Surfboard restoration: crushed/sunken fin box

  • Fin boxes sit in a channel, or groove, that is cut out of the soft, foam core of your surfboard. When the surrounding foam compresses (often a result of striking a hard surface) the hard plastic fin box can become "delaminated" from the fiberglass, and appears sunken in. In this video I show you how to remove, and reset your fin box, the right way!

    I've been fixing boards since 1983. A couple steps could have been combined if you were in a time crunch like setting the box and reinforcing it with the fiberglass. Your repair job was really good! Props on the great video editing too. 🤙

      If you set it and glass it at the same time how are you going to measure the 6.5 degree can't. Or whatever the other fin is set at.

Side note everytime I buy a brand new board from this one surfshop in particular I always end up damaging it in such a way that I need to take it to a pro and its always in the first couple months of owning it lol its never happened to my machine shaped boards only the ones I really care about.

  • @joelgrandbois9327
    @joelgrandbois9327 5 месяцев назад

    To each his own but I'm curious why you didn't sand down the surrounding area after you pulled the box out.That way once the box is set you can glass it the same as you do on a fresh blank. That way there is more structural strength and you have two layers of glass and your hot level with the top of the box. That way the layer of gls and HT coat aren't higher than the box 14:49 . I could be wrong but I just can't see how your way is strong enough. Job looks great and good job on the video.🤙🏼

    Pretty Good with out all the Pro Tools available. You actually could have done you glass and Grind at the same time, then hot coat. Like if you were setting the fins when you shaped the board. But still pretty crafty work. 😀

    Oh man I feel like I just smoked a j after watching this whole video. So transfixed. Thank you for the great editing and the high attention to detail. Question: do you need to replace the whole fin box if the surrounding glass got cracked and is protruding?

    • @Rogue_wave
      @Rogue_wave  2 года назад +1

      Thank you! That's the vibe im going for. In response to your question: cracks aren't always indicative of needing to do a full replacement, but protruding fiberglass, or the box protruding through the fiberglass always is. Send me an emnail with a photo if you want more help! Dave@roguewaverepairs.com

      Thanks dude. Just use a cheap protractor to make sure the angle is right, and then set the box to where it sticks up about 1/8-1/4 of an inch. Gotta leave something to grind down.

    when you did the fiberglass cloth patch, did you glass it with lam resin or sanding? I noticed your sander was gunking up. Also I thought you cant sand down laminating resin?

    • @Rogue_wave
      @Rogue_wave  2 года назад

      I sand my laminations because it makes the hot coat come out much better. It does gum up your sandpaper though.

    It is a good fix... But filling in the futures flange with laminating resin only.. is not the correct install method. Should have used glass fibre then to connect the fin plug back to existing bottom glass.. Would have also saved another step of glassing over top and trimming out.. at gel stage as in video.. Other than that it's bang on great craftsmanship..

  • @suchen702
    @suchen702 2 года назад +1

    Great video man! quick question, How do you fix a future fin box that the hole is stripped? It gets traction when you start screwing in but almost at the end it keeps spinning and it never gets to the point where it secures the fin. thank you !!

    • @Rogue_wave
      @Rogue_wave  2 года назад +1

      Hi Su! have you tried using a new fin key? Older keys can get worn down from use, and then they don't fit snugly in the screw. For example, I just threw a fin key away yestreday because after a lot of use, it was starting to "strip" the fin screws, which sounds like the problem you're having. Hope this helps!

    • @hjml07
