For selfish reasons I would have loved to see Mr. Perry, just keep on singing with Journey because he is one of the Greatest Ever to do it. But listening to him in this interview makes you understand why he stepped away and I can respect that as a human being. Certainly a Hall Of Famer! Wish him well!
Keep in mind that he can’t sing in that range anymore. He’s in his 70s now. He is the best of all time but he can’t hit the high notes anymore. That’s normal, he’s older now
I got to see Steve Perry in 1980 live. It was crazy amazing. Got to see REO Lover Boy Styx Foreigner Van Halen and many many more during that 80-83 span of time. Good times
Yes, a rare voice in a world of good singers which is easily identifiable. The noted singers like Steve Perry, Dennis De Young, and Rodger Hodgson are easily recognizable and fabulous at their craft.
He’s a guy that understands the seasons of life. I don’t believe he enjoyed fame in the end. He doesn’t need notoriety for self actualization. He’s always been my favorite singer, loved Journey. So glad he found his peace.
I drove him from Stouffer's in St. Louis to a restaurant (that I can't remember the name of). I was working for Primo Limo at the time. Our last stretch was out on a run and they sent me in a Town Car. I apologized to him for not having a stretch and he not only was cool with it, but he sat up front with me! He had me pull into.a McDonalds and run in and get him a burger and coke because he hated the food at the restaurant he was about to go to. He was very chatty and nice. He shook my hand and said, "Thanks for the ride".
Steve Perry is the greatest singer of all time. I have such wonderful memories and I still today at the age of 54 he is my favorite. I still listen to all his music.
I was homeless down on my luck drinking he gave me 20 bucks and said make sure you get some food I just remember he was really nice and I recognized him right and he looked great
It's a shame that the members of journey ,did not listen to his suggestion of not take make anymore music under the name of journey .until he was ready to come back. Like he asked make music under another name .leave journey alone he asked I understand. They are not journey without Steve Perry . I wonder what would have happened if they would have listened
With the new lead singer that they've had for the past 14 years, it's actually worked out quite well. They are filling stadiums again and producing music with a very similar sound, enough that many people are enjoying their music again. Go Journey!
Lately I have been feeling some stress, at times a little lost in it. Of all of my CD’s, the only one I want to listen to in my car is Journey’s greatest hits. Steve’s voice is helping me feel like my happy self and not so lost in my concerns. Thank you, Steve
I miss Steve Perry so much. Phenomenal singer, one of the very best! Fantastic band, a top rock band of all time! Where would the 80s be without Journey?❤
Hi Cathy. One of the top 3 male vocalists in the world!!!!!! I was in college in the early 1980s. Every journey concert was sold out show after sold out show. That album. Escape put them on top of the world at that time. See the live version of “send her my love”. Amazing performance
He was lost in a dream and was able to own his life by stepping down and living and later finding love admist critical circumstances. Happiness is not all about success but finding love with the right people.
I was fortunate to see Journey live in '83 during the Frontiers Tour. I was about 20 rows back on the floor section, and all of a sudden, the crowd started leaning to one side, then the other side, and at one point, my feet were off the ground! It was a wild experience as a teenager in high-school.❤👍🙏
We really miss you Steve! You are the greatest voice on history We love you and you leave a permanent mark in our hearts, we support your desicion, we will always love you! Greetings from Colombia 🤗
Always admired his amazing voice but this interview was equally impressive as it showed his thoughtful insightful answers to the questions. Great talent.
What a smart in tune individual. He has really worked on discovering himself and the relationships that moulded such professionalism. Steve you did it right.🙏 🥹👍🎸🔊✌️
This was a genuinely incredible interview. I never knew how top-notch of an interviewer Dan is. Excellent questions. I love Steve Perry's genuine demeanor and transparency.
Don’t stop believing song relates to everyone. We all struggle for something better and we all have dreams and it isn’t easy to achieve. I have added to this song to my playlist when I need encouragement. The first time I heard this song as a teen in the 80’s, at that time I was depressed. It played on the radio and I just blasted it. I actually forgot about my depression. Thank u Journey and Steve Perry for singing that song. I still love it
Just watched the documentary on the making of “We Are The World” and he was a giant among ants in terms of singing. They criminally underused his talent.
Some would say that Brad Delp from Boston was as good if not better than Steve Perry but I agree that Perry is better. Delp had a fantastic range but Perry could sing anything from a ballad to hard rock. Plus, Perry had better staying power.
What an insightful and literate gentleman. I appreciate his forthright disclosure and humility in recognizing how others shaped and molded him. Boy what I’d give to spend some time talking with him.
0:23 I loved him. His answers to the interview was very deep. Now i learned something from this interview. Your voice is an instrument. In the 70's I used to be in the band. We had a gig in Tokyo . I lost my voice, and it made me think that i was the only one who had suffered and not the musicians . Because I'm an instrument and it was really hard to maintain. Whereas when you play with instruments, you can always replace the strings of the guitar or fix the keyboards easily. If you know what i mean. 11:06
A very honest conversation with one of music's great singer, songwriter, and performer. I loved the Greg Rollie, Steve Perry combination era of Journey. There was so much variety in sound and such a rich blend of styles. I think when Jonathan Cain came to Journey he brought great songwriting, but it became more formula driven for the radio.
OMG Exactly 5:33 The mystery as to why the voice is so elusive in its ability to perform. To hear Steve say it happens to him as well gives me hope. And, once again, Dan Rather has turned out to be one of the best musician interviewers because of the good questions whose answers he never interrupts. The Anti-Howard Stern.
This time stamp right here was the most realist shit I ever hear about singing in my life! Some people act like with singing technique that "either you got it or you don't" but it's not that simple for the exact reasons Steve Perry describes! I think he left out when you're sick in a certain way (i.e. congestion), it can make it sound like you never sung a day in your life because you have very little control of your vocal chords >_
But “that’s why you get paid the big bucks” as if the money magically makes you be able to perform at top peak night after night. this after he mentioned how it is a fickle instrument so it annoyed him.
@Franckdatank Heavily agree! That comment the interviewer made towards Perry was CRINGE and Ignorant! You can throw ALL the MONEY in the EORLD at Perry & what he said is STILL going to happen NO MATTER WHAT (even when he was in his prime)! It's a physical limitation of the human body!
STEVE PERRY IS SOOOOOO INCREDIBLE AND A LEGEND. HIS VOICE WAS SOOOOOO FANTASTIC. I LOVE STEVE PERRY AND ALWAYS WILL."'JOURNEY HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY NUMBER ONE GROUP ❤️ 😊😅😮😢🎉😂❤❤❤❤
Journey was the first band I fell in love at age 14. I saw them twice in concert. After Steve left the band I refused to listen to anything new by Journey and I also said I wouldn't go to another concert. I recently did see Journey in Denver. Good show but not the same without Steve. Will always love Steve's voice and beautiful talent! I'm okay with the old Journey!!!
My favorite band of all time.....because of Steve Perry. I've listen since 1987 and always will. Perry has the most amazing voice hands down....to me...the best singer
My music journey will not be complete without you. Journey is simply amazing with your greatest voice of all time. Thanks Steve. Being enigma is fine, that's just a character. Wish you wonderful days ahead.
It's hard to imagine someone so talented could walk away from something that's wonderful!! He was blessed with a talent only very few could achieve!! Huge fan of him and the band! Incredible talent!!

