Sunset Shimmer has to be older than Twilight because she was a former students to Celestia. Now recall that Celestia took Twilight under her wing when she was very young. if Twilight and Shimmer were both students of Celestia at the same time, I'm sure they would have met at some point (you, to learn friendship and all that magic.)
I don't think Equestria and Equestria Girls are identical when it comes to ages. I think it's pretty clear that the pony counterparts are adults, and have been for a while. They aren't in school anymore, and they are well established in their jobs. They clearly aren't teenagers.
"adult" is a huge word m8, im pretty sure mane 6 (ponies) just graduated, after all, we saw twiilight stil studying at the beginning of the series, they may be 18-21 at max.

Hmm the more I think about it, the more it seems to make more sense that the mane 6 are in their 20s cause they all seem to live on their own and have established careers. I'd say Fluttershy's younger brother would at least have to be in his early 20s for his family and friends to have the attitude they did about his lifestyle and it looked to me like him and FS were at the most about 5 years apart. Then again, Equestria could have completely different rules where adulthood starts at 15 or so rather than at 18-20 like in real life.
I think that in America, hard cider is always alcoholic and soft cider has added spices. No spices were added during the manufacturing of the Apple family's cyder and the end product always appeared carbonated, this is the result of the cider being fermented. From what I heard, soft cider is never carbonated/fermented, at least not deliberately. The soft cider can appear carbonated after about a week in storage while Apply family cider is carbonated/fermented immediately which is the case for hard cider.

You missed a bit of key info concerning Sunset Shimmer: She ran away to the human world before Twilight even got her cutie mark. There's no way they are the same age, Sunset is a fair bit older, I believe she had a good few years (doing research and adjusting to the new lifestyle) before she got into the school (pretending to be younger than she is). Also, when Twilight gets her cutie mark she's applying for a specialized school (middle?) but I suspect she would have skipped a grade or two to even be considered for an exam. Flutters just has a different body type, the same as Snails. My age guesses: TS, RD = 18, PP = 19, AJ, FS = 20, RA = 21
ik this video is old, but if you've seen the episode "where the apple lies" (season 6) you can see Applejack as a teenager and she has the same height and appearance as Fluttershy when she got her cutiemark I know that we can't determine the age of a person by height, but in my opinion is Fluttershy the oldest one

But Fluttershy is one more month older than her, but born the same year. So, I don't know math that good XD. Since Fluttershy is one year older than Pinkie, not month, YEAR. That is 1982 + 1. Which equals 1983 when Pinkie was born. So Pinkie is 20. *AppleJack* This quality spells maturity to me. Because of this, I am placing her as most likely to be the eldest. Not to mention it would make sense that she went through puberty at an older age than her friends, considering the Apple family are all notoriously late bloomers.

Another thing to note is that we know Sunset Shimmer's been in the human world for at least 4 years. But we also know that the Crystal Empire (where the portal is located) disappeared a thousand years ago. It doesn't add up. And don't say she was banished after it returned. We know Sunset was Celestia's student before Twilight and the Crystal Empire re-appeared during Twilight's time as Celestia's student. The only explanation would be that time passes differently in either world. One year in the human world might add up to about 250 years in Equestria, which still doesn't make sense, as that would mean that Twilight spent 750 Equestrian days in there (over two years) and we can't expect to have the rest of the mane 6 spending all that time in the Crystal Empire.
RED Soldier Forget my previous post. Upon further reading I noticed Twilight as a filly in the background of the comic. So moving the mirror to the Crystal Kingdom had to have happened when Twilight was a filly. Which would make Twilight about 8 to 10 years younger than Sunset. (It seems that the show, movie, and comics all contradict each other.)

hm... nope. This time you over looked a few aspects that keep your theory from staying afloat... Sunset and Twi being the same age doesn't work considering that Sunset has been Tia's former student. So she must already have left Equestria at the point in time Twi took her entry exam; that would imply that Sunset has only ben a filly, barely able to cast spells herself at this point. Assuming that she is actually a few years older than Twi is a rather safe bet. This would also explain a second error in your theory: if Sunset is 1-2 years younger then the remane 5 and in the senior year of highschool, how comes the Remane 5 are still in the same highschool? If she is as old as Twilight and if Twilight is younger then all her friends and if Sunset is already a Senior, Twilights friend should be even past their senior year themselves.

And that may or may not be true even with your theory and what I have heard (not have read yet) of the Equestria Girls Comic.
In the start of the show, twilight was still a student. It’s been years since then, so by the end they’re likely at least early 20’s. Speaking of, Twilight is a princess. Fluttershy has a sanctuary. Rainbow’s a wonderbolt. Rarity has a chain of boutiques. AJ just knows more than she did at the start, she’s still got a hat and a farm. And then there’s Pinkie, who’s... well, she’s Pinkie Pie complete with everything that entails- party planner... and baker(?) (I never could tell exactly what Pinkie did, and obviously that hasn’t changed.)
It was very clever to use Equestria Girls as a means to deduce how old they are. However, there are some holes in your theory that I would like to point out: *1.* As you can see at 5:19, it shows that Cherilee, the current Ponyville Schoolhouse teacher, was at the same age as Rarity when they were just fillies, whereas in the EG-reality, Cherilee was a teacher and Rarity was still a student. *2.* _Princess_ Celestia is over a thousand years old, while _Principle_ Celestia could not possibly be this old. *3.* In _FIENDship is Magic #3_, it shows that when the sirens was banished through the mirror a thousand years ago by Starswirl, they ended up in the modern era with their hoodies. This shows that not only that the EG-reality's timeline is completely inconsistent with the Ponyverse's, but even how the mirror transports subjects between worlds is time-warping.
Luther Barrett Applejack runs the farm with her family, including a grandmother and older brother. It's likely she doesn't run the farm so much as she just does most of the work on it. And Rarity running a fashion business as a late teen is entirely possible, especially with her talent for it.
Luther Barrett Actually, it is all likely. There are business owners that are in their early teens. Now do they run it? No. They have someone who runs it for them until they are old enough. Which is where I think Granny Smith and Big Mac comes in. I have no doubt in my mind that Big Mac is in his early to mid twenties, as it seems Big Mac doesn't seem that much older than AJ. But that aside, there are 14, 15 year olds that do have businesses of their own because they are that good.
How do you know that Twi is the same age as Sunset if Granny Smith is the same height as well. Many other ponies are also the same exact height, giving in to the fact that the same template is used for many people the ponies.
I think there are some things you messed up on. The characters in equestria girls do NOT match the ages of their pony counter parts, and just because sunset shimmer entered high school, doesn't necessarily mean she is the exact age as all of them, and it doesn't necessarily mean that the first thing she did when going to the 'human world' was enter high school. If we were to consider the comics as canon, they show sunset being at least a teen when she stopped studying with celestia, which would make sense. Twilight was EXTREMELY young when she became celestia's new pupil. For sunset to have been trained, then left, all before twilight, she would have been so young, it couldn't have been more then a child's tantrum. And I just don't think it realistic to think celestia would so easily abandon a child like that. So I think it is reasonable to assume that sunset shimmer is older by at least a few years, then twilight. Not to mention you can't really use height to measure age when it comes to a series that uses the same puppet base for nearly all ponies. ALL teen and adult ponies use nearly the exact same base, so are the same height. And equestia girls is no different. The ponies would have ranged in height and shape if they weren't made on flash puppets, but since they are they only look different in color, mane design, and eye shape. Twilight is slightly taller due to being an alicorn, and will continue to get taller while her friends will not. It doesn't matter how old they are, that is just how things work in this world. Not to say you don't make some good points, but even with the class thing, one thing to keep in mind is that even if rarity and apple jack were the same age, they may not be in the same class. Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo weren't in Apple Bloom's class until later, signifying they likely transferred. So I think it's safe to assume that there is not simply one class of ponies in ponyville.

It would make sense if Equestria Girls was later in the year, such as January. That would explain them all except Twilight, but I am pretty sure Twilight isn't 17.
I think the characters have no definite age. They were probably designed to seem like any age the viewer imagined them to be, as to improve the viewer experience. So, basically, their ages depend on what your perspective is.
The only one I agree with is Pinkie, Rainbow and Applejack's positions and Twilight's age. Well, kinda... I think Rarity is the oldest, seeing as how she was in the same class as Cheerilee who we've already saw a photo of in the 80's. Then I think it's Applejack, because she's old enough to run her own farm. After that, I think it's Twilight because we've seen her hang out with Cheerilee once or twice, and she's old enough to be a teacher. (I think.) Next is Fluttershy. She was a very tall filly, but that doesn't nessicarily mean that she's the oldest. I'm in a class of twenty seven, okay. I'm fifth tallest, but seventh youngest. That's got to mean something, right? Next, I think it's Pinkie Pie. She plans parties for Ponyville every single day! That's very hard work, but with her exciting personality, it's reasonable for her to be one of the youngest. Last but not least is Rainbow Dash. For one, would you really ask someone younger than you to plan your birthday party for you? Exactly. And second of all, why hasn't she become a Wonderbolt yet, after the countless amazing things she's done that's impressed Spitfire? Because she's too young! And with that said, I think both Rarity and Applejack are 18, Twilight is 17 - so I agree with the age you gave her, Fluttershy is 16 and both Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash are fifteen.

