    We all know that Rainbow Dash isn't exactly a scholar. She's lazy, she has other interests, she can't really focus... and, as we learned in a certain season four episode, she has a surprisingly different way of absorbing information than most people are familiar with. Is she just that into flying, or is there something else going on here? Could the rainbow-maned Element of Loyalty actually be autistic?

    I learned the '' symbols in very similar way.
    My math teacher got the 'greater than' 'less than' symbols to stick with us by explaining it as an alligator's mouth. She even drew the symbol with teeth on the board and had us put teeth too.
    I don't know the names for each symbol, but I know the concept. Which is what is actually important.

    I do find it funny how when bronies make analysis videos, they get yelled at for taking something pointless too seriously, but are perfectly ok with game theory doing the exact same thing. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy game theory, but Its funny when people bitch about cartoon analysis videos.

      @stekuns612 9 лет назад +4

      The thing is, people who do controversial videos about MLP do it because it can turn interesting
      There are many things in the show that can turn into theories and many people enjoy discussing and sharing their findings.
      The one thing I have to agree on is the bitching about something
      People can share their ideas about it but bitching about it is taking it too far.

    I like this concept! Although, uh, I feel like it might be possible ADHD? I personally view it that way since I've always related to her, and can with 'suspected but not confirmed ADHD." I've done about a half a year of research on ADHD as a whole, and much longer on Rainbow Dash. Some symptoms overlap, like the stuff from Testing, Testing thing. Just, a few things stood out to me? I know that they can also be symptoms or a part of autism, but it's just how I saw it.
    She's always flying. Even when she's grounded, if she gets excited, the tips of her wings start flapping. I sorta see it like stimming, almost. It can apply to either, but I do "inverse jazz hands," basically hand flapping, and seeing it onscreen made me feel more 'normal.'
    Daring Doom and the Wonderbolts. When she starts talking about them, she can ramble for hours, and she's changed large aspects of her life to make sure that they all revolved around her, like actually joining the Wonderbolts and going to conventions. Would those qualify as hyper-fixations or special interests? Again, it's a bit of both, but still.
    I feel like this would explain her confidence being a mask over a fear of failure, (since I believe ADHD has low self-esteem and insecurity as a symptom as well,) and could explain why she's better with social cues and sarcasm. Is that just me? Was I misinformed? Maybe I just wanted to relate to her more since she's my favorite but I'm not that sporty, I dunno. Sorry. 😅

    I have aspergers, but tbh Idc if people shit on it. i.e calling someone autists for dumb reasons, or saying "This comment is filled with autism". None of it really hurts me. if anything, at the rate people use autism as an insult, it kinda loses its sting after a while. I mean before it was used as an insult, it was just a developmental disorder. Then it became a mildly offensive insult... now, it's just a developmental disorder again, because the insulting intent kinda burned itself out after, what? The first 3 uses?

      I could see Rainbow also having ADHD. She has a very hard time focusing and is very implusive, which is the two most common forms of ADHD. But I do also think Dash is on the spectrum. Sometimes she takes things literally(ex. In one episode, Starlight said she and Rairty had to walk in each other's shoes and Rainbow Dash literally thought she meant it in a literal way), she has intensive interests, has a hard time reading emotions of others, fails to see things from other perspective, is extremely blunt, stims, etc. I am on the spectrum myself and my radar goes off on her.

  • @mistystarbright2764
    @mistystarbright2764 9 лет назад +18

    Why...why would you be offended about this video if you're not autistic if you have no idea what it's even like?
    If anything, you're the one being offensive by being offended by something you know nothing about. It always seems like the people who are most offended are the ones not in the group, like christains changing "christmas break" to "winter break" instead because of Jewish people. I wouldn't mind if it was Hannukah break so why should Jewish people care if it was Christmas break?
    I'm steering off topic. Great video and I can totally see Dash being autistic. I've seen a trend of autistic bronies(not an insult, I'm completely serious when using the term "autistic") liking Rainbow Dash the best. Maybe this is because she's relatable to them?

    • @lilypennvellyn6662

      ***** That point about autistic bronies liking RD best is quite likely actually :) I've noticed this in a lot of fandoms from Sherlock to Steven Universe where if a character is recognised to be showing many autistic traits, it's more often the character that actual autistic people were already especially fond of.

      She didn't even see her fall. She was in the middle of a race and Fluttershy didn't fall until Rainbow was long gone. It's unfair to judge someone for not acting on something they aren't even aware of.

I especially do well with things I have some sort of interest in, big or small. I guess others do that one too, but I can pick up on things faster, as I've found. Sometimes it just needs to be presented differently.

    • @RLYoshi
      @RLYoshi  9 лет назад +2

      Well, yeah, it's fine to care or be uncomfortable, but it's dumb to be offended by it when A) it's obviously not meant to be taken as offensive, and B) you aren't the party being offended here. It'd be like someone from Japan being offended by a joke about Canada. It can make you uncomfortable, as can all jokes, but taking actual offense to it means it's a personal matter, which is rendered moot if you are not in the offended group.
      At least, that's what I've always believed and been told.

