolutely amazing job!!

Hey man, I have a question. Can the turret rotate in these Kits and Tanks?
PS. Great kit!
Excellent and informing video; very well done.
superb Andy!, far from mediocre, congratulations!
the weathering is real nice ....however you forgot to add some bend and twisted metal , a tank that bit up got always some scratches but don't get me wrong I am your biggest fan!
Well done!👍 Really like how you concentrated on the painting and weathering of the tracks and lower suspension. Nice kit and looks great finished. Thanks for another excellent video!
I think that this your best looking model yet!! I’d love to see it in a diorama! :)
Andy, can you put a flat coat on the pigments to seal it, or will it ruin the affects you are trying to achieve?
Great Build ,Andy!
Looks awesome Andy, great work! 👍👌👏
Very good Andy! I really like the weathering technique’s that you do, looks like the real thing! 👍👍✌🏻❗️

I have this same model but i dont have the every of these washes and you are very very good build models
Hey Andy! Im building the same tank right now! And today I was gonna start painting, then I saw yor video. You sir is a godsendt! One little thing: the top plate on the gun mantle is facing the wrong way........
Ahh fixed it......
good work Andy
Don't worry about it being JS or IS, it just means Joseph Stalin, ioseph in IS case.
@Ezequiel Braden I care
True
Clever👍🏻

what can I say? simply beautiful tank!! keep the vids coming
Great kit!
Thank you.
Can you make battle dammage on the tanks like bullet holes
•TheKaisTzar • but very much possible. It's not like it didn't happen
Great build, just wondering though are those decals for the half star and white bear on the wrong side? On the box art the bears are facing forward but yours are facing backwards.
Great job been modeling along time. One thing in every photo on Russian tanks you see the log ?
Nice one Andy 👍🇳🇿
Great build, wonderful paint job as ever. Now, where's my IS...............????
Very good SBS video...thanks Andy👍!
Great job Andy! Very inspiring!!
Andy you need a vacation :) from working so hard. Great Video!
matt mckean You noticed also :)

Looks great! I can't wait to see what you do a heavy weathering job on next!
Is there a Kirov class battlecruiser model kit available? That seem like it would be an awesome build.

Great job andy keep up the great work
Where are the figures that were included? They are shown on the box art. Why didn't you put those in as well?
Very informative. Would like to see how you make a snow diorama.
Andy which airbrush do You use? Thanks from Argentina
Awesome tank, my IS was the first tank i three marked in WoTs so it will always be a favorite of mine. Would love to get the 1/16 Tamiya RC version but its really expensive even as 1/16 scale tanks go.
Sleepy .Time I yave a Jagdpanther rc 1/16 scale and a tiger but a bit smaller.
Yeah, the IS-2 was my first model tank ever. It was from Zvezda. It was Uuugly! Well, yeah. Bye?
Another great build Andy!!! Do you think you could do a video showing us how to do battle damage? bullet holes, shell hits, bounces, open damaged areas?? Maybe a possible aviation variant of that as well?
This would be nice, also would work with this heavy weathering.
Wonderful video, thank you for posting. Please what is the spaceship in the bottom of the display case?
What is that little thing you use for the tracks that makes them sort of curved
Js2 = Joseph Stalin tank production 2
In russian its spelled iosif stalin
Andy; since it appears you use the NATO black as a primer coat; what is your thinning ratio of curioisity
Katyusha plays in the background