Height doesn't determine age. My friend is an older brother, yet he's shorter than me and his brother. Or, a popular example of the Mario Bros., Mario is the older brother, yet he's shorter than Luigi.
Akiractv I Think what he's trying to get at is most people who are older than you are taller but since we don't know since the show or the movie doesn't conferm the ages of the background characters and compare those to the main six. Like Applebloom and her friends for example, Applebloom act more mature although in some cases she doesn't so that'd put her around the ages 12 or 13, Sweetie Bell is like her too but in some aspects she worries like her sister so that'd put her around the same age of Applebloom if not younger so 11-12. Scootaloo on the other hand is daring and trying to empress Rainbow Dash, Normally when kids really like someone they try to empress them so that puts scootaloo at 9-10. There size comparison how ever......Well in the show its hard to tell, and in the movie it was hard to tell too so can't really do anything there but to me in the show, Scootaloo (minus her mane) looks shorter than Sweetie Bell. Applebloom and Sweetie Bell are around the same age so they'll be close to similar in height. idk why I focused on these three characters but there you go
Something else you should take into consideration- We all know Diamond Tiara had a Quinceanera, a celebration for *15 year old girls.* That means Diamond Tiara turned 15 around the day the CMC met. Diamond Tiara is roughly the same age as the CMC, so those *fillies* are around 15 years old.@RLYoshi , you should definitely make a part 2 to this video to add in this little tid bit!

Actually, using the MLP Annual 2013, it starts off with Sunset doing her mid-term magic test on Page 2, and later that day she took (and passed) the test we see Filly Twilight (before the Sonic Rainboom, as she's without Cutie Mark) with Cadence & Shining (presumably in their early-mid teens, and Cadence is otherwise babysitting Twilight) having a picnic lunch whilst Sunset is sitting studying at a bench nearby with Lyra & Minuette (Colgate) along with 3 other mares asking if she'd like to join them for lunch on Page 3. Page 9 shows Sunset (after what is presumably a few months at least during the time-skip shown on Page 5) stepping out of the portal in the statue's pedestal on Earth with a flyer for the 'Sundance CHS Yearbook' in the final panel, hinting that it's nearing the end of the school year when she first arrives on Earth. Page 10 starts the flashbacks to the Human-Mane 5 meeting and becoming friends as Freshman (9th Grade, 14-15). Page 17 shows them in Homeroom on their first day with Trixie as a fellow student as Harshwhinny as their teacher. On Page 19 we see Babs Seed (and her sister Sunflower Seed) who seems to be about Applejack's age, maybe a bit older, whilst on Equestria Babs is about the age of the CMC (who seem to be around 12 in EqG). Page 29 shows Silver Spoon & Diamond Tiara (who are about the same age as the CMC in FiM & EqG) walking with Rarity who seems to be about 3-4 inches taller than them (about right for a 2-3 year age gap), though unless CHS is run more as a Years/Grade 7-12 (like here in Australia) instead of 9-12 (as-is in USA), they'd either have to be advanced for their ages or CHS is more a Middle School & High School merged together to run Years/Grades 5(6)-12.

Out of curiosity, how technologically developed is Equestria? We've seen the FlimFlam Brother's machine, which included crushers, pistons, colorful lights, a vacuum, a conveyor belt, etc (powered by magic). We've seen plows used by Earth ponies. And while it may not exactly work with this, Pegasi have created Rainbows, Lightning, etc. which means we can assume electromagnetic fields have been developed. We've also seen sewing machines, whatever Twilight tried to use to observe Pinkie Pie's Pinkie Sense, cannons, and DJ booths. However, I have never seen anyone use a pen, microwave, television, or otherwise. Is there a reason why, or is it just that technological advancement is scattered or something like that? Or rather, is it just because... well... because why not?

I can count multiple numbers of candles on the cake, depending on angles and assuming all candles are equal distance from each other. Edit: This, as you said, doesn't really matter, anyway. Personally, I count 35 candles, and that almost coincides with the age of Ashleigh Ball, who voices AJ and RD. Personally, I wonder (in general) about pony's ages in this show. Nothing seems to coincide with any laws of our normal non-EQG world. I'm not sure if age has anything to do with how ponies look, other than the five seeming life stages. (infant, [Flurry Heart] young pony, [Crusaders and classmates] scrawny teenager, [young Fluttershy, young Applejack] healthy adult, [Mane 6 and most background ponies] and old-age. [Granny Smith]) I have seen six seasons of MLP, and so far I haven't seen the Crusaders age at all, nor have I really seen the Cake infants grow, either. I wouldn't be surprised if Rainbow Dash actually was 35, 41, whatever, though. Even in our world, the physical appearance of animals doesn't change much between maturity and old age. Our family had a malamute husky, and between ages 3-15, she looked the same. I wouldn't be surprised if in the MLP world, ponies don't really age very much physically between their "teenage" and "old-age" years. So it doesn't seem much of a stretch to me that Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie are one year apart, and other characters can be much older or younger. When we first meet Twilight in s1e1, she seems to be near the end of her school career, whether you consider Celestia's school for gifted [x-men] students everything including college is tomayto tomahto to me. I wouldn't be surprised if Twilight was in her 20's when we first saw her. Nor would I be surprised if Pinkie Pie was 3 years old when she left the farm. (Remember, we're talking about ponies, not people. In our world, animals typically mature in a very short time, then stay there for a number of years. A foal is on its feet and running with its mother usually within an hour after its born. It takes us humans months or years to get on our feet.) When it comes to age vs physical size, look at Snips and Snails. They're best friends, and usually best friends aren't very far apart in age. Snips is short and small. Snails is skinny and tall. Mal nourishment or genetics? Maybe. But we also have the examples of Mr. and Mrs. Cake. Mr. Cake is skinny, even though he is a full-grown adult. He is also very active with his deliveries for the business that he and Mrs. Cake run together, yet all that exercise doesn't seem to have built up his muscles. Then there's also Bulk Biceps, who is the direct opposite. Also, Applejack had the scrawny teenager look in "Where the Apple Lies." She turned out to be one of the strongest, if not the strongest, ponies in the mane six, and her healthy adult appearance is similar to that of the other ponies in the mane six. So I don't automatically think that a pony's physical appearance is based on age, except for infants and old-aged ponies.
Yeah, this was probably a false conclusion due to the reasoning, but I still at least have a headcanon they're no younger than late teens and no older than early or mid-20s.
Being able to drink doesn't help because legal drinking ages are different around the world and even just in North America. Some parts of Canada have it at 18, others have it at 19, and I think in the US it changes between states but hovers around 20.
***** The legal drinking age across the US is 21. Because apparently the federal government isn't allowed to set laws like this (I'm not a Constitution buff), they said "If you states don't raise the age from 18 to 21, we'll stop giving you money to pave your roads." So they all raised the age to 21, though Puerto Rico still has it at 18.

I really have been enjoying your videos as I just stumbled across them while browsing RUclips. It's nice to see a logical, non-biased viewpoint on things. This allows for a neutral standing where it's literally impossible for anyone to argue, or become offended (unless they're just shit disturbers). I'm not a social justice warrior, but it's just really refreshing to not become extremely stressed out just by watching a theory video. When people become hysterical, it makes everyone else hysterical and it's just really unpleasant. Honestly almost every other Brony on RUclips is just some asshole who thinks they're better than everyone else. This is really nice.
Taking the whole series into account now that it is over, if you assume that ponies have the same age of majority as humans, Rainbow Dash's minimum age post-Pinkie Pride is 19. Her parents weren't aware of her joining the Wonderbolts, meaning that she waited that extra year to be able to do it without their involvement. Then, she ages up to 19 in Pinkie Pride. In The Cutie Re-Mark, Rainbow, Pinkie and Maud are seen as part of Equestria's military forces, fighting Sombra's army. Thus, Pinkie must be a legal adult by that point (or one year below that age). Maud is Pinkie's *older* sister, so she is at minimum one pony-pregnancy-length older than Pinkie. Limestone is older than Maud, Marble is younger than Pinkie. Irrelevant to Mane 6 ages, but cool to work out.
Ok... Even though EQG is cannon, I don't really think it can be a reliable source of estimating age. The mane 6 in ponyville all have their own occupations and are likely adult age. Furthermore, in EQG, it can be assumed that the CMC are about freshmen age, and I highly doubt that Applejack is only 3 years older than Applebloom, as in the pony universe, Applebloom seems to be in either elementary or middle school, and Applejack is an adult.
Soo. I was thinking... then, how old are the cmc? If EQG is indeed canon, then, seeing as the CMC goes to school i.e. canterlot high, then they must be freshmen, which is equivalent to year 9 in Australia, or stage 5, or the mid-High school stage, where they would be ages 14-15. (I am Australian, so ignore me if I am blathering out crap at this point forwards) But! Looking at what sort of environment they learn in as ponies, they seem far too young to be ages 14-15. In fact, they appear more primary school stage, based on how their school environment is. What's possible is that if, following the Australian school style of primary then high school, then they may be in year 7, aged 12 or 13. To me, this seems most likely, if not younger because there are schools that go K(kindergarten)-12. But consider that AJ is 19. It appears that big mac was much older than AJ when she left. So, wouldn't it appear very likely that AJ would be born close to Applebloom instead of a gap of potentially 7 years? From what I gather, Big Mac was potentially in his early teens when AJ left (see how he's not as large as an adult horse but not nearly small enough to be considered prepubescent?) his awkward height and gangly limbs may also make him appear that he is somewhat in the middle of puberty. therefore, I gather Big Mac would be about 13-15 when AJ left. I assume AJ would be about 10 at that point then. If Big Mac was 15 when AJ left, AJ was 10, and she looks like how applebloom and the cmc is now. shorter legs, smaller body, etc etc. So if AJ is not 19, then applebloom being 11-13 isn't much of a stretch, meaning that big mac must be around 24 now. BUT! A little googling tell me that if ponies in equestria have approximately 3 times the lifespan of the average horse (30 years), then their fertility must last 3 times as long. if their optimal fertility is 7 years, 7 X 3 = 21, then yes, it may be possible that the Big Mac, AJ, and Applebloom are born so far apart. Especially when you look at another example of two siblings with a large age gap: Sweetiebelle and Rarity :)
The thing is that the Equestria Girls universe is not canon compared to the real one; things that go on there, including character ages and traits, are not the same as in the regular pony universe.
I assume to my best calculations in ages of the main six are in their mid-teens, we have some likely hood evidence from Fluttershy saying to Pinkie Pie "I'm a year older than you" if you've played the MLP pony game found in play store for both (Android, IOS) if you tap on Twilight she says "Number 16" this might seem odd to some people but if you stop and think about it, normally people stay in education until the ages of 18-21 depending on their course, Princess Celestia said "You can continue your studies here in ponyville" some indication Twilight is indeed 16 by Season 1 standards. So the question is how old are they?, they don't have canon ages it's only speculation from the fans so I'd say. Twilight was 16 in Season 1, we can see the seasons change in MLP but we only see Twilight, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie's birthdays in the show so them characters were possibly the youngest. After Twilight's birthday she turns 17, Pinkie Pie is the youngest in the group so I'll say Season 1 16 after her birthday she is the same age as Twilight and Rainbow Dash is the same as them two. It's pretty obvious Apple Jack, Rarity and Fluttershy are the oldest within the group, Fluttershy is a year older than Pinkie Pie that makes her 18 so is Rarity because the age in order to run a business in the industry is 18 years of age. Apple Jack is the big sister of Apple Bloom who is 14 so that makes Apple Jack at least 18, Sunset Shimmer was a student before Twilight that brings her age to 18. There's other evidence that support this as well, the ponies are drinking what seems to be "Apple Cider" which is either sweet or just alcoholic in order to drink you must be 16-17 years old. Rainbow Dash loves Cider I'm pretty sure she is 17, Apple Jack is the one who makes it so she is 18 in order to sell and make.