      @vincentsissom4180 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Well then, I have quite a bit of info to tell you. Anyone who has a family member with autism will back me up on this. You do so much to help out a family member with autism that you do find offense to anyone talking down someone with autism. They care so much about helping out the family member that they research autism until their fingers bleed off from paper cuts. That is normal for a family member caring for someone with autism. I have Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism, and my family has done so much for me that I wouldn't have my own apt if it wasn't for them. I've done so much, including lock down a job, volunteer at a recovery center, and even greet at my church on a weekly bases, thanks to the help I've received from my friends and family. I wouldn't have gotten to do all that without that help. I didn't have any problem with the video, so I think your fine. Just don't assume how families dealing with autism will take it.

    while I am nearly a year behind in this dialog, I would propose that Rainbow Dash is not Autistic, but ADHD. reasoning behind this is that Dash has control of the traits that are often used when deciding the difference between ADHD and ASD, being that she has full grasp of social norms (sarcasm, joking, etc), shes has a clear and vivid imagination (as shown in a number of episodes) and she has an understanding of gestural communication or simply put, body language and how to use it as is expressed regularly by hoof and wing movements. there are other markers, such as turn-based play, as shown with her being able to stay in line or allow others to participate in an ordered fashion and the other key one, related to social responses, is that her facial expressions and body language reflect her feelings.
    as to further evidence, she has a tough time with sitting and learning, she has to be interacting to some extent, and direct information is harder for her to process. however, the key behind this, is her ability during flight, which is contrasted by Twilight's issues, which is that Dash has heightened awareness. A feature of ADHD is the lack of a filtration process to the brain stem, which is where all sensory information is processed. in turn this causes people with adhd to be highly capable of awareness of their surroundings, while at the same time, in situations of limited information or structured processing, such as classrooms, offices, etc, this becomes a problem as there is no extra information to process which sends the brain into an anxiety fight or flight process because the brain is telling itself there is a problem that does not exist, which creates anxiety. so, by learning while flying, is using her already fully capable learning system to the best efficiency, because she is able to observe everything and process it as information without overloading her brain. to compare this, it is known that in still existing hunter gatherer societies (example South American or African tribes) ADHD has a very high percentage in the population, and this is because while hunting, adhd allows the person to have near total awareness of their surroundings, giving them better ability to coordinate or perceive sign of game animals or hazards. Dash defines this as her requirement to be able to fly safely while Twilight fails to be able to do what she believes is a form of multitasking, where as for Dash, it is how her mind processes the world around her even if she is not actively consciously trying to do so.
    Dash also exhibits another form of ADHD behavior, which is that she shows addictive and thrill seeking behaviors. These are common in those with ADHD due to a deficiency within the brain's "reward system" which is the process in which the brain releases endorphins and dopamine to itself for performing "good" or strenuous activities. this is to say, that perhaps for Dash, exercise does not give her the "feel good" response that many people feel, so she has to push harder and harder, until the endorphine response to injury or near injury occurs, while it is uncertain as to what effects the Apple family Cider has, Dash is shown having addictive drive towards it, just as she does for other things. People with ADHD commonly "self medicate" or seek out drugs and alcohol to replace the deficient reward response, or in some cases, it has been shown to be common among teenage girls with adhd to perform "cutting" as a method to force endorphin release in the brain on a much higher scale than statistically normal teenage girls. Dash has a tendency to push herself to extremes and beyond her limits as well as shown possible addictions. while the pushing herself physically could be a sign of her devotion to her dream, it could be taken that she does so in excess.
    To put this in a more personal level, I understand Dash in this episode, because it is exactly how i made my way through college after struggling every day through k-12 public school. this is because I stopped trying to pay attention and just started creating artwork during lectures, I stopped taking notes and really even paying attention, and while this may seem to not be functional, I had some of the highest scores in my classes and even if the professor asked me a question, i knew where we were in the discussion, even if i didnt consciously recognize it. my best friend on the other hand, is much more akin to Twilight, she has to take notes, very detailed notes and through that she memorizes stuff, but walking around I will notice things like clothing, things out of place, the color of a car, etc, where she only recognizes what is in the direction of focus at that moment, such as what is right in front of her.

    Another example of repetitive actions is in "Read it and Weep", she turned the lamp on and off. She also bounced the ball by just moving her hoof up and down. However, these could just be attributed to boredom, but I can see how it could apply to this theory.

    But anyway that me get to the point
    I personally can see many of the ponies haveing mental disabilities
    Twilight probably has it autism to
    As when she was young saw no need for friends and like you said we find different ways to learn we also find specific topics that we like to learn about the most for me it is anything nerdy and that is why most of us are well nerdy I especially liked doing Science in school and even Dr Albert Einstein was aurtistic so you can see we tend to like science
    And Twilight also has an interest in both science and magic and is pretty much the master of magic
    Also when Twilight gets the tickets for the grand galaping gala she doesn't know which friend to take as she whould not want to disappoint any of them I have also had this trouble Nevver wanting to pick a person as a favourite
    And she has also had brake downs when things don't work

But I mainly liked it because Mare-do-well was a solid hero, she (they?) never basked in the praise, and the Mane Six only praised her to fit in with the crowd so Rainbow Dash (Who is kind of an idiot, to be honest, that's why I hate her so much) wouldn't catch on. Also, the Batman: The Animated Series reference was awesome.
      Also, it's cool to see someone else with high-functioning autism. I always felt like I was the only one with high-functioning autism, though I know that i'm not.

