ps, future Ranked episodes prob won't be this "scripted", wanted to go big for Green Day tho
You can watch all of my Green Day content in this playlist ruclips.net/p/PLojZ5gufY8hb7t2TYa8giRXVrdF1qzIUc
Shenanigans is very cohesive for a compilation album. If I didn't know it was a compilation I'd assume it was a studio album because it flows that well.
It's awesome. Green Day threw us a bone in 2002 before they did what they would do.
I think 21st Century Breakdown is still an underrated masterpiece. Both 21CB and RevRad in my opinion are better than Saviors, maybe in some years this will change but at the moment this is how I feel about it
21CB > Saviors > RevRad
RevRad is just not as strong lyrically or in terms of production imo
Totally agree with you about 21CB. Such an underrated masterpiece. I know it had big hits like 21 guns/know your enemy, but it still feels very overlooked
21CB might quite honestly be the most underrated album of all time. Easily S tier
I'm always saying this. It's such a shame. I feel like 21st got overshadowed by the success of American Idiot. I felt that they put so much effort into this and talent was at its peak, but then people complained that it wasn't like their previous albums and then they just never did anything like it again.
@austinmaser5127 couldn’t agree more!
Saviors definitely has a lot of growers. The title track has some big Empire Strikes First vibes, is it just me?
im picking up what you're putting down
10:50 never forget green day rock band
Fun fact: I share a birthday with Green Day’s first ever EP may 26 except I was born in 2010
That EP is 1 year, and 1 day older than me lol

“I can still smell the summer of 2009” I get that every time I listen to 21st Century Breakdown too.
Pretty solid rankings! Here is mine, I really love Green Day and this was hard. I’ve been loving Saviors and 21CB is always better than I remember

