    Animal Collective fan here, alot of AnCo fans will give long-winded paragraphs explaining why they love the band so much, but I love the band for just one major reason, its just fun music. They definitely aren't a happy band by any means and they definitely have some oddball instrumentation but whenever I listen to the band (especially the run from Sung Tongs up to Centipede Hz), I'm just soaked in warm vibes and colourful atmospheres. I don't get the hype for Buddy Holly (not the Weezer song, that one's a banger). My dad plays his music in the car quite often, and when I give his songs a shot, I don't like them. His music makes me think of Chip and Skip from Camp Lazlo. It sounds like music to scoop the pig enclosure to. The song Listen To Me is the biggest example of what I'm thinking of. Buddy's vocal delivery is just NOT it. I'd put him in "Utter Confusion", since I don't get how he became this highly regarded.

    • @paultomaszewski1964
      @paultomaszewski1964 Месяц назад +8

      It's not so much his music as what he pioneered in the two plus years he was around. (yes, he was only around for less than three years) He wrote his own lyrics, music, engineered, and arranged it as well. When he was signed to a label that was the one thing he had control over and would not budge. Rock was so new and all the labels wanted any act as long as they would do the music they wanted, in the way they wanted. This is why the Beatles and the Stones were so influenced by him. They made music their way as well and you can see what they started back in the early 60's. Yes it's simple for the most part and recordings back then were not all that great, (stereo recordings were years off at this point) but he made the most of what he could get and they had.

      I like his music a lot but I definitely have to be in the mood for oldies music to listen to him. He was very young and one of the first "rock 'n' roll stars." I feel like his music was also very ahead of its time and that's why he was so highly respected.

  • @lspang99
    @lspang99 Месяц назад +3

    From the way you talked about all the artists on this list, I’m sure you listened to a lot of music from all the artists, but I’d love to hear your opinions on the first 2 Glass Animals records, Zaba and How to Be a Human Being. Especially with their newest album out, there seems to be a divide in the fanbase of old fans who adore those albums but don’t like the new stuff and newer fans who love their pop leaning stuff of the past two records. I personally love How to Be a Human Being, it’s one of my favorite albums of all time for its story telling and its mix of indie rock and hip hop beats. Also, I get how “you have to see it live!” isn’t a valid argument as concerts aren’t as accessible as albums, but I will say it is fascinating to see them perform stuff from all 4 albums at their concerts and find a way to make the setlist fit together when each album is so different.

    No hate whatsoever cause we all like what we like, but I am a huge lana del rey fan myself and I’m curious on your takes on her later work. Especially the more sentimental songs, like the grants. The grants for instance is about taking on cherished memories of your loved ones to heaven with you when you die. She does occasionally bring back the nostalgiac but bad girl aesthetic sometimes but way less than her older career. I think her lyrics have really improved over the years but also your take is 100% valid! Curious to hear your thoughts on more recent releases like “did you know there’s a tunnel…” and NFR! :)

      I remember John reviewed NFR! when it came out and was quite positive about this particular album. But after Chemtrails he stopped noticing her records. As a Lana fan myself, I kinda understand why critics are usually not impressed by her albums. I think she's not an album artist, the only album I can listen to from start to finish is Born to Die 😂 But the more I hear one particular song of her over and over the more I appreciate it. Like Blue Banisters which is a genius song if you ask me but it's hard to get it instantly. Some singers songwriters just not for everyone, period.

    For me the 2 bands I could never get into are Panic! at the Disco and Vampire Weekend. To me Panic sounds like that annoying theater kid that brags about how talented they are, but you wanna punch them in the face (Though admittedly Pretty. Odd. got some good songs) and Vampire Weekend, basically Crash and Mark from Spectrum Pulse pretty much said my thoughts on the recent Rock Coliseum, they come off as a bit too snobbish for my liking and it gets eye-roll worthy for me. I’m sure you’re mostly referring to Merriweather Post Pavilion which was an album that had me stumped. However the way I got into them was by hearing the one before, Strawberry Jam. That’s when it clicked for me and by hearing that album, it made me more open and understandable to songs from Merriweather Post Pavilion. However, I don’t know if you’ve heard it because if you have, then I would say “Try Feels”but that one might be a bit boring by the end for you. Then I would say Try Sung Tongs but that one might weird you out. Then I would bring you to a newer album but you might not get that either. And I would have to avoid their earliest stuff cause it would scare you. So all in all, I would say..