We COULD actually take this a step closer to a definitive answer using major annual events such as the Summer Sun Celebration. During Twilight's coronation in "Magical Mystery Cure", she says that Celestia sent her to Ponyville "a little while ago," so she hasn't been there a full year yet. That is, until the season 4 premier when the Summer Sun Celebration is featured again. By this logic, we know seasons 4 and 5 take place within the same year, since the Grand Galloping Gala is featured in "Make New Friends But Keep Discord." Season 6 starts off in this same year, but goes into the next after the episode "A Hearth's Warming Tail." This places season 7 in the remainder of that year before the movie and season 8, with "The Best Gift Ever" placing season 9 in the following year. But even with all that, we won't know for sure without knowing how much time has passed when "The Last Problem" takes place, so still all for naught, but not a COMPLETE waste
I'm guessing they're around 15-16 in season 6, because in The Cart Before the Ponies they're learning the grade 10 physics curriculum. But since we don't know how much time passes between episodes that doesn't really tell us much.
Equestria Girls really plays a part in their ages. They are probably seniors in high school, and seniors' ages are usually (average) 17-19 years old, so they are around that age group.
At the start of season 4, it was stated that Twilight had been in Ponyville for a year. Therefore, Pinkie Pride marks Rainbow Dash's SECOND birthday since the beginning of the series.

Twi is actually 19. Just because she is a straight A+ student doesn't mean that she is the oldest. I know you didn't say anything about Twi being older, it's just a heads up.
I know this video is pretty old, but I had a problem with something, if you are gonna say that the ponies age quite similarly to humans, them why did you use the gestation period of an actual horse to determine sunset's age? wouldn't it take 9 months from conception to birth for them if they followed a human age pattern. and not only that, but these ponies are quite a but smaller than humans, and usually, smaller animals have shorter gestation periods (shorter lifetimes to usually) but adding that info to your pre-existing math, the main six would still be around young adult (20 to 25), not teenager (13 to 19)
corpralcobra420 Just try turning that into horse years. 2 months old is baby and toddler. Six months is about a elementary school and 1/2 middle school. 1 year old is a teen, and at 3-4 years, they are a full adult and at the healthy age to have children. Use that to figure out horse years.
I find it pretty strange though that at 17-19, none of them are in school (aside from Twilight who is basically in advanced studies), they live independently and have (possibly own) houses, and have jobs. In Rarity's case she's a business owner, and Rainbow is a weather captain. Seems like a lot for teenagers, those careers/businesses would take some time to build.
Little Body Big Brat well they could be teens, maybe not in their youngest years but definitely teens. Some teens in OUR world are having babies at the age of sixteen and some having jobs at the age of fifteen. If we base them off our world than its not very unlikely. And as we've seen there isn't much of a high school in equestria. At least none that I've seen so their expected to live on their own and prosper that way.
Actually, according to IDW and even slightly hinted to in the EQG Movies, Sunset Shimmer is a fully grown-or, at least young adult-mare, while Twilight is presumably younger than the CMC. Good math and research, though!
Are Rarity, Rainbowdash, and Fluttershy orphans? It's a possibility that the pony she got on to see better is her dad, but it might be a stranger who thought she was cute and left her.
Theres an episode showing rarity talking with her parents at the start when they left on vacation leaving sweetie bell in rarity's care. and rainbows dad took her to a wonderbolts festival. futtershy's the only one whos parents havent been shown.

Rainbow dash is shown with her dad, she may of may not be only with her dad, rarity was shown with both parents, she's not alone, But Apple jack... I think the writers said the shouting stars aj saw where supposed to be her dead parents, but she still has her brother sister, and her granny.

You know, Equestria Girls can be canon without Twilight and Sunset Shimmer having to be school age. They're magical ponies from Equestria, after all. And maybe pony ages don't actually equate to human ages.
I don't know if this helps, but every season equals a year thanks to Equestrian Girls. Luna said that the portal opens every thirty moons which is two and a half years. If your wondering how, its because the moons are referred to as full.moons and a full moon only happens once every month. So by the time one year was over it would be 12 moons. If you do this again it would be 24 moons and then you add six months to that and you get two and a half years. This is how the whole season thing makes sense. If we assume that the portal.opened in the middle of season 1 but they didn't know about it(which is when.Sunset left Equestrian) then that's would make season 1= half a year, season 2= one and a half years years and then season 3= two and a half years. And Equestrian Girls was made and shown after season three. Then that would make season 4= 1 year and then Rainbow Rocks came out. So there would still be a year and a half left before the portal opened if Twilight wouldn't have made the portal so she can go whenever she wants. So if the creators decide to make another Equestrian Girls (Which I don't know why they would, during Rainbow Rocks these girls should have already been in College) it would be after season 5...
Maybe in the human world they age more slow, it could be the reason why sunset looks almost the same age as twilight. But sunset seems younger since she went into the human realm. Animals do often age way more then humans do so I guess Pony age goes quicker
An observation, in the Cutie Mark Chronicles, we see Rarity crafting the costumes for the school play, where we see a filly Cherilee, and also in Pinkie Pride we see a filly Cherilee. How long does one need to study to become a certified teacher? At least you would need to be a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Sciences, which is typically four years. Assuming Cherilee was 17 when she finished school, that would be 17+4 =21 just for her undergraduate studies, then she would need to have studied another four years (to work as primary - kindergarten teacher) which makes it 25 years just to obtain her degree. Another observation is the apparent size of the ponies. While it may be logical to presume that equal size=equal age, different people/ponies grow at different rates, some look bigger when younger, others don't. There's an age when people/ponies stop growing and stay, approximately, the same for quite a while (mid-twenties, early thirties to early forties). Then, using the size to estimate the age is not a reliable method (of course, a forensic analysis of bones and other characteristics can give a very good estimation of age, but the mane six have an almost identical design). Equestria Girls is some sort of parallel universe, things there have a separate behavior. So, I would say that the mane six are in their mid-twenties, Fluttershy may be 27.
The fall of sunset shimmer clearly shows she's much older than Twilight there is a frame with the two of them sunset is clearly in her late teens while Twilight seems to be about 6 or 7. When the show starts I think Twi is about 20 Flutter shy is 23 pinky in 22 Dash is 19 and rarity is about 22and aj is about 18.
I like it how people are like "There's no way Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash are older then Twilight" and to me it's possible because in my group, the older ones are more playful while I tend to be the smarter and I'm the youngest. Great episode BTW
There is one fact you forgot. The season 4 premiere had the summer sun celebration. Which means one year has past by. And going by the statement that after season 4 premiere by Megan McCarthy is in chronological order we know that season 4 was all in fall. This means pinkie and dash have birthdays in the fall. But in what order? If you noticed the trees hold the clues. In rainbow Dash's birth day the trees had red leaves. That firmly place it around the middle of fall. Pinkie didn't. That means her birthday is early fall. In season 4 pinkie mention planing a one year old birthday party for the cake twins. This fact firmly place the first 3 season as a year. Fluttershy is the oldest at 18 in the beginning follow by twilight, rarity, pinkie, and rainbow dash at 17. And since applejack is smaller then the other she would be 16. Which would put the CMC's around 6-10 that is the time when most starting to notice others and searching for their goal. And what are the CMC's doing?
Actually, I don't think that Rainbow Dash applied to the Academy when she was 17, even though she legally could. In the episode Parental Glideance, Scootaloo tells Rainbow's parents about her path to becoming a Wonderbolt, without them have known any prior information, which means that Rainbow would have to be 1 year older.
As to how many birthdays we've skipped, S4 E1 takes place exactly 1 year after S1 E1 because Celestia says it's the first time she feels happy doing the Summer Sun Celebration (very much paraphrased). But then again, a year is meaningless because Equestria's planet does not orbit their sun.
She doesn't say it's the first time, she says it's good to be able to be happy for it. Not necessarily meaning it's the first time. This is why you don't paraphrase.
Just watched Princess Twilight Sparkle Part 2 again, Celestia says "Citizens of Equestria, it is no longer with a heavy heart but with great joy that I raise the summer sun. For this celebration now represents not the defeat of Nightmare Moon but the return of my sister, Princess Luna!" Notice the word 'now' Why would she say that and her big spiel about how she's feeling great joy and not sadness if this was not the first time she performed this with her sister after she had been released by the Elements of Harmony? I guess my paraphrasing was wrong but I think it's safe to deduce from the Sun Princess's speech that it is the 1001st Summer Sun Celebration that take place in Season 4.

