Background ponies don't usually talk, but in the wake of relatively recent changes to that formula, such as Rainbow Rocks and Slice of Life, we manage to be confused by one pony's continued silence: Vinyl Scratch. Theories have been tossed around about her simply being mute, and rather than simply having nothing canon to confirm or deny, the canon information itself seems to flip back and forth. So what's the verdict? Science Pony is here to figure that out... if he can.

What if because Vinyl had a disability in speaking and because of that she had grown into music in expressing it as her voice?

The fact that we see a soundwave in Vinyl's glasses at the end of Music to My Ears, to me, serves as (admittedly flimsy) evidence that Vinyl has synesthesia, in this case she can "see" sound. Synesthesia is a condition that often develops in people deprived of one of their senses. So yes, I believe that Vinyl Scratch is mute, because she's also deaf!

WOW. That's just another level. I don't know about being deaf part (I prefer thinking of tinnitus for that matter), but synesthesia? As someone who have one (different type though), I like that theory.
In slice of life we were in her PoV and there she did hear music and that brown pony talking, so just mute

I'm wondering if she can, but the creators keep her mute for us. She is the silent nod to us. She doesn't speak because that would detract from all the work Nowacking and others we have done.
I doubt that she is mute, this is what I think
She is either:
•Secretly shy but is too afraid to admit it
•Self-conscious of her voice because she thinks it sounds weird
•Worried that if she talks her fans (in their world) will go insane over her
•Has been cursed by a villain and can' never talk
•Went too crazy one night and lost her voice
•Sometimes messes up her words and is embarrassed
Well that's what I think anyway
I am leaning toward she is shy because in "Equestrian Girls: Friendship Games", during Rainbow's speech, you can see her chanting. Granted this could be her pretending but not in my head cannon. She doesn't talk because she is very shy about it but her overall personality is outgoing because in "Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks" she is very willing to help. The mane six did save her life and many others but still.

Anyhow, your last point could be valid. In people with certain speech impediments (stuttering and the like) they often refrain from speaking, rather than risk stumbling over their words.
However, i believe one of the writers let slip sometime in 2016 that Vinyl doesnt speak because she doesnt like talking, however since i myself didnt hear it, and the video's always have poor audio, i wont cite it as fact.
I don't think that's the case since Vinly (DJ Pon 3) doesn't have a voice actress at all. And this might be the toughest MLP cass of all of Equestria
But 1 thing for sure that she doesn't speak to others. She rather talk or speak through music like she always does

Disclaimer: This is based on what I've read, seen on a documentary, and House MD. I'm likely wrong on the finer mechanics of deaf mutes.
Bass heavy music is apparently pretty popular with deaf people (the ones born that way) since they are able to feel the vibrations of the bass and can "hear" it that way.
Most if not all people born deaf are also effectively mute. They can still make verbal noises, but talking is highly difficult since they can't hear others or themselves. Which makes initally learning how to make the corresponding mouth movements and vocal cord noises, as a child, to simply say their own name, highly difficult.
You've probably seen/felt the effect of not hearing or having trouble yourself speak has, if you've had ear plugs in (or in an especially noisy place), and noticed that your tongue movement is a little off.
Specialized coaching for them to verbally speak while deaf, takes a lot of effort.
Though honestly, who DOESN'T like the feel of loud bass vibrating in your chest while at a concert or club?
Also, considering that Scootaloo was physically disabled (unable to fly (beyond her brief hovers)) by Lauren Faust while she was still drafting the world, it wouldn't be too far fetched for the writers to have another disabled character.
In addition, Derpy has a pretty prominent physical abnormality in the form of her skewed eyes.
I've always loved the headcanon that Vinyl is deaf. I would like to kindly point out that, while you did get most of your information right, one part you are (slightly) misinformed is that most deaf people are mute. Firstly, the term *deaf mute* is offensive to the Deaf community (I'm pretty sure, I'm not deaf myself). Secondly, most deaf people are not mute, whether they were born deaf or not. Most people who were born deaf and were raised to be Deaf, however, don't like using their voices very often, for the exact reasons you listed. They can't hear themselves or others, and they would need to go to speech therapy to learn how to form the different verbal noises that they've never even heard before. But besides my nitpickiness, I very much agree with your thoughts; Vinyl very well can be deaf, and that's why she doesn't speak.
I know am years late but what your saying sounds very true and believe that she does have a disability, if it's being mute or deaf I just believe it's a little representation for people born or with disabilities uwu
Well, Vinyl could just be a silent pony. She does enjoy music and partying, but she really isn't interesting in making conversations with others and prefers to communicate using texts, hand, or hoof gestures. Those are just my thoughts.

