      My father doesn't understand growling. He doesn't understand heavy music. Not even distorted guitar. Everything is labeled as "Doomsday music" (without any religious meaning). One thing I've always noticed about Opeth is that their lyrics deal with dark themes, but they never glorify them. They're always painted anxiously, and negatively. There's a real genuine sorrow within them. Their lyrics are often intentionally hard to interpret, too, in order to keep it meaningful to each individual listener.
    It's also important to remember that with bands like Opeth and Porcupine Tree, the lyrics are often from someone else's perspective and they're not necessarily good. Porcupine Tree has an album called "In Absentia", and most of the lyrics are from the perspective of serial killers, the idea of "In Absentia" referring to their souls being absent.

      "the lyrics are often from someone else's perspective and they're not necessarily good"
      Good example is The Devil's Orchard. When it came out people made a bit of a big deal of the "God is dead" line, but in the context of the song it's a person wandering who is hearing voices tell him that, they are not the words of Mikael himself.

    • @RohannvanRensburg
      @RohannvanRensburg 5 лет назад +6

      @@louzermonster7323 Oh absolutely. Mikael even stated that's not some philosophical claim, it's part of the concept. The end line is the giveaway -- throughout the song it's stated in some sort of triumphant way, but at the end of the song it sounds bone-chillingly unsettling. They're easy to misinterpret.

    • @RohannvanRensburg
      @RohannvanRensburg 5 лет назад +3

      @@truedarklander Mikael is an agnostic/atheist, and some of his lyrics reflect that, but again, they're never really stated in a defiant way. I don't respect the lyrics Mikael writes with Bloodbath, but he has stated that the entirety of it is tongue in cheek.

    • @mattnezan4259
      @mattnezan4259 5 лет назад +19

      @Héctor Bernal My understanding is that atheism and agnosticism deal with separate things:
      Atheism with belief and agnosticism with knowledge/certainty.
      So typically there are two types on opposing sides of the topic of god. An agnostic atheist is someone who doesn't know whether or not a god exists (agnostic), but doesn't believe/is not convinced of the existence(atheist). This is pretty common on the side of the nonreligious/nonbelievers.
      A gnostic theist on the other hand believes (theism) AND is certain/claims to, or does, know a god exists(gnosticism).
      The differentiation is the 'a' in front of those words. 'a'theism vs theism and 'a'gnosticism vs gnosticism; nonbelief vs belief, nonknowledge/noncertainty vs knowledge/certainty(or claims to knowledge)

    My interpretation of this song is as follows:
    This is a murder (by drowning) committed by an insane person who has a warp sense of deliverance/salvation. The song is taken from the perspective of the murderer during the perpetration of the murder.
    “Your salvation is found in a sinners deed”
    He believes that he is bringing salvation to the victim by killing them. The salvation is for the victim and he is the sinner doing the deed (or that the deed he is committing is a sin). It’s possible that he sees them as unclean/evil/sinners that requires saving. Also, by doing his own sinner’s deed (murder) he is also bringing salvation to himself.
    “Deliverance, thrown back at me…. Laughing at me”
    However, after the murder he realises that salvation and deliverance will never be his because the devil (his insanity) is guiding the way. The devil/insanity is tricking him. By his sinner’s deeds he can never be saved.
    Cheers!

      A lot of religion is willful ignorance turned to hatred.

    Ffffff!!! I love Opeth so much, it's one of my favorite bands!! As a Christian, I've been questioned and criticized heavily about my faith because I listen to metal, sometime I even get made fun of of how I probably am full of demons 😓. I'm so thankful there are people like you talking about the art of metal music with an open mind and setting an example -even to non-believers- about what true Christianity is and how it goes far beyond what music you listen to. I bet you're going to be touching lots of lives through this channel. Keep rocking on and spreading God's word, guys! Blessings from Mexico!

      John 8:44 “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

Mikael and Steven are close friends for nearly 20 years now, that's why they both influenced each other musically. "Thank You, Pain" by The Agonist is a song that actually has a
    conversation between the growled and clean vocals. Anyway, I think the
    "savior" and "deliverance" in this song refers to death, as it removes
    the victim from that situation. Their murder is an evil deed, of course,

    Very cool to see this! I'm a Christian who listens to stuff that I don't always agree with...as long as you use discernment and understand what is and isn't applicable to how to live your own life (and are old enough for said discernment), then I don't see an issue. Oddly enough, my faith also grew tremendously at the same time as I got into this music, when I was in college! Quite possibly because it was important to me to have answers about these darker parts of life, so I was both getting into the music AND looking deeper into my Christian faith simultaneously.
