For those of you who didn’t get to see Journey on the Escape tour…you missed the most epic rock concert you can possibly imagine. Ross Vallory, Steve Smith, Jonathon Cain, Neal Schon and of course Steve Perry were all in their prime and they killed it…I was fortunate enough to see them 3 times during that tour and I can honestly say that I e never seen a better live band.

I’m glad Journey are getting their belated due. They were hated by the critics in the 80s. Yet, to this day young people discover and fall in love with their songs. (Meanwhile, a lot of the acts that were afforded accolades by those same critics are long since forgotten). As freakishly talented as they are as musicians, it all comes down to songwriting. A good song is a good song. And I for one miss the days when songwriters knew a bit of music theory and not just how to operate software.

The lyrics of this song were actually about Steve Perry’s personal life. Interesting fact: when Steve recorded this song in the studio, he did it in ONE take. This song meant a great deal to Steve emotionally, even though he stated it was a very difficult song for him to sing. IMO, Steve was THE greatest rock n roll vocalist of that amazing generation of music, which is saying a lot! Even Freddie Mercury didn’t sing with the kind of passion and soul that Steve did. When Steve sang, you literally felt the lyrics touch your soul. No auto tune. Always perfectly on pitch in live concerts. You just don’t hear music like that anymore. So heartfelt and meaningful. Beautiful melodies and lyrics without cursing, slandering, or degrading other human beings. I feel blessed to have been in high school in that era. SO MANY talented and amazing bands back then and all with their own unique sounds.

I bought the Escape album in 1981 when I was 13 years old and played it until the grooves wore out. I was immediately drawn to this song at first by the amazing guitar solo (Neal Schon is my guitar hero), but ultimately its simply a gorgeous song and has long been my favorite Journey song. And Steve Perry on vocals? Let me just say there will NEVER be a rock voice as powerful, emotional and pitch perfect as Steve's. To this day, at age 56, I've still never heard a male rock voice that can compare to Steve's (even the great Freddie Mercury). Thank you Journey for being such a big part of my youth!

My mom met Steve Perry when I was a baby, and he asked to hold me. (I'm about the age of his daughter and he was missing her). Mom said that he was absolutely graceful and lovely to me, her, and everyone he interacted with. Just thought I'd share that story. I've seen Journey 3x, unfortunately after his departure. Worth it every time!

For those of us who grew up listening to Sam Cooke, we can hear the influence FOR SURE! Sam had such a fluid higher voice. But this showcases Journey at their best. Steve goes higher than any other song I've heard. The piano and guitar solos by Jonathon and and Neal are off the charts. Lyrics - omg. I saw them on this tour in Chicago in 1981 and actually have a bootleg of that show and I saw them in 1983 with my gf. We shared an experience at the 83 Chicago show. Even though it was a high school relationship, it made us closer by sharing it. 40 years later we ran into each other and the first thing she said after "omg" was "Faithfully, Journey - 1983 - I will never forget that". I couldnt have smiled any wider..I told her I still have that memory too. Experience shared.

That song, by far, is the best showcase of Steve's voice. He really shines. It's based on a true story of one of the band members, so it was a very emotional performance. Even Neil's guitar solo was originally a one take ad lib part on the studio record. He waas so spurred on a touched by the song, that he jest fell into it, performed it from the heart. To me, it's the best of Journey.

I saw them live in '79 when I was 14. We were blown away, in shock for the first part of the concert. Steve Perry's voice surpassed the records live. He has that special extra soulfulness live, incredible. Much love from California. You are fun to listen with.

My buddy saw the '80 tour with Gregg Rolie still in the band, same as you saw in '79. This song hits very close to home with me. For the fact that my father was an alcoholic. And my mother just recently died, but she had many nervous. Breakdowns with abuse for my father. I had a sister who took her own life. In 1990 five, it is a song that's solely stricken with Christ. For help! It is in the perspective of the brother. That's why he talks about as he sings. She sits alone a mother's face. She wears not mother as in his own mother, but his sister, who took care of him when they were growing up, and she gave up her own life to protect her brother as. Her father died and her mother also died! You really have to look Deep into the song to get the True and full meaning of the aspect from where these lyrics have come from.

I'm glad you spent time reading the lyrics. Most people are so mesmerized by the music they don't hear the great lyrics. The music (and its various moods) makes more sense when you know the words. It's a masterpiece - and the band was so freaking tight, instrumentally and vocally. BTW, the number 7 in the bible is called the perfect number. Journey has always been known not to be any kind of religious band, but certainly a band that had some spiritual / biblical references in several songs. Steve Perry was Catholic back then and Jonathan Cain is Christian; two of the principle songwriters.

Steve Perry uses at least four distinct "voices" in this performance: his "usual" clear, pure tone; the rock/soul rasp/scream/growl; a different, dialed back tone to blend with the band on the harmonies; and an actual falsetto (his regular range is so high he rarely uses it).

Journey is one of the best bands ever! They’ve evolved and regrouped times and will celebrate fifty years! But that being said even though all their vocalists have been great, there is no one like Steve Perry. He is the magic that made this band what it is. He is the GOAT.

