When I was a kid in rural Michigan, we had a doberman pincher- never docked her tail or cropped her ears- she looked like a sweet hound dog! ❤
Anyway, I'd point and say "get it, Spice!" She'd leap up high on her tall legs, graceful like a gazelle on the Serengeti, and then pounce on the mole hole! The dirt would fly and you could hear her snort breathe in the mole hole lol! She caught more moles than we could count! We sure had had a whole lotta holes though! 😂 Had to fill those in, but, man, she loved her job. 👍❤😂

I saw your trap at the hardware store the other day, and I could see clumsy old me snapping a finger off! 😊… So I bought the next in line which is like a trap inside a box. it says on the instructions to buy two of them and put them in end to end… And now with your terrific explanation I’m off to the hardware store tomorrow to buy that second one. They’re making a terrible mess of my yard, so can’t wait to set them up…now that I know how! I’m now a new subscriber. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!!!

We had cats that would catch moles whenever they would come up for air. We also used a trap to catch moles within 25 hours. My mother had great success with traps. She taught my husband how to use a trap. I have also heard of people shooting them. If you can see the dirt moving, the mole is active in the tunnel. Stand over the dirt pile and shoot straight down.

Outstanding video! Great tips on moles and birds. I’ve been researching beneficial nematodes that target the grubs. No grubs= no moles so they say. You’d likely enjoy the way nematodes work, much like that movie “Aliens”. However you’ve already stated that fleas are not an issue on your land. That means you already have a good population of beneficial nematodes. There are three main types though and one goes after fleas another type hunts deeper for grubs. Beautiful farm btw, be safe.

We have moles. They are part of the ecosystem. Including, but not limited to, helping to loosen and aerate the soil and they eat grubs that would otherwise grow into adults that eat your plants, So they are not a "problem". but simply something to manage, because they mostly are a benefit, long term. And there are plenty of non-lethal ways to keep them out of your vegetables if you simply wanted to take the time and effort to implement them..

    • @GoodSimpleLiving

@@zapyawhereithurts Glad to see you are also interested in non-leathal control of moles. My "great idea" was simply to point out there were non-leathal options out there, and people might want to learn about "them". 😀 Google search is a good place to start of course. I did not mention any one in particular because different methods may not work well for some people, and I think people should do enough research to find the option that works best for them. Hope this helps.

Saint Coemgen I thought you had a tried and true method. I’m always afraid I’ll wake up and find they like banana peels and start digging again. So, I have a couple of questions that I hope you guys, or someone else with experience can help me with.
I've NEVER had to deal with moles. I'm also in Eastern NC where our soil is super sandy so building up a bridge for a trap is next to impossible unless I maybe wet some of the sandy soil to build it up? Also, do I need to find their main entry point or is anywhere along the path okay? Also, is it normally just one mole or multiple moles?
Sorry for so many questions. I'm in my mid 40s so experiencing moles for the first time has me baffled.
I've had chickens for 2 years and just recently started noticing the raise ground that is smooshy and I'm not even cool with moles. I have to get rid of those suckers.

I used to set mole traps until I saw my dogs actually tracking them in their tunnels. Now, every once in a while, I’ll find a dead mole in the yard. The dogs won’t eat them, but they do make great chew toys. I’ve also found possums, raccoons, squirrels and rabbits. Anything that ventures onto my three acres usually doesn’t get much of a chance to share the experience.

silverfox199686 The only issue with the plant nicknamed “mole plant” is that it’s poisonous. I personally wouldn’t recommend it it you have kids who might be touchy, or any animals who eat basically everything they see.

Two points just for thought. 1: put the dead mole back in the hole. If you don't you have put up a sign free new home to your next mole. 2: a 15 minute road flare lit and placed in the tunnel then covered with dirt and sod gets the babies and the other parent. From a husbands point of view "Wife now has been trained to perform this function move on Dad"😈

@10.50 you say you read online and didn 't know if it is true, let's us bust the myth. It would be impossible for a Mole to stay still for 24 hours as it would starve to death. It needs to eat 50 to 70% of it's body weight over 3 active periods a day. For me in the same situation would need to eat 35kg of beef in 3 x 11.6kg sessions. So if that is what my metabolism needed, how long would I survive if nutrient was witheld?

    • @GoodSimpleLiving
      @GoodSimpleLiving  4 года назад

You'd survive a lot longer than 24 hrs.

My mother was an mole trapper first class with a 100% kill rate. She never went to all the trouble you do. In fact she sometimes caught them alive just from observing movement in the dirt piles. Thanks to her efforts, we no longer have a mole problem. Of course, we no longer have a garden due to circumstances I won’t go into here. We no longer have a mole problem since we no longer have garden roots for them to eat. They will eat the roots from most garden veggies.

I was working late shift when I received a call about a supposedly "black snake" terrorizing someone at an open terrace apartment complex which had a huge garden that ran down the center on two sides. It had just finishing raining as I walked up to the concerned caller when some movement caught my eye, so as I looked down I activated my Maglite. I noticed the ground moving up then back down in a steady forward movement, "well what is this we have here I wondered?" All of a sudden I noticed its small head with what appeared to be closed eyes & a small elephant like trunk "pop up" (well that is no snake) to check what kind of obstacle (a rock) it was running into, after a few seconds it went back down and tried to burrow away again, well we cannot have this I thought, digging without a license, I smiled, reached down and carefully took hold of it, amazed at its burrowing strength as it tried it's hardest to crawl away. Later I put it into a small shoe box to show it off to all the guys and gals, what a great memory, it was my 1st apprehension of a felony mole. ;-D
