I agree. I may have atheist leaning feelings, but I am open to opinions from “the other end of the spectrum”.
This song seems to impress upon me that we, our humanity, is a potentially powerful spirit that we need to explore and appreciate. Religious people might equate this to one all powerful being, but in my mind Maynard Keenan is saying that we hold our destiny in our hands. We don’t need to manufacture and worship a “Creator”. We are products of the universe that surrounds us, and in a way we are its consciousness and its will to survive. We need to cultivate this spirit, rise above our animalistic roots and become one with the cosmos.

    Every Toolhead ever: "its hypnotic"
Tool isn't just music... it is 100% an experience. I think thats why so many potheads enjoy bands like Tool and Pink Floyd
    Edit: that drummer!
Danny carey is possibly one of the best drummers of all time.
Also, Maynard loves to put religious undertones in his music. I think probably because most people want to feel like there is something out there. He is SUPER against organized religion. (Stemming from his church saying that his mother "wasn't right with God, which is why she got sick.")
He's not religious by any means... but he is definitely a spiritual person. Like positive and negative energy type.
I think that what makes tool so unique, is that their songs can speak to entirely different people, from entirely different religions... and it can still have some spiritual meaning to them.

Also interesting to know: "Pneuma (πνεῦμα) is an ancient Greek word for "breath", and in a religious context for "spirit" or "soul". It has various technical meanings for medical writers and philosophers of classical antiquity, particularly in regard to physiology, and is also used in Greek translations of ruach רוח in the Hebrew Bible, and in the Greek New Testament. In classical philosophy, it is distinguishable from psyche (ψυχή), which originally meant "breath of life", but is regularly translated as "spirit" or most often "soul"."

Based on 10,000days, wings, Maynard is now saved, his lyrics are a well-defined truth, endlessly questioned by Maynard, in his path towards the self-evolution, becoming an enlightened being. He's following his own path as we all are, we must question everything to find our truth, and become our highest form. Instead of brushing things off as, "I Know he's this and therefore," its been 13 years since the previous album, 10,000 days, over 5000 days, and nearly 20 years since Lateralus, nearly 24 for Ænima, and almost 30 since Opiate, and Tool were in their 30's when they got together and got signed very quickly because of their sheer awesomeness. point being lots of time has passed by since each of their previous musical offerings. People grow as they live 5 and 10 and 15 years and more, as they say, "we grow into a different person every 5 years," Maynard has thus passed his 12 personal evolution and at a lifelong jujitsu, cross country runners pace. It'd have been way cooler if you tried to fully understand the best you can the words of this song, sadly this felt really rushed and brushed aside, very much a lost opportunity for growth on your part and for that of your subscribers. This song contains the light to light a lot of individual paths, I'D LOOK DEEPER, but that's just like my opinion dude. Party On!

The spirit/flesh comparison you got down, but the "Child, wake up, release the light" section was glossed over.
As a Christian, to me that line immediately makes me think of Matthew 5:14-16: "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
He's basically telling people that they need to let their light shine to the world, wake up to their potential, and to remember that we're all born of the same breath like you mentioned with regards to Adam's creation. We need to band together in order to survive together. All this said, I'm glad you guys decided to do a video on this song.

Knowing a little about the band's beliefs, the light is more likely to be the light of lucifer he is talking about, the "hidden knowledge" that God doesn't want you to know, probably the new age idea that you are a "god" you just have to realize it and after a certain number of the world's populations accept this the "ascended masters" will come to earth to "guide" the earth into a "higher conscience" (i.e. the anti christ's reign on earth).

