Hedon is an experimental mix of classic and modern action game design running on the GZDoom Engine and bearing bits of inspiration from titles such as Hexen, Unreal or Arx Fatalis.
➣ Sprawling levels that offer a degree of freedom and don't hold the player's hand. Exploring, hunting secrets, backtracking, patience and having to figure out what to do next is key. Monsters and pickups are hand-placed and vary according to the difficulty you play on.
➣ Original story packed with lots of lore and doubled by a permeating atmosphere. Intensive attention to detail and world building.
➣ Gory, fast paced shooting, a solid arsenal of weapons and magic items. Combat is projectile-based, movement is essential, enemies are unique and vary in type and abilities.
➣ Original soundtrack ranging from tense to serene ambient, spiced up with bursts of metal. Also, did I mention the legendary Alexander Brandon? If you enjoyed the Unreal and Deus Ex soundtracks, you're in for a treat!
➣ Thousands of hours of work put into an original concept, digitally hand-drawn graphics (textures, sprites, frame by frame animations etc.), scripting, sound effects and level design, all by a one man dev team aiming to create a unique game with a unique atmosphere.
➣ Six to eight hours of good 'ol singleplayer action with five difficulties including Brutalizing, which changes the gameplay to allow interesting second playthroughs (different fights & pick-ups, companions etc.).
➣ It's very light on storage (under 300mb) and well optimized. It's also portable so no DRM and no online ties either - you buy it, it's yours! Игры

You should realllllly research the history of this game(its based on futanari erotica i think?) before you talk about how hot Zan is. I'm not here to kinkshame but, uh, afaik the creator of the mod himself either makes or commisions erotic art of her which stopped my research pretty quickly after i started running across them and they seemed to be official.
So uhhhh yeah either Gman likes futa girls or he didn't do his homework. Again.
Secret golden third option: Don't talk about how sexy a video game character looks in a public forum...
Looking forward to Hardon where you crush enemies with your thighs

I remember following you a good number of years before even thinking about getting into game development. Seeing my thing here still feels pretty surreal now. Thanks a lot for covering it, dude.
The only thing I need to mention is that at 3:40 it's not Alexander Brandon's track per se, it's a cover of his Underworld by Shivaxi and Xenofish :^)
Wow, I cannot believe the official creator of the game is on Gman video!
It's incredible what you yourself have acheived with Hedon, but I got a question.
Why you decided to use the Doom Engine? It's not because I find it a bad engine, but because of what this review showed me, it seems like your game would benefit more if it used another more powerful one.
Congratulations for your game nonetheless!
@@lonelyheartproductions5237 GZDoom is actually pretty spot on for what I had in mind. The limitations it has kinda help out when you're a one man dev team because you don't need to invest a lot of time into pointless fancy graphics and detail, and focus what truly matters regarding a classic inspired game. Also, it felt like a good place to start considering I had 0 game development or programming experience when I began working on it.
Although I came back and added a lot of polish to the first maps, they show how Hedon and my skills evolved during development. I worked on it level by level meaning that when I'd finish a level, it usually had all the assets and scripts it required too, so this results in things like how monsters and weapons are slowly introduced because of my work style and flow. That's also why the first monsters look crappier for example, because I usually got better along the way. It also shows in the graphics and audio improving, with Akhzul (Hedon's dedicated OST composer) starting to make soundtracks along me finishing the levels - Cold Rock is both my first map and his first OST, so yeah, we pretty much started from 0 and improved along the way.
One thing has never varied or changed and that's the mentality with which I went into this. I never wanted Hedon to appeal to the mass or God forbid the market, but be a purely subjective experience cultivating things that the triple A industry no longer has the balls or interest to do.
It's "hee-done" not "head-on", right? 😂😂
@@dizzysic2587 No, it's "head-on", as in a head on approach.
I wish I could pin this comment to shut up the 50 people who commented on how I “mispronounced” it.

But seriously, anybody willing to put in 2 years of their life into something should be able to make some money off of it, especially if it's a retro shooter that's actually fun to play.

i'm probably about halfway through this game and i love it to bits. as for the money aspect of it - a LOT of work has gone into it and that's really all that should count. support for this kind of thing should absolutely not be a problem, regardless of what shoulders it was built off of.
Paid mods are cringe bro
On the topic of paying for mods. I think you can charge for them if you don't use doom itself or any of its assets. Basically you can't charge for a mod like brutal doom but hedon is fine
Yep. A good example of this is Strife.

As always, thanks for the frequent and absolutely awesome videos! You easily have one of the best gaming channels on RUclips.
GZDoom is under GPL v3 license which allows them to use it in a commercial setting, they have that right as long as any modifications to the source code are published under the same license.
i get the opposing opinions about it being a TC mod then being sold, but honestly, i see this a way to directly support the creator and it continues to bring more retro throwback shooters to the consumer market, potentially inspiring more works to do the same
Considering the amount of work put in such a TC I think it's definitely justified to end up simply making it as a full game you can sell. Plus it's not like they go around the internet to find and C&D every single upload of the previously free versions.
This game is so fucking good! Loved it since I played it when it was only a mod. Thanks for covering it dude, it needs more exposure

played this mod, bought on Steam, hope the retail version will be worth my money. One of the rarest cases where devs throw old classic names as "inspiration" and you can clearly see it. Hedon feels like Arx Fatalis in reverse, where you start from the bottom levels (there were slaughter on last level, and it's dwarfs domain, forges etc.) to upper levels.
Alexander Brandon ftw. made soundtracks for my childhood (like Deus Ex which was like X-Files The Game for me back then).
Also - give some love for Ashen2063, it's great.

