I find it interesting, that your son is a metal enthusiast and you don't appear to discourage him, i respect that alot. Chuck was dealing with the cancer that finally killed him 3 years later... he was truly dealing with the power of the flesh and his own mortality... perhaps the most intimate album ever written.
Lord Zaber #2 Benton is kind of weak now in his old age. Wasn’t it like two years ago that he didn’t want to book tour that would have him playing shows around Christmas time.
Death brought me closer to GOD. RIP Chuck. His lyrics. That music. It seriously brought God to me. Now God is everywhere I look. Everywhere I feel. Everywhere I simply ask for him. Blessed.
By the time this album was written, Chuck wasn't happy with using the band name Death anymore. He felt that it didn't represent the lyrics anymore, since he had evolved into a much deeper level of writing. And btw, I am in no way a Christian, and I appreciate the open mindedness of the Pastor. Great video and a great choice of songs guys!
In Fact, this was meant to be the last Death studio album, as Chuck was focusing on Control Denied since 1996. There are songs on The Sound of Perseverance that were written for Control Denied, like Bite the Pain, Story to Tell, Voice of The Soul and A Moment of Clarity.
@@vlcervo7371 Yes, that is all true. It would have been sad to not get another Death album. But the release of that long "in the works" 2nd Control Denied album would be great. Too many complications though, so it'll probably never happen.
@@Vampyre_Media I guess so, Eric Greif already wrote that. "There will unfortunately not be a second Control Denied album. That's from the officla Death on FB.
Death is probably one of my favorite bands of all time. Chuck had very meaningful lyrics, one of a kind riffs and he will be deeply missed. My favorite song off the sounds of perseverance album is " story to tell" it is written so well. It's like 4 songs in one ro me. But I agree. He is doing a good job.
As much as Death is my all time favourite band, his lyrics actually became meaningful and philosophical after he started reading Nietzsche's and Socrates' writings, among with the proggresive shift in the music with 1990 Human. Lyrics on gory death and disease from the first albums cant really be called "meaningful".
codro1982 I have alot of respect for death and their influence, but I've never actually been the hugest fan of their music, the sound quality is really sub par, not necessarily their fault but I wished it could be re mastered with more modern recording equipment
i wonder what he would say about the crystal mountain lyrics. i did not think chuck was saying "cross turned dagger" for a long time. more like crusty...
@@Fausto_4841 That song is not anti-christian, read Chuck's own explanation of that song. He himself says he's cool with religion. Chuck says the song is about those who twist religion to something bad. The lyrics make it obvious that this is infact the case. Crystal Mountain, "where commandments are reborn". "cross turned dagger" "twisting your eyes to perceive what you want"
This was on Death's last album, and by this point in their career, they had pretty much transcended beyond death metal into more of a progressive metal band. In fact, from what i understand this was actually intended to be the first album of Chuck's follow-up band, Control Denied, and was supposed to have clean singing vocals, but the label insisted that he record harsher vocals for it and release it under the name Death. How crazy is that!
this is great. i'm a pastors kid thats also into metal. my dad is a guitar player and has never told what i can and cant listen to. I am a christian myself and that should not be a limiting factor as to what kind of music i get to enjoy (god crafted my interests in fact).the day after i go to concerts whether it be slipknot, slayer, or the likes, he aways asks how it is and is genuinely interested in my experience with the music i enjoy. i salute you robert
I'm also a Christian. You have to look at music as music, understand what the lyrics are trying to invoke and don't allow it to have power over you. Once you're conscious of it it has no power over you.