Jon talking about Green Day is always a win.
Definitely
THANK YOU for giving my favorite album, Warning, the recognition it deserves!
As a Green Day superfan, I agree with this list but I think Rev Rad should be in A and I might have Shenanigans higher in B just because of Suffocated, Desentitized, and Ha Ha You’re Dead. Those songs are so good.
Also, “Still Breathing” is an absolute modern classic, up there with “Dilemma” in their recent discog.
Do da da?
@@xXMachineGunPhillyXx True, both tracks are so good.
Personally I think RevRad is their best and Forever Now is their best song. It just feels so triumphantly anthemic (even though i know it has an opposite meaning) and it feels very auto bibliography like for a song.
@@ScottyBMakin I KNOW RIGHT?? FOREVER NOW'S ENDING ALWAYS GIVES ME CHILLS dude it's so triumphant and EUPHORIC feeling
Warning is a great album, well placed at #5. It's just a shame that the album was the first of the Pro-Tools era in all its sterility.
Great job on the list Jon! I can see your points you bring up for each album and respect your placements even if I personally disagree.
I remember being so excited for Saviors that when I was done with my film program for the day and got home, I rushed to my music room and re-listen to Green Day's discography again. Granted, I need to re-listen to Father of All and the trilogy again and see if my thoughts change, but for funsies, here's my ranking on their discography from worst to best as of right now:
14. Father of All... (5/10)
13. UNO (6/10)
12. DOS (6/10)
11. 39/Smooth (6/10)
10. Kerplunk! (6/10)
9. TRE (7/10)
8. Saviors (8/10)
7. Insomniac (8/10)
6. Dookie (8/10)
5. 21st Century Breakdown (8/10)
4. Revolution Radio (9/10)
3. Warning (9/10)
2. Nimrod (9/10)
1. American Idiot (9/10)
I've always thought of Green Day's discography in arcs. I feel like the first half of their career, in particular, can be broken down into distinct, two-album phases:
1) 39 Smooth/ Kerplunk: The Lookout Years. Most songs are about love. Chuck Berry-esque guitar solos abound. Low budget recording quality. Endearing.
2) Dookie/Insomniac: Fast, lean pop-punk that leans more aggressive than their previous material (esp. Insomniac). Far fewer love songs, more about growing up, boredom, and angst. Mike Dirnt's is ON FIRE during this time. Those basslines...
3) Nimrod/Warning: The "I think I'm an old man, but I'm really just in my late 20's" years. More songs themed around getting older, responsibility, letting go. Lots of experimentation with different instrumentation. Strings, Mariachi bands, horns. It really did feel like their career was slowing down around this time, but I loved, and still love these albums.
4) AI/ 21'st CB: The rock opera years. Big, anthemic, multi-part songs. Very slick production. Albums really best experienced from front to back. Also, a big change to Green Day's live performance. Sudden emphasis on aesthetics (eyeliner, matching stage outfits, BIG bombastic live shows). I remember being turned off initially when AI came out. The group of schlubby white dudes I idolized as an early teenager now looked like a walking Hot Topic and felt unapproachable. I've since come around these albums in a big way, but this is where I fell off as a fan for about a decade.
It's harder to categorize the second half of Green Day's catalog. I feel like it's more of a grab bag of unrelated musical statements. I thought Revolution Radio was going to be a new phase for the band, but they followed that up with Father of All...
As for Saviors, I think it's up there among Green Day's best work. I haven't connected with a new Green Day record this much since probably Warning. I wouldn't mind if we get a second album in this vein in another few years.
So glad I found this video. Instantly subscribed ❤️ I’ve been a super fan since I was 10 years old, so a lot of what you said resonates with me. Love this video
As someone who Green Day is there favorite band I think I agree with most of these. BTW I have Ernie on the back of Dookie.
The Network’s album topped FOAM so much
Warning isn’t just underrated - it’s one of their *best* records. I love this band, and I love Warning.
My first rock concert was Green Day’s Warning Tour in 2000, air raid sirens, then the band ran out, Billy Joe jump on top of an amp and they ripped right into my favorite GD song, “Nice Guys Finish Last.” Epic
It has now been 0 DAY(S) since Warning was last called underrated. The record of 1 DAY(S) was recorded on October 3, 2000
@@SGTCloudrunnerthank you bot
Man, as a lifelong fan of the band who started out at Nimrod, tracked back a couple of years before the release of Warning and have been with the band ever since through the good, the bad, and the indifferent, I want to say this ranking is absolutely awesome.
Now, me of years lost and yonder MAY have been combative about American Idiot being number one on that list, but on it's 20th anniversary and, for all the reasons you mentioned, I can't hate on it being #1 on your list. I'm just glad that you gave Nimrod the third spot because, as mentioned, it's where I started with the band before going back to Insomniac, Dookie, Kerplunk, and 1039/Smoothed Out Hours.
I don't have the love for DOS! That you have, but that's a minor qualm and definite background sound. I do like the props you gave to Saviors as, following the album that was Father, it really brings me back to the better days of the band and to what they could still very well be. Which is scary, considering it's now 34 years since their debut proper!
I’m a simple guy. I see ARTV upload Green Day I click
I'm glad Scattered is getting its flowers, such a banger
Warning has been and always will be my favorite album. Cannot stress how much i FUCKING LOVE this album
I do not think American Idiot is their best work, I’d say Nimrod is easily followed by Insomniac & Dookie, then AI
First time on the channel and absolutely love your ranking! You got yourself a new subscriber.
Thanks for that, glad you enjoyed 🤘 check out some of my other Green Day videos / rankings if you’re curious
Damn I waited for this. I would agree on most of your choices and I’m happy to see Savior in the A tier, its such a good album.
Revolution Radio for me gets better & better each year I got it in the B tier now
Awesome ranking man! Green day are my favourite band too and you literally covered everything I could have covered. This made me oddly emotional icl hah they're just so good!
My fave is Rev Rad and Warning (dont attack me guys!) But anyway, Amazing amazing amazing dude!!!
im glad to see a bigger youtuber talk about green day. they dont get talked about enough
While Warning was the first album I remember hearing, it was American Idiot that made me fall in love with them and it also changed my life. Also, I would've loved to see you rate their singles as well but this was still a great video
I swear man, I grew out of Green Day yet i love these. I love seeing you passionately talk about GD
Perfection: Dookie, Nimrod, American Idiot
Great: Kerplunk, Insomniac, 21st Century Breakdown, Warning, Rev Rad, Saviors
Good: 1039/Smooth, !Uno!, Trè!
Meh: ¡Dos! Father of All (even though there is a lot of songs on ¡Dos! that I really like, as well as maybe a few on FOA)
If the trilogy was one album with all the good songs on one album, I definitely think it could’ve been a great album
Some of my favorite Green Day tracks are on UNO. Personally really love that album
Nuclear Family
Stay The Night
Let Yourself Go
Rusty James
Not a favorite but I actually defend Kill The DJ 😅. It’s fun
1. Dookie
2.Rev Rad
3. American idiot