    Actually the chair rocking could show another symptom of autism, also played for laughs. The inability to fade out sensory input. I have autism myself and have that problem, i can't ignore sensory signals and can't filter out the important stuff.
    Rainbow looks around in the room instead of focusing and then notices the squeaking chair. Instead of focusing on the task she is unable to ignore it and keeps squeaking, because of which the only thing she remembers from the lesson is the chair.

    Being autistic (Can i still consider myself autistic when i have Aspergers?) myself i had a really hard time paying attention and couldn't concentrate and no matter how many times my Teachers explained to me what i was supposed to do i still couldn't pay attention, i had mostly problems With Math but when i was in 2nd or 3rd grade one of my Teachers made a Math ''folder?'' With the MLP FIM characters With text Bubbles asking how many this and that was and since they knew i was a huge fan of MLP FIM they thought it could be easier for me to pay attention. I Have always felt very different from the other kids in my class in elementary School, i was never interested in hanging out With other kids during recess and had other interests, like all the other boys in my class was mostly interested in Soccer (football) and the Girls was most interested in either horses or Dolls, i had a huge interest in drawing, computers and animation. One thing that really bothers me about my elementery School was that they forced you to be social and had to be With other kids in recess, and anywhere i went to get to be by myself and get some Peace and quiet i still could hear all the other kids laughing and screaming which annoyed the living hell outta me. Oh, well atleast my parents told my Teachers about my Aspergers and worked hard to make Things easier for me.

    (Ok I don’t know for sure if I’m autistic but I’m getting evaluated soon) I always put off doing my homework and studying for as long as I could then when we had a big test coming up I would literally make myself sick from the panic and stress I felt with it (especially when if it wasn’t reading or writing something I enjoy a lot) I had a hard time retaining any information about it.
    Fanfiction is one of my biggest obsessions (and possibly my most favorite thing ever). When I read something in a fanfic I can remember it even if it wasn’t the main focus of the fic, but if say it’s a science lecture I can’t remember very much of it even though I was paying attention.
    For example I can tell you about a layout of a specific building referenced in my favorite fic. I’ve even learned some science and math from fics but I can’t tell you anything from my science or math classes from public school when I couldn’t learn “my way”. (I’m homeschooled now)
    I’m also very sarcastic
    I hope this made sense and I didn’t ramble for too much of it.

    You say it's kinda dumb to take offense to a video about autism when you don't have autism, but there ARE exceptions. My brother has autism and if anyone called people with autism "retarded" or "dumb" I would bitch slap them and beat them up with common sense. I just wanted to say it, but I took no offense to the video!

      +Isabelle Shelton I understand; I had meant it more like "if you feel _personally attacked_ by this video and you don't have autism, that's dumb". I should've done better with the writing.

      +RLYoshi I actually really liked the script, despite not having much interest in the topic. I really don't have any constructive criticism.

    Did anyone spend fifteen minutes trying to figure out what was written in that one scene where he's talking about how he got limited help from his classmates?

    I learned the triangle as an alligator. I don't have autism but that's how I learned it. I'm a visual learner and don't like long boring explanations without numbers, pictures, letters, writing, or anything happening else. With the pony on the screen it works better. But without your pony, it doesn't stick.

    Hearing you talk about these characteristics reminded me very much of a friend of mine. She has problems with basic social interactions, said herself that she often doesn't pick up on sarcasm or people just goofing around and (this made me realize it) she loves repetitive actions. Maybe I'm overthinking this, but when I visit her she often wants to do things that we have already done once because they were fun back then, as in "You can cook the same dinner, we can play the same game, go to the same place or watch the same movie."
    Does this qualify?

    I'm an Aspie and I find Princess Luna and Rarity extremely relatable when I watch MLP. I tend to be brutally honest and have extreme fixations on certain topics, such as Frozen, RWBY, doll collecting, Health Science, Chemistry, certain novels, and certain fictional characters I feel I could really relate and connect to on a personal level (Queen Elsa, Weiss Schnee, Princess Luna, etc...). Thanks for making this! This theory makes a lot of sense and it would be amazing if it was cannon! Our corrupted human world needs more positive representation of Aspies, Autistic people, and people with any 'neurological difference'(as I like to think of mental disabilities as) or physical disabilities. It's plain unfortunate how society looks down on Autistic people and how many 'peers' make fun of them.

    I'm thinking Rainbow is rocking the Aspergers. I have it and all of these symptoms you labelled sums up me and sums up Rainbow.
