I think it is because most songs come from song writers that shop around for a singer and whatever music they have for the song was just reworked samples from other artists. These guys wrote their songs in their garage as they played.....I miss the old days of the 80's big hair bands....lol
no auto tune? Look up pitch correction...our band used it in the late 70s. Some of us remember Journey when they were a hard rock fusion band. Back before they turned into a top 40 teeny bopper band.
First time I heard this song I was pulling into a motorcycle shop on my Suzuki triple to buy a rainsuit. Raining HARD, soaked to the skin, I sloshed in the door and asked the guy at the counter if he had a rainsuit in a size small. I was single, sad, lonely and raising two kids by myself. We talked, I bought the rainsuit, and he called the next day (got my phone number off the check -- glad it didn't bounce!). We've been married 40 years, and neither of us has ever stopped believin'... the best magic is real, and it's in someone's arms!
Back then I was in school and had no money. If I heard the song at all it was on the radio while sitting in the back seat of the car riding the hump, with other people talking about whatever, and they kept turning down the radio so they could talk. While this was horrible conditions for enjoying music, it was ideal conditions for developing the ability to memorize songs from fragments on the radio. Me and my friends would hang out at night and sing these songs a capella and bask in the beauty of them. Today I have a car with great surround speakers and if one of my songs comes on the radio I make everyone shut up so I can get in the zone with my music. Crank it up.

My generation of music, your right, they dont make it like this anymore. An erra of music, talent, raw skill, great bands, amazing lyrics, and showmanship.
Yeah I don’t see really anything like this in modern music. Not just the raw talent singing and musical quality but the POETIC lyrics where there’s a whole lot more thought put into it. Comparing this to modern mumble rap is so embarrassing
I'm always blown away (and thrilled) when young people discover the music I grew up with. Journey is one DEEP rabbit hole to go down. I hope you take the ride. This is just the beginning. Check out 'Mother, Father' performed live at the same show.
If Silk Could sing it would sound like Steve Perry. It is so fun to watch these young people being amazed by the music we grew up listening to. This is only one of Steve Perry and Journey's songs, all of them are outstanding !
I had never gone to a live concert but I knew my wife's favorite band was Journey. I found out that they were coming to a town within a short drive. I bought tickets and told my wife we were going to meet her sister in that city at an Olive Garden. She did not know where we were going until we pulled into the parking lot. She was blown away but so was I. They were great.
In college in the early '80s, all the guys knew that Journey was 'chick rock'. We didn't know why, but we didn't care. It was pretty cool to see the ladies like great music.
REMEMBER, this was "typical" for music and performances back then. Musicians COMPOSED their own songs. Singers like Steve Perry (the lead singer here) were expected, though he did have some exceptionality to him. There's been no one else that sings exactly like him. Same level, yes. Same style, no. And you are right, there is nothing like this anymore. Listen to everything from the first half of the 1980's. It was just such an incredible time, and an incredible time for music. YOU NEED THIS ALBUM, Escape.
Steve Perry had one of the greatest rock voices. I would put him up there with Freddie, Robert Plant, etc. His wardrobe choices were always interesting. He would even wear borderline negligees at times. Takes a lot of confidence as a straight man to pull that off and he totally did.
Steve Perry is the best. Can never get enough of his talent. Can listen over and over again and watch him perform. No one can match him. Arnel is great too. But Steve OMG..
Journey my favorite band ever! Jump in the Journey deep end !!! The water and tunes are absolutely fantastic!!! Never a bad song. Jump in dude with both feet or head/heart first. You won’t be sorry. Journey On!
Dude he's one of the greatest singers to ever live. Nobody can be seen like him. He had the equivalent to Eddie Mercury if anybody. Plus he grew up in my hometown so I'm Prejudice LOL look it up Hanford California
There is a reason why they call Steve Perry "The Voice". Anyway You Want It is another great song by them. Separate Ways ( Worlds Apart ) is another 1 of they're well known songs. 1 of they're most beautiful songs is When You Love A Woman.
So weird because this specific concert was my second concert ever. The first one was the Texxas Jam a few weeks before, which was an all-day festival at the Astrodome with REO Speedwagon, Foghat, Heart, among others. I was 12 years old and went with my older sister and her friends.
Get a hold of the Live in Houston 1981 video. You'll be totally entertained! One of America's greatest rock bands. Steve Perry is without a doubt the best rock vocalist - his tambre, vocal range, and soulfulness are unmatched. And no one can hold a note like Steve Perry. When he sings, you don't just hear his voice, you feel it! I don't know of any other singer who can do that for me.
Adding Steve Perry to Journey was one of the best moves for music history ever. A good friend used to say "Journey used to make music, now they make money" regarding Steve joining the band, but without him, they'd never had made it like they did.