You're talking about the best metal band of all times, dude. Chuck was not only a hell of a guitarist, the best of all times to me, but he was a true philosopher. For a Christian, Atheist, Muslim, whatever, his music is just Pure Art ;)
@Max Campo Death is the best band to me, and Chuck is my favourite guitarist of all times. He was a revolutionary and invented a musical style on his own.
@@mayhem_rocker6308 he can't understand probably. But it's his taste, we must respect that. Even if Chuck is the God of Guitarists and he just committed a blasphemy, but it's OK, Chuck is a cool dude and will forgive him
@Max Campo Are you joking? As someone who personally knows a couple past members of Rings, everything was so forced and just made to shock. Ultu Ulla was the best album. That one wasn't just mindless shredding. All the other bands aren't even close to the tier that Death is on. One of the few bands I believe beats out Death is Opeth. Go listen to the entirety of My Arms, Your Hearse and tell me that those bands are better than Opeth
Just to add a true story. I went to a rehab called Times of refreshing. It was a Seventh Day Adventist based place. I was having hard times and one day i found a guitar in a closet . I played it for about 2 days and all of a sudden the door burst open and an old mean lady named Barbara came in and snatched the guitar. She said the Devils music would not be played in that place. I was broken. I was playing Its been A while by staind . I packed my bags and walked from Georgia to Clarksville tn. The trip on foot from the Ocoee river, through Copperstown, etc etc changed me and helped more than the closed minded fools i left. Thanks for being cool the world needs more of Christians like you.
The pastor is right on. As a Christian and metal fan, I take what is good and spit out the bones. Some of this extreme metal stuff has a great message. I got into metal with the song "Master of Puppets," and I've never experimented with drugs because God convicted me to never make anything else my MASTER, MASTER! haha
I'm happy to see you guys doing this, I am a Christian but I love this type of music, I have been known to listen to slipknot while getting ready for church, I love that you have an open mind over music keep it up and I will be here watching you guys
Death was one of the best technical death metal bands ever. Most people arent on the level to understand Chucks lyrics. Many thrash and death metal bands speak hard core truth, thats why Al and Tipper Gore started the PMRC. Megadeath is another band that really grinds and speaks biblical truth. I enjoyed the pastors words afterward, very relevant to the song.
I've always thought Chuck's voice was at its best in Symbolic, it got a little high-pitched for this album (though the musicianship is top notch). Try "Crystal Mountain" from Symbolic! Thank you for these videos, by the way. I started with the Tool ones and am hoping you do more of those too! You guys are awesome.
I prefer his early voice in Scream Bloody Gore and Leprosy. Sounds really raw, brutal and primitive. The later high pitch voice is great too, but if i have to choose, i choose the early brutal voice.
Wow. As a father and someone who has been, essentially condemned by religious figures during my life. Whether it be pastors, priests, chaplains, whatever title those "leaders of the church" have held, solely from my experience, this is somewhat refreshing on different levels. One, I want to most point out, is the fact you did this with your son. I could see in his reaction that he obviously loves metal music of different origins, but he is your son and the thing that stands out the most, is the fact that you as his father, encourage him and share memories in listening to and experiencing the music he is into. So many parents, regardless of religious affiliation, tell their kids that is devils music, or you're going to hell for listening to that or wearing the clothes you wear. So thank you for being open minded, taking your sons thoughts and likes into consideration. This has not been enough to fully convert me, but as a father, watching a father and son share the experience, epic win. Also, when I say "condemned" i do not mean that literally, but I had several friends pass away before we graduated high school and the mothers of those friends asked us to wear our favorite band t-shirts to the funeral, at which point, the pastor presiding, decided to go into this long sermon about how all of us "kids" were "damned to hell" for the music we listen to and the shirts we were wearing. It was very disheartening considering we were there to mourn the loss of a loved one, not to be preached at for our clothes or musical interests. It was supposed to be a remembrance of life, not a condemnation from a priest.
R.I.P. Chuck, gone before your time. It's amazing how people are still discovering one of the greatest, and true originators of the genre. True musicians, in every way.