    I’ve personally never been able to get into All Time Low. Missing You is a great ballad and they have some bangers but I put them more in the Simple Plan category of “pop punk” The guitars aren’t nearly heavy enough and the tempos never get that high.

    I'm definitely with you on singers like Bruce Springsteen (as I hear him being praised all the time, especially by my family, yet when I listen to him it never interests me that much)
    I used to love bands like Arcade Fire, Journey, Pantera, Metallica (actually most metal bands I listened to growing up), Gorillaz (same with Blur) and even The Smiths, and while my love towards them did wear off a lot, I can still listen to them and even get really invested in them from time to time (And yeah, screw Morrissey as a person!)
    I'm not a huge fan of Bob Dylan either, but I too respect his legacy and his talent and I do like a few of his songs.
    "Tribute" and "Baby One More Time" are the only songs I heard/like from Tenacious D so far.
    The one band I personally could never get into that much is The Ramones. I can tolerate them and I do respect the impact they made in both punk rock and music in general, they just have very limited appeal to me.
    U2 on the other hand is still one of my favorite bands in spite of their oversaturation and creative decline as I still like a lot of their songs from the 80s, 90s and 2000s (and even a few from the 2010s) and I still love albums like The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby.

    So a little thing I would like to just point out regarding DGD, and this is not me stirring anything up, even though they kind of keep this on the down low, it’s very much out there. So from my understanding, the reason for Kurt Travis’s departure from DGD, was because Will Swan was apparently not happy with the state of the band at that time, and he wanted to end DGD, but he wanted to go out with a bang, so he had ask Kurt to leave, in order to bring back Jonny. This later turned into DGD doing more shows, which later turned to more touring, which later turned into another album, and the rest is history. Again, none of the singers hate each other, and if anything, they have love and respect for one another. Although in a lot of ways I’m definitely in the minority that I’m glad that Kurt and Jonny didn’t return to DGD, even after this recent departure of Tillian. I just feel like Kurt is doing better things that are more suited for him in his musical endeavors that don’t involve DGD and I personally like him more in A Lot Like Birds.

    A few for me, avoiding artists I straight up dislike:
    Foals - This is the most frustrating one for me because I really love a number of their singles, i.e. Mountain at My Gates, The Runner, Hummer, My Number and a couple of deep cuts I've picked up on like Out of the Woods and Wash It Off, but I've listened to numerous albums and they just don't do anything for me as cohesive projects.
    Blur - This is a band I thought I liked for a while and still have enough of a passion for them to be annoyed when somebody refers to them as "one-hit wonders", but I've come to realise for every great song, there's a bland one I don't really care for, and I don't find Parklife to be that good of an album; over time I've come to realise the answer of Blur VS Oasis is Pulp. Also hot take but I hate Coffee & TV.
    The Verve - I think Bitter Sweet Symphony and The Drugs Don't Work are brilliant songs and a couple of others grew on me like Lucky Man, but I've listened to Urban Hymns and find it very bland overall and Richard Ashcroft is a bit of a one-trick pony in his songwriting. I've tried listening to their earlier shoegazy-psychedelic stuff because it was an influence on Doves, a band I now really love but that also leaves me cold.
    Catfish & The Bottlemen - Speaking of one trick ponies, Catfish. My mum's gotten super into them lately so I'm hearing them all the time and they have some undeniably great songs like Cocoon & 7 but it gets pretty repetitive eventually and I find Van McCann's voice annoying at times. I also consider them to be a worse version of Arctic Monkeys across all their "mainstream" albums.
    Gorillaz - Hey, it's Jon from 8 years ago lol. I picked up Demon Days from a charity shop a couple of years ago as part of a 3-for-1 deal and I enjoy the singles but haven't really gotten into anything else, with the spoken word of Fire Coming Out The Monkey's Head being very off-putting. Also my favourite song of theirs is 19-2000 and even then, it's the remix version I like.
    Radiohead - This is a band I've gotten more into to the point I'd say I'm a casual fan, but I do not get the universal critical acclaim for them. In Rainbows has several songs I enjoy but a lot I find extremely bland (in fact I genuinely prefer Bangers + Mash over most of the main album), and Kid A is mostly misses for me.
    Florence + The Machine - I need to listen to more of their albums really, Lungs is good and Florence Welch is a brilliant singer but I find it blends into one for the most part, and some of the singles are so overplayed I've become numb to them. I've also never understood the mass acclaim of Hunger, it's good but not THAT amazing.