The word pneuma comes from the Greek word for "that which is breathed or blown." The term took on multiple layers of meaning for the ancient Greeks and later for Judeo-Christian theologians and philosophers, as it became a word for "spirit" or "soul."
References to the "breathe" concept are found in the song's line We are born of one breath, one word, and the continued repetition of "spirit."
In the case of this song, the reference to the word is clearly oriented towards the yogic tradition, with guitar synthesized to sound like the Middle Eastern sitar and the light playing of Arabic goblet drum. Breath, or "pneuma," is at the core essence of yogic practice, both literally and spiritually.
This song basically is a yogic meditation rendered in music. It discusses how we human beings are bound to our flesh and the illusions of the material world, but really are called to return to the essential, egoless "pneuma" of the universe's underlying reality. The song is a call to spiritual freedom and oneness:
    Reach out and beyond
    Wake up, remember
We are born of one breath, one word
We are all one spark, eyes full of wonder

It's amazing to me that a band that's entire purpose is to inspire other artists to create, would be considered anti-anything, they are the opposite of that, rather inspiring the good of human kind and the artistry of humans around the world.

The entire album is in variants of 7. As far as the time signature. Drummer's name is Danny Carey. Master and original. Keep in mind Maynard's phrasing as the singer is also done with the time signature in mind. He's truly one of the instruments. It's very complex. It takes multiple listens to get all the nuances and motifs.

Getting super-technical, PNEUMA is a loanword into English from the Greek, where it has multiple related meanings, such as breath, wind, spirit. Info on the wikipedia entry here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneuma
Hence the multiplicity of ways in which it can be taken especially in spiritual contexts. The authors of the New Testament used this when writing both about the spirit inside a man and the Holy Spirit of God, and started really drilling in to how God works in our spirit through His Spirit. It's a fascinating study in taking the mystical and ineffable things of God and putting them into words we understand yet still containing so much greater meaning that we can't fully understand.

Once again, I thought this was wonderful. Though I was raised Catholic, and went through CCD and Confirmation, I don't consider myself religious, our would proclaim myself as a believer of any spiritual structure.
I appreciate the openness into exploring the meaning behind something that may not have intended to fit within the Christian belief system. That openness, and the mental exercise of drawing parallels between the art and the religion, is a respectful one, and I believe is something that has earned my attention into hearing the input from your side.
I think the world could use a lot more of this. Honest listening, appreciation for the work put into the idea, and non-confrontational discourse of differing interpretations and beliefs.

I grew up in a Christian church, and I am obsessed with Tool.
After learning about metaphysics and philosophy. Every time you say AD a.m. in reference to the song I cannot help but hear ATOM.
After stepping away from the church and going on my own journey, I cannot help but see every Christian tale as a parable through metaphors that can be applied through our experienced reality.
On much deeper levels than many can imagine these metaphors can explain everything that is what we call existence. However it is through long-winded poetic metaphors that most cannot grasp the beauty.
I had to look at religions outside of Christianity, and learn about psychology, metaphysics, magic, spirituality, New Age thinking, other religions around the world, and understanding that we are all connected to the one. It baffles me that you can understand Christianity as well as you do and not see all these things that you were attributing to Maynards own believe system are so in alignment with Christianity
    The spark
    The Flame
    the breath
The universal energy force that ties us all together.
    Taoists call it the Tao.

I believe the meaning of Pneuma applied in this song is, creative spirit. Maynard was raised in a Christian family, and if you listen to the songs about his Mother he's not making a condemnation of Christianity, but of organized religion. Maynard has been cryptic about his beliefs, but most of the band talk about Sacred Geomotry and a lot of lyrics lead to that conclusion. I don't recall him condemning any religion or form of spirituality, which lead me to believe he puts forth the thought that there are many avenues to become closer to The Almighty. My thoughts on this song regarding one breath and wake up parallels, God breathing life into Adam to bring him to life, so in a sense we all originated from that One breath, if that make sense. Another informative reaction, and look forward to your next one.✌

The word Elohim occurs a few thousand times in scripture but never once in the KJV.

