    SURVEY: docs.google.co...
Years ago, a student did a college presentation about the physics of the Sonic Rainboom. Now, a younger student is doing a RUclips video about similar physics and similar rainbooms. What's the truth behind this light-shattering phenomenon? Watch and learn.
"Explained" is a series produced by Cutie Mark Laboratories that takes questions and phenomena related to Equestria, and uses science and logic to find an answer for them.

Personally I like to think that the blast was caused by her channeling her inner magic, making the blast destructive enough to shatter the rocks. Could this mean that she has the ability to harness the full magic of a unicorn, and then form a horn/magical abilities to become the next alicorn?

Hats off to the student who had the nerve to be able to stand ip there and do a presentation on the sonic rainboom using advanced maths! If he got ribbed for watching the show afterwards ima gather as much of the fandom as possible, throw paint on them 'till they look like a rainbow, then get as many bronies to buck them down everytime they got up, video ALL of this and humiliate them over youtube!
    Do NOT inderestimate the bronies!

    • @booleanbrony5696
      @booleanbrony5696 10 лет назад +3

I will not "inderestimate" how petty and ridiculous some bronies choose to be. though I know those were empty threats at people you do not know I am sure your message didn't come out of "love and tolerance" to those who are not bronies. Sure you are saying you don't like bullies but do you really think your making a big difference by talking about acting like an amazing ass to anyone who acts like a minor ass? you think it would embarrass them but if you really did that you would just embarrass yourself and put a very negative light on the fandom while giving anti-bronies a reason to dislike us.
I entered the fandom knowing there would be people who didn't understand it and I have been on the internet long enough to know there are haters for every topic, but acting like a brat in youtube comments won't help it, the best way to show the haters is to not let them bother you. if you have people bothering you wether it be online or in real life you should avoid them as best you can and if necessary let someone with higher authority deal with the problem, but your just feeding the trolls if you think talking about violence and humiliation is the best way to deal with it.

    • @Gallaelwyd
      @Gallaelwyd 10 лет назад

Boolean Brony Alright ok ok, yes there was a typo but no need to call me an ass and a brat! I have a quick temper, and so do other bronies so of course they were empty but, my main point of the comment was to simply congratulate the student. Plus the whole "love and tolerance" you cant do both at the same time. If you have to tolerate them then you can't truly love them, however, having said that, i have to tolerate my friends some times (they don't know im a brony) but when im not tolerating I love them (as friends) but thats just the way the world bounces! Although you make a good point of comments like mine giving a bad name and i'm sorry, i've never thrown the first punch in a fight and i never will (in a physical fight that is, this is the only first punch ive thrown on the internet).

XD I actually use "love and tolerate" in quotes for that very reason as well as the fact that it was actually a term created to mock bronies, it just got so popular that bronies started picking it up in a non ironic way lol
the kid was awesome but I tire of posts like that or real life people talking about others in that way, I know its a way to vent or act tough but it just makes me feel uncomfortable when people say those things XD sorry I was a bit harsh just wanted to get my point across

Actually, there are a few reasons why this explanation does not make sense. First, a Rainbow only appears from certain angles when the sunlight and the water droplets that scatter the light into a Rainbow are in the right positions. For the "Cutiemark Chronicles" Sonic Rainboom to be seen from above, below, and several locations around all at once, there would have to be multiple sources of light. Further, when Rainbow fails to pull of the Rainboom, in "Sonic Rainboom" she does not just fail to do it, she is physically hurled backward from the point where she had been closest to doing it. My thought is that, in Equestria, there is a Layer of Magic Layered over the air. It is kind of suffused through it, serving as something thicker than air for pegasai to push their wings against to fly. I believe this is also what illuminates when unicorns use their magic. They are manipulating this energy field. A sonic rainboom and the resulting rainbow ring and streaks would then be the result of a Pegasus going so fast that they gather a small wave of this power in front of them and then punch through it with raw speed, creating a massive shockwave and light show that radiates with it.

