- Tutorial on how to fold an origami mask using some basic techniques.
Create a true paper sculpture!
Part 1 shows how to create eyes, a nose and a mouth. Part 2 will show how to shape the head and hairs.
Recommended paper: Arches 300 gsm or more watercolor paper. Vary your paper size and ratio for different results! This will also work with elephant hide but it’s easiest to learn with thick watercolor paper.
I used a 30x30cm square.
This is mostly freefolding with no references, but I chose technique where you can’t go wrong on choosing proportions. Just make sure to make your pleats big enough.

Love this....have been folding masks of Jackson Flynn and got hooked and then saw this channel...fantastic. I want to design my hero Albert Einstein mask....hopefully I will be able to do it after watching all your videos!
Hi, sorry for the late reply, what an excellent idea! If you're still working on that I would love to see your progress or help out where I can. Make sure to check out Daniel Chang's work (keepfoldingon) on Instagram for inspiration!
Paper Flow origami unfortunately I am not a genius like you or Flynn....so, it’s taking time to even envisage how the folding sequence will develop to reflect a known face! Will definitely check Daniel Chang’s channel....thanks for the tip
Awesome 👍🏻😽🤝
Really nice video! I should buy some watercolor paper and try folding some masks!
Would love to see you give it a go!
I clicked to see just exactly how those eyes were made, only to find out I was used as an example lol
Haha that's so funny. I keep studying your masks trying to figure out how you do them. We should fold together!
Please make more this video was so good

Awesome art,love it...! ! !
Finally no clickbait
I’ve had this beautiful handmade paper lying around here for a solid 10 years and I’ve never found any use for it... :D
320gsm it’s really thick and it’s just A5 size. So I’m bracing myself for frustration, but the tutorial is so great, I really wanna try it out :)
Oh let me know how it went! I hope you practiced on other paper first. It took me quite a while before I was able to fold this smooth
@@PaperFloworigami so it was definitely frustrating at times... I managed to get an okay nose, because this fairly straight bridge wasn’t as hard to do in comparison to the other parts. When I got to shaping the eyes and especially the mouth, it was just sad haha. I either had the paper too dry or much too wet (I think) and couldn’t find a healthy middle. I didn’t practice with other paper first, but I decided this was a good use for it... but I’ll probably order some paper that is at least A4, since I’m hoping this will give me a bit more room for successful shaping. I’m thankful for any more tips! :D
@@PaperFloworigami oh and one thing that was so frustrating was that all my shapings turned out much too flat to make out any of the face parts. I wanna make them deeper and more pronounced but just haven’t found out how to do so while keeping everything else intact. Do I have to aim for a more narrow face shape from the start?
Getting a 'flat' face is what everyone struggles with at first. Hard to explain how to avoid it other than really try to exaggerate every fold. Make them much deeper than what seems natural, so the paper sticks out to the back more. To do this you need to use more paper to make every aspect than you think you do at first. So for instance when you start creasing the nose, make the creases further apart so you think you already making a wide nose. This way you can make it more pronounced, and by doing so it becomes narrower again.
And yeah folding on anything smaller than a4 is just hard. And the mouth is the hardest part for anyone ;)
New video to watch at 3 AM
Hey excellent tutorial, do you have any advice on how to start or from where to learn more thing? Becuase this video is the only source of information i found for mask folding
Check out jackson's origami too for mask folding! Or the book 'shaping paper' by David gachepapier
Do you have any idea how to frame it - how to hang it on a wall?
I use double sided tape to stick it to a frame.
@@stevedeclercq thank you, I fell in love with you immediately :-))))
Is it possible to use paper for origami airplanes for this? i wanna make my own face masks to use it as reference to try to make one in blender (3d modeling app).
Don't really know what paper that is but generally I can say you want anything thicker than printer paper and preferably watercolor paper as it doesn't desintegrate when you wetten it. It's possible with any kind of paper just a lot harder
painted it with acrylic and stuck it together with acrilyc paint. my first attempt did rip, but it was only at the nose, I still cant wet it too much cuz it starting to get too soft, think I will paint the other side too. Thnx
what paper do you use?
Arches watercolor paper 300 gsm
Nice but also creepy
polyrhythms. whatever audio was in the background was a polyrhythm. to be exact its a 3:4 polyrhythm. anyways, thanks for the cool tutorials
came here from 9gag insta 🤪
Nice, the Jackson's origami post?
@@PaperFloworigami yeah
Can you use card stock instead of water color paper?
You can, but it's a lot harder to get a nice result. You should also be a lot more careful with moistening that too; I recommend folding that dry. Check out Fynn Jackson's masks for some models that are more suited for cardstock. Good luck!
@@stevedeclercq thank you very much. I will try that.
Good luck
Is Carl Sagan narrating?
Haha thanks but no ;)
Huge paper cut on finger, ouwie.
Hey man this is not basic .... could've simplified it ..ntl nicely done..
this isnt basic this is complicated and confusing, dont catfish people, this is useless
For folding masks this is actually the basis many models are built on (as mentioned in the video) so no i'm not catfishing. Nowhere did I say this was easy. Like basic quantum physics you can't expect it to be easy either...
