Hi everyone! A viewer pointed out that the turret ring is partially exposed and it should not be. This is because the two thin pieces of armor siding on either side of the ring should be seated a bit higher. I have corrected this on my model, but the holes that you drill earlier are slightly too low, causing the seating issue. Keep this in mind when you build yours. - Andy

I. Like your videos and I have to say, that you make a really good reviews. After this build up, I have a some questions.
Why don't you use a dry pigments? Are better than a washes, what can be use to make a... wash :)
Streaking effects can be use by oil paint. Are so easy to control.

@@KnjazGromowladny think of your end result that you want. dry pigment is great for like dirt, dust or powdery material. Oil paints are also great for washes. I have used thinned acrylic, but thats not so good, doesnt always look good - it dries too fast. tamiya and others sell pre-made washes. For the price of a bottle one can get a tube of oil paint that will make 100x the bottle quantity. Tubes of oil paint is a better long term value, they will last for years and years.
@@orbitalair2103 I've got some ready to use washes, but still sometimes use oils for wash. Andy used 'streaking effect' to do a fading effect, used paint. It's only a tool, but doting technic is more effective in my opinion.

I love seeing these model makers on FB. I made this model, winter of 1975. I loved it and the current model makers are......incredible!!!!
Fits together better than the actual tanks, which were pretty crude.
I hear they were prone to the turret jamming and the engine dying (because the tank was heavy)
Such an aesthetically pleasing tank to look at ( imo ). I’ve been a fine arts painter, for over 20 years. Aside from modeling as a child, I’ve only got a handful of builds under my belt, as an adult. Other than deciphering vague instructions/illustrations, I find the part cutting/sanding/installing process, really gratifying and therapeutic. I don’t dread cutting and sanding links, in the slightest. I enjoy the daunting stack of sprues, and compartmentalizing the steps, and watching it start to come together, one piece at a time. For 20 years, i’ve worked with acrylic, oils, enamels, watercolors, sign painting, pinstriping, calligraphy, tattooing, pen & ink, etc, so I have a couple decades of experience. That said, I’ve built kits, and set them aside to paint down the road, to start new kits, because I just love the build process lol

The KV-1(Kliment Voroshilov) was a monster heavy tank. There is the famous incident in June 1941 at Rassenyaya in Russia where just one KV-1, which apparently had run out of fuel,held up an entire German division for 48 hours. Its armour was virtually impenetrable and was not damaged even after taking 14 direct hits. Eventually the Germans brought up undercover an 88mm to fire at its rear and score 12 direct hits, 3 penetrating the armour, which destroyed it. Most KV-1s were not lost due to enemy action but mechanical failure or lack of fuel. For all you history buffs as well as modellers out there!
did we REALLY need to know all that crap .. This is about a model of the KV-1 not it's bloody history.. if you want to find out about it there are plenty of sites dedicated to tank history.
That looks fantastic ! If anything, the parts fit *too* well - the T-34-85 in the Tank Museum at Bovington in England has a gap between two hull plates that you can put your fingers into right to the third knuckle !

Hi Andy, thank you for the Academy Hobby T-34 tank and all the supplies in February. Locked down in CCP Virus quarantine, but with kits from your shop to keep me content.
Been a Tamiya fan since the 1980, when I built a ton of armor models with my friends. Being 14 yrs old at the time, we then decided to blow them up in a mock battle, using firecrackers as our explosives. Could kick myself now, knowing all the great models I ruined. I love this new model, and I'm hoping I can get around to building more after this crisis is all over. Seems we're all looking at everything just a little bit differently now, and I think once the new normal settles in, many of us are gonna take more time to smell roses and build models.

Haha! Brings back great memories of my childhood, building battleship models with my friends, packing them with firecrackers and sending them out into the lagoon at dusk. Great explosions.
A few weeks ago, I built Tamiya's 1:35 M5A1 stuart, and even for an older kit, that thing went together so easily!

A little late to the game, but a totally enjoyable build video! I have the older Tamiya KV1 and love it, but the difference in this one and the one I have is so great, that I am compelled to try to get one of these now! I hate link tracks, but your never say die attitude, plus the open side access to the tracks, makes this not so threatening. A super vid and a well done kit!

good looking build. that mud cleaner for the drive sprocket was a detail often omitted on a good portion of earlier kits, glad to see it's in this one.