I think that everypony has a natural magic in them that manifests in different (but not always equal) ways. (earth ponies always have strength/ground speed, i'm talking about other magic)
Twilight: increased magical abilities. (or the ability to absorb magic by proximity like the rainboom)
Applejack: fast plant growing powers (the apple trees always have apples on them)
Fluttershy: the ability to talk to animals and the stare
Pinkie pie: the pinkie sense and the fourth wall awareness
Rarity: the finding of gems (yeah it sucks but i said theyre not equal, also twilight saw rarity use her spell and sub-consciously absorbed and learned the spell with no negative effects to rarity's magical abilities)
Rainbow Dash: she has her iconic rainbow trail and if she goes fast enough she can send out a huge surge of that rainbow magic called the sonic rainboom.
if we watch spitfire very closely in hurricane fluttershy, she does a sonic boom very easily but no rainbow. and as pinkie pie said "A sonic boom and a rainbow happen all at once" since there is only one speed you can sonic boom at it's likely that only rainbow dash can make her sonic booms rainbow like. this theory also explains why twilight went into the avatar state when the rainboom got close to her. she took in that magical energy and used it to make her a skilled unicorn as a child where ponies without this ability like sweetie belle find it hard to use their magic without sufficient practice. as for the cake twins, this theory might work but i just assume that a writer got drunk as hell when writing that part.
please comment back, i love your videos, and feel free to use this for a theory in the future

My thoughts on the matter: Perhaps magic, like sound, has a finite velocity. As Rainbow nears that speed, magic begins to collect in front of her, just like a building sonic boom. Judging from the effect of her failed rainboom attempt, I think it collects in the form of a force field. (You should not be able to bounce off your own mach cone.) When she shatters that field, by traveling even faster, I think the rainbow we're seeing is literally raw magical energy, the magic equivalent of a sonic boom.
She's able to do a slower one later, because her rainboom training has by now given her more magic to work with, and better control over it.
This would also explain Twilight Sparkle's 'rainboom' in season 4 episode 2. She can't build enough speed to set one off, like Rainbow can, so instead she just releases a crapload of her own magic, to imitate the magic boom.

  • @Stonehawk

My hypothesis was that the electromagnetic manipulation magic (electrokinesis) that Pegasi use to kick lightning out of clouds and also attract/move masses of air also creates a field around them that protects them from drag friction and soft tissue pressure damage.
Notice that IN the episode, "The Sonic Rainboom," you actually do see electrical arcing as she approaches the barrier.
When air becomes superheated, its conductivity increases drastically. Thus, enabling it to better maintain an electric charge. With an electric charge being held, the charged particles can be maintained in an electromagnetic field, for instance plasma in a Tokamak fusion reactor.
The threshold of the sonic rainboom represents a sudden jump in conductivity when the appropriate temperature is reached on the exterior of her pressure shell, enabling a drastically reduced power requirement. This reduction results in a brief "overflow" which triggers two effects:
Firstly, as much of the power as possible is siphoned into acceleration, thus bursting her into a much, much higher rate of speed (10x boost as mentioned).
Secondly, the quantity of power not able to be absorbed by the thaumic motivator fields of her wings has to be disbursed immediately... and THIS is what starts the rainbow arc phenomenon itself:
It's an Electromagnetic Pulse spreading perpendicular to the line of velocity, carrying within it a highly pressurized and contained ring of charged air. the vast density fluctuations between the contained, pressurized, charged air and the surrounding atmosphere results in a lensing effect that refracts the light into its component wavelengths e.g. the visible spectrum of color.
The rainbow trail is a channel of this atmospheric density disparity carved through by her charged air pressure shell's wake.
Now, how does she manage a sonic rainboom WITHOUT the speed increase?
With mastery of the skill, she's able to direct 100% of the excess electrokinetic aura charge into her pressure shell's power dump deliberately INSTEAD of putting it into her velocity.

Personally, I suspect it is more just Rainbow Dash's personal magical ability. We see the Wonderbolts use magical trails behind them and Lightningdust does it as well. Apparently Pegasi use magical energy to propel themselves forward at greater speeds and in Rainbow's case produce powerful spectral events (especially when it is just for show and not pure speed). Similar to Lightningdust and her electric trail.

My thoughts on sonic rainbooms are:
They are just sonic booms, but since it was in the "legends" it was supposed to be spectacular, so they added rainbows, also, it implys the magic of the pegasi, as we see are returned to them by Twilight during the Season 4 finale.