she can talk, but she only does so off contract, or when the cameras are gone. so says my headcannon.
If Vinyl does end up talking in an episode, they definitely would blunder hugely if they don't try to get Jessi (NW) as her voice, since most of the fans (i believe) accept her as the Official Unofficial voice. Bass Cannon.
+ILuvKonata Problem with that is that, 99% of the time, when you get hired to voice a character in something, you're contractually prevented from ever voicing them in anything else. So she wouldn't be able to do the Vinyl voice for fan projects anymore.
+RLYoshi Ah, I didn't know that. But there is also the possibility they could make an exception if she became the Official voice for her due to all of her fan support and popularity. Also, it's amazing you replied to me already. I only just found your channel somehow. I was watching Game Grumps, and it was in the suggested videos. But now I'm really enjoying them! I haven't looked around yet, but are there any episodes of your show having to do with Gilda or Luna? Gilda is probably one of my favorite characters in the series, and I do love Luna a ton.

Well, in EQG1 and 3, she did at least MOUTH the words to This is Our Big Night and CHS Rally respectively, as well as in Simple Ways when she shushed Pinkie... And in Magical Mystery Cure, she did laugh at Spike. Sure we didn't actually HEAR her, but... I think she's not mute, she just prefers not to speak. Season 6 is a good chance, but the Nowacking theory is the most evident.
+Cilan Steele Mouthing the words is likely what she did, and it's possible to laugh silently. And it's possible for a mute person to go "Shhh" since that sound's just made from forcing air quickly out of your mouth, not from actually using your voice.

she can't be deaf as she listens to music and can under stands words, and I doubt she was born with out vocal cords, or lost them due to injury, as she doesn't use hoof(hand) language I guess you could say people could understand her by facial expressions and lip movements, but I sounds unlikely so I guess we will never know

Anna heartwarming where they talk about the windows you can see vinyl talking to Octavia but we don't hear her talking we just hear everybody else's voice but hers isn't clear enough for us to actually listen and hear her Hasbro thought they were slick but I caught it right in time to look at them and just say why don't you let us hear her voice
DJ doesn't sing with everyone in S6E08, but she can clearly hear everyone singing as she nods accordingly. That one convinced me, she had no reason not to sing.
I love the idea that vinyl is mute! It is so important for all kinds of kids to feel represented and be able to see a character like them.
The concept of Vinyl being mute is cool! She manages to be the loudest by letting the music talk for her. I’ve seen a clip where she’s mouthing out words to Octavia in the background of an episode, so maybe she’s comfortable talking(?) with Octavia, but for the most part she can’t talk to others. So something along the lines of selective mutism?

My theory:
when vinyl actually got a character they didn't know who should voice her because they didn't want the fandom to start a mob. **cough** Nowacking **cough** So they were just like, "Eh- let's hope the bronies won't make theories about this."

What if she's on the ASD spectrum? Sun glasses could be to deal with light, she doesn't rly talk much but can be social, listens to music all the time possibly to limit stress from different noises around her n focussing on just one sound that keeps her going. Some of my friends are on the ASD spectrum and she reminds me of a few of them. It's just a theory, and I don't have authority to say she has it because I don't, but. It's a thought.
i thought the title said "is Vinyl Male?" which is an idea i've had recently, since there is no show-canon gender for Vinyl that i can think of

Must've been remembering wrong, then. Still, her being male seems to be a pretty far-fetched theory that relies entirely on the grounds of "she's never referred to as female". By that logic, about half the background characters could be any gender.

What about in the episode Magical Mystery Cure? When Vinyl was watching Fluttershy fail at making them laugh, she started to laugh with the other ponies when they saw spike dancing. Laughter might be more of an action rather than actual words, but still, sound had to have come out of her mouth for that to happen. And well there wasn't an assigned voice to her in that moment, it still implies that she laughed. Whether or not she was heard doesn't really matter, or does it?
Some mute people can laugh. I've met a mute person but she could laugh.
Also, the new episode "No Second Prances" shed some more light on this theory, because Vinyl is one of the three ponies that Twilight tries to use to replace Trixie as Starlight's friend, & Vinyl doesn't talk the entire episode!