Saviors is def a project I was waiting from them. Revolution Radio was great when it came out but it lacked something that I feel wasn't getting fully tapped into. It's more rock than it is punk and has some pop influences in there but still a solid record. Saviors feels like a modern green day doing punk again. I can't get enough of it. I need to listen to all of their music again at some point. I think it's been 10+ years since I've really given their whole music a listen through.
14. FOAMF
13. UNO
12. Dos
11. Tre
10. Insomniac
9. 1,039/smooth
8. 21st Century Breakdown
7. Rev Radio
6. Saviors
5. Kerplunk
4. Nimrod
3. Dookie
2. Warning
1. American Idiot
i love green day so much!! i've been a casual listener for years but they only became my favorite band once American Dream came out, and I'm trying to get the money to see them this summer!
here's my personal tierlist while i'm watching the video:
S is legendary album, A is the "above average" good, B is the gold standard, C is "below average", just subpar but not straight up bad, D is kinda bad, F is stands for Forgettable (I can only save Graffitia and Sugar Youth). Tiers internally ordered, best first
S: American Idiot, Dookie
A: RevRad, 21CB, Insomniac, Saviors
B: Kerplunk, Warning, Nimrod
C: 1039, Tre
D: Uno, Dos
F: FoaMF
Ooh this ranking was INTERESTING. Like I think some stuff was comparable to its position on the original ranked, and I figured father of all would be dead last, but there were more than just a couple moments where I was surprised by a particular placement. (funnily enough elementary school age me had just made friends with a classmate who had been raised on green day, and so my first album I was there for at day one was 21st century as well).
Awesome vid! Just a suggestion: after seeing you talk about Depeche Mode in a couple of recent videos, I'd be curious to see you rank all of those albums at some point :)
Would like to make that happen at some point, cheers
First I've seen of your channel and was hoping I'd see American Idiot at 1. Thank you! I love Dookie and Nimrod, but Green Day became my favourite band when American Idiot came out. Listening to it again recently I said to myself "this album is a fucking masterpiece" and it really deserves to be the one considered their best.
I haven't listened to much post 21st Century Breakdown so hard to comment on your whole list, but definitely agree on the top 5.
P.S- I think Shenanigans is a great album and would love to see a video on it 👍
Would LOVE to hear Father of All... played in their current setlist. Such a banger of a track. Gets my blood pumping every time
International Superhits is the only Green Day must-have.
I still feel that regardless of production, Rev Rad is an overlooked masterpiece. That album to me will always be a, "if we were to die tomorrow, I'm going out screaming".
It's glorious and has a sense of finality to it and I'll always love it for that and it'll be my favorite Green day album because of it. I think its a high A tier.
Hot take but I think Rev Rad is their best album since American Idiot not Saviors. S tier at times
Omg I totally agree with you!!
i very much love Warning so much. Such a very mature album and song list.
My personal ranking:
1. Nimrod
2. Warning
3. American Idiot
4. Revolution Radio
5. 21st Century Breakdown
6. Dookie
7. Saviors (I could see this ranking even higher someday soon)
8. Insomniac
9. Dos
10. Kerplunk
11. Tre
12. 39/Smooth
13. FOA
14. Uno
Still my favorite band after all these years. Don’t think they have a bad record.
I think this is the biggest discography you’ve RANKED so far.
Well shit I just found out that my dad had the same birthday as Kerplunk
to be fair, if you saw Green Day in concert after the the unos, dos, tre albums came out, its like as if they were all just one album.
Honestly hearing you talk about you having the same birthday as a green day album is really cute and funny. I also relate to this because I share a birthday with the release of linkin parks hybrid theory and they are one of my favorite bands of all time (r.i.p chester)
Revaluation Radio is how I got into the band. The first song I heard by them was Still Breathing and I was instantly impressed and hooked by the greatness of their music. It made me feel like I had this tight bond with them and I wasn’t alone in my life anymore
1. 21 CB ( I love the beetle's/queen presence in this album. IDC if its an hour + I listen to it daily, and plus this is billies best vocal performance and i can't stop listening to live videos from that era.) A + 10/10
2. Warning (I love this album because of its uniqueness and Billie's strange lyricism and his mature delivery. I also still love how they still got rippers on it like castaway and fashion victim. Top 3: Deadbeat holiday, castaway, Misery)
3. Insomniac (I love how honest Billie is with his lyrics and Mike's insane bass performance!!!!!!!!, Top 3: Stuart & Ave., Brat, Arm. Shanks) A
4. American Idiot (An amazing story of characters I can relate to, and I agree with most of the political statements and how the instruments tie together to amplify the story, Top 3: Letterbomb, st.Jimmy, Homecoming) A
5. Nimrod ( A banger after banger after banger album is all i have to say, Top 3: Scattered, NGFL, and The Grouch) A
6.Saviors (A great return after FOAMF, even though not a clear form of a story, but still nothin but gas besides OEB, Top 3: Saviors, 1981, Strange Days) A -
7. Dookie (i like the lyrics and production but just doesn't resonate with me too much), Top 3: FOD, She, and WTP) B+
8. RevRad (a good return after the trilogy and rehab, Top 3: Outlaws, Forever Now, Too Dumb To Die) B +
9.Tre (A good closer album to me, love billie's voice in this record, Top 3: Brutal love, ALBNT, DRB) B
10. Dos (I like the uniqueness to it. Top 3: Stop when the red lights flash, stray heart, and ashley) B -
11.Uno (good job on sounding like their younger selves, still repetive tho) C+
12. Kerplunk (its a good start to their career, not my fave tho.) C+
13. FOAMF (its got some good ones but majority bad) D+
14. Shenanigans (it's alright) D+
15. 1039 / Smoothed Out Slappy Hours (I never grasped on to it really) D-
Maybe it's because it's the last multi-part track they've released, or because it absolutely slaps when they played it last during the RevRad tour, but Forever Now is honestly one of the best Green Day songs ever. Top 8 for sure.
Need that shenanigans review. That album is so good and underrated
Insomniac is the best Green Day album and you described it perfectly. The only problem is it’s not at 1
YES FINALLY SOME LOVE FOR 80 MY FAVORITE SONG
Great video, I wouldve done the list a bit differently but I was wondering if you would ever rank their other band albums like foxborro, the network, pinhead gunpowder, ect
Maybe!!
I’ve been a fan since ‘94, and I may disagree with some of these rankings, but I appreciate your fervor and conviction.
My Ranking (though it changes day to day):
14. Uno
13. Kerplunk (It's not bad, I just don't come back to it)
12. Tre
11. Revolution Radio
10. Dos
9. 21st Century Breakdown (listened to this too much and got sick of it)
8. Father of All...(honestly love this one, think it's a blast)
7. 39/Smooth
6. Insomniac
5. American Idiot
4.Saviors
3. Warning
2. Dookie
1. Nimrod
Like I said, this changes daily. It seems like blasphemy to have American Idiot at 5 but, while I still love it and owe it so much to shaping my music tastes, I just find myself not coming back to it as a whole. I'll listen to a few tracks here and there. And while I say that Nimrod is my favorite, I don't think it's perfect. But the only song I don't love is Last Ride In. I think it makes the whole album stop for no reason. Dookie is a no-skip album for me. The difference is that I enjoy the punchiness of Nimrod's songs much more. Warning and Saviors could go back and forth. I feel like Saviors was able to do what Father of All was trying to do better. I really love how short and sweet Father of All is. Me and my brother are alone in enjoying that album. He actually told me Father of All is his favorite of their albums. Shocking, I know. When I first fell in love with Green Day, I loved American Idiot but loved the theatrics and bombast of 21st Century Breakdown more. So I listened to it over and over and over. Now I can't listen to the long songs for more than a minute without getting bored. Similar thing happened with American Idiot for me. I think Jesus of Suburbia is the crowning achievement, hands down their best song, but for me She really means the world to me so it's my favorite. I also thoroughly love Shenanigans. There was a time where I would have said it was my favorite of everything they've done. While it is still very high on the list, I have to acknowledge that is in truth a compilation, and therefore cannot be properly ranked.
Thanks for the video Jon!