Sonic's name means "speed of sound". So he's able to run faster than the speed of sound. However, he can't do that without damaging the environment he's protecting. And without running into things at that speed. Rainbow Dash is lucky to fly without needing to go super. Sonic can only break the sound barrier when he's in the air or in a wide open space in one of the enemies' lair. So really, sonic and rainbow dash are one in the same with rainbow dash having an advantage over sonic.

    • @irishuisman1450
      @irishuisman1450 6 лет назад +1

To be fair, Sonic has broken the sound barrier on multiple occasions without the slightest sign of straining, while RD needed gravity to assist her. Sonic even broke the sound barrier while launching himself upwards in the Sonic cd intro (it's pretty freaking obvious when you know it's there), so I think it's safe to assume Sonic is faster than RD. Not to say the latter is slow, far from it actually, but she's just a little bit slower than the person (or, well, hedgehog) who is often referred to as the fastest thing alive

Actually a Pegasus/Alicorn OC doesn't have to have racing as a special talent for them to logically pull of a version of the Sonic Rainbow and have people accept it. Think about it many ponies have done things that has nothing to do with their Mark. Twilight can ace exams and her Mark clearly isn't a book and that's because her Mark was a symbolising her destiny and not specifically her special talent(s). Just a thought also if someone has an OC that doesn't have racing as a talent BUT has a good enough back-story as to why and how they pulled off a Rainboom variant then I think it should be accepted as well.

I have to say a word.
Rainbow Dash might have actually done the sonic boom, but also she was spraying water is a ginormus rainbow, slowing her speed. She pulls it off by accelerating quickly in 2 seconds before she hits her target.

  • @TheCrazyPhoenix
    @TheCrazyPhoenix 10 лет назад +1

The cause of the sonic rain-boom is due to the shear speed that RD travels at, and the extreme densities of the equestrian atmosphere, the compression cone around her head actually causes the air to fuse together by nuclear fusion. This then emits many photons of light at high velocities from the point of fusion, which is what we see as the sonic rain-boom. This also explains the explosion, high winds, and the total destruction of Ponyville animated in "double rain-boom".
    Good theory though.

The problem about this tho is that you have to see which one travels faster. Since light travels faster than sound you have to take into consideration that the light reached fluttershy faster than rainbow got to rarity so when fluttershy yelled it would be reflecting of the rainboom that was caused. This means that the time would balance out with the light vs the sound ratio if she yelled when she saw it which would be slower than the time it would take to hear her while rainbow is accelerating through the sky.

Best theory that doesn't bring magic into the discussion (apart from weather manipulation of course, but that's explicitly canonical) that I've seen yet. I however prefer the explanation where the visible part of the Rainboom is a shockwave of harmonic energy, separate and distinct from the more traditional Sonic Boom, which spreads so fast and with so little color that you most likely wouldn't be able to see it with the naked eye.
This is partly because that means Rainbow doesn't necessarily have to be traveling at supersonic speeds (thus giving a good reason for why she doesn't regularly do the crazy speed-based accomplishments of Sonic, even IF his speed is limited to about... 1.2 times sound?), yet still leaves enough room for her to POTENTIALLY match those levels if given enough motivation (like, say, meeting the Blue Blur in question). It ALSO means that, depending on how that harmonic shockwave acts, that differently patterned Rainbooms would be possible by different individuals, assuming enough speed and a reaction to the natural harmonic energies, of course (Sonic might or might not produce one under those conditions, but a sufficiently speedy Fluttershy definitely would).

If water works that beautifully in Equestria like it does in real life, why do they need rainbow juice for regular rainbows? Probably it's more related to her mane and tail messing with something, like how the Wonderbolts costume allows them all to have those stormy cloud streaks. So basically any other pony going sound speed wouldn't get a rainbow, but something else if any trail and/or "boom" at all.

Information from: Game Theory's video on Sonic's true speed, Gnnogin's counterargument of said Game Theory video, this video, the actual episode, and the presentation.
Rainbow Dash can move at Mach 10. But how destructive is that?
A Sonic boom can cause massive issues for the environment, such as destruction of trees, destruction of homes, destruction of ponies, and more. Sonic doesn't go to mach 1 because he's worried of the environment being destroyed. As Modern Dashie, she can practically destroy half of the globe! Bye, Equestria.