It's at a different place every time, so it wouldn't make much sense for her to say it at the celebration in, say, Hoofington, but then not mention anything about it when she goes to Fillydelphia, Cloudsdale, Canterlot, etc. (Those were all just examples, please don't call me out on their use.)

The reason I've always figured that their ages ranged from 20-24 is because of a number of facts from the show: 1. Twilight Sparkle is most likely a graduate student doing her field work for a PhD. Now that would suggest she's at least 23-24, but we all know that Twilight is a prodigy and more than likely skipped several grades. So she could be 20-21 or even 19. 2. Rarity owns and operates a business. This is not typically what a teenager would be doing (exceptions exist of course, but Rarity is not so clearly a prodigy as Twilight, so it's safe to assume that she's of average age to start a business). Furthermore, her business is well-established, not just starting out. I figure her age would be early 20's at least. 3. Fluttershy doesn't so much own a BUSINESS, per se, but she does live alone and performs a municipal service for the town/county. Again, mid-20s seems appropriate. 4. Rainbow Dash, Pinkie, and Applejack are tough to pin down, since Dash and Pinkie have non-age-specific jobs, and Applejack runs a farm mostly out of necessity because she had to take over for her late parents. Also, Granny Smith still seems to be the brains of the operation, or at least have the final say. However, if we assume that they're similar age to Rarity and Fluttershy, that would put them in their early 20s. And what of the CMCs? Well, consider their dopplegangers in the human world-- they go to high school. That would make them about 13-14, which is also when human girls tend to, uh, develop (yes, it's a bit late, actually, but we're talking about a different species after all), which would suggest puberty age, confirming about 13-14. Push this down a little to accommodate the fact that Cheerilee seems to be teaching an elementary class and it's safe enough to say that the CMCs are about 6th grade, so 11-12. And that's the basis for my headcanon at least. It's spotty, but I think there's enough evidence to challenge the assumptions made in this video. However, I commend the creator of this video for exhaustive research, and I'd cede the point that I could be completely wrong about everything, and maybe they're all about 5-6 years old, since that's when Earth equines mature. The truth is, it's fun to speculate, but who really knows. That's all I've got!
I’m sorry but due to the fact that there was a “Spring Fling” and likely more pictures but just thrown out due to space or the fact that sunset won it every year, we don’t even know if they are in their late teens. I’m not hating though I love this channel but I just wanted to point that out.
Actually there's I small problem with the Sunset Shimmer age. It's said that Sunset was Celestia's student around the same time Twilight did. This mean's that Sunset is much older then Twilight as Twilight was just a little filly at the time of both gaining her cutie mark and being Celestia's student. This means that Sunset had gone through the mirror years earlier. My theory is that Sunset didn't stay in the human world, but was able to return to the Pony world with her magic briefly enough to learn of the Elements of Harmony, who the mane 6 were, and how Twilight became an Alicorn Princess. Because the mirror only works for three days out of 30 moons, Sunset would return once ever month for 3 days keeping herself hidden. She used her knowledge gathered from this time to strike. Sunset knew that Twilight would be told of the Mirror just like she was and very likely be told more because of the Elements of Harmony. Sunset found the human equals of the Mane 6 minus Twilight and broke them up, most likely trying to keep them from fulfilling the Elements in the Human world. It's very likely do to Sunset being a Unicorn pony that she now ages slower in the human world, thus keeping her youthful. If you take in to account that Twilight was a filly when she began under Celestia she would have to be at least 8 years old, but this is a problem because with the Cutie Mark Crusaders which also appear around this age, though in the Equestria Girls movie's they appear pre-teen and likely 12 to 14 in human form. You also have to take in to account the comics in which Princess Cadence is in School much like a Human High School. It's clear that certain changes can take place depending on where a Pony lives. In Ponyville it appears that school ends when one is still rather young looking with the option to apprentice in a field that is closely related to their Cutie Mark. Take Rarity for example, after she learned that her talent was finding Gemstones, she took that and used it for her Fashion. It's even possible that with many of those gems she was able to fund her Fashion talent and that is how she gained her own shop, very likely taking over for who ever was making clothes before her in the town. The aging system is hard to understand because it's really not needed. But if you want my thoughts the mane 6 are all the same age of 18 to 20, except for Fluttershy who is a year older then Pinkie. It could be that Fluttershy is already 20 years old. Other pony's are clearly older and it's safe to say that pony's including Big Mac,Cheerilee, Princess Cadence, and Shinning Armor are all in there mid Twenties. In reality unless actual ages are given only possible levels of age.

The equestria girls ages can’t be used as equivalent to the pony ages because the CMCs are in highschool in equestria girls but as pony’s they are in elementary school.
This is what I think (Season 9 episode 25): Applejack is the oldest, at around 26, almost 27. Fluttershy is around 25/26 Rarity is 25 Twilight is 25 as well Pinkie Pie is 24/25 Rainbow Dash is 23, the youngest. Another note: I *don't* think cutie marks are really associated with a pony growing up (puberty, just for ponies). I think it's mainly about when a pony finds what makes them special. So pre-pubescent ponies can get their cutie marks, and so can ponies that are fully grown adults. And also, I don't think it's possible that they are teens because: 1. They have their own jobs and responsibilities, heck, Rarity even has a whole business! 2. The equestria girls dimension and the mlp dimension are two different dimensions. There ages can differ between the two; after all, it never specifies that the ages are the same.
I'm also just gonna throw this out there, but if we are going off of the fact that EG is canon, then the entire group's ages get thrown off. When Twilight finds the yearbook in the library of the high school, she opens up to a picture of Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Fluttershy and is told later on that this was a picture of the girls in their freshman year. Now I can understand Fluttershy being held back for being a weak flyer in Equestria, and that translating to the human world in some form that caused human Fluttershy to be held back (most likely inadequate social skills at a young age that warranted the repetition of kindergarten) but with the ages in this video, that would mean that Applejack was ALSO held back and next in line after Twilight, I would claim that Applejack is the brightest and most driven out of the group, so she wouldn't have been held back. If anything, she would've skipped a grade. Also, all of the Mane 6 (minus Twilight) have seen Sunset Shimmer be crowned princess of the Fall Formal Dance three times already, meaning that all of them were seniors as well. And lastly, heights and ages don't always directly correspond. I know a 7-year-old that is the same height as his 11-year-old brother and will soon be taller than him. And that's a 4 year age gap! So the only proper ages that can hold up is the knowledge that Fluttershy is a year older than Pinkie Pie from Season 1 and we're right back where we started. But it really was a good shot at the theory and I did enjoy seeing where your information came from! ^.^
Rarity did mention being a late bloomer. She said she wondered why her cutie mark hasn't came yet. Also, Rarity and Cheerilee are the same age. If we take Equestria Girls universe as fact (It's canon, but time may go differently there) Then Cheerilee shouldn't be a teacher. That or Rarity shouldn't be a student.
In the Mlp FiM Book, The Journal of The Two Sisters, in one of Pinkie pie's entry's in the Journal of Friendship located in the back of the book, it actually states Rainbow Dash's Age! Here is what it states: 'Together, Cheese Sandwich and i threw a totally epic party for Rainbow's TENTH Birth-aversary!' Either twilight, sunset, and the human mane 5 are quite older then everyone else in the world of Equestria or its actually a middle school or something doesn't add up. However, Middle school is only 3 years. 6th, 7th, and 8th. Idk what to think of this. if what this video says might be true then.. Rainbow Dash. Pinkie Pie and Rarity are 10, Fluttershy and Applejack are 11, and somehow Twilight, sunset and prob the human mane 5, are 17.. o,o idk what to think of this. i hope someone can make sense of this because i know i cant!
If you count the Candle on the front of the cake, she is 21, but as the cake is being shown at front, figure in 10 more candles in the inner section(not the Edges), and you get 31. So RainbowDash would be 31 yrs old by this episode.
I personally think this (This is if they had human ages with their pony body): Twilight is 16, Fluttershy is 16 (maybe 17 if she has one of those wierd birthdays), Pinkie Pie is 15 (maybe 16 depending on if Flutters has a wierd birthday), Rarity is 16, Rainbow Dash is 15 or 16, and Applejack is 15 or 16. The fillies in the show look roughly all the same age Im guessing they are about 6 or 7. As far as I can tell, the age structure is the same, but they age more quickly. I would think an average lifespan is roughly in the 60s, only because i can see that they age quicker. Meaning that They hit puberty wayyy earlier than humans, and grow up earlier. Now since we cant really detirmine the ages of other ponies in the background, I assume if they are not obviously the same age group as the mane 6, then they are more than likely older adults ranging from their 20s to 40s on average. In the EG world however, this is more obvious when it comes to ages.

