No autotune there boys and girls. Steve Perry, The Voice!!
-#steveperry- 🔥💯🔥
Pure talent.
I seen a video with kids reacting to the Beetles and they were all saying they have to be using auto tune but I had to laugh because it did not even come til 96
In an interview Steve Perry stated this was the most vocally challenging song he ever performed and yet he sings it effortlessly!!! Love Journey!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
When asked how it felt to have the best voice in rock, Freddy Mercury responded,” I don’t know, ask Steve Perry.”
Jonathan Cain said Steve Perry recorded the studio version of Mother Father in one take. His vocals are so beautiful and emotive. Steve wrote or co-wrote most of Journeys iconic songs with Jonathan Cain and Neal Schon who has said they were able to write the music with so much range because of Steve's vocal capabilities. When Jonathan first heard Steve he said there was "no way" Steve could sound as good live as he does in studio recordings. Check out The Escape Tour live from Houston 1981. There will never be another Steve Perry, many have tried, but no one comes close to The Voice.
If you want an example of Steve's voice, I think Still They Ride is the one to listen to.
And if you want an example of his range, Sweet and Simple and Lay It Down
Why Can't This Night Go on Forever, live is incredible.
When I 1st heard Steve Perry I stopped dead in my tracks. I couldn't believe a voice like that was coming out of him
Steve Perry was/is known as The Voice for a very valid reason. I was lucky enough to see Journey live back in the 80s and let me tell you, they were AMAZING. Very few groups can compare today.
Same here. Saw them 2 times in the 80's and they were everything you would hope for and more. Same goes for Pink Floyd.
Not "very few...." NONE!
Live, people, live!! No one better in his prime!
I was somewhat disappointed when I saw them in 1983. They seemed tired compared to the warmup act,Bryan Adams! Steve's voice was nowhere as good as in this video, must have been late in the tour!
When they recorded this song in the studio Steve did it in one take. You got it right it is effortless for him to sing, it comes naturally. Granted he had been singing several songs previously before he got to his one. His stage presence is the best, he likes to interact with the crowd. Here's the link to the full Live In Houston 1981 concert. ruclips.net/video/73hD2BJ1BBs/видео.html After watching this live performance, there won't be any doubt in your mind that Steve "The Voice" Perry is the greatest vocalist of all time in rock. And there were many great ones from back in the day.
No question that the 80s fashions are nowhere to be seen these days. But...can anyone sing like Steve right now? No auto-tune, no lip synch, no tracks...Just a guy singing. Steve Perry never struggled; he had perfect vocal technique. He had an extraordinary mixed voice, which means that the tone was the same from the bottom to the top of his vocal register. There were few times when he actually went into falsetto. And because he was a tenor altino, most guys could not even approach his upper register, much less nail the top notes like it was nothing.
The other cool lthing is that, in the studio, Steve laid down this entire track in one go.
Even Freddie said Steve was the greatest voice in rock music. He was The Voice
Wow, I can’t believe I had never heard this song before! SO moving! And Steve Perry, amazing!! Those runs he did with his voice! Jumping octaves! And he didn’t scream, he sang! Hearing this song makes me even sadder that Steve left the group.
Steve Perry is a vocal beast and Neil Schon is underrated as a guitarist he joined Santana at 15 years old
No auto tune, no backtracks, no lip synching...he gave that his all, and it showed.
Dude, eat the words. Steve Perry was hugeeeeeee back in the day. He's a legend!
Thank goodness RUclips exists so young people today can hear what actual musicians used to sound like.
Great reaction! Here is why Steve Perry is the best in my opinion (yes, better than Freddie!): Emotion - nobody makes you feel the song like he does. He pulls you into the story. Mercury's only emotion was adding grit to his vocals. Vibrato - it is natural and consistent. Freddie's was so inconsistent, and he admitted he struggled with it. Pitch - Perry's pitch both live and in the studio was impeccable. Freddie was often pitchy, going a bit off-key. Control - not just pitch and vibrato, but the way he can seamlessly bounce from high-to-low notes was unmatched. Influence - Perry drew from the great R&B / Black Gospel-type singers (Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding), which you can really hear in this video. Mercury was trained in opera (I hate opera!).
I agree with you. I've listened to both Perry and Freddie's isolated vocals, and Freddie's weren't as clean and pure as Perry's.