Well we also need to take into account that this IS a world where magic is just as much a force as is gravity and is prevalent in almost every aspect of the MLP world (especially in one where most of the rules of this magic have not been definitely been laid down and set in stone.) What if magic also comes into play here? For all we know, there could be some kind of magical quality to the Sonic Rainboom. After all, just like we've seen with the Elements of Harmony, the rainbow that shoots from the Elements has a power stone (Discord). Perhaps rainbows are a representation of the strongest magic in Equestria, and that could explain why the boulder Rarity found broke in half with the heralding of the Sonic Rainboom, despite it being created many miles away. I do like your theory about Rainbow Dash collecting water molecules to create the rainbow effect rather than shattering the light spectrum. After all, Rainbow IS a weather pony who busts clouds for a living and spent the day in Cloudsdale, not to mention the water molecules in the atmosphere and the additional clouds she ran into.

I like to think it's done by a heavy dose of pegisi magic, possibly RD actually making a burst of raw magic that holds onto the rainbow affect from the water drops. this also would explain the rainbow trail that RD can make, as some of the raw magic is still coming off of her.
You sould do something on the nature of magic between the three tribes, and how it manifest differently between them.

all ponies have magic, although only unicorns heve the parts and minds to utilize and command it. so rainbow dash collected more water than originally thought, because she unconsicously developed a way to use her inner magic. which she actually has a lot of. ponies with high magic get special hair styles. like pinkie pie and her deflating hair, and dash with her rainbow hair, the princesses with their wavy hair and growth of extra colors in their hair.

  • @AugustoDaere

first want to say that I do not speak English very well, so excuse me for any grammatical error.
According to my knowledge, all we see is the result of reflection or refraction of light on objects, so all we see is because there is a ray of light that strikes the object, as a result it reflects(or refracts) that ray of light changing color information contained initially it so then our eyes capture that lightning and create the image of the object according to these new color information (physics classes about light is important for my work)
However, everything can collide and change this light information, even air can change this information for color that any human can't see, so I do them the question: Does Rainbow Dash, at the time of Sonic Rainboom, can change the reflection and the refraction of light from molecules(or something) around her in order to create such an effect without magic?
I'm not a scientist, so I leave this question so you can contemplate new variables for that matter.

I thought for Rainbow Dash to pull a rainboom off she'd have to go so fast to break the sound barrier...because in one episode Rainbow Dash is with Fluttershy practicing a rainboom or something and she tries to do it but before she bounces back you see a white barrier and with the force of her wings bouncing back and hitting the floor is going to do a LOT of Damage...and you see the barrier multiple times 1. When she was a fillie, earning her cutie mark 2. Destroying a barn house for Apple Jack (i think) 3. Canterlot Wedding 4. episode Sonic Rainboom (saving Rarity). But the thing is she does it 5 times in the whole show (yes i have been keeping track including when she was a filly) and if it's a legend why is it so common to Rainbow Dash? And another thing if it's a legend only the greatest of heroes should be able to do it but turns out Rainbow Dash (who isn't always our hero it's most of the time Twilight and friends) can do it and if it was a legend why can Twilight do it as an alicorn? Well we all know she could do more extraordinary things when she gets given extra alicorn magic (from Luna Celestia and Candence/Cadensa) and how does that effect her wings it should only effect her horn but she can do it other times...such as the first summer sun celebration as Twilight as a princess she does a rainboom but as her cutie mark instead of a circle...

I think that the rainboom in Cutie Mark Chronicles might have been as powerful as it was since Rainbow Dash got her cutie mark at that time. Maybe cutie marks are capable of releasing large amounts of energy or something like that while they are being earned. Please let me know what you think of this RLYoshi.

I think the reason the sonic rainboom can shatter rock is because of the force of the wind from the speed of rainbow dash and the reason it went so far is also due to speed and the fact the wind could have carried the moisture

Maybe the water turned to ice due to a the suction of air cause by the aerial stunt and the shrapnel hit the rock? I can't really remember all the terms but I do know that water has some interesting properties when it comes to speed pressure and heat.

