Given how late this guy started playing, and knowing that starting as a kid literally makes it several orders of magnitude easier to develop a good swing,... you get the impression that some people are just built differently. Elite athlete was the correct description!
@@noomade I've seen this all too often. These athletes understand the body and how it moves. It helps them have a swing that's 70-80% there. Then they just need to hire someone to fill in the finer points and they end up single digit handicaps. But thats their thing, they're athletic. If I asked them to learn to write code like I do, they'd be lost. It took me several years to get good at golf and these guys can find it in half the time. But it's still fun to watch them struggle in this game. It takes no prisoners.
@@Real28 Well, I agree generally. The coding thing is not a good comparison though. My main point was about the difference in learning new mechanics after childhood. Of course the person would have needed some form of development of _some_ mechanics and training structure in the first place. Your coding analogy is tantamount to saying that someone who had the potential to be an athlete but never went outside or played any sport and just sat in front of the tv all the time, would be lost trying to learn something at age 30. Yes of course they would. Coding requires some foundations in mental skills that a lot of people don't acquire. I am a pretty good programmer (so I have been told anyway) and I started coding as an adult and it was not my main focus. But then again I have strong background mathematics and went to pretty challenging schools that laid a foundation that allowed me to pick things like that up pretty easily. I was a really good tennis player as kid and was very coachable in all sports, but picked up golf as an adult and it took me so much longer than in it did for all the children in my extended families, who generally were much less capable than I was at their ages. I am confident that had many of these athletes been given my educational background and support structure, they would certainly not be lost when it comes to things such as coding. So many of the athletes you see, come from social structures that never allow them to develop the foundations the first place. Have you seen Magnus Carlson play poker? He started playing poker as an adult and would pass as a pro. It brings me back what I wrote; some people are just built differently! Anyway, just realised I have waffled on for way too long. It's hilarious that professional athletes fell in love with golf for the same reasons that I did. Golf brings that competition back in life and that "wanting to be good" mindset and it feels amazing when things start to click. Love the videos Grant, learning a lot!
one thing ive noticed from all my previous golf instructors/coaches is that they all hammer the idea of positive reinforcement. The beautiful thing about each golf shot is that weather the result is good or bad there is always something positive to take away from it. It can be solid contact, correct alignment or even something as simple as a parallel takeaway.. as a golf instructor it is super important to always omit confidence to the student on any level. Grant does this so so well
It was so sick meeting you yesterday Grant. I could tell you enjoyed every second of the whole event. You seem like a truly genuine guy and I wish you luck in everything you do in the future!
