😂 I agree but he does have a point. It's quite stop and start and less produced. But that's what is good about them. I'm glad I heard the 3 albums after and then bought the first 3 mysterious raw, broody albums. I think it was a necessary process/practice to write better songs and structures and have classic black metal albums in said process.

Opeth at their worst is still light years ahead of like 95% of all metal bands. I kind of understand your comments about the first couple of albums but I still reall enjoy them. Songwriting improved markedly with Still Life and then Blackwater Park was lifted with the production and songwriting help from Steven Wilson. What I love most is how well 12 minute songs still come together in a live setting. One of my favourite bands ever.
Orchid is mostly shit with moments of brilliance, Morningrise is a refined version of Orchid and is an improvement in every way and My Arms is fantastic and is pretty much the first time Opeth was Opeth as we know them. I could see shitting on Orchid but the other two should be immune to flogging.

They are amateurish ...in comparison to their own later albums. Not amateurish in comparison to other bands though! A lot of songs do just sound like they threw in one riff after the next and lack continuity, which the later albums especially Ghost & Watershed .. do not.

I remember recommending Ghost reveries to a hip hop friend, he said he didnt like it but some parts were good, I told him to listen to it again and trust me. A week later I see his instagram story just driving in the sunset listening to the middle melodic part of harlequin forest. He has now begun the journey
I didn’t even start listening to Opeth heavily until 2021. Prior to that I only knew a handful of songs. I wish I hadn’t waited but the upshot is I had their entire catalogue to discover as music that was brand new to me. There isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t listen to Opeth. There’s so much to love.
I dont know about how familiar you are with their discography yet, but dont listen to Bradleys opinion on MAYH. It is more proggy and has WAY better transitions then the first two albums. It has some of the most powerful and wild growls in their discography, and maybe the darkest and most dense atmosphere of any Opeth record. Of course it is not yet on a level with GR, BWP or Watershed when it comes to overall musicality, but it has a wild and youthful energy. I would not go as far to say it is their best album, but it has grown to be maybe my most listened to album (after I kinda ignored it for my first 8-10 years of beeing an Opeth fan, maybe I just overlistened everything else :D )
The first 3 Opeth albums are so criminally underrated. I think it's a great example of metal elitism tbh as most people that criticize them, including the band members themselves to be fair, criticize their 'bad production' which is actually a big part of what made them so good. People these days are way too obsessed with production in general, and with clean sterile, precise, production at that. We have forgotten that there is beauty in simplicity and in imperfection.

They have a piercing guitar tone and a deeply melancholic atmosphere.
Morningrise is pretty amateur. It’s just a billion riffs and acoustic parts played next to each other without making any sense. But My Arms Your Hearse is their darkest album ever.

From Heritage to Sorceress Opeth just straight up became a 1970's prog band. In Cauda Venenum was a bit of a return to form, I especially like the version with the Swedish vocals.
Actually: Heritage is a very unique take on prog and a passion project for Mikael PC is 100% opeth DNA with prog sounds, a bit less innovative but very good. Sorceress actually has a similar sound to ICV and has a lot of bangers, but the production is horrible ICV is Nupeth 2.0 and I'm all here for it

MAYH is gorgeous, atmospheric, riffs and vocals are of the chain, amazing transitions, superbly melodic, great lyricism and story, consistent as fuck. My favourite Opeth album, no cap.

My first exposure to Opeth was My Arms, Your Hearse and I still love it. The transition from Prologue to April Ethereal is a punch in a the dick but in a good way.
I discovered Opeth through Damnation, I love Progressive rock and they definitely excel at it, so I couldn't really understand those complaining about Opeth transition from Prog Death Metal to Progressive Rock. I've been listening to their first albums lately and now get why so many people miss that era, in my case I can say that I love their latest stuff so much but can't deny that the raw sound of the first albums really slaps.
I really think Pale Communion could have been absolutely incredible if they had implemented some of their death metal sounds. It's a great record, probably my favourite of their most recent four albums.
Got turned on to this band in 2003 or 2004 in high school. I've had the the O tatood on my back for ~13 years. Im married now, 35 and still love listening to them, including the first 3 albums. Black Rose Immortal is one of my favorites but i have like 30 favorite Opeth tunes lol

My tier list (just about the only one I have of any bands ever): S: Still Life, MAYH, Morningrise, Blackwater Park, Damnation A: Orchid, Ghost Reveries B: Watershed, Deliverance C: Sourceress D: Heritage, Pale Communion, In Cauda Venenum And nothing in the divorce one, as all of their stuff is at least good. Most of the time brilliant. But I also cooled down regarding their latest stuff. Strong agree on Still Life - bloody masterpiece, my absolute favourite album. Of all. Ever.
Very glad to see Ghost Reveries at the peak. Everything on that album just flows so naturally into each other plus it's home to my favourite Opeth track in Reverie/Harlequin Forest 🙂

I've seen Opeth like... 7 or 8 times since the early 00s. I don't specifically go anywhere to see them, they just turn up to most metal festivals. They're genuinely always so good live, with such great stage presence and humour, that every single time, without fail, I go home and listen to them... Before remembering I've done it multiple times before over 2 decades and I'm not a fan of their albums. I will say one thing though... Opeth fans are great. You can SAY the above and not offend them. Unlike other certain fans who will proclaim, "you don't get it."

You're right. The guitar tones on 'Orchid' and 'Morningrise' are pure nectar to me.

This band wouldnt be the the same without that Mendez bass. Its incredible on Blackwater, Drapery Falls bass is just perfect.

Opeth are one of my favourite bands, and probably my favourite metal band. I love the Steven Wilson collaborations especially.

Very glad to see Ghost Reveries at the peak. Everything on that album just flows so naturally into each other plus it's home to my favourite Opeth track in Reverie/Harlequin Forest 🙂
You gotta eat your beans and really get into Demon of the fall. You recognized its hook but it's a damn great track like a dark autumn night.
I always said on Heritage that Opeth turned into the band that Spinal Tap eventually turned into in the movie 😂.

Yeah, people who think Orchid and Morningrise are their worst albums are people who I will not agree with on much about music and production and atmosphere at all. Maybe because they are closer to black metal in vibe and classical in structure. Sorry they aren’t in proper “song” form for you haters. I’ve loved them so much since like 1997.

I've seen Opeth like... 7 or 8 times since the early 00s. I don't specifically go anywhere to see them, they just turn up to most metal festivals.
They're genuinely always so good live, with such great stage presence and humour, that every single time, without fail, I go home and listen to them...
Before remembering I've done it multiple times before over 2 decades and I'm not a fan of their albums.
I will say one thing though... Opeth fans are great. You can SAY the above and not offend them.
Unlike other certain fans who will proclaim, "you don't get it."

Without a doubt one of the greatest "death" metal bands of all time. Arguably the best death vocals too... Pure talent.
I was gonna hate you for dissing the first 3 albums but your praise for Still Life saved your ass as that is my favorite album of thiers.
nah the first 3 are pretty raw and have some cool stuff. agree with most of the other albums