If you bought Ion Maiden then you technically bought a "Duke Nukem 3D mod"
I mean if the metagame is so vastly different, content so high-quality, etc, it doesn't matter if it was free or not, do what DooM 1 did and release a shareware episode.
*_Bring Back The Game Demos!_*
Ion maiden is made in EDuke32, a source port of the build engine. Might be stretching the definition there.
@@Keanotix For sure, they just made a new game on an old open source engine, totally do-able, Hedon just does the same thing.
Now how can I do this? I could make a free or 99 cent Itch.io game with completely new mechanics, but I don't know how some people get a hold of GZDoom source code or get proper rights to modify it and then use it for commercial purposes. Is it still commercial if it's released for free even though it would draw attention to maybe my social media where I would essentially be shilling other games that are being sold?

Ten years making that full-on original game from the Doom engine.
I've been itching to do something similar for a few years now, but there's just no way I can manage to put ten straight years into such a project.
Making a whole video game as a solo project is hard, but I can never manage to stay focused on one game idea for long enough to turn it into a reality.
Mad props to this guy for pulling off what I never could.
I personally loved this project, and the amount of work that has gone into it's presentation and lore is phenomenal for a mod. Definitely agree it needs more attention.
Are there actually people who are upset that the dev is charging money for 2 years of incredibly hard work? The dev is a madlad for giving so much of the game away for free. Even the demo on Steam is huge. Only someone who has never actually tried to make something could feel that way. Artists need to eat too you know. Would you rather this guy was flipping burgers, or would you rather he had more time to make more awesome stuff like this?
Considering all the assests are original, it's less like a mod and more like a separate game using the same engine.

It bothered me at first too, then I remembered that I've heard it pronounced with both a long and short E several times each. I assume both are correct.
HEDONISM APPLY DIRECTLY TO FOREHEAD
@VoidKeeper HEDON, a municipal borough in the Holderness parliamentary division of the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, 8 m.
According to tradition the men of Hedon received a charter of liberties from King lEthelstan, but there is no evidence to prove this or indeed to prove any settlement in the town until after the Conquest.
By it the king granted to William, count of Albemarle, free borough rights in Hedon so that his burgesses there might hold of him as freely and quietly as the burgesses of York or Lincoln held of the king.
Granted to Edmund, earl of Lancaster, and Avelina his wife, then lord and lady of the manor, the right of holding a fair at Hedon on the eve, day, and morrow of the feast of St Augustine and for five following days.
In 1280 it was found by an inquisition that the men of Hedon "were few and poor" and that if the town were demised at a fee-farm rent the town might improve.
It's "hee-dun", like in "hedonist". Gman linked to an incorrect pronunciation, making him wrong twice. Furthermore, he is pronouncing it with two long vowels in his video, which doesn't even match the pronunciation in the linked video, which is a long vowel followed by a short vowel.

If we're going to call every game made in a preexisting engine a "mod" then just about everything is a mod.
It's only a mod if it requires some other game to run. While CS was a mod, you needed half life to play it. It then became it's own game. HL and DeusEx were never mods, the creators had acquired the rights to modify and distribute the engines, so you didn't need quake or unreal to play HL or DX.

My good sir, four long years have passed since you have left this comment on the virtual walls of the internet, and it is on this fateful day that your pertinent commentary receives the reply it deserves. Though I cannot pretend I know too much about this game, given that I am only four missions and ten hours into its progress, I can comment that it is not simply "a new game on the doom engine with similar mechanics". The game itself requires patience and immersion into the hellish, and at times peaceful and rustic, landscape. The atmosphere is dense as you search around an Orcish town for a specific key or an ingredient required to create a magical ink in the abandoned and war-torn alchemist's shop. Thus, it focuses much more on exploration and attention to detail than its inspiration and foundation, Doom. Rather, it reminds me much more of the stealth masterpieces, Thief: Gold and Thief 2: The Metal Age, which happen to be my favorite games and indispensable flavours of my soul. Similarly to the Thief games, Hedon asks you to bathe yourself in its world and atmosphere and to accept that deciphering the mysteries of the world requires a patient eye. I am also of the conviction that a game is as good as its story (if it has one), and Hedon presents the world gradually through visual cues and readable letters, private notes, books, and signs, a possible Thief inspiration. Yet what Hedon does differently is to somehow balance this exploration with moment of sheer action where you shoot down stubborn magicians and then fling a bloody axe at a hellish hound. I am not certain how it works, yet somehow the exploration and atmosphere, the adrenaline and violence, and the enchanting Orc women who are of a divine level of bravery and thickness, balance one another to create a novel and joyful experience. I also don't know why i just typed that whole thing in a dramatic British delivery but hey, life be weird like dat sometimes knawmean Anyway this is the end of the comment, think about what I said and never forget that the limits of your opinion, which was a mere stereotype of a more nuanced work of art, sparked an entire dialogue worlds apart because someone wanted to tell you that you are missing out if you don't discard your opinion and play this game. Dare to let yourself be changed by that which you do not know, this is my advice and the lesson I have learned by playing such games of beauty. Now taa-taa old chap TL;DR: Big Orc mommy / Extra thicc dummy / Exploration super yummy
Please do a review of Spec Ops the Line

There's a demo out now on steam, highly recommend it! The games pacing and level design is really oldschool yet unique, I think it serve's the dark fantasy theme well that you have to scour the map and pay attention to your surroundings to get through levels. It has more story/ world building than you'd think but not enough to get in the way of the hand drawn sprites or that curvy blue booty.
