Fun trip! Looks like you did really well fishing! The crawdad catching at night made me laugh. :) Glad you had a good time!

Enjoyed your video. I’ve been there a couple times as well and the fishing was awesome. Like your kayak setup

Not often you see kayaks in the BWCAW. I hope you enjoyed our beautiful state. Cool footage!

Current pike casualties was funny. Me and my son went this year for first time and I lost 15 frog hooks by the 3rd day. Avg about 8-10 bass a hr though. Prime waters for smallies.

It is a great smallie lake. We were early for serious frog fishing. A lot of soft plastics. Lost a couple dozen jig heads in rocks.

How bad was portaging the yaks. I would love to take mine instead of a canoe

Thankful, with three guys it isn't terrible. But obviously more work and heavier than a canoe. We all have the same kayak and they are heavy. 80lbs dry. Add on seat, tackle, etc, and its 100+. But two guys carry kayaks and we rotate. There is only one real portage, the other one we can get out and wade through a small channel and leave all our gear on the kayak. We notices the canoers couldn't do that. They sat too low.

What an awesome video... Would you ever consider offering your expertise as a fishing coach? I'd be very interested in supporting you in exchange for knowledge/advice!

Last year was my first time to The boundary Waters and my first real attempt at fishing. I bought a $50 rod and reel combo from fleet farm and "The 5 essential fishing lures for the Boundary Waters" suggested on the Friends of The boundary Waters website. We were there in May... Fished for about 90mins in mid afternoon and were totally skunked. Not even one nibble.
This year we will be going back in October. I have $500 that I'm willing to spend towards a better experience and load of enthusiasm for learning your sport.
So... What advice do you have for a TOTAL NEWB? Specifically...
What Rod/reel setup would you suggest?
If you could only bring 2 or 3 lures with you, what would you bring?
What times of day are best, and what would your strategy be if you were there in October? (Deep/shallow water etc)

@@thomasstandish8848 We have only been in the spring, but I would imagine fall fishing would be good also. October could be cold. Fish would likely be eating actively in the fall. I would recommend a medium light to medium rod. As far as tackle, I always want to have options to cover the entire water column. So top water (whopper popper or similar), jerk bait or shallow crank (5-7 feet), deeper crank bait (8-12), and bottom (soft plastics - Ned rigs, senkos, crawfish patterns). As far as colors, it really depends on the lake(s) you will be fishing. There are crystal clear lakes up there and some are darker and stained. But most are very rocky, so crawfish are a good food source. Reds, Rust, black, dark blue, all good colors. Fish all the rocky shore lines, islands, weed lines. Depends on what you are targeting too. Smallmouth like moving water, so look for the up current and down current that flows around islands and exposed rocky structures. Most all of the boundaries is a flowage so there is some natural current even if ti isnt noticeable. Good luck!!

I admit I didn't watch 100% of the video, so I apologize if this was actually covered. I wish there would be more commentary about lures/bait you're using and what depth you're fishing at. There's a lot of BWCA fishing videos that just show the catching of the fish and not any details about how they were caught. I'm a total newb and want to learn how, when, and where to catch fish.

We were using Ned rigs, jerk baits, and whopper ploppers. An occasional spinner bait. But most fish came in Ned rigs & whopper plopper. Mostly shore lines. 2-8 ft water. Around rocky structure.