Cannot agree more!! Look at my comment here.
Freddie is overrated in my opinion. He always sang like he was at a broadway musical instead of a concert. Very dramatic and no feeling in his singing.
Steve "The Voice" Perry not only was the best at what he did, but EVERY song that he sang came from his inner being. You watch his face while he is singing his song, no matter what it is, he is into it. I was blessed to see him on stage and he was amazing. Have fun enjoying Journey!
Steve Perry, Neal Schon, and Steve Smith are arguably the greatest musicians of their era. Steve Smith is among the greatest drummers of the last 50 years!
Who's crying now from the same concert is phenomenal
my favorite
Steve Perry is "The Voice".
No other even comes close!
Fashion is different every decade or so. Would love to see you decked out in some of the shit we wore in the 60s and 70s, not to mention the hair!!!
I saw you say that he’s no Freddie Mercury or Elvis and I side-eyed you hard dude. 🤣🤣🤣
glad you admitted you were wrong.
Great reaction! If you want another awesome live performance, try "Still They Ride" from Tokyo 1983.
As it happened..the one of best singers and the one of the best guitarist in the world met up in Journey...Jonathan Cain is a killer on the piano and the same with rest of the band...But Steve and Neal really something out of this world...And at this very performance..this song...they all did the best performance I ever seen or heard them do in any video...And that concert..well I envy all that was there....wow..just wow...
Not to mention Steve Smith as one if the best Drummer in the world, ask any professional Drummer .
“Why Can’t This Night Go On Forever” is one of the greatest unheard love songs. Steve really shines and Neal gets ample solos. Play this for your girl on Valentines Day! You won’t be disappointed.
was our wedding song
Dynamite track!👍
❤ HIS VOICE IS SOOOOOO NATURAL AND CLEAR.
Dude Freddy was awesome too. Freddy was interviewed once and was asked how it felt to be the best singer. His reply was . I don't know why don't you ask Steve Perry. He was a fan of Perry's. As are we all . Lol
I really enjoyed watching your reaction to Mother, Father, thank you so mich. I've been a huge Journey fan for many years, and I feel so fortunate that I grew up during that time. I feel like we had some of the best music. Steve Perry's voice is so angelic and magical. There are so many songs of theirs that I love, but a few that I could think of for reaction videos would be "Winds of March" from 1978, "Faithfylly," ""Still They Ride," Don't Stop Beleivin'," and "Who's Cryin' Now?"
Sorry for the typo. That's "Faithfully".
Steve was the best. And this lineup is extraordinary.
Interesting to note that Steve actually started as a drummer. The entire band has great skills on their own. They pretty much created arena rock and rock ballads
Bill Graham Productions were the first to use cameras filming and projecting onto screens on either side of the stage. Day On the Green 1983 was the first time. The book in the box set of Journey has a copy of the newspaper article about the show, and I WAS THERE!
Perry has been a bass guitarist for a long time and has done backing vocals and bass for a number of groups. Is also a sound engineer.
Never forget this guy Soo special people fantastic singer ever Soo smooth sweet sounds already Mr perry still the one the golden voice ever no body can sing like Mr perry anymore 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Steve Perry, the Voice; Neal Schon, one of the best melodic guitar players ever; Jonathan Cain, classically trained keyboardist and amazing song writer; Steve Smith, voted all-around best drummer 5 years in a row; Ross Valory, the original Journey bassist known for his progressive style. A phenomenal band! Check out Still They Ride.
This is my favorite Journey song and I`m so happy I got to see him perform this live twice in the 80s easily one of the best concerts I`ve ever been to..They have always been my #1 group!
Same here! It was magic!
I am soooo jealous. Journey never came to Winnipeg.
He was a drummer/vocals before Journey. He can play bass. He is very rhythmic./ melodic. Big into as is most of the band, other guys.
R &B
Steve Perry is….will always be the voice! I love him so much!
Always watch Journey or most 80's groups live. They earned their way performing for audiences and they really know how to engage them. Another Journey song to try is Still They Ride
I was 12 when this album came out. Like all Journey fans during that era, our formative years were musically captured by the supernatural-like vocals of Steve Perry and the sound of this great band, then and for years to come. Good to see the younger generation of fans appreciate their sound and recognize such beautiful music because unfortunately it's not made today!
