    I made a small quilt for my granddaughter, she had their first baby and I had them trace his little hand, then each of their hands and my daughter (the grandma) and my hand (great grandma). I traced them in red flannel and cut them out. I made the baby quilt and laid the baby hand at the top, stitched it, then the parents hands under the babies hand with their thumbs touching. Below them at an angle I placed
    the Grandmothers ( my daughter) hand and below that, my hand. I had just started quilting and wish all my other sewing went as well as that. What a nice gift it was and they can save it for him forever. Thank You for letting me share this.

    I made a photo quilt for my granddaughter. When I printed my photos I removed them from the paper and washed the in the washer and dried them in the dryer. Iron them afterwards. There was no fading. Her mom washed it all the time with soap and still hasn't faded after several years.

    I have a heat press so the instructions for using an iron verses a heat press is different. After checking with the manufacturer of the heat press and with June Tailor, Inc. the maker of the Sew-In Colorfast Fabric Sheets for In Jet Printers, it was suggested that the temperature on the heat press should be around 325 degrees and the timing between 30 to 45 seconds. The water bath process remains the same. Hope this will be helpful to others.

    OMG, i've been watching your videos on photo transfers.. all of them...it's late September, but i've already started trying to think what i will be making for Christmas for my nieces. Last year i made memory pillows out of their late grandfathers old sweaters. This year, i received a early bday/or late anniversary present depending on how you want to look at it. my husband bought me my first sewing machine. he was tired of watching me struggle hathnd sewing all my projects. This year i decided (probably above my paygrade right now, but i'm up for a good challenge!) to make a family tree quilt for them. or something of that sort. And your tutorials and advice has been invaluable. if they turn out i'm sure my SILs and my husband will be wanting one as well. they all wanted pillows but unfortunately Mom had already thrown out everything except for these 2 sweaters. they were his favorites, she just hadn't been able to par with them yet. until i told them what i wanted to do with them, and then she gladly gave them to me. Anyting for her granddaughters you know, lol Don't tell my husband, but i was able to get a sweatshir of his dad's i'm making him a pillow for Christmas.. he just doesn't know it. but now i can put a picture on the back!

Also just learned i'm going to have to get new sewing machine. :( mine is not made for quilting at all.

    I haven't had luck with that print paper when used in the past. I soak my fabric in formaldehyde (full hazmat outside, I pretreat a lot of fabric at once and store the rest), let it soak for about half hour to an hour to let the formaldehyde soak in and maybe give it a few stirs during that time. Then I soak in cold water and gently squeeze the formaldehyde out, repeat the soaking and then let dry outside (ideally overnight outside). When the fabric is dry it's ready to use. I iron the fabric (cut to size) on an 8"x"11 piece (cut to size) of freezer paper and print the photos on it just as you did with the sheets you are using. Rinse printed fabric in cold water to allow any ink to run off. Gently squeeze excess water and when just damp, press to set with iron until dry.
    I have a memory quilt I made 20 years ago that has been washed as normal and the pictures are still and bright as day one. I do, however wash the quit in baking soda only and regular liquid fabric softener. I tell those I have made memory quilts for to wash the quilt the same way I do and their quilts are still great looking.
    My method maybe a bit time consuming, however in the long run I get way more photo transfers at more than half the cost. And it's not as dangerous as one may imagine if it is done with care and outside. Also, any left over formaldehyde in the bucket from soaking can be used again. I pour it into an empty plastic bottle.
    I thought I would share this with you and the viewers. ~~~Good Luck all and Happy Quilting as always~~~

      Dee's Quilting thank you for sharing!!! I do like these sheets for the ease of convience....however the cost is HIGH in my opinion so your idea of treating the fabric is great! I've also printed using the freezer paper, however didn't treat the fabric first....I believe that would help a lot!! These sheets are nice.....a bit stiff though. Does the formaldehyde leave any stiffness to the finished photo/fabric?

    • @missdee2318
      @missdee2318 6 лет назад +4

      Now that you mention the stiffness of the sheets I do remember that part and I didn't like that either.
      The formaldehyde does not leave the fabric sticky, stiff or smelly. Actually the formaldehyde really has no order (care should still be taken). The fabric is a tiny bit "crunchy" if you will, though that goes away upon ironing and feels more like if you had starched the fabric, which makes it nice because it be ironed on freezer paper and going through the printer.
      There is still no stiffness at all in the finished product. It is nothing like the fabric photo sheets sold, it feels, looks and acts like nontreated fabric. I hope this helps, if you need more info please let me know.... You have a wonderful channel and I know you are inspiring many and, many are learning a lot .

      You are very welcome!! Should you venture out into this area of fabric photo printing maybe you can do a how to video on it to show how easy and cost saving it is for others to do. My explaining it may scare people because of the "formaldehyde" used. If done and handled right it is rewarding.

    • @anitra7747
      @anitra7747 6 лет назад +6

      Just a word of caution when using formaldehyde. When formaldehyde dries it leaves a residue that is concentrated called paraformaldahyde. It is more caustic and carcinogenic. It dries to a white powdery substance. Please be cautious and rinse with copious amounts of water if you choose to use that method of treating your fabric.

      Annielaurie you know what, I totally agree! While yge photos printed very nicely, they were a bit stiff. I really am hoping after use of the quilt and further laundering the quilt, that they soften up. I'm thinking it's a mix of the type of fabric and the agents used to treat it for color fasting.

    How does this compare to using the 100 label sheets with the iron and retayne? Couldn't you use that method for photos too?

    Hi, someone just asked me today about putting pictures on a quilt they want me to make for them, I'm fairly new quilter. Thanks for showing the whole process. What's the best ink jet printer for a beginner?

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  5 лет назад

      I'm glad this video was helpful Marilyn! Unfortunately I'm not so tech savy, certainly not enough to recommend any type of ink jet printer. For this quilt I used my husband's Epson Artisan 1430 and it worked wonderfully.

    I could just cry. I have spent the past 2 weeks trying to come up with a way to print on fabric for a quilt… bought printer, freezer paper, vinegar, white fabric, ritz dye fixative. What I ended up was vintage looking photos. It was a rag quilt so I got away with. I will be trying. Where was this video 😢

    Hi Lisa! I am new to quilting and your channel. I love all that you do. I wanted to ask if you would recommend using retayne when using the colorfast sheets? Thank you so much for your videos. They are really helping me a lot.

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  2 года назад

      Hello!!! So one of the benefits of the specific Colorfast sheets is that they have been treated so that if you follow the directions on the package.....that is all you should have to do. I've used the sheets many times. While I recommend them for people printing at home, just know they do fade slightly....and the fabric feels a bit "stiff".

    Idk if it's the ink that's not all the way set in the fabric or they just get dirty easily but should I use scothgaurd on them or is the ink not all the way set ?

    Also what ink jet printer do you have?

      I still really like these sheets, although I haven't used them a lot since then to be honest. When I did this quilt I had to use my hubby's Epson Artisan printer.