I don’t care about our religious differences; you, sir, is my new role model as a father. I hope I can interact with my one-year old like that a few years from now.
I really love that you are doing this series. It is so rare these days to see people put "religion" behind them and put the relationship with Christ to the front. I am a Christian death metal musician that has always found it difficult to explain what we do to the ones who aren't walking with Jesus. It almost seems like an explanation of polar opposites when you say "Christian Death Metal". I just know that my Father wants me to make a joyful noise and what I play definitely qualifies as "noise", lol. Keep going, guys. Perhaps you will be a catalyst to knocking down the barriers that society has between those of faith and those walking alone.
@@Betterbeginner I can shoot you lyrics, if needed. Except maybe for the live version of Hellfire. My vocalist usually played that loose and went where he was led with it.
I applaud you for not judging a book by its cover. From my experience, not many religious people are willing to let go of there “holy books” just for a moment, and listen. Whether it be musical content or someone just talking. 👏👏👏
As a lifelong believer & lifelong metalhead & metal musician, life can be full of seemingly endless contradictions & "moral struggles" if you will. However, as you just experienced, all is not what it seems & there indeed is much light where it can appear darkness rules. I could go on forever, but I will just say it warms my heart to see a pastor glimpse into a world I know is one of the last to hear REAL truth. The metal community. Labels have kept us apart for too long. The most loving, compassionate, understanding, open-minded, intelligent & passionate people I know are metalheads. And when they stop judging believers & when believers stop judging them, THEN we will truly get somewhere.
WHAT! never read/watched lord of the rings! One of the most metal stories every written. Do yourself a favor and at least watch the movie. Also, your dad is cool. Lucky to have an open minded father like this.
Lord Of The Rings is actually an Christian story and J. R. R. Tolkien the author of it was a massive Christian and he said himself that he has put biblical wisdom inside of it.
Hey Guys, I really want to thank you for this video. As a reborn Christian who loves death and heavy metal I love to hear you both analyzing this song from a biblical perspective... Back in 1983 I sent away for a Demo tape of a band called Mantis. I was 16 in High School. The leader of the band Chuck. ."Evil Chuck" at the time. He was also 16 and washing dishes for some restaurant He sent me his bands tape Mantis. Not really that great. Poor production. But the c dude was really cool and into Metal like me. Hand written letter. He was very down to earth....reminded me of a friend of mine We continued to write back and forth and he changed his name to "Death: band name. They got alot better. Hired a dude Cam Lee. Great vocals. Better than Chucks. I remember something happened and he said he might join Canadian thrash band Slaughter. Not to be confused w hair band of same name. They had a tune "Insinorater" I remember. But Death had Corpse Grinder...awesome I think Cam then fronted Massacre..great band. I bought first Death Lp. Then kinda got into other bands. He was coming up to NJ to play at "The Showplace" in like Dover Nj. He wanted to meet up and hang. This was like 1985 I threw out all my Metal memorabilia, letters ect Wish I didnt. That's because he's got a cool pop. Bless u both.
The lead singer knew he was dying when he wrote this. Could be the reason for the spiritual insight within this song. A very memorable album. -edit- apparently he wasn't dying yet when he wrote this. Still, I think he was still performing. Amazing band.
I am a christian for myself and fk yeah I love Death Metal and I love that amazing album :D In my opinion the most important thing in life is not to what kind of music you listen to but how you act and what you believe deep inside your heart. I listen to "mean" and "devil" music but I can still say that I am a true christian without lying to myself. I really love to see how open minded a pastor can be.. I didnt expect that to be honest. You clearly deserved a sub. Have a nice day :)
I love how open to music y'all are. As an atheist it's refreshing to know you don't just judge people for no reason, and are open minded to all music:).
I’m not into a lot of death metal but as a Christian and metal guy I adore Chuck. He always sang on “most” albums about the human condition. I worked as a Christian advisor for addicts and surprisingly Chuck has many Christocentric songs. Cool reaction
Chuck was a great human. I attended a show of them and a person in the audience got unwell during the show. Chuck left the stage for a song or two to get involved in trying to save the persons life. The person was taken by ambulance and Chuck rejoined then. He had such a great heart you can see that in the interviews that exist with him.
Respect to you pastor. The world needs more open minded people like you no matter what their beliefs are. Try some Wardruna next. Helvegen is a good song to get into. That or Current 93 - This Autistic Imperium Is Nihil Reich. David Tibet is actually Christian but has some interesting views on it.
Wardruna is just plain awesome. The word 'epic' is badly overused, but it applies in their case. 'Rotlaust Tre Fell', 'Dagr' or 'Algir Tognatale' might be good starting points as well.
Like you and Chuck, I can only go off of this brief example as a sense of who you are and what you stand for, but I really appreciate the respect and open mindedness you brought to the table. That is an aspirational attitude that anybody could benefit from witnessing.
Yeah Death has alot more meaningful lyrics compared to other death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel and Dying Foetus among others most of which focus mainly on blood and gore or just senseless violence. Like the music is good sounding still, but lyrics are important for me.
True, except for Dying Fetus - lots of politically loaded lyrics in their catalogue, and anti-establishment/anti-religion/anti-abortion (pro-life) lyrics, they are actually rather diverse, despite a few songs with senseless violence as their topic. Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse and the other old school bands are far more gore/horror movie/occult/violence focused for 9 out of 10 songs on every album.
Yeah I gotta agree with the other two replys,cc most def fits in that description and morbid angel definitely does to an extent but not really dying fetus.
@@Metalton95 Honestly, I think Dying Fetus - From Womb into the Waste is neither pro or anti abortion. I feel that they leave place for you to think about it.
I just want you guys to know how much i appreciate your open mindedness and the fact that you guys walk the walk of a good Christian while appreciating secular life.
I wanted to tell you guys how much I appreciate what you do. From the bottom of my heart I want to say thank you. I grew up going to church and some of my fondest memories are going to church camp, one of my favorite times ever. As I grew I became an atheist, a devout atheist and lashed out. Years later I won’t say I’ve come full circle but I will say that through my personal experience that I will no longer say that there is no God. I don’t know exactly where I am at right now friends but I’m no longer willing to write off God. I really appreciate what you do because as a fellow musician, someone who actually really enjoys to listen to some of the darker music like slayer and death and so on, I love how you don’t judge the people by the music. There will always be some bad people out there however you can’t judge anyone by the music any more than you can judge an author for writing horror movies or horror stories like Stephen King. And I really appreciate the fact that you guys can look beyond a stereotype and actually look into the humanity of your fellow human beings. I love metal music, I’ve been listening to slayer death Sodom. And a bazillion other metal groups for the majority of my life but I’m also a good person, a father of three boys that I’m very proud of that Have grown and are now adults. I am an empathetic and compassionate human being and I really hope that I have taught my sons to be as well. Sorry didn’t mean to ramble but I just wanted to say that I appreciate what you guys do and for not being judge mental. I guess that’s really it. And I really like that you and your son can make these awesome videos.