This is what talent looks like. Unlike the mess of today.
For more Journey (and you can't go wrong with anything by them), I would suggest Faithfully, Wheel in the Sky, Stone in Love, Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' and Feelin' That Way/Anytime from their 1978 Midnight Special appearance.
This is my fav, really shows off Steves phenomenal vocals and his control (same live as recorded). The band is amazing, perfect together. Love it. Thanx so much, Peace
No hay ninguna duda de que Steve Perry es la mejor voz de toda la historia
Amen
The ending was so Steve could rest his vocals, I believe. I read that they highlighted each musician in the group each time they sang this for that reason. This concert just happened to be the time for Cain
Edited to change text to rest
Who's Crying Now...same 1981Houston Concert is another great song.
Shoot he leaves Freddie way behind in Vocals.....I like Freddie....but he can't hold a candle to Steve and his Voice
Start with their first album and move your way up the spectrum. You won't be disappointed.
Steve did say this was the hardest song he ever sang. You can see at the end of the video how exhausted he looks. He’s amazing!
You need to check out some of Steve's solo work too. I love him in Journey and as a solo artist~
He’s a drummer and uses his bass guitar when writing songs
With everything you said about The Voice Steve Perry, in studio he did this song in 1 take!! That's amazing!! You have to check out 1979 departure tour in Oaska Japan and listen to, People and Places, Precious Time and Dixie Highway. The 1st 2 are incredible
STEVE is the GOATTTTTTT
You should watch the entire 1981 Houston concert. It will blow you away! Jon Bon Jovi gave Steve the nickname - The Voice.
At the height of Journey's fame my brother (a struggling drummer) found himself in an elevator with Steve Perry, bending his ear about music. He was very friendly and down earth according to my bro.
Check out I'll Be Alright Without You 🎵🎶💚
This performance is why so many people regard Steve as one of the greatest vocalists ever. Check some of the R&B tunes the band jammed on the Time3 set - he's amazing. And don't underestimate Neal Schon (guitar) he actually founded Journey- after he left Santanna's band in the early-70's. He's a phenomenal talent, too.
Steve Perry was so amazing. No auto tune. Just pure talent. BTW, his Nick name across the radio waves was “The Voice” And your comment about him being no Freddie Mercury…. no kidding. He leaves Mercury in the dust!!!! So glad you discovered Journey and Steve Perry!!!! The 1980’s belonged to Journey!!!
Separate Ways, Faithfully, Be Good To Yourself, Lights, Open Arms, Who's Crying Now, Send Her My Love, Wheel in the Sky, When You Love a Woman, Why Can't this Night Go on Forever, Suzanne, I'll Be Alright Without You, etc... etc... etc...
The piano solo is not actually part of the song.
For your next reaction I recommend either “Stone in Love” or “Who’s Crying Now,” from the same live in Houston 1981 concert.
Doesn't struggle because he's pure magic, hence "The Voice" "The Goat". You will never hear a voice like this agai.
My fav journey song is OPEN ARMS. Beautiful song that really showcases Steve's voice.
even his fingers are singing
Bon Jovi dn't name him "The Voice" for nothing. I love Steve Perry
Shame on you... STEVE PERRY IS UNDERRATED... HE IS THE BEST EVER.... THE GOAT
Steve Perry’s vocal gymnastics are incredible. Good God.
The most underrated GOAT... THE VOICE!!!
No one's better than the great Steve Perry
You would love WHY CAN’T THIS NIGHT LAST FOREVER. A real treat. 🥰🔥
I was at this concert in Houston at the Summit (which is now Joel Osteen's church) in 1981. Little did I know then that this concert would become one of the most iconic Steve Perry live performances EVER. The concert (as seen in other songs as well) was flawless. The band were all at the top of their game which only made Steve's vocals that much better. BTW, it is said by Steve that he performed this song in the studio in ONE take. Check it out. Also, check out the isolated vocals of Steve Perrry's voice on these songs. All talent. No machines, no autotune...just men with their instruments and microphones. It is the way music should be presented.