I dont know if anybody else has noticed this but you can see an OC, Button Mash in Slice of Life. You first see him when Vinal crashes into the first group of ponies, Button Mash ends up landing right next to Vinal. I've always wondered why no MLP channels have talked about.
Button Mash isn't an OC. He's a background pony that had a couple (very well done) fan animations made about him, so he got really popular. Granted, him appearing in Slice of Life is probably a nod to said fan animations, but still, he's not an OC.

I like to go with the explanation provided by the fanfic Aftermath of the Games, which states that Vinyl's vocal cords never developed properly (hence her inability to speak).

Ok, let's be honest. NoWacking started the Vinyl Scratch voice, because we didn't know HOW Vinyl sounded like in the first place. The MLP community would be shredded if it was a different voice.
It's kind of interesting I think to have a mute DJ. It kinda lets her show her voice in how she re-mixes music, letting the music speak for her. Plus, how many mute characters can you count in cartoons? I bet you could count it on one hand
To me, Vinyl is just the type of pony who only speaks when the plot requires it. Because she's a minor character in the show, she doesn't need to talk, but in fan-made stuff where she's a main character, it's more important that she speaks.

in mlp season 6 episode 8 on the last song, when the characters are singing, it shows Vinyl and Octavia, Octavia is singing, but Vinyl is just moving her head along the music

im extremely late by commenting this but she was actually talking to fluttershy in the everfree movie in the background, pretty early in the movie too when they just got their tents. its when applejack and rarity are talking and you can see them clearly when applejack says “just as long as you dont put me in one of your fancy-pants outfits” now we only saw her mouth moving and we couldn’t hear it but she was clearly having a conversation with fluttershy

now I'd like to add this. i had a friend how he rarely talked enough that i almost thought he had a vocal condition that makes him lose his voice much easier, but to my surprise he just didn't like to talk often, even at first, when i would ask him questions i thought he could be a mute. my point is maybe Vinyl isn't a pony of many words.
I do have evidence that Vinyl can talk. And its in the Equestria Girls Friendship Games movie. If go towards the end of the film and you look at the scene with dean Cadence Sci-Twi talking on the stairs in front of Canterlot High. You will see in the background Vinyl talking to Lemon Zest and her mouth is moving showing she can talk.
TheConcertCruizer no just because someone’s mouth is moving does not mean they are speaking they could be mouthing the words because lots of mute people who can’t do sign language mouth the words they are saying unless she as been mute from birth which I find unlikely also If they wanted it to be a big deal she is talking they would have made a barely audible

there are various episodes as well as in some parts of EG3 where she is talking to other ponies. but i think we havent heard her physically speak yet is due to her not having a voice actress yet

If you pay attention in the Camp Everfree movie, you can see Vinyl moving her lips in the background....
I think that in the next episode that Vinyl appears in, they should have a character throw something at her. People who can't speak can still use their voices, and I'm sure a vocal response is like to come out of Vinyl. If this happens, we'll have a small reveal of what her voice sounds like.
The 'Wanna make something of it?' cover is a direct reference to an almost identical More Than Meets The Eye cover. :)
my theori is that she got in to a fight when she was a kid and got punched so hard in the throat that she went mute thus her trying to express her self through her music thus getting her cuttie mark and the one that hit her was octavia , octavia feeling bad for taking one of the most presios things to a pony such as the voice feeling in debt to her and growing to gether every day

I looked back on the episode log to figure out which big thing he was talking about…it was Crusaders Of The Lost Mark. That episode came out the day before this episode was posted. I remember all the live react videos from that episode. Good times.
In the background of some of the EG movies, you can see her talking, her mouth is moving, but I still don't count this as proof cause it's EG, and it could have been an error

According to a convention panel with M. A. Larson (summary here), she was originally going to have a speaking role in "Slice of Life", but "they told him she doesn't talk", so this seems pretty confirmed.

Actually, I saw in one of the episodes that she wasn't actually mute, in the background of "A Heart's Warning Tail" when Starlight Glimmer finally goes in and joins the party you can see DJ Pon-3 talking to Octavia with mostly her mouth so she's not mute at all we just never hear her speak.