My theory is that time in Equestria is faster than the human world. Because in the comic when sunset shimmer first discovers the human world, we see Twilight in the background as a filly but Sunset Shimmer appears as Twilight's age now.
in the comic book about sunset shimmer we see at one point Twilight sparkle with shining armor and cadence in the background and she is still clearly a filly, i know most don't consider comics exactly canon but its something to consider

Sunset Shimmer has to be older than Twilight because she was a former students to Celestia. Now recall that Celestia took Twilight under her wing when she was very young. if Twilight and Shimmer were both students of Celestia at the same time, I'm sure they would have met at some point (you, to learn friendship and all that magic.)

I don't think Equestria and Equestria Girls are identical when it comes to ages. I think it's pretty clear that the pony counterparts are adults, and have been for a while. They aren't in school anymore, and they are well established in their jobs. They clearly aren't teenagers.
Especially considering how later in the series they're teachers...
"adult" is a huge word m8, im pretty sure mane 6 (ponies) just graduated, after all, we saw twiilight stil studying at the beginning of the series, they may be 18-21 at max.

Hmm the more I think about it, the more it seems to make more sense that the mane 6 are in their 20s cause they all seem to live on their own and have established careers. I'd say Fluttershy's younger brother would at least have to be in his early 20s for his family and friends to have the attitude they did about his lifestyle and it looked to me like him and FS were at the most about 5 years apart. Then again, Equestria could have completely different rules where adulthood starts at 15 or so rather than at 18-20 like in real life.

Cider isn't always alcoholic. Where I live, kids can drink (Apple) cider even when they are 5. So that doesn't really count.
I think that in America, hard cider is always alcoholic and soft cider has added spices. No spices were added during the manufacturing of the Apple family's cyder and the end product always appeared carbonated, this is the result of the cider being fermented. From what I heard, soft cider is never carbonated/fermented, at least not deliberately. The soft cider can appear carbonated after about a week in storage while Apply family cider is carbonated/fermented immediately which is the case for hard cider.
SaberScoot If that was the case, wouldn't it be illegal for any of them to have cider? I don't know about you, but where I live, you can drink alcoholic beverages once you are 21. If these ages are correct, either the cider doesn't have alcohol or the age law is different in Equestria/Ponyville.

You missed a bit of key info concerning Sunset Shimmer: She ran away to the human world before Twilight even got her cutie mark. There's no way they are the same age, Sunset is a fair bit older, I believe she had a good few years (doing research and adjusting to the new lifestyle) before she got into the school (pretending to be younger than she is).
Also, when Twilight gets her cutie mark she's applying for a specialized school (middle?) but I suspect she would have skipped a grade or two to even be considered for an exam.

AppleJack, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie aren't the same age. Both Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash are the same age, 21. But Fluttershy is one more month older than her, but born the same year. So, I don't know math that good XD. Since Fluttershy is one year older than Pinkie, not month, YEAR. That is 1982 + 1. Which equals 1983 when Pinkie was born. So Pinkie is 20.

Pony age is different from human age
Another thing to note is that we know Sunset Shimmer's been in the human world for at least 4 years. But we also know that the Crystal Empire (where the portal is located) disappeared a thousand years ago. It doesn't add up. And don't say she was banished after it returned. We know Sunset was Celestia's student before Twilight and the Crystal Empire re-appeared during Twilight's time as Celestia's student.
The only explanation would be that time passes differently in either world. One year in the human world might add up to about 250 years in Equestria, which still doesn't make sense, as that would mean that Twilight spent 750 Equestrian days in there (over two years) and we can't expect to have the rest of the mane 6 spending all that time in the Crystal Empire.

Sunset and Twi being the same age doesn't work considering that Sunset has been Tia's former student. So she must already have left Equestria at the point in time Twi took her entry exam; that would imply that Sunset has only ben a filly, barely able to cast spells herself at this point. Assuming that she is actually a few years older than Twi is a rather safe bet. This would also explain a second error in your theory: if Sunset is 1-2 years younger then the remane 5 and in the senior year of highschool, how comes the Remane 5 are still in the same highschool? The argue point is time: I had in mind that the Time between Equestria Girls and the pony world is not synchronized when the mirror is closed in the 30 moons (2,5 years) period. And that may or may not be true even with your theory and what I have heard (not have read yet) of the Equestria Girls Comic.

In the start of the show, twilight was still a student. It’s been years since then, so by the end they’re likely at least early 20’s.
Speaking of, Twilight is a princess. Fluttershy has a sanctuary. Rainbow’s a wonderbolt. Rarity has a chain of boutiques. AJ just knows more than she did at the start, she’s still got a hat and a farm. And then there’s Pinkie, who’s... well, she’s Pinkie Pie complete with everything that entails- party planner... and baker(?)
(I never could tell exactly what Pinkie did, and obviously that hasn’t changed.)
It was very clever to use Equestria Girls as a means to deduce how old they are. However, there are some holes in your theory that I would like to point out:
*1.* As you can see at 5:19, it shows that Cherilee, the current Ponyville Schoolhouse teacher, was at the same age as Rarity when they were just fillies, whereas in the EG-reality, Cherilee was a teacher and Rarity was still a student.
*2.* _Princess_ Celestia is over a thousand years old, while _Principle_ Celestia could not possibly be this old.
*3.* In _FIENDship is Magic #3_, it shows that when the sirens was banished through the mirror a thousand years ago by Starswirl, they ended up in the modern era with their hoodies.
This shows that not only that the EG-reality's timeline is completely inconsistent with the Ponyverse's, but even how the mirror transports subjects between worlds is time-warping.

Luther Barrett Applejack runs the farm with her family, including a grandmother and older brother. It's likely she doesn't run the farm so much as she just does most of the work on it. And Rarity running a fashion business as a late teen is entirely possible, especially with her talent for it.

Luther Barrett Actually, it is all likely. There are business owners that are in their early teens. Now do they run it? No. They have someone who runs it for them until they are old enough. Which is where I think Granny Smith and Big Mac comes in. I have no doubt in my mind that Big Mac is in his early to mid twenties, as it seems Big Mac doesn't seem that much older than AJ. But that aside, there are 14, 15 year olds that do have businesses of their own because they are that good.

How do you know that Twi is the same age as Sunset if Granny Smith is the same height as well. Many other ponies are also the same exact height, giving in to the fact that the same template is used for many people the ponies.

I think there are some things you messed up on. The characters in equestria girls do NOT match the ages of their pony counter parts, and just because sunset shimmer entered high school, doesn't necessarily mean she is the exact age as all of them, and it doesn't necessarily mean that the first thing she did when going to the 'human world' was enter high school. If we were to consider the comics as canon, they show sunset being at least a teen when she stopped studying with celestia, which would make sense. Twilight was EXTREMELY young when she became celestia's new pupil. For sunset to have been trained, then left, all before twilight, she would have been so young, it couldn't have been more then a child's tantrum. And I just don't think it realistic to think celestia would so easily abandon a child like that. So I think it is reasonable to assume that sunset shimmer is older by at least a few years, then twilight.
Not to mention you can't really use height to measure age when it comes to a series that uses the same puppet base for nearly all ponies. ALL teen and adult ponies use nearly the exact same base, so are the same height. And equestia girls is no different. The ponies would have ranged in height and shape if they weren't made on flash puppets, but since they are they only look different in color, mane design, and eye shape. Twilight is slightly taller due to being an alicorn, and will continue to get taller while her friends will not. It doesn't matter how old they are, that is just how things work in this world.
Not to say you don't make some good points, but even with the class thing, one thing to keep in mind is that even if rarity and apple jack were the same age, they may not be in the same class. Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo weren't in Apple Bloom's class until later, signifying they likely transferred. So I think it's safe to assume that there is not simply one class of ponies in ponyville.

I think Rarity is the oldest, seeing as how she was in the same class as Cheerilee who we've already saw a photo of in the 80's.

After that, I think it's Twilight because we've seen her hang out with Cheerilee once or twice, and she's old enough to be a teacher. (I think.) Next is Fluttershy. She was a very tall filly, but that doesn't nessicarily mean that she's the oldest. I'm in a class of twenty seven, okay. I'm fifth tallest, but seventh youngest. That's got to mean something, right?
Next, I think it's Pinkie Pie. She plans parties for Ponyville every single day! That's very hard work, but with her exciting personality, it's reasonable for her to be one of the youngest.
Last but not least is Rainbow Dash. For one, would you really ask someone younger than you to plan your birthday party for you? Exactly. And second of all, why hasn't she become a Wonderbolt yet, after the countless amazing things she's done that's impressed Spitfire? Because she's too young!
And with that said, I think both Rarity and Applejack are 18, Twilight is 17 - so I agree with the age you gave her, Fluttershy is 16 and both Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash are fifteen.

