    This one, Strife, System Shock- it's incredible how far ahead games like that were.

      @aquawalrus  7 месяцев назад

      It's truly mind boggling the strides those games took.
      I'm actually playing the original System Shock right now, and it's just wild that it is only a year separated from the release of DOOM. It has so many features that are still mainstays to this day.

    I adored this game as a kid, it really captured my imagination and was, even more than Bladerunner, responsible for my early fascination with the cyberpunk genre. The graphics blew my mind, and i remember being so excited when i heard dialog -- the first time i ever heard voice acting or "interactable" npcs in an FPS. Much like Strife shortly after, i was really taken with this early cross-genre game in a market saturated with Doom clones, and was really disappointed this wasn't the direction gaming went in until years later (what felt like an eternity in my formative years). Thanks for giving this game its due!

      This game was a huge part of what formed my gaming tastes as a kid for sure. I remember I even had the official strategy guide for it, spent hours pouring over that thing time and time again.
      I just wish I still had it. Maybe one day I'll track down a copy!

    Discovered your channel today by chance, a youtube recommendation showed your fallout review, and i loved it. You got another subscribed, mate! I would like to suggest you to review Fallout Tactics, one of the games of the fallout franchise that some part of the fanbase dont like since its more a tactical game in the Fallout universe than an rpg, but it's a really good game, with good atmosphere and art style that perfectly captures the Fallout feel and style, and that improved the original games in the combat aspect of it. I believe it deserves more appreciation than it has, for sure. If you want to try it, there are some mods that improve the game to modern systems and correct some bugs and crashes.
    Love your selection of games mate, both old school 90s fps games and rpgs, i loved it!

    hey bro i just wanted to say i loved the video and hope to see more from your channel in the future! i found out about this game due to Harvey Smith (Deus Ex and Dishonored developer) having worked on it. I love this era of 90s gaming and am playing thru the OG System shock right now and im planning on playing the Dark Sun RPGs next. Anyway, subscribed and keep it up!

      I'm glad you liked the video, this game is truly the definition of a hidden gem. I actually didn't know it had cross development with Deus Ex, that's really interesting to hear as it's another of my favorites.
      OG System Shock is definitely on my short list to play soon as well, somehow I've never played it despite it checking pretty much every box for a game I would like.

    I absolutely love this game. When I was very little, I'd watch my dad play and sometimes he would let me press spacebar to shoot. Was hella scared of the ghouls inside the houses lol. When I was a bit older, I played the game myself but neither me or my dad finished it. Couldn't find this game online until a friend found it and it made me so happy. No idea where our cdrom is, probably in a box with other old games, but don't think win10 can run it rotflmao.
    Lovely video! Very nostalgic. Haven't seen a proper vid like this on this game until now(and I was looking for the ost haha).

    • @aquawalrus
      @aquawalrus  5 месяцев назад +1

      The ghouls freaked me out too, I always thought they would have the electric powers. If you do have a physical version of it I'm jealous, I was actually looking to see what a boxed version of the game costs and people are selling them from anywhere between 100-200$. Pretty wild.
      This is probably one of my favorite games ever, glad you enjoyed the video!

      @@aquawalrus Even years later, they still gives the creeps XD
      After giving it some thought, I'm positive that we still have the cdrom. We never throw away or sell our disks. Those prices *are* pretty wild. Didn't expect people to put such high prices for a game like this one.
      You're welcome! I barely hear people talk about this game so it's really neat finding a video like yours! I'm definitely planning on seeing if I can revisit the game one day and try finishing it.

    • @aquawalrus
      @aquawalrus  4 месяца назад

      If you do revisit it, it's actually pretty easy to get going on DOS Box. If you can get through the first level and get used to the somewhat wonky controls, it still holds up great!
      I wish I had the foresight to keep my physical games! I still have most my GameCube and Xbox stuff, but anything older than that was sold by my younger self to pay for more games. A vicious cycle!

    CyberMage was more Shadowrun then Cyberpunk 20XX IMO. Fortunately I love both tabletop RPG franchises so I loved this as well. Though this is one of many FPS games where I honestly wonder why there's no projectile Shotguns in this and why the Submachine Gun is burst fire, if memory serves, instead of full-auto I think the Laser is full auto but burst fire only and Submachine Gun is just a wrong combination IMO. Yes I'm sure there are some IRL but when I go to a Submachine Gun in a game I don't want it to stop firing unless its overheated (in appropriate games), out of charge, the clip is empty or I stop pressing the fire button.
    Edit: And apparently there is a Shotgun I just never found it or forgot it somehow, and it wasn't listed in the Cybermage weapon list I found online.
    Maybe the slum inhabitants are failed clones, aren't clones at all, or are kept around in case the corporations need human test subjects for experiments.
    Edit 2: Ahh by Shotgun you meant the Blast Rifle. A nice weapon but an energy weapon not a projectile weapon so maybe I was remembering correctly about there not being a conventional Shotgun. And I thought the Plasma Rifle was closer to a Shotgun then the Blast Rifle but its been decades since I played this.

    • @aquawalrus
      @aquawalrus  7 месяцев назад

      Im gonna be honest, I actually didn't know much about Shadowrun but just looked it up, the setting looks super interesting I'm going to have to look more into that it looks right up my alley in terms of setting, and you're totally right that fits as a comparison way better than cyberpunk.
      Totally agree on the sub machine gun as well, the game did lack that real full on auto weapon. Everything being either burst or single shot.
      I think I've always called the blast rifle the shotgun in this game, as it sort of looks like a futuristic shotgun, but yeah a true shotgun would have been a nice inclusion in the game.

    • @aquawalrus
      @aquawalrus  Месяц назад +1

      @@G00berella that's a really good question for resolution... I think it runs in 640x480 natively, then DOSbox stretches it to fit fullsceen. I recorded in 1920x1080, that might explain why my recording looks proper while my actual gameplay looked stretched.

    You don't understand why it didn't get more attention, and still doesn't? It's horrible to look at, it's horrible to listen to, and it's horrible to play. Doesn't matter how many features it has if they're all half-baked and unentertaining. The fact that the story is terrible doesn't help things.
    I respect what this game tried to do but it doesn't change the fact that it's one of the ugliest, worst sounding, jankiest, half-working pieces of shite I've ever had the misfortune of playing. Thankfully D.W. Bradley got to make Wizards & Warriors before he retired, so at least this rancid turd wasn't his swansong.
    It's no wonder we have a source ports for obscure Russian and Taiwanese bootlegs yet no one has bothered with this game. That really says everything you need to know.