THE "voice"❣️
Hello. I subscribed to your page through Journey, especially Steve Perry, who in my opinion is one of the greatest interpreters that have ever existed and is highly underestimated. After looking at countless criticisms of Journey's performances, I haven't come across any that say Steve isn't voice privileged. I am also a fan of Mercury and even so it seems to me that it is debatable in terms of vocal capacity. Mercury was a great Showman but Perry for me is the voice. Many judge Steve for not having the reaches of before, but what would have happened if Mercury had to suffer the same judgment today? It's not fair. Steve should be recognized for what he left us and what he can provide now. He did not die and he did not have such a controversial life, he did not have a movie and the new generations know him. But, that does not detract from his unparalleled contribution to music. Hopefully and the new generations can know about him. I thank you so much for taking the time to get to know him and I hope you make him known because he deserves it. Thank you
Your observations are spot on! I was there for this tour and to this day it brings tears to my eyes at how amazing they were
You thought Freddy mercury was a better singer??? Glad you realized your mistake!!!😅
Can’t get over the mayonnaise jar behind the couch.
😂free advertising
Still they Ride live in Tokyo not the album, and Open Arms from this concert, any song from this concert...
I had the privilege of seeing Journey on this tour and on tow other tours with Perry at the helm (yes I’m that many years old) and they were phenomenal. Perry never missed a note and Schon/Cain/Vallory/Smith were all amazing in their own right. I laughed when he said that Schon’s first solo wasn’t that hard…it wasn’t hard for him because he has been playing professionally (with the likes of Carlos Santana) since he was 15!!! I was saddened when the Perry fronted lineup parted ways…I saw them earlier this year and they were still good with Schon KILLING it on guitar, but nothing could compare with Perry out front.
Can't believe you've never heard of Steve Perry. LOL He is the best vocalist - of all time! Journey aka Steve Perry is as good if not better live than recorded. He is a master! Freddy Mercury does not hold a candle to Steve Perry!
Omg so appreciated watching you react to this mind blowing masterpiece and seeing ypu realize Steve The Voice Perry is in a league far above any singer in history. Thank you so much for this!! So very much. ❤

Still they ride live in Osaka 1983
To late
Open arms
Steve's voice is still as beautiful today ❤
I seen them in 82. This is no bs they are that good. Definitely one of the better shows l attended.
U are listen the best Malé voice ever no doubt about MR STEVE PERRY..no one can sign like Steve Perry
And never been able to replace him!
Separate Ways. And then try some old school pre Perry Journey.
There was no Journey before Steve Perry. Sorry not sorry.
@@trb2021 not the radio friendly Journey Perry turned them into,no.
Need to listen still they ride
Journey is boss with Steve perry
Love Journey
Freddie Mercury, great a performer as he was didn't always deliver a great vocal live.
He often cut corners.
Steve Perry was as good live - or even better than the studio version - essentially all the time.
Try being 16 and growing up with them. Listen to Still They Ride.
Not falsetto. Perry was a tenor altino then, a very pure voice that sang up in soprano range. It is a type of countertenor but not a common one.
The nickname The Voice was given him by Jon Bon Jovi.
The way he could sing while trotting all over the stage was crazy. All the songs on the Escape album are great but there are a lot more to discover.
I was 14 when this came out. Legendary steve perry the voice.
The Masterpiece
Check out Walks like a lady live Osaka
Welcome to our world.
Another great Journey/Steve Perry song to check out is Open Arms from this same Houston 1982 concert. This man can sing!
I had the pleasure of seeing them 3 times 79, 81 and 83 awesome concerts, the Golden VOICE.
Steve has the best voice ever this song proves it very hard to sing
I never recommend audio reactions, but I do recommend Journey's, "Separate Ways" audio only... it's the only one I like better than their official video.
More songs to check out Lights, Wheel in the Sky, Open Arms and Faithfully
The piano at the end of the video is a piano solo, not part of the song.
It’s really sad that Steve left the band when they were on top. He was burned out from touring 10 to 12 months a year. He was only with them 10 years, but it was magic when they were all together. Steve’s replacement is very good , and sounds a lot like Steve. But still doesn’t bring the magic Steve did,
Mike.. there’s a thing you didn’t know at the time you made a comment during the first reaction to Journey. There was an interview with Mercury.. he was asked …” how does it feels to be the best singer in the world and he replied.. “I don’t know, you need to ask Steve Perry!!” Journey wasn’t even a big band in UK.
The one and only ❤😂