    • @BrianHavanas
      @BrianHavanas 4 года назад +1

I had a minute to look up the number of occurrences (385 times) of pneuma in scripture and found the following. The KJV translates Strong's G4151 (pneuma) in the following manner:
      Spirit (111x)
      Holy Ghost (89x)
      Spirit (of God) (13x)
      Spirit (of the Lord) (5x)
      (My) Spirit (3x)
      Spirit (of truth) (3x)
      Spirit (of Christ) (2x)
      human (spirit) (49x)
      (evil) spirit (47x)
      spirit (general) (26x)
      spirit (8x)
      (Jesus' own) spirit (6x)
      (Jesus' own) ghost (2x)
      miscellaneous (21x)
That would suggest Tool is reading from scripture, not the King James translation of scripture.

It was mine at first because it was so heavy, but after many listens, my favorite is Descending. Followed by pnuma, invincible, and then 7tempest.

I'm sure you mean "7empest" but yeah that song drives hard. Definitely Adam's best guitar work.

@@notsure1969 indeed I do mean that. I suppose I should've just called the song by it's correct name instead of Tempest

It''s good to see you guys making videos again, especially Tool ones. You guys are definitely my go to Tool guys, you always have interesting takes and it is interesting to see the implicitly religious overtones of Tool being discussed.

As for the lyrics I was instantly reminded of some of the beliefs some gnostics had in antiquity, specifically the pneumatics. The use of the Greek word "pneuma", the idea of breath and spark, the Divine Spark - yep, that is probably what inspired that song. The lines about light might refer to the belief in dualism. Waking up fits the philosophy, too, because they believed we are trapped in a sort of Matrix and have to wake up through knowledge (gnosis).
We know most about what they believed from early Christian apologetics, but also from the Nag Hammadi codex. It's all interesting stuff, but some of it is quite weird, especially when it comes to how some Gnostic sects read the Bible. But most people don't even dig that deep or try to actually read texts from the Nag Hammadi codex. They hear a little bit about what they believed, find that cool and interesting, are maybe fascinated by their criticism of the Scriptures (especially the belief that the OT God was an imposter) - and that's it.

Maynard plays on words a lot, example Tool. Tool has a different meaning such as a person who lacks the knowledge of being used, or a tool is a gadget, utensil. Whatever the person who analyzes his lyrics can get one meaning while another gets a totally different one. Example, on one song Prison Sex, one person over analyzed the song and came up with a meaning of depression and how people who are depressed feel better when abused, something like that, another person who was very dim suggested it's just about anal sex. Now I can see both sides and both have some validity. Pneuma, in particular, is another play on words but comes from his beliefs that derive from Bill Hicks. In one of Bill's stand up special he monologues, Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Heres Tom with the Weather.” If Maynard's lyrics have some biblical connotations is because he combines other religions to christianity. Buddha teaches, " I am not a body with a soul, I'm a soul with a body." So to learn from the world and to grasp the lessons it can teach and not limiting yourself to just one book is idiotic. That is why he says. " Wake up child, wake up remember." Peel all the layers you can from his music, feel the rhythm, embrace the lyrics with the music or just one part, use it to obtain an epiphany or do what you will but don't close your mind and learn something. In the words of Albert Einstein, " Science without religion is boring, but religion without science, that is ignorance." Also, something Maynard subscribes to.

Jesus Villarreal Maynard prefers words and themes with a WIDE semantic range. That way he can squish them as he pleases!

Hey Guys!!!! Great to see this video! When I listen to this song now, I just think of Pneuma as the Holy Spirit. That’s how the meaning got presented to me from the 1st time I listened to it...as in that’s how I interpreted the meaning in a meditative sort of way.

In medical terminology the term pneuma does mean breath as a prefix to respiratory issues but in the stoic system the term pneuma means soul or spirit

We didn’t earn the sin (and death) that Adam earned just like we didn’t earn the forgiveness (and life) that Jesus earned. What great word guys! It took me a while to love “Fear”. The song that sold me was 7empest. Pneuma was not immediate but after patient listening became my second favorite on the album. I would now rate the album #2 behind Ænima, with Lateralus right behind. I am a believer and love Jesus and I also appreciate the talent these guys have and listen to them but don’t worship them. God bless you boys and your family. Thanks for reaching out to people who may not otherwise be willing or able to receive the living word.