Love that guy...such heart and soul. Really brightened up the world through his music. And Neal was the crazy cat, with that afro, bustin out the scorching licks! Also, loved the contrast in voices with Greg Rollie! "I'm standing here With my arms a mile wide"!
Yes, Steve does have one of the best voices in music history.
He knows! 😂
Steve Perry sounds better live than most rock singers sound in the studio. An absolute legend.
That's the truth regarding a great vocalist or an average one. He's the real deal

Absolutely! When you hear him sing, you know exactly who it is. An iconic and amazing voice.

In very elite company.

No One can replace Steve. Even Dan realizes that he is talking to the greatest voice in the world

Nope, he’s one in a hundred million.
One of the top 3 male vocalists in the world!!!!!!
Í wóuldnt go THAT far!😅
I love that he does not feel he needs to be with Journey his whole life. He moved on to another chapter. A lot of us can learn from this.
He’s a guy that understands the seasons of life. I don’t believe he enjoyed fame in the end. He doesn’t need notoriety for self actualization. He’s always been my favorite singer, loved Journey. So glad he found his peace.
Very true, but it doesn't hurt that he's set for life from the money he made and continues to make from royalties.
Steve’s answers are so deep without having minutes to think………Brilliant
You can tell he’s brilliant
I agree! Very articulate. Impressive!
Steve Perry is obviously such an intelligent and gracious man. He is the GOAT of rock singers.❤
