    Even tho a lot of Anthony’s lyrics in RHCP probably don’t have any meaning to uncover, quite a few do. My source is that I’m an English major who studies poetry. I think of songs like ‘Wet Sand’, ‘Venice Queen,’ ‘Sick Love’, and ‘In the Snow.’ Those songs all have profound meaning and thoughtful lyricism. Above all else, he just knows what to do with the song sonically. ‘Can’t stop’ is a good example.

    I’ve always found the discredit for Kiedis’s lyrics pretty funny. Songs like Venice Queen, Don’t Forget Me, Otherside, The Hunter, Power of Equality, Fight like a Brave, Californication (just to name a few) have a TON of meaning. Personally I love trying to figure out lyrics and what the message is behind them.. it was a big reason why I got into the Chili Peppers. Anthony does not get enough credit for what he brings to the band. Just my 2 cents

    The funny thing about that Red Hot Chilli Peppers moment at 8:42 is that how it came about is actually pretty sweet and adorable.
    “While writing the album in Flea's garage his daughter would listen to their songs. At the time of writing, Kiedis was struggling to come up with lyrics for the songs, so just filled in with scat. When a final draft of the album was made and Flea's daughter listened to the final version, she was disappointed that the scat had been removed. So, on the final version of the song in the last chorus, the original scatting vocal was used instead.”

    Imo Kurt Cobain was a master at saying nothing while saying a whole lot with his lyrics. Dude was a true poet even though his lyrics you could argue dont have any deep meanings behind them but they do at the same time. One of the best songwriters of all time

    Cocteau Twins has to be the prime example. I don't know what any of the songs mean, but the vocal melodies are perfect. I also do love bands that sang in languages that aren't my native tongue like Legião Urbana, Asylum Party, Alcest, and the best example of Nena '99 Luftballons'.

    I've definitely noticed over the years I'm more interested in the music than lyrics 99% of the time. Not to say lyrics are useless by any means, but if I don't like the music to begin with it's hard to care about lyrics. As much as Yes get occasionally ridiculed for that and Pink Floyd have messages and lyrics that still resonate with people to this day, I probably would go as far as say I prefer Yes over Pink Floyd, at least for now.

    Three of my all-time favourite bands in this video: Jamiroquai, System Of A Down and the Chili Peppers. Nice.
    People talk about Kiedis not having any vocal talent, but whenever I see a Chili Peppers tribute act, the vocals are the one thing that never sound right, literally 100% of the time. Say what you want about Kiedis, but his lyrics and sound/timbre fit their music like a (velvet) glove.

    Suggestion for part 2: The White Stripes, or Jack White projects in general. Personally I feel like his guitar playing and the music overall is the main draw over the lyrics. Ball and Biscuit is a prime example.

    • @JordanMayjor3p7
      @JordanMayjor3p7 9 месяцев назад

      Yeah, I agree. But I also kinda feel Jack White is original as a guitar player and creative, but his overall skill is mid AF. He likes to play on crappy guitars which is cool, but throw some studio mastering magic you can make anything sound much better. I played a customized garbage quality guitar called affectionately "The Polished Turd" for many years and people offered me up to 800 bucks for it and I would never sell it. But it was my playing and my studio mastering of recordings of it that made it sound good. I broke down and got a rare early 80s Japanese Strat and customized that and wish now I had not played "The Turd" for so long bc now I am way better and it plays so much easier to the point that it feels like cheating.

      I think what he's saying is a lot clearer on songs like you stole the sun from my heart as he isn't having to cram loads in at once as he did in their early stuff (mainly due to Richey writing very wordy, but fantastic, lyrics). Nickys more simplistic style has helped JBD be a lot clearer nowadays.

  • @Tyler108x
    @Tyler108x 9 месяцев назад

    Well I think what matters isnt necessarily the lyrics its how you go about it. Deciding how you are going to handle lyric writing and what part you want those lyrics to play is important.
    With yes the lyrics are all about how it sounds when sung, the rest be damned, to Electric Callboy, its about the lyrics being fun. For Linkin Park it was emotional honestly and clarity, for Eminem who fucking knows but you could argue its about picking apart the world around him with a web of wordplay and double entedere, and for some bands they might as well treat it like they're creating epic poems with a backing track as opposed to songs.
    I don't think any of them are wrong or right, and each can be equally enjoyable, so long as you dont make the listener actively cringe, and ensure the music you're writing & the lyrical style you've chosen can coexist without seeming cheesy or clashing to the point of feeling entirely disconnected from one another
    The only other thing I'd say is that if you write lyrics that are meant to be deep and emotional and impactfully written understand you cant really go the other routes without looking like you ran out of ideas, and if you employ the quote "sillier" format of lyrics to start, be aware that if you can or learn insane lyrical chops you do admittedly have a seriously powerful weapon in your back pocket, but its a double edged sword, because it could either be your secret weapon to bring the house down when theres something you really want to say in a song, but at the same time you don't want you overdo it and have people saying "all their music is just gloomy and depressing without a purpose now, and it saps all the songs energy"

    What frustrates me about this whole debate about lyrics is how its full of contradictions, in rock the same people who constantly, _CONSTANTLY_ complain about the Red Hot Chili Peppers lyrics being dumb, just gibberish, pure baloney, etc. are fans of bands like Butthole Surfers, Pixies, Oasis and anything with Mike Patton which then I just see a bunch of hypocrites because other than sound, the only difference between RHCP and those bands' lyrics is levels of sarcasm. Or in rap, when mumble rap/Soundcloud rap was plaguing us, people defended and bashed the same names for the same reason. Me personally, it depends on the band, some bands have deep lyrics, others don't and both are fine, there's a million different ways to interact with music that aren't limited to "what does it mean????"