  • @scottanderson2262
    @scottanderson2262 Год назад +6

In my opinion the Escape album and tour is Journey and Steve Perry at their absolute pinnacle! Escape is my desert island record no question! In the Escape era, the addition of Jonathan Cain really breathed new life into the group and elevated the already phenomenal song writing to an entirely different level! Don’t get me wrong, I adore the earlier stuff as well, but that album was amazing from front to back! And Steve’s voice had matured to have a richer tone with an added dimension without sacrificing any of his style or range, and his vocal runs are flawless and just off of the charts. This is why NOBODY sounds just like Steve Perry. He has such a soulful undercurrent that subtlety colors everything he sings with his unmistakable signature sound.
Journey has found, and completely worn out, some very talented replacement singers, and they do sound similar enough for the band to continue without Steve, but true fans immediately hear where they fall short of the master. It’s one thing to just hit the notes, certainly no easy feat for mere mortals, but capturing the all important nuances has so far continued to prove an illusive quest.
I actually saw Journey only a couple of months ago and sadly the magic is gone. The band, all 12 of them according to what was on the stage, appeared to be phoning it in and it really felt like there was zero heart or fire present in the performance. And poor Arnel is sadly on his last leg vocally. He visibly struggled the entire show and it appeared and felt very forced, even handing off several of the more vocally challenging songs including Mother, Father to other members. Not to take anything away from their phenomenal drummer Dean Castronovo who does an incredible job and probably could front the band arguably better than any of the other vocalists hired post Perry. But the heart and soul of the group was noticeably absent, it seems they are now just a corporation attempting to keep the brand alive. I feel they are tarnishing the legacy and that makes me sad.

So well said I 16:35 had to read it a second time ! I too have tried to watch currant shows and get so sad. They just seem to be going thru the motions- no heart just memorized till it old hat for them and are up there for the money. So sad, but thankfully we have these to listen to. On a side note, what it must have been like to have all these choices with which to sing these songs- Steve was so spot on. This gift doesn’t come along often, if ever again. PG!

First of all, thanks for making my day a better one. Love your reaction with Mother/Father. Jonathan Cain joined Journey at this point in time. He took over on keyboards, guitar, and background vocals. He and Steve wrote that song, and we know the rest is history, as they say. Wish Steve was still part of Journey, but his replacement sounds almost like Steve, but he also has his own distinctive sound, Arniel P. Also, today's version is sung by no other than Deen Castennos. Sorry if the last name is spelled wrong. And it's just as amazing as it was back in the day. Thanks again, Rosalie. Make it your day and Smile at someone ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I got to see them just a week prior to this performance when I was a senior in high school. Saw them Halloween night, 1981 in Mobile, Alabama. Yeah, man, good times. 1981 Represent! Ha ha.

I grew up in the 80s listening to Steve Perry and Journey there is no replacing Steve's vocals he's one of a kind in soul, passion, power, and inflection. John Bon Jovi called him the voice, Freddy Mercury called him the greatest rock n roll vocalist now that's some pretty good references. What more do you need.

Can you believe back then you literally never knew if a band could actually perform their music live like the album. Thats all we had was our albums and the radio. Yes this was pre MTV. Then if you were lucky you could go to a show and hope they were as good as their album. Even the first MTV videos were sort of a lip syncing performance art. Early Journey was my favorite, the songs were magical filled with emotion and layers not just pop to appeal to the masses. This proves that they are the real deal, so glad this is caught on video and will thrill people for all the years to come!

Actually - read up from Wikipedia, pretty sure there is an interview on RUclips where Steven mentioned this fact. It is part of the reason there is such amazing video from a 1981 concert! Here's the copy paste from Wiki. The material of the show was recorded and filmed for the then-fledgling MTV network on Journey's Escape Tour on 6 November 1981 at The Summit in Houston, Texas, at the height of the band's commercial success.

This is a great song and live show and it includes the best line-up of the band (IMO), including Ross Valory on bass and Steve Smith on drums, both of whom were kicked out of the band for BS reasons during the recording of the album Raised on Radio in 1985 (both of them ended up returning to the band for extended stints, as recently as 2020). Steve Perry is simply an incredible vocalist with tons of natural talent. Randy Jackson (from American Idol) replaced Ross Valory on bass during the late 80's and he called Steve Perry "The Voice". On a side note...if you are into instrumental jazz-fusion music, you should check out a live video from Vital Information, which was Steve Smith's side project. He is an absolutely phenomenal drummer, but you wouldn't necessarily pick up on that with the straight-ahead rock drumming he did for Journey (he has been voted #1 all-around drummer by Modern Drummer magazine 5 years running and he was included in their list of top 25 drummers of all time in 2001).

So there's a song called '7th son of a 7th Son" by Iron Maiden that speaks of this mythological folklore.
I know you were recently turned on to some metal bands. Maiden is one of the greatest ever to do it - but also with a very melodic sound so it appeals to people (such as yourself) that likes metal but not the real horrible screaming that is found some genres of metal.
7th Son is one of my all time favs by Maiden and is an epic song from it's composition and lyrics. I highly suggest giving this one (and Maiden in general) a chance to tickle your new interests in pursuing some of the premiere heavy metal artists.

I was at this concert in 81 in Houston. This was one of the best vocals I have ever heard in concert. The ladies in the Summit were screaming so loud and when Perry sang the softer they melted. Schon on guitar was great. Cain's piano was fantastic.
