    I am glad to be able to identify a vole now. I'm in Virginia now, but in central Kentucky (Frankfort) I had a real problem with these rodents. They mainly did their damage during the winter, I could see their lines in the snow, we did not get very deep snows usually. In the spring when the snow melted we could see exactly what you showed, open lines dug all over our yard. When it rained it would funnel through those lines and cause even more erosion damage. We also had problems with moles, they did more damage than the voles, the moles I encountered were much smaller than the one you displayed, but definitely a mole. I will keep an eye out here in Virginia for rodents, moles maybe they won't be a problem here. Who knows what other critters I will find. Thank you for this great content.

    I appreciate your identifying these guys for me.
    All last year when I started to notice tunnels I'd thought I had moles. I'm from Montana now I'm in Ohio so the varmints are a little different.
    Since I'd thought I had moles I put out a couple poisons. It's not my preferred way of stopping these guys nor did it work.
    I'm not sure yet if gofers and moles need different types of poisoning but since I put moles poison out and I had gofers that might explain things.
    What has happened is that I've had an invasion! I've got tunnels EVERYWHERE!
    So far I don't think I've evicted one gofer. But at least now I know they are gofers and I've found your video site....
    Thanks

    Hey Shawn, I moved from SoCal (gophers & moles) to just outside Minneapolis. Our house was built farm land so I had no clue about voles. As I'm pretty tiddy about mowing my lawn, I would bag the grass clippings & take to city compost sight. Well, vole tunnels & nests started appearing all over my backyard. As I got tired of having to drive to the compost sight & I decided start mulching the grass. All of a sudden the vole infestation stopped. No more tunnels or nests. I'm thinking of writing to the U of Minn agriculture dept & see if they have an explanation. Thought you'd like to know.

    I thought what my cat caught outside was a wee bigger than the mice he’s caught in my house. It was a vole 😳 We have an open field in front with those type of holes. Caught him one time meowing at one. Good info! Thanks

    Can moles attack root crops like carrots, radishes, potatoes, etc.? Tunneling invaders have wreaked havoc on ours a few times. Mounds made me think they were moles, and the ones I caught looked like moles, but much smaller than yours and with light brown fur similar to your vole.

    • @MrJeepinZeke
      @MrJeepinZeke 6 лет назад +9

      I know Voles can be root eaters. My Grandma had one that ate the roots strait off a plant but you didn’t know it until you picked up the plant and it’d have no roots!

      Zeke770 last year we started building raised box beds to alleviate some of the back strain weeding and such. Nailed flashing on the legs so rodents would have a tough time climbing. So far, so good!! :)

      Moles eat bugs and state soil. Voila and gophers are herbivores and eat plant parts.

    "these are the moles they're pretty big in my area"
    lol your not kidding the moles in my backyard are barely a quarter that size, they fall in my pool and die all the time. Also those vole holes look almost identical to the chipmunk tunnels I have all over my property.

    This is good to know as I now realize I have Gophers. I have pest control already working on it as I spent a lot of money in my backyard on rock and concrete and they are damaging the rock area. Unfortunately I am also dealing with roof rats. Thankfully they have not gotten in my house. Of course I do have cats and if they did get in, well, I think y'all know what would happen. But I have had my attic checked and they have not gotten in.