Akiractv I Think what he's trying to get at is most people who are older than you are taller but since we don't know since the show or the movie doesn't conferm the ages of the background characters and compare those to the main six. Like Applebloom and her friends for example, Applebloom act more mature although in some cases she doesn't so that'd put her around the ages 12 or 13, Sweetie Bell is like her too but in some aspects she worries like her sister so that'd put her around the same age of Applebloom if not younger so 11-12. Scootaloo on the other hand is daring and trying to empress Rainbow Dash, Normally when kids really like someone they try to empress them so that puts scootaloo at 9-10. There size comparison how ever......Well in the show its hard to tell, and in the movie it was hard to tell too so can't really do anything there but to me in the show, Scootaloo (minus her mane) looks shorter than Sweetie Bell. Applebloom and Sweetie Bell are around the same age so they'll be close to similar in height.

Actually, using the MLP Annual 2013, it starts off with Sunset doing her mid-term magic test on Page 2, and later that day she took (and passed) the test we see Filly Twilight (before the Sonic Rainboom, as she's without Cutie Mark) with Cadence & Shining (presumably in their early-mid teens, and Cadence is otherwise babysitting Twilight) having a picnic lunch whilst Sunset is sitting studying at a bench nearby with Lyra & Minuette (Colgate) along with 3 other mares asking if she'd like to join them for lunch on Page 3.
Page 9 shows Sunset (after what is presumably a few months at least during the time-skip shown on Page 5) stepping out of the portal in the statue's pedestal on Earth with a flyer for the 'Sundance CHS Yearbook' in the final panel, hinting that it's nearing the end of the school year when she first arrives on Earth. Page 10 starts the flashbacks to the Human-Mane 5 meeting and becoming friends as Freshman (9th Grade, 14-15).
Page 17 shows them in Homeroom on their first day with Trixie as a fellow student as Harshwhinny as their teacher.
On Page 19 we see Babs Seed (and her sister Sunflower Seed) who seems to be about Applejack's age, maybe a bit older, whilst on Equestria Babs is about the age of the CMC (who seem to be around 12 in EqG).
Page 29 shows Silver Spoon & Diamond Tiara (who are about the same age as the CMC in FiM & EqG) walking with Rarity who seems to be about 3-4 inches taller than them (about right for a 2-3 year age gap), though unless CHS is run more as a Years/Grade 7-12 (like here in Australia) instead of 9-12 (as-is in USA), they'd either have to be advanced for their ages or CHS is more a Middle School & High School merged together to run Years/Grades 5(6)-12.
Interesting note Fluttershy is two years older than Rainbow as well as one year older then pinkie making her the oldest and most mature out of the group:)

Out of curiosity, how technologically developed is Equestria? We've seen the FlimFlam Brother's machine, which included crushers, pistons, colorful lights, a vacuum, a conveyor belt, etc (powered by magic). We've seen plows used by Earth ponies. And while it may not exactly work with this, Pegasi have created Rainbows, Lightning, etc. which means we can assume electromagnetic fields have been developed. We've also seen sewing machines, whatever Twilight tried to use to observe Pinkie Pie's Pinkie Sense, cannons, and DJ booths. However, I have never seen anyone use a pen, microwave, television, or otherwise. Is there a reason why, or is it just that technological advancement is scattered or something like that? Or rather, is it just because... well... because why not?

Personally, I wonder (in general) about pony's ages in this show. Nothing seems to coincide with any laws of our normal non-EQG world. I'm not sure if age has anything to do with how ponies look, other than the five seeming life stages. (infant, [Flurry Heart] young pony, [Crusaders and classmates] scrawny teenager, [young Fluttershy, young Applejack] healthy adult, [Mane 6 and most background ponies] and old-age. [Granny Smith]) I have seen six seasons of MLP, and so far I haven't seen the Crusaders age at all, nor have I really seen the Cake infants grow, either.
I wouldn't be surprised if Rainbow Dash actually was 35, 41, whatever, though. Even in our world, the physical appearance of animals doesn't change much between maturity and old age. Our family had a malamute husky, and between ages 3-15, she looked the same. I wouldn't be surprised if in the MLP world, ponies don't really age very much physically between their "teenage" and "old-age" years. So it doesn't seem much of a stretch to me that Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie are one year apart, and other characters can be much older or younger. When we first meet Twilight in s1e1, she seems to be near the end of her school career, whether you consider Celestia's school for gifted [x-men] students everything including college is tomayto tomahto to me. I wouldn't be surprised if Twilight was in her 20's when we first saw her. Nor would I be surprised if Pinkie Pie was 3 years old when she left the farm. (Remember, we're talking about ponies, not people. In our world, animals typically mature in a very short time, then stay there for a number of years. A foal is on its feet and running with its mother usually within an hour after its born. It takes us humans months or years to get on our feet.)
When it comes to age vs physical size, look at Snips and Snails. They're best friends, and usually best friends aren't very far apart in age. Snips is short and small. Snails is skinny and tall. Mal nourishment or genetics? Maybe. But we also have the examples of Mr. and Mrs. Cake. Mr. Cake is skinny, even though he is a full-grown adult. He is also very active with his deliveries for the business that he and Mrs. Cake run together, yet all that exercise doesn't seem to have built up his muscles. Then there's also Bulk Biceps, who is the direct opposite. Also, Applejack had the scrawny teenager look in "Where the Apple Lies." She turned out to be one of the strongest, if not the strongest, ponies in the mane six, and her healthy adult appearance is similar to that of the other ponies in the mane six.
So I don't automatically think that a pony's physical appearance is based on age, except for infants and old-aged ponies.
Yeah, this was probably a false conclusion due to the reasoning, but I still at least have a headcanon they're no younger than late teens and no older than early or mid-20s.
Don't forget about the Mane 6 being able to drink. But who knows equestria may be different besides the racism.
Being able to drink doesn't help because legal drinking ages are different around the world and even just in North America. Some parts of Canada have it at 18, others have it at 19, and I think in the US it changes between states but hovers around 20.

I really have been enjoying your videos as I just stumbled across them while browsing RUclips. It's nice to see a logical, non-biased viewpoint on things. This allows for a neutral standing where it's literally impossible for anyone to argue, or become offended (unless they're just shit disturbers). I'm not a social justice warrior, but it's just really refreshing to not become extremely stressed out just by watching a theory video. When people become hysterical, it makes everyone else hysterical and it's just really unpleasant.

Taking the whole series into account now that it is over, if you assume that ponies have the same age of majority as humans, Rainbow Dash's minimum age post-Pinkie Pride is 19. Her parents weren't aware of her joining the Wonderbolts, meaning that she waited that extra year to be able to do it without their involvement. Then, she ages up to 19 in Pinkie Pride.
In The Cutie Re-Mark, Rainbow, Pinkie and Maud are seen as part of Equestria's military forces, fighting Sombra's army. Thus, Pinkie must be a legal adult by that point (or one year below that age).
Maud is Pinkie's *older* sister, so she is at minimum one pony-pregnancy-length older than Pinkie. Limestone is older than Maud, Marble is younger than Pinkie. Irrelevant to Mane 6 ages, but cool to work out.

Furthermore, in EQG, it can be assumed that the CMC are about freshmen age, and I highly doubt that Applejack is only 3 years older than Applebloom, as in the pony universe, Applebloom seems to be in either elementary or middle school, and Applejack is an adult.
That's right. Mane 6 are adult, they are about 35, RD's cake has 35 candles. He counted side candles twice, this is mistake.

Soo. I was thinking... then, how old are the cmc? If EQG is indeed canon, then, seeing as the CMC goes to school i.e. canterlot high, then they must be freshmen, which is equivalent to year 9 in Australia, or stage 5, or the mid-High school stage, where they would be ages 14-15. (I am Australian, so ignore me if I am blathering out crap at this point forwards) But! Looking at what sort of environment they learn in as ponies, they seem far too young to be ages 14-15. In fact, they appear more primary school stage, based on how their school environment is. What's possible is that if, following the Australian school style of primary then high school, then they may be in year 7, aged 12 or 13. To me, this seems most likely, if not younger because there are schools that go K(kindergarten)-12. But consider that AJ is 19. It appears that big mac was much older than AJ when she left. So, wouldn't it appear very likely that AJ would be born close to Applebloom instead of a gap of potentially 7 years? From what I gather, Big Mac was potentially in his early teens when AJ left (see how he's not as large as an adult horse but not nearly small enough to be considered prepubescent?) his awkward height and gangly limbs may also make him appear that he is somewhat in the middle of puberty. therefore, I gather Big Mac would be about 13-15 when AJ left. I assume AJ would be about 10 at that point then. If Big Mac was 15 when AJ left, AJ was 10, and she looks like how applebloom and the cmc is now. shorter legs, smaller body, etc etc. So if AJ is not 19, then applebloom being 11-13 isn't much of a stretch, meaning that big mac must be around 24 now. BUT! A little googling tell me that if ponies in equestria have approximately 3 times the lifespan of the average horse (30 years), then their fertility must last 3 times as long. if their optimal fertility is 7 years, 7 X 3 = 21, then yes, it may be possible that the Big Mac, AJ, and Applebloom are born so far apart. Especially when you look at another example of two siblings with a large age gap: Sweetiebelle and Rarity :)
The thing is that the Equestria Girls universe is not canon compared to the real one; things that go on there, including character ages and traits, are not the same as in the regular pony universe.

