But RUclipsrs reviewing music as allowed under fair use? Nope, that's clearly money that belongs to the record labels! Oh, the irony...

Neither one of them had anything to do with it. Josh Farro brought the Good 4 U lawsuit and Olivia and her team decided to hand out songwriting credits all over the place just in case to cover their ass as a way of avoiding one of these large payouts. Neither Taylor nor Hayley asked for the credit

Dua Lipa recently won one of the copyright lawsuits for Levitating 🙌 to put it simply the plaintiffs realized they had no case and dropped. But now she has 2 more against the same song that are equally ridiculous People these days will sue artists for copyright if a song even has the same “vibe” as another and it’s getting ridiculous. There’s only so many notes on a scale, similar sounding songs are going to be inevitable Luckily 99% of the time, it’s either not even gonna go to trial or the plaintiff humiliates themself when it does lol
The song that immediately comes to mind is Ice Ice Baby considering it directly takes John Deacon’s bass line from Queen’s Under Pressure but adds one extra note, which still makes Vanilla Ice’s logic of that exact statement incredibly lazy and overall just so fucking stupid. Also in regards to that, I think Roger Taylor said it best; “He’s a white rapper from Florida with a funny haircut, what would you expect?”
I know the answer to this one... I think. I remember reading or hearing the answer. The people who made the album asked how much it would cost to use all the samples on this sample heavy album, and got the answer of $100,000. They paid the fee, making it one of the most expensive hip hop/ rap albums at the time. The reason they paid so little per sample was that at the time the copyright holding companies didn't really understand what they were granting until after the fact. Because of its bold sampling style, it became a cult hit more than a commercial success, which wasn't helped either by its upfront production costs. This made the album an initial flop and dinged The Beastie Boys bulletproof commercial record, similar effect to them as Insomniac to Green Day or Pinkerton to Weezer.
I’m surprised you didn’t put Down Under by Men at Work on your list. Why it was taken to court for plagiarism (and what caused the owners to get wind of it) is a fascinating story, and quite tragic too as many believe the loss in court is what ultimately led to Men at Work’s lead singer’s addiction problems and eventual death.
Honestly, as much as Blurred Lines was considered an inescapable annoying mess of a song that everyone hated, I must have been living under a rock at the time because I've never been forced to confront it. That's honestly the case with most songs and artists people hate, hence why a lot of hated artists I'm pretty indifferent to. But on a separate note, I'd honestly rather have to hear Blurred Lines than Smile by Uncle Kracker any day of the week.

I recommend you listen to PXNDX. They were a mexican pop punk/alternative rock mexican band. With supposedly plagiarism to bands like green day my chemical romance and fall out boy. They were one of the most famous mexican rock bands from the 2000s. Even with all the controvesy they are very beloved and nostalgic for all latin early 30s listeners.
The absolute most insane lost case to me is The Most Beautiful Girl In The World by Prince. It prevented the rerelease of The Gold Experience for many years. The songs sound nothing alike at all.

One of my favorite albums, Gaucho (Steely Dan) was plagued by many issues, including drug addiction, death, and expenses. But one of the largest reasons was a plagiarism case pertaining to the title track. Keith Jarret (rightfully if I’m being honest) that the song Gaucho ripped off his own track “Long as I’m Living Yours.”
I've always found these musical plagiarism cases both interesting and infuriating at the same time. The one I always think of is when The Verve got in trouble because "Bitter Sweet Symphony" used "too much" of an orchestral cover of "The Last Time" by the Rolling Stones. It's worth noting that the guy from the Stones' record label who brought about the lawsuit was known for being a massive douche. Imagine not being able to make any money off your most popular song for 20 years. That's what happened to The Verve... Radiohead got sued because "Creep" sounded too much like "The Air That I Breathe" by The Hollies. They lost the suit (an outcome I very much disagree with), but they later sued Lana Del Rey over her "Get Free" for the exact same reason and won. John Fogerty got sued because his song "The Old Man Down the Road" sounded like CCR's "Run Through the Jungle", a song which he actually wrote and sang but no longer owned the rights to. He was basically sued because he sounded too much like himself! That case is proof of how copyright law can lead to some very unusual situations.
The rat bastard behind the situation with The Verve was Allen Klein, the very same rat bastard who screwed George Harrison over during the My Sweet Lord lawsuit.
I think the funniest one is Men At Work being sued for plagiarizing Kookaburra. It's one thing to be sued. It's another to be sued by a creator of a children's song.

Yet after his first big hit, he kinda had a heel-turn in the public eye, with this lawsuit against his biggest hit being a major knock against him. And he seemed to suffer from it the most out of anyone. Then the whole Paula Patton fiasco happened, with the subsequent album’s tanking being the final nail in the coffin for him. And now he seems to be considered a borderline one-hit wonder.

I understood that The Flaming Lips were big fans of the Cat Stevens song; but when you're consciously aware of the similarity, attempts to amend the melody would probably only result in a worse song. A very difficult position. The George Harrison case is interesting because I tend to believe the similarity was subconscious, even though I obviously don't know that. Although ignorance is not considered a viable defence in American law in general; artists are always influenced by what has gone before, so even innovation is the result of influence. Probably why this case dragged on for so long.

Jeremy Messersmith wrote a song called "Purple Hearts" that had potential sonic parallels to Neil Diamond''s "Sweet Caroline". So his people contacted Neil's people to get signed off that while similar, we wasn't stealing from him. He waited to get the release from them, and then published the album and the song as a single.
Oasis never hid the fact they ripped off the Coke song for Shakermaker... they were always brazen, and that seemed to rub some people a weird way, most people rip off stuff and never cop to it, they did, so some people dug their flagrant defiant attitude about it.