Great video!!! After building Tamiya's 1970s kit versions of the KV-1, KV-2, & KV-1C numerous times throughout the years, really was not interested in building this kit. HOWEVER, after seeing this kit on the shelf of a hobby shop last month (yep - still enjoy visiting ACTUAL hobby shops!!), decided to purchase this kit. GLAD I DID!!! Cannot PRAISE this kit enough. Kit practically builds itself, it is engineered that meticulously. Just like you said in the video - parts literally snap into place during dry-fitting and just have to glue them in place. Parts count is low, so this was a very quick build. Tamiya's individual track links are ALWAYS user friendly and had no problems with them. Decals are basically the same as in Tamiya's other version of the KV tank series, so am thinking about a winter camo scheme. The figure was great - probably one of Tamiya's best ever. So anyway, THANKS!!! for "talking" me into purchasing/building another Tamiya kit that have built in its original form one time or another and then, after watching your video of said kit, going out and purchasing/building my own. Yep - definitely why I prefer Tamiya kits: EASE of construction!! Actually finished a 1970s KV-1 kit in painted it as a captured Finnish Army vehicle, when this video came out. Actually told myself NO need to purchase this kit, but......

The side plate (all plates) rough cuts are because its 'flame cut', cut with an acetylene torch, fastest way to cut thick steel at the time.
orbitalair It’s still one of the fastest ways or more like the easiest i guess haha
@@kshatriya1414 Yes it still is for plates >1 inch thick, Plasma cutters makes short work of thinner plates and are cheaper to use and automate. Guys making stuff from 1/4inch plate on a plasma cnc table can make very precise parts. Also remember, armor plate is hardened, very hard stuff.
orbitalair Awesome breakdown!. I was unsure of the fastest way because it’s so depended on the material like you mentioned so i added easiest as well because it doesn’t require something super fancy to work

I recently just finished my first kit with link and link tracks, (TAMIYA 1/48 Panther ausf.D) and I was a bit skeptical because I’m not a huge fan of plastic tracks because my first ever tank model was a Revell 1/72 Leopard 2a6 and the tracks gave me hell to say the least, so since then I’ve been a hater of plastic tracks. But I started realizing most kits I want have link n link so I thought to myself, might give it a go, because Andy likes them so they should be fine.. and wow, I really love them. They’re super easy to do and not difficult at all, and they look absolutely amazing.

Great build. I have already thought up a diorama for this one. It will be a tank of the 12TH Russian Tank Division at the largest tank battle if WW2, Tthe battle of Brody on the southern front starting on Jund 23 1941. This model will be one of many that ran out of fuel in the opening day of the battle. Cannot wait to get ahold of this one.
I'd do it up as Lt. Pavel Gudz's tank in the Nov. 7, 1941 parade through Red Square. I have a photo reference. It would need a figure of Gudz in the turret hatch and extra fuel tanks on the fenders. And a lot cleaner than Andy did his. :-)
I really like those tracks!, I’m not the biggest fan of vinyl/rubber tracks and while i’ve never worked with “workable track links?” they seem to be quite time consuming to put together so these seems like a great middle ground!

Finally found one I haven't seen!! Oh, I have yet to build a model with link and link track. No, I don't want to build one.
Good video!! Am actually in the process of working on Tamiya's original KV-1. Making it look like a captured vehicle pressed into Finnish service. Noticed that the decals from the original kit and this new kit are the same, except for a very few differences.
Vast improvement over Tamiya's earlier kits with this new track! Far better etching too. Guess I'll grab the updated M-551 kit after all (at some point, as the shop up the street is closed for the duration). Support your local economies! Stay safe!

I like Tamiya kits I do remember Sdkfz 222 or Tiger I , I built them when I was at elementary school and I can build them now too:-) The new Tamiya kits are awesome but unlike Trumpeter or Dragon etc etc they arent so complicated the result is very nice looking model though. I belive the reason that the tracks are built in different number on each side is because, torsion bar suspensions had one side set a little further up than the other so the bars wouldn't interfere

Hey Andy got a great tip for tracks in kits separate tracks I mean so when all assembled put the track on the top of the road wheels and use a hairdryer and fold it around and u got a good looking track there is a video on RUclips search up single tracks hairdryer technique

Put drive sprocket on at same time... its easy to dry glue on both, drop the sprocket half on, then bracket and push drive on...