I assume to my best calculations in ages of the main six are in their mid-teens, we have some likely hood evidence from Fluttershy saying to Pinkie Pie "I'm a year older than you" if you've played the MLP pony game found in play store for both (Android, IOS) if you tap on Twilight she says "Number 16" this might seem odd to some people but if you stop and think about it, normally people stay in education until the ages of 18-21 depending on their course, Princess Celestia said "You can continue your studies here in ponyville" some indication Twilight is indeed 16 by Season 1 standards.
So the question is how old are they?, they don't have canon ages it's only speculation from the fans so I'd say.
Twilight was 16 in Season 1, we can see the seasons change in MLP but we only see Twilight, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie's birthdays in the show so them characters were possibly the youngest.
After Twilight's birthday she turns 17, Pinkie Pie is the youngest in the group so I'll say Season 1 16 after her birthday she is the same age as Twilight and Rainbow Dash is the same as them two.
It's pretty obvious Apple Jack, Rarity and Fluttershy are the oldest within the group, Fluttershy is a year older than Pinkie Pie that makes her 18 so is Rarity because the age in order to run a business in the industry is 18 years of age.
Apple Jack is the big sister of Apple Bloom who is 14 so that makes Apple Jack at least 18, Sunset Shimmer was a student before Twilight that brings her age to 18.
There's other evidence that support this as well, the ponies are drinking what seems to be "Apple Cider" which is either sweet or just alcoholic in order to drink you must be 16-17 years old.
Rainbow Dash loves Cider I'm pretty sure she is 17, Apple Jack is the one who makes it so she is 18 in order to sell and make.

We COULD actually take this a step closer to a definitive answer using major annual events such as the Summer Sun Celebration. During Twilight's coronation in "Magical Mystery Cure", she says that Celestia sent her to Ponyville "a little while ago," so she hasn't been there a full year yet. That is, until the season 4 premier when the Summer Sun Celebration is featured again.
By this logic, we know seasons 4 and 5 take place within the same year, since the Grand Galloping Gala is featured in "Make New Friends But Keep Discord." Season 6 starts off in this same year, but goes into the next after the episode "A Hearth's Warming Tail." This places season 7 in the remainder of that year before the movie and season 8, with "The Best Gift Ever" placing season 9 in the following year.
But even with all that, we won't know for sure without knowing how much time has passed when "The Last Problem" takes place, so still all for naught, but not a COMPLETE waste

Equestria Girls really plays a part in their ages. They are probably seniors in high school, and seniors' ages are usually (average) 17-19 years old, so they are around that age group.
At the start of season 4, it was stated that Twilight had been in Ponyville for a year. Therefore, Pinkie Pride marks Rainbow Dash's SECOND birthday since the beginning of the series.

I know this video is pretty old, but I had a problem with something, if you are gonna say that the ponies age quite similarly to humans, them why did you use the gestation period of an actual horse to determine sunset's age? wouldn't it take 9 months from conception to birth for them if they followed a human age pattern. and not only that, but these ponies are quite a but smaller than humans, and usually, smaller animals have shorter gestation periods (shorter lifetimes to usually) but adding that info to your pre-existing math, the main six would still be around young adult (20 to 25), not teenager (13 to 19)

I find it pretty strange though that at 17-19, none of them are in school (aside from Twilight who is basically in advanced studies), they live independently and have (possibly own) houses, and have jobs. In Rarity's case she's a business owner, and Rainbow is a weather captain. Seems like a lot for teenagers, those careers/businesses would take some time to build.
Little Body Big Brat well they could be teens, maybe not in their youngest years but definitely teens. Some teens in OUR world are having babies at the age of sixteen and some having jobs at the age of fifteen. If we base them off our world than its not very unlikely. And as we've seen there isn't much of a high school in equestria. At least none that I've seen so their expected to live on their own and prosper that way.
Actually, according to IDW and even slightly hinted to in the EQG Movies, Sunset Shimmer is a fully grown-or, at least young adult-mare, while Twilight is presumably younger than the CMC. Good math and research, though!

You know, Equestria Girls can be canon without Twilight and Sunset Shimmer having to be school age. They're magical ponies from Equestria, after all. And maybe pony ages don't actually equate to human ages.
I don't know if this helps, but every season equals a year thanks to Equestrian Girls. Luna said that the portal opens every thirty moons which is two and a half years. If your wondering how, its because the moons are referred to as full.moons and a full moon only happens once every month. So by the time one year was over it would be 12 moons. If you do this again it would be 24 moons and then you add six months to that and you get two and a half years. This is how the whole season thing makes sense. If we assume that the portal.opened in the middle of season 1 but they didn't know about it(which is when.Sunset left Equestrian) then that's would make season 1= half a year, season 2= one and a half years years and then season 3= two and a half years. And Equestrian Girls was made and shown after season three. Then that would make season 4= 1 year and then Rainbow Rocks came out. So there would still be a year and a half left before the portal opened if Twilight wouldn't have made the portal so she can go whenever she wants. So if the creators decide to make another Equestrian Girls (Which I don't know why they would, during Rainbow Rocks these girls should have already been in College) it would be after season 5...

An observation, in the Cutie Mark Chronicles, we see Rarity crafting the costumes for the school play, where we see a filly Cherilee, and also in Pinkie Pride we see a filly Cherilee. How long does one need to study to become a certified teacher? At least you would need to be a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Sciences, which is typically four years. Assuming Cherilee was 17 when she finished school, that would be 17+4 =21 just for her undergraduate studies, then she would need to have studied another four years (to work as primary - kindergarten teacher) which makes it 25 years just to obtain her degree. Another observation is the apparent size of the ponies. While it may be logical to presume that equal size=equal age, different people/ponies grow at different rates, some look bigger when younger, others don't. There's an age when people/ponies stop growing and stay, approximately, the same for quite a while (mid-twenties, early thirties to early forties). Then, using the size to estimate the age is not a reliable method (of course, a forensic analysis of bones and other characteristics can give a very good estimation of age, but the mane six have an almost identical design). Equestria Girls is some sort of parallel universe, things there have a separate behavior. So, I would say that the mane six are in their mid-twenties, Fluttershy may be 27.
The fall of sunset shimmer clearly shows she's much older than Twilight there is a frame with the two of them sunset is clearly in her late teens while Twilight seems to be about 6 or 7. When the show starts I think Twi is about 20 Flutter shy is 23 pinky in 22 Dash is 19 and rarity is about 22and aj is about 18.

There is one fact you forgot. The season 4 premiere had the summer sun celebration. Which means one year has past by. And going by the statement that after season 4 premiere by Megan McCarthy is in chronological order we know that season 4 was all in fall. This means pinkie and dash have birthdays in the fall. But in what order? If you noticed the trees hold the clues. In rainbow Dash's birth day the trees had red leaves. That firmly place it around the middle of fall. Pinkie didn't. That means her birthday is early fall.
In season 4 pinkie mention planing a one year old birthday party for the cake twins. This fact firmly place the first 3 season as a year. Fluttershy is the oldest at 18 in the beginning follow by twilight, rarity, pinkie, and rainbow dash at 17. And since applejack is smaller then the other she would be 16. Which would put the CMC's around 6-10 that is the time when most starting to notice others and searching for their goal. And what are the CMC's doing?
Actually, I don't think that Rainbow Dash applied to the Academy when she was 17, even though she legally could. In the episode Parental Glideance, Scootaloo tells Rainbow's parents about her path to becoming a Wonderbolt, without them have known any prior information, which means that Rainbow would have to be 1 year older.

As to how many birthdays we've skipped, S4 E1 takes place exactly 1 year after S1 E1 because Celestia says it's the first time she feels happy doing the Summer Sun Celebration (very much paraphrased). But then again, a year is meaningless because Equestria's planet does not orbit their sun.
She doesn't say it's the first time, she says it's good to be able to be happy for it. Not necessarily meaning it's the first time. This is why you don't paraphrase.
Just watched Princess Twilight Sparkle Part 2 again, Celestia says "Citizens of Equestria, it is no longer with a heavy heart but with great joy that I raise the summer sun. For this celebration now represents not the defeat of Nightmare Moon but the return of my sister, Princess Luna!" Notice the word 'now' Why would she say that and her big spiel about how she's feeling great joy and not sadness if this was not the first time she performed this with her sister after she had been released by the Elements of Harmony? I guess my paraphrasing was wrong but I think it's safe to deduce from the Sun Princess's speech that it is the 1001st Summer Sun Celebration that take place in Season 4.

It's at a different place every time, so it wouldn't make much sense for her to say it at the celebration in, say, Hoofington, but then not mention anything about it when she goes to Fillydelphia, Cloudsdale, Canterlot, etc. (Those were all just examples, please don't call me out on their use.)