One thing he has right is they just don't do it like this anymore. Most "concerts" are so phony. This was real, LIVE Rock & Roll. I don't have to imagine being there I can remember. I Journey live, with this lineup, in 1983 it was a great concert. Good times. and no one does it like this anymore.
Journey was one of my top fave bands, the only one that I had every album. So in love with Steve Perry, his voice, and emotions. I saw Journey in concert in Hawaii, when Steve Perry had much longer, shiny black hair, swinging across his back as he sang and moved around. I was far away from the stage, loving the band, especially Steve, but thinking it’s not fair that a man has that beautiful hair!!! Gorgeous man!! And he still is a Gorgeous man, with his beautiful voice and hair!
Freddie Mercury was once asked, "What is it like to be the best singer in the world?" His response was "I don't know, ask Steve Perry!"
I'm fairly certain I'm one of the very few who sees what you did there. That said, Neil Schon wearing an MTV tee shirt is too cool.
Steve Perry is far and away better than Freddie Mercury!!! Steve's voice is iconic!!!
I read it was John Farnham is the singer he said.
And no such thing as Auto tune machines back then. Steve Perry is truly one of a kind singer.

Mother Father is my all time favorite! My son's favorite is Wheel in the Sky :)
@@elsieservant6963 All of those you listed, I never get tired of listening to. Journey is not the same without Perry.
I was in the third row in Cleveland Ohio for the Escape concert this was amazing. No auto-tune straight up like the record
Finally, a RUclipsr that gets it. The world just advanced. I’m shocked.
Most perfectly accurate live singer in the rock genre.
Steve Perry's solo album is totally incredible from beginning to end. Steve Perry is an Amazing singer song writer!
Year I graduated high school. Always will love Journey, my tears were rewarded when they got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
He considered among people in rock n Roll to be in the top ten male vocalists.
He sung it like it's nothing...on a level the most can't reach - legendary!
Perfect commentary. Steve Perry is the voice of Jouney. Always will be, no matter who takes over the lead singing.
In college in the early '80s, all the guys knew that Journey was 'chick rock'.
We didn't know why, but we didn't care. It was pretty cool to see the ladies like great music.
He’s the voice! Forever and always my favorite!❤️
Steve Perry couldn't hit a bad note with a gun to his head. It is physically impossible.
Freddie Mercury was asked what it was like to be the greatest singer of all time and he answered, “ask Steve Perry.”
Steve Perry is the best. Can never get enough of his talent. Can listen over and over again and watch him perform. No one can match him. Arnel is great too. But Steve OMG..
Your reaction is priceless! This voice was my youth. No auto tune. Just talent! Love me some Steve Perry
Steve Perry = The fucking god of voices! ⚘️
Journey my favorite band ever! Jump in the Journey deep end !!! The water and tunes are absolutely fantastic!!! Never a bad song. Jump in dude with both feet or head/heart first. You won’t be sorry. Journey On!
There will never be another ... Seen Journey with Steve Perry on there last tour with him . Journey in my opinion will never be without Steve.
Dude he's one of the greatest singers to ever live. Nobody can be seen like him. He had the equivalent to Eddie Mercury if anybody. Plus he grew up in my hometown so I'm Prejudice LOL look it up Hanford California
Steve Perry is the GREATEST VOCALIST of ALL TIME! PERIOD! Followed by Jimi Jamison of Survivor. Warm regards from Melbourne 🇭🇲
Ah, someone who thought exactly like me..thank you! That's how I ranked them too. Best vocals of all time, Steve Perry, then J. Jamison!
There is a reason why they call Steve Perry "The Voice".
Anyway You Want It is another great song by them.
Separate Ways ( Worlds Apart ) is another 1 of they're well known songs.
1 of they're most beautiful songs is When You Love A Woman.
I agree wholeheartedly!
It's always a relevant song, no matter what the age is. I love this!
Listen to "Mother Father" from same concert. Then you'll understand why Steve Perry was considered best vocalist.
I 2nd this!
You are absolutely right; they DON'T make music like this anymore!! I will be forever grateful for being of this era!!!!
Go down this rabbit hole….you won’t be sorry. This guy - “ The Voice”. Talented men,all 5 but that guy out front…..vocals on a different level.❤️🎼❤️👍
As other people commented, no auto-tune fellows... this is real music you should check out Loverboy and Huey Lewis as well
Journey was one of my top fave bands, the only one that I had every album.
There's no one better than Steve Perry live! No one!!
This song hits and will always hit.....🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥.....I get chills as soon as he says I met her in a smokey room
Up there with Freddie and Elvis? Steve is known as "The Voice." Please react to Mother Father from this same concert. That will show you why. :-)
As duas mslhores vozes do mundo: Steve Perry e Morten Harket.
Steve Perry is the greatest of all time!