I definitely like Death more when they became more technical and the lyrics more philosophical. Another you might like is Flattening of Emotions, or Trapped in a Corner.

Pastor, much love to you and your son. Lord Bless....from a brother in Japan....I am an American that has lived in Japan for 19 years and have been listening to metal since 83. I love your father son relationship. I have the same with my three sons....all of the loving God and metal.
I like this pastor guy. I appreciate that he's making a great effort to enjoy the music and it seems like he really is loving this track. Pastor man, may I suggest that you borrow the CD from your son and listen to the entire album, uninterrupted, from start to finish. It's a journey that is best enjoyed loud, and as said, uninterrupted. It's nice to see that a Christian pastor is sincerely attempting to listen to metal and giving it a chance from their perspective, instead of shunning it like most Christians do.
I miss Chuck. His music was just so much more. He just spoke with every note of his guitar and the band 's sound was just so perfect and Chuck wouldn't have it any other way! Thanks for reacting and enjoying what they brought to the world
Finally someone named Opeth... when I listen to them I'm mainly captured by the richness of their music made of multi-layers, some of which are so deep below others and hard to catch for a not fine ear, but their lyrics are also part of what makes of Opeth one of the best bands on the planet today and perhaps of all time. I cannot pick a song over another but hey Pastor @Robert Houghton I let you do the hard work here... I'm a non-believer and very critical with the concept of religion itself but I do already listen to you with care {and lotta respect, I'd say} so it makes sense to keep up my role a bit! PS: I believe a huge spot should be given to Layne Staley and Alice In Chains, because I believe there's a lot of messages there to analize and take out which can lead to making a service to yours community.
Subscribed this channel since the Slayer's Disciple reaction video, Pastor reaction was a new thing for me especially when you had to open the Bible and cite the verses. Check out "Heavy Yoke", would love to see a reaction lol

It was too enormous a task, and Chuck told Jim Morris that if it couldn't be accomplished exactly as he imagined it, it shouldn't be done. Too many years have gone by. E". That's from the officla Death on FB.
what deeper in this world is there than death?
he never said he wasnt happy with it, he said he would have called it something different, but he still likes "Death"

Death is probably one of my favorite bands of all time. Chuck had very meaningful lyrics, one of a kind riffs and he will be deeply missed. And as a Christian I would like tell you that I really respect what your doing here . Bridging the gap between Christian and non Christian music fans without narrow mindedness. You have my attention. Subscribed now. Lol
I'm a non-christian and watch him for the same reason. Guess he's doing a good job so far :)
Should react to Spiritual Healing instead
The best part of this is seeing nice interactions between a father and son.

You're talking about the best metal band of all times, dude. Chuck was not only a hell of a guitarist, the best of all times to me, but he was a true philosopher.
For a Christian, Atheist, Muslim, whatever, his music is just Pure Art ;)
@Max Campo of course.

Coroner was a 3 piece and I have yet to find a 6 piece that sounds as technical. The album RIP is a metal masterpiece!

Dude, I always said that The Sound of Perseverance is a complete album, it has everything, not only talking about riffs. It's a master piece.

The person was taken by ambulance and Chuck rejoined then. He had such a great heart you can see that in the interviews that exist with him.

Dying Fetus has a lot of meaningful lyrics.

Just stream new albums before you buy them and dont complain because they still have the best back catalogue of any touring band.
I'm going to see Opeth at Download 2019, I hope they play ghost of perdition live
Opeth ghost of perdition is in my opinion one of the most creative songs. It has so many awesome turns in different genres of music. Opeth are like a combination of death, pink floyd & black sabbath 🤘
Love you brothers. Religion or not you are in my heart. We are one.
Should react to The Philosopher by Death. By far one of the best metal bands of all time, glad to see some Christians enjoying good metal
