Perry is one humble cat. I bumped into him (literally) in an LA music club a couple of years back and he was profusely apologetic over it. When he saw that I recognized him (I just said, “Hey man, nice voice!”), he smiled, grabbed my arm and said, “Thank you, thank you...really appreciate it!”
I would hope to be that cool if I "bumped into" him. I first saw him in concert with Journey while in college in the early 80's. I was 100% hooked and an absolute fan. I watched a CBS Sunday Morning™ interview with Steve Perry & 1 thing that really stood out was that he said, "I always felt like an outsider" (in Journey) and like he was always the "new guy" and didn't fit in. Neal Schon, however, OMG! Well let's just say that humility would not accurately describe Neal😮

Here is what I love about Steve Perry. He has a warm spirit. He seems to be a faithful type of person. He showed respect to his mother by caring for her. I value those simple things.
duradim I don't think that caring for his mom was a simple thing, he was a only child for her and his father left when he was so young, so they were each other rock and she nurtured and encouraged him. It's just mind boggling to me that we almost lost sharing in his precious gift to some turkeys😁 but lucky for us he decided that not singing would definitely make a turkey out of him.💞😍🍀

His voice range was higher than Sam Cooke’s. He has hit C6 - extraordinary!! He could also sing with a raspy voice like Otis Redding if he chose. Sam Cooke did not ever sing with a raspy voice. I grew up in the Sixties and was a huge soul music/ Motown fan. As was Steve Perry. Check out Bob Fosse - you’ll see Michael Jackson.

I don’t think he’s underrated at all. He’s widely recognized as one of the all time greatest voices in rock. Most people think the new guy is fine but we all agree he’s not as good as Perry. He’s in the R&R HOF. His songs are celebrated around the world and EVERYONE in the bar sings along when they come on the jukebox. Exactly what else would you like in order for him to be properly rated?

i was watching some " We are the world" vids and Steve Perry's golden voice made me go down the rabbit hole to watch some interviews that he's done. What a treasure.
That is exactly what happened to me, too! I just watched the Netflix documentary on the making of, "We Are The World", and Steve's voice hit me once again & I have been watching Steve Perry videos ever since!
I once sat across from Steve in a restaurant in Studio City and of course I wanted to tell him how much I loved him, I actually even shot photos of him at a show on the For Love of Strange Medicine tour and he was incredible, being so close I could really hear all of his great vibrato so clearly, and he would even pose for me once in a while, but no way was I going to interrupt him eating dinner, he's a real class act, such an amazing person!

just getting to know this great "fellow Valley guy" (I grew up 25 miles from Steve ). My school (Tulare Union High) played Hanford and Lemoore in sports. But...I am 4yrs Steve's senior. we also went to College of the Sequoias....different dates! So neat getting to "know" this talented man!!!!
He's decompressed for a long time and had time to learn how to compartmentalize those demons. He has plenty of REASON to throw people under the bus, and to resent life for taking Good from him, but he's still giving.

I can see some 'brown' skin tones in him. Always thought it was American Indian. But now that makes sense. Seeing as how Portugal has a mix of Arab and northern African over time.
Many Portuguese with the surname PEREIRA changed the name to PERRY once they they reached California. My grandparents reached California from Kauai around 1912 but kept the Medeiros name.
Steve is the best! Humble grounded intelligent with a great sense of humour. He was smart about how he managed himself and his incredible gift back in the day and self aware enough to know when he was in trouble. That is why he's still here and still singing 40 years later.
My discovering of Journey went like this. Growing up pretty poor and it was just one of a very few times my parents had some spare change. At 11 years old in 1981 our family went to either Woolworths or Woolco (can't remember which one) but, my brother came up to our mom and asked if he could get this album (Joan Jett) she said yes. I asked if I could get one too, she said yes. I went over to the record section and started looking and found, what I thought was incredible album artwork. Not knowing anything about it, I had picked up Journey Escape and that was what I got..................turned out to be my favorite band!
I found him on my Walkman. "Separate Ways." I'd heard Santana, SRV, Sinatra...and the 50s stuff, but I don't recall many men singing this high as a kid

I have always been fascinated by just his speaking voice. He comes across as such a down to earth guy - someone that you could just chill and have a quiet cup of coffee with. He's so witty and just naturally relaxing.