The reason I've always figured that their ages ranged from 20-24 is because of a number of facts from the show:
1. Twilight Sparkle is most likely a graduate student doing her field work for a PhD. Now that would suggest she's at least 23-24, but we all know that Twilight is a prodigy and more than likely skipped several grades. So she could be 20-21 or even 19.
2. Rarity owns and operates a business. This is not typically what a teenager would be doing (exceptions exist of course, but Rarity is not so clearly a prodigy as Twilight, so it's safe to assume that she's of average age to start a business). Furthermore, her business is well-established, not just starting out. I figure her age would be early 20's at least.
3. Fluttershy doesn't so much own a BUSINESS, per se, but she does live alone and performs a municipal service for the town/county. Again, mid-20s seems appropriate.
4. Rainbow Dash, Pinkie, and Applejack are tough to pin down, since Dash and Pinkie have non-age-specific jobs, and Applejack runs a farm mostly out of necessity because she had to take over for her late parents. Also, Granny Smith still seems to be the brains of the operation, or at least have the final say. And what of the CMCs? Well, consider their dopplegangers in the human world-- they go to high school. That would make them about 13-14, which is also when human girls tend to, uh, develop (yes, it's a bit late, actually, but we're talking about a different species after all), which would suggest puberty age, confirming about 13-14. Push this down a little to accommodate the fact that Cheerilee seems to be teaching an elementary class and it's safe enough to say that the CMCs are about 6th grade, so 11-12.
And that's the basis for my headcanon at least. It's spotty, but I think there's enough evidence to challenge the assumptions made in this video. However, I commend the creator of this video for exhaustive research, and I'd cede the point that I could be completely wrong about everything, and maybe they're all about 5-6 years old, since that's when Earth equines mature. The truth is, it's fun to speculate, but who really knows.

Season 7 really knock home that they are adults and have been for years. I think the cutie mark crusaders are around 15 years old.
I’m sorry but due to the fact that there was a “Spring Fling” and likely more pictures but just thrown out due to space or the fact that sunset won it every year, we don’t even know if they are in their late teens. I’m not hating though I love this channel but I just wanted to point that out.
Actually there's I small problem with the Sunset Shimmer age. It's said that Sunset was Celestia's student around the same time Twilight did. This mean's that Sunset is much older then Twilight as Twilight was just a little filly at the time of both gaining her cutie mark and being Celestia's student. This means that Sunset had gone through the mirror years earlier. My theory is that Sunset didn't stay in the human world, but was able to return to the Pony world with her magic briefly enough to learn of the Elements of Harmony, who the mane 6 were, and how Twilight became an Alicorn Princess. Because the mirror only works for three days out of 30 moons, Sunset would return once ever month for 3 days keeping herself hidden. She used her knowledge gathered from this time to strike. Sunset knew that Twilight would be told of the Mirror just like she was and very likely be told more because of the Elements of Harmony. Sunset found the human equals of the Mane 6 minus Twilight and broke them up, most likely trying to keep them from fulfilling the Elements in the Human world.
It's very likely do to Sunset being a Unicorn pony that she now ages slower in the human world, thus keeping her youthful. If you take in to account that Twilight was a filly when she began under Celestia she would have to be at least 8 years old, but this is a problem because with the Cutie Mark Crusaders which also appear around this age, though in the Equestria Girls movie's they appear pre-teen and likely 12 to 14 in human form.
You also have to take in to account the comics in which Princess Cadence is in School much like a Human High School. It's clear that certain changes can take place depending on where a Pony lives. In Ponyville it appears that school ends when one is still rather young looking with the option to apprentice in a field that is closely related to their Cutie Mark. Take Rarity for example, after she learned that her talent was finding Gemstones, she took that and used it for her Fashion. It's even possible that with many of those gems she was able to fund her Fashion talent and that is how she gained her own shop, very likely taking over for who ever was making clothes before her in the town.
The aging system is hard to understand because it's really not needed. But if you want my thoughts the mane 6 are all the same age of 18 to 20, except for Fluttershy who is a year older then Pinkie. It could be that Fluttershy is already 20 years old. Other pony's are clearly older and it's safe to say that pony's including Big Mac,Cheerilee, Princess Cadence, and Shinning Armor are all in there mid Twenties. In reality unless actual ages are given only possible levels of age.

The equestria girls ages can’t be used as equivalent to the pony ages because the CMCs are in highschool in equestria girls but as pony’s they are in elementary school.

This is what I think (Season 9 episode 25):
Applejack is the oldest, at around 26, almost 27.
Fluttershy is around 25/26
Rarity is 25
Twilight is 25 as well
Pinkie Pie is 24/25
Rainbow Dash is 23, the youngest.
Another note: I *don't* think cutie marks are really associated with a pony growing up (puberty, just for ponies). I think it's mainly about when a pony finds what makes them special. So pre-pubescent ponies can get their cutie marks, and so can ponies that are fully grown adults.
And also, I don't think it's possible that they are teens because:
1. They have their own jobs and responsibilities, heck, Rarity even has a whole business!
2. The equestria girls dimension and the mlp dimension are two different dimensions. There ages can differ between the two; after all, it never specifies that the ages are the same.
I'm also just gonna throw this out there, but if we are going off of the fact that EG is canon, then the entire group's ages get thrown off. When Twilight finds the yearbook in the library of the high school, she opens up to a picture of Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Fluttershy and is told later on that this was a picture of the girls in their freshman year. Now I can understand Fluttershy being held back for being a weak flyer in Equestria, and that translating to the human world in some form that caused human Fluttershy to be held back (most likely inadequate social skills at a young age that warranted the repetition of kindergarten) but with the ages in this video, that would mean that Applejack was ALSO held back and next in line after Twilight, I would claim that Applejack is the brightest and most driven out of the group, so she wouldn't have been held back. If anything, she would've skipped a grade. Also, all of the Mane 6 (minus Twilight) have seen Sunset Shimmer be crowned princess of the Fall Formal Dance three times already, meaning that all of them were seniors as well. And lastly, heights and ages don't always directly correspond. I know a 7-year-old that is the same height as his 11-year-old brother and will soon be taller than him. And that's a 4 year age gap! So the only proper ages that can hold up is the knowledge that Fluttershy is a year older than Pinkie Pie from Season 1 and we're right back where we started. But it really was a good shot at the theory and I did enjoy seeing where your information came from! ^.^
Rarity did mention being a late bloomer. She said she wondered why her cutie mark hasn't came yet.
Also, Rarity and Cheerilee are the same age. If we take Equestria Girls universe as fact (It's canon, but time may go differently there) Then Cheerilee shouldn't be a teacher. That or Rarity shouldn't be a student.

In the Mlp FiM Book, The Journal of The Two Sisters, in one of Pinkie pie's entry's in the Journal of Friendship located in the back of the book, it actually states Rainbow Dash's Age! Here is what it states: 'Together, Cheese Sandwich and i threw a totally epic party for Rainbow's TENTH Birth-aversary!' Either twilight, sunset, and the human mane 5 are quite older then everyone else in the world of Equestria or its actually a middle school or something doesn't add up. However, Middle school is only 3 years. 6th, 7th, and 8th. Idk what to think of this. if what this video says might be true then.. Rainbow Dash. Pinkie Pie and Rarity are 10, Fluttershy and Applejack are 11, and somehow Twilight, sunset and prob the human mane 5, are 17.. o,o idk what to think of this. i hope someone can make sense of this because i know i cant!

The ages of Equesrtia is the double of the human world's. So the mane 6 are roughly in their early 30s.
Sunset would be older than Twilight because when she was first introduced, Celestia said that she taught Sunset before Twilight.
If you count the Candle on the front of the cake, she is 21, but as the cake is being shown at front, figure in 10 more candles in the inner section(not the Edges), and you get 31. So RainbowDash would be 31 yrs old by this episode.
At the time this was realised, if Rainbow Dash was as old as the amount of cake candles there are, Dashie would had been the same age as my mom
i like to think that rainbow dash has the following nick names for her parents -

I personally think this (This is if they had human ages with their pony body): Twilight is 16, Fluttershy is 16 (maybe 17 if she has one of those wierd birthdays), Pinkie Pie is 15 (maybe 16 depending on if Flutters has a wierd birthday), Rarity is 16, Rainbow Dash is 15 or 16, and Applejack is 15 or 16. The fillies in the show look roughly all the same age Im guessing they are about 6 or 7. As far as I can tell, the age structure is the same, but they age more quickly. I would think an average lifespan is roughly in the 60s, only because i can see that they age quicker. Meaning that They hit puberty wayyy earlier than humans, and grow up earlier. Now since we cant really detirmine the ages of other ponies in the background, I assume if they are not obviously the same age group as the mane 6, then they are more than likely older adults ranging from their 20s to 40s on average. In the EG world however, this is more obvious when it comes to ages.
yeah i was close. I made assumptions due to how their attitudes area nd how they react to things. I am in that same age group (im 16) and can relate to that.
My theory is that time in Equestria is faster than the human world. Because in the comic when sunset shimmer first discovers the human world, we see Twilight in the background as a filly but Sunset Shimmer appears as Twilight's age now.
The episode in which AJ says she was the last in her class to get her cutie mark was Call Of The Cutie, I'm pretty sure.
This is just an observation but if you notice how when Fluttershy was young she had longer legs then most of the other fillies and colts.
in the comic book about sunset shimmer we see at one point Twilight sparkle with shining armor and cadence in the background and she is still clearly a filly, i know most don't consider comics exactly canon but its something to consider