My favorite is Warning as far as album but favorite song is still Whatsername hands down. Honorable mentions to Amy, Deadbeat Holiday, Longview, Misery, and King for a Day
i’m going to watch them live for the first time in the summer, on the saviors tour, playing american idiot AND dookie 🤤
Real commentary though, As someone who grew up with American Idiot and International Superhits being my first exposure, then going back to Dookie and playing it for 100+ hours, and THEN Finding Insomniac, I think I can safely say that Insomniac is my favorite Green Day album. Dookie has the incredible, lovable "Fuck it" attitude about it with a lot of sincerity. American Idiot has the world-stopping power of "Fuck you" political punk rock just at the right time. But Insomniac represents (to me) all those nights you spend in between those events. I think they REALLY perfected their craft with it, because to me there's not a single skippable song on the album. I may be talking out of my ass. Not out of nostalgia, but out of lived experience. That's just my take.
THIS. I also think it's incredible that you arrived at this opinion with the bias of hearing many more successful albums before this one, instead of someone as old as me having listened to it all in chronological order 😅
@Jane-pr3wu I appreciate it! I tend to like albums that make me feel more visceral feelings, and while all three that I mentioned do that, as a massive testament to Green Day's talent, Insomniac is the one that is just the most visceral, unapologetic, and honest in my opinion. But we're all spoiled for choice between 3 stellar albums along with the rest of the discography, do I appreciate all other opinions.