Steve Perry is one of my all time favourite singers. I saw Perry and Journey live in Calgary in 1980. The drummer threw his broken drum sticks into the audience and I caught them. That was a great concert and the acid helped too.
Being a vocalist all my life I understand his passion and walking away. I did the same. Sometimes you can get to the point where you feel your life is controlling you. You have to step away from yourself and evaluate what spiritually moves you. He has a great spirit. He is very smart as well. He is now living his passion. by

I am never ceased to be wow'ed by Steve Perry. His voice is a one in a Millennium, who has sung, written and co-written some of the most iconic songs ever. Having watched him over the decades, I can see that he has worked through some of his demons. And good to see he has dealt with many of them. Having worked in the MH field, I can see when people have worked through things and those that did not. I bought his latest album and his voice is just as awesome, and there is a whole lot of feeling in his words too. I just wish we could see and hear more of him.
Steve is definitely one of my all time favorite singers.. would be so honored to meet him....its so good to see him being happy and loving what he's doing again....Thank you for coming back.

I think he went through a horrible emotional time with his mother and the ex girlfriend . He had no time to recoup and he was fragile

I can see some 'brown' skin tones in him. Always thought it was American Indian. But now that makes sense. Seeing as how Portugal has a mix of Arab and northern African over time.

Many Portuguese with the surname PEREIRA changed the name to PERRY once they they reached California. My grandparents reached California from Kauai around 1912 but kept the Medeiros name.

Steve is the best! Humble grounded intelligent with a great sense of humour. He was smart about how he managed himself and his incredible gift back in the day and self aware enough to know when he was in trouble. That is why he's still here and still singing 40 years later.
My discovering of Journey went like this. Growing up pretty poor and it was just one of a very few times my parents had some spare change.
At 11 years old in 1981 our family went to either Woolworths or Woolco (can't remember which one) but, my brother came up to our mom and asked if he could get this album (Joan Jett) she said yes.
I asked if I could get one too, she said yes. I went over to the record section and started looking and found, what I thought was incredible album artwork. Not knowing anything about it, I had picked up Journey Escape and that was what I got..................turned out to be my favorite band!

I have always been fascinated by just his speaking voice. He comes across as such a down to earth guy - someone that you could just chill and have a quiet cup of coffee with. He's so witty and just naturally relaxing.

Steve Perry is one of my all time favourite singers. I saw Perry and Journey live in Calgary in 1980. The drummer threw his broken drum sticks into the audience and I caught them. That was a great concert and the acid helped too.

Being a vocalist all my life I understand his passion and walking away. I did the same. Sometimes you can get to the point where you feel your life is controlling you. You have to step away from yourself and evaluate what spiritually moves you. He has a great spirit. He is very smart as well. He is now living his passion.

I think announcing that online might not be the smartest move. I've seen people go out after that. Then people say sobriety or however they got it "doesn't work." It's not good for people to brag about it. No former drunk needs that. It's almost a guarantee to fail...
This is the BEST interview I have seen with Steve. Man, Steve needs to seriously realize how much of a positive impact he gave all of us with his singing. Greatest male vocals of all time. It was cool to hear some other things about the past.

I am never ceased to be wow'ed by Steve Perry. His voice is a one in a Millennium, who has sung, written and co-written some of the most iconic songs ever.
Having watched him over the decades, I can see that he has worked through some of his demons. And good to see he has dealt with many of them. Having worked in the MH field, I can see when people have worked through things and those that did not.
I bought his latest album and his voice is just as awesome, and there is a whole lot of feeling in his words too. I just wish we could see and hear more of him.