  • @OmniShiraOfficial

Well, to break this down even more and maybe shine some light on this (see what I did there?), considering when Rainbow Dash creates a Sonic Rainboom she breaks the sound barrier. In doing so, couldn't it be possible that when she created the "boom" part that the vibrations from the explosion cause the collected water droplets to move at different angles and reflect light just well enough for everypony to see? If this hypothesis is even remotely true, creating a strong enough Sonic Rainboom to cause a rainbow ring for all to see could be possible. And as for the shattering of the stone, my hypothesis for that is that the vibrations being as close to the ground as they were from the explosion that it caused the rock to fall apart. RL_Yoshi, what is your take on this? If you add these points to your conclusion and facts about the Rainboom, would your final say on the Rainboom change?

How that rock could've been smashed was probably by the sonic boom that passed by or the air and water molecules traveling at extreme speeds. I have however came up with a theory that dash doesn't achieve Mach 10 because this would result in her body looking like spaghetti. I would assume she goes as fast as an f-14 or 15

so.. i have a "theory"that goes with this too, twi did her sonic boom to, correct? so that must of been water droplets too, people say that the sonic rainboom name goes after dashie, but no it isn't! the sonic rainboom was a thousand years old and rd is only, as in other videos, atleast only 18, since its pointed out by RLyoshi that the boom is made of water, rain, as in water, goes together, so the rain in it goes with the water droplets! not rds name!

Coming from a non-magical standpoint, given it was a sonic boom, the resulting shockwave would cause, not only hearible noise, but also a mix of infrasound and ultrasound to be emitted. That means that the rock cracking in half was mostly the infrasound hitting the right frequency to rupture the right weak points in the rock. Also in ranges for character distance, its pinkie and fluttershy, then twilight and rarity, then finally applejack for just being able to see it and not hear it or feel its effects. Im just stating what i infer. I glean knowledge off of all the science shows i watch and have no idea if im getting the right facts in line.

So with what this theory states then Sonic is faster then Rainbow as he can travel around the world within seconds, i can't say if he can go at lightspeed but he has been shown to break the sound barrier easier then Rainbow because he is more used to high speed movement and he doesn't need gravity to assist him in breaking the sound barrier.

I like your scientific ideas about R.D.'s sonic rainbooms, but I found a hole in your final conclusion. The higher you go in the atmosphere, the colder & less humid. If R.D.'s rainboom required condensation to pull off, that would mean that most of the condensation would HAVE to be gathered at low altitudes, seconds before the rainboom occurs. This works in favor of the speed & nuke types of rainbooms, but doesn't for the third type. R.D. was flying upwards before the rainboom occured at the wedding. If she gathered condensation before taking off, most of it would be lost before the time of the explosion. Which makes the visual type of rainboom physically impossible unless it was going downwards.

I think it's because RD is a mobian because she is the only one that can do it and everyone in Sonic's worlds has some way of going faster then the speed of sound and has the bone strength to do it. I think you should do an episode about it. for all the questions you might have. her body adapted to equestrian magic but her bones didn't.

this would be impossible to do in reality, to fly with such a speed would literally burn you because of the friction... and the shape and weight of the body just plays against the fact of this being possible, i could be doing a list you wouldn't even be able to scroll at the end of facts that doesn't support the possibility of this to happen.

But it said that Rainbow Dash was the first Pegasus IN HISTORY to pull off a Sonic Rainboom. If it is what you described, any particularly fast Pegasus could do it, such as any Wonderbolt, or even someone like Lightning Dust, or possibly even Gilda, assuming it has nothing to do with Pegasus magic. If it's really that simple, why has no one else been able to do it?

  • @OzDerpyEntertainment

there is also a natural Phenomena that happens in our world that would help explain this. this Phenomena is the rarest one out there. it makes a circular rainbow in the sky. the reason it is so rare is because it requires "sunlight entering horizontally-oriented, flat, hexagon ice crystals through a vertical side face and leaving through the near horizontal bottom face" it also requires the sun to be above 58 degrees in the sky. the speed of rainbow dash could flaten/ form these ice plates then when the sonic boom goes off it shotts the plates outwards (Asuming they fly flat like a frisbe)
and you cant say that this picture of the Circumhorizontal arc doesn't look like part of a rainboom: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Circumhorizontal_arc.jpg