Jon, been watching you for a few years now and I really think you’d love the band Origami Angel. Check out their album Somewhere City. Its AMAZING.
It's really interesting to see someone who got on board at 21st Century talk about this band. We have polar opposite views on what we like about them and what we merely tolerate.

Great Video! You think you will revisit the RHCP-Ranking? Given that 2 (really great) albums came out since 2016 and John is back, maybe you can update your ranking? I'm really interested, if your preception of their discography has changed with the comeback of John...
Yes!! Planned for later this year!

I love everything 21st century and before. anything after that is a HUGE decline.
they put out father of all on my birthday...that was my reward for worshipping them my entire life
What happened to the MGK Trippie Redd video? I saved it but now it's gone. Was it maybe the risky thumbnail?
I have to say, after seeing them play in Wembley and perform some of the Saviors songs, it's as good as Dookie and Insomniac to me, with American Idiot taking the crown.
And I’m super duper excited for their summer tour Imma cry knowing I will be able to hear all of American idiot live IN FULL that news to me was a dream come true
AND DOOKIE! AND RANCID! AND THE LINDA LINDAS!
I'm not excited about the pumpkins tho. I hate that I'll have to see Billy Corgan.
@@alexallen6286 I mean I’m not well versed with the other bands but I’m stoked to see em all live!
@@sainttimmy highly recommend rancid. Punk legends, some of the best bass playing ever laid to tape.
And the Linda Lindas are punk's next big thing.
@@alexallen6286 oh I love how punk the Linda Linda’s are and I’ve heard of rancid I just am not sure where to start but I’m itching to get myself familiar abit with these legendary groups
@@sainttimmy if I had to recommend a couple rancid songs (I know you didn't ask) I would start with the songs 'hyena' and 'maxwell murder'

Waiting? It's Warning ⚠️
Love Green Day. They are my favorite band and I'm from their hometown of Pinole, CA. Though my list is in a bit of a different order I can't disagree with anything you said. I got into Green Day (and really caring about music as a whole) with 21st Century Breakdown so it has a special place in my heart even though I wouldn't call it my favorite. Here is my ranking of Green Day.
1. Insomniac
2. Nimrod
3. Dookie
4. American Idiot
5. Kerplunk
6. 21st Century Breakdown

Yes! Finally someone who loves nightlife!
Two of my favorite HIGHLY underrated GD tracks: the sweeping grandeur of “Last Night on Earth” from 21st Century Breakdown and the power pop perfection of “8th Avenue Serenade” from Tre.
On the flip side, one of my biggest gripes with 21st Century Breakdown, which would otherwise (musically) be my favorite Green Day album: “See the Light” is such a piss-poor, no-effort shoulder-shrug of a closer to what was up to that point such a sweeping and epic album.
1. Dookie
2. American Idiot
3. 39 Smooth
4. Nimrod
5. Saviors
6. Insomniac
7. Kerplunk!
8. Warning
9. 21st Century Breakdown
10. Revolution Radio
11. Father Of All
