Bodysurfing Handplanes Made from a Broken Surfboard

- Shaping and glassing bodysurfing handplanes out of the foam from a broken surfboard. Glassed with 4 oz E-Cloth on both the deck and bottom. Used Silmar polyester resin with mixed resin tint colors. The straps are made with FCS leash plugs, velcro and a neoprene handle wraps.
Handplanes help give a bodysurfer extra lift, reduces drag from your upper body and increases speed. A fun alternative to riding a wave.

I love surfing, building with my hands and making videos. Bendheim Boards is my outlet to fuel these passions. I'm self-taught and am not an expert, but these videos show the process that works for me. Follow along for new videos every month! Спорт
That’s an incredible amount of labor to put into something so small. I always made mine from wood scraps.
Amazing job. Much respect.
Thanks man! It is a lot of work, but a fun process.
When I was a kid I traveled to Oahu for the north shore contest and there was one day where the waves were just too big and too gnarlier; no one was out there. So we’re driving up the coast and I’m staring out the window when all of the sudden out in the heaviest surf I’ve ever seen (20+ ft) there’s one guy body surfing with one of these handplanes just charging out in it. I couldn’t believe it and neither could my father who pulled over to watch him for a while. Totally and completely badass. Watermen.
That’s awesome man! I can’t imagine body surfing a massive swell like that, would have been fun to see!
That's right partner...a true Waterman...
When was this? I used to live on the NS and I bodysurfed quite often at pipe.
In the 70's we had both the
"Handgun" and the
Hydrodisc"
Personally loved the disc and stiff Churchill Makapu's.........
It's all you need to be one with the ocean.........
And we just keep trying to replicate everything made in that era. Good stuff!
Born and raised here in Ocean Beach San Diego, I distinctly remember my mom introducing me to the guys of the Wind & Sea surf club. I'm 46 now, as a Grom whomping Marine Street and Wind & Sea after surf session it's just what you did. Then she brought me to Boomers Beach. This is where you show respect and ask to be taught how to really body surf. Like using fins & positioning your body but most of all referring to the video that you've made, using "Handguns". Some are really nice fiberglass and foam some were just trays. The point is handguns are another tool to help you progress in bodysurfing surfing. 🤙🌊
For sure man, thanks for weighing in! Lots of good surf down there!
I had a "handgun" wave tool it was really fun back before I knew how cold the water was, any way they really work great
Fascinating video producing works of art. The car detailing world would be envious of that finish. All that done in 7.06 mins superhuman!
I am a glasser too....this is a lot of work to do them I can tell for sure , as we see, not that many people would pay it's real value.
Glad you can appreciate the work it takes!
Incredibly satisfying to watch this. Both are sweet but I love the rootbeer fish!
Gorgeous!
Did this back in like '84 when I was a pimply little grom. Good fun and learnt heaps about board making. Even had channels and little twin fins. Good times.
Awesome man! Thanks for sharing!
They are things of beauty - a lot of work!
Impressive. The glossing stand had me Rollin. Kid nest door is trying to make these out of recycled coolers and trash from the beach. He will love this vid. Great job.
Thanks man, sounds like a fun project!
I would 100% buy one of these!
Epic work !
Wow 😳 what an amazing job you’ve done!! Way to repurpose an old board into something so stylish and unique!
Thanks man
Simply Satisfying ☺️
So good. I have a few broken boards under my house that I have some plans for. Thanks for making this.
Thanks man, always fun to up-cycle a broken board and find new use for them. Good luck!
Those are pretty sweet. Redwings Cleaver would be proud to see such awesome work.

Thank you sir!
Amazing work 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Good job! I loved it!
As a “clubbie” (surflifesaver), in New Zealand, during the 80’s & 90’s, body surfing is a sport we all did during and in-between competitions. What was very popular, and i had several, was a product similar to what you have here was the “Taylor’s Mistake” handski. Legendary gear.
Awesome man! Sounds like good times, thanks for commenting 🤙
Amazingly innovative
Dude what an amazing idea/design. You are a legend.

Way cool !
Great job! I've made them out of wood, but would love to try out of an old board. Great stuff.
Thanks man, it was a fun project. I'm planning to eventually make one out of wood or an old skateboard deck. Appreciate the feedback!
@@BendheimBoards I made mine out of an old book shelf that had lived outside in the elements for years. Still use it all the time. Skateboard decks seem to work nicely too. Have fun with it. Peace.
Cool! Admirable! Talent, creativity and recycling 😘🤗🙏 subscribed!

Great job! Congrats!
I've shared this video in Brazil. You'll have some views from there. Which brand of handplane do you recommend? Thanks.
Awesome, thanks for the support! I just make my own, so I don't have a specific brand I could recommend.
Meus parabéns pelo seu trabalho!
Sensacional 👏👏👏 🇧🇷
Obrigado cara! 🇧🇷
very good job !!!!
Thanks man!
Just awesome, I'd love love one for my home office desk
Is unfair there is only the "like" button, there has to be an option to put "Love it".
Beautiful work, buddy.
Greetings from Argentina, love your work!
Thanks for the kind words my friend! 🇦🇷

I want one this.
Awesome! That’s all I can say.

Fuqin nice dude!
Thanks man!
Parabéns pelo trabalho, ficaram lindas

Obrigado cara!
Sweet...
Great post thanks. Classic surfboard construction, as I recall it from my own amateur efforts in the 1970s. Have you ever been tempted to add a proportional size fin/s? Should think it would add some inline drive to the performance. And it would look cool!
I haven’t seen any with them. They work really well without them that I don’t think they’re necessary. Would be interesting to try though!

Aloha from Maui.
You are an amazing technician.
Aloha ke Akua
Mahalo! I love Maui!
Your boards are so nice. These are cool too. All the best!
It would be cool to have a picnic table made out of old boards!
Make one!
@@BendheimBoards thanks.
Supercool
You are a real artist and quite skilled. I was wondering if rather than planing away essentially half the original board thickness, if you could make two hand planes from the same cutout. Just a thought. Thanks for the great video!
Yup, next time I’ll try it out. Gonna be a little tricky cutting through the length of the stringer.
Nice work. My son has made some from cedar.
Awesome!
8 months ago...the start of COVID. Very cool. Wonder what the rest of the world is making. I am working on a time machine!
😂 awesome man, come pick me up pre 2020
@@BendheimBoards that is my plan! Do over 2020!
Mean! I like How you did the strap's and plugs, how about skim board's?
May need extra strength 💪Thanks for sharing 🙏
Haven’t made a skimboard before but maybe sometime down the line 🤙
Gorgeous plates, good job man 💯🏄🗜️📐👌 if you don't mind me asking, how much do you sell this pair for? Or is it just a board repurposing project?
Thanks man, just a fun project for myself 🤙
He is an artist. He deserves 10.
Perfeição é a palavra. Ficou muito bom o trabalho. Da gosto de ver o trabalho. Matou a pau. Kkkkkkkkkkk
Obrigado cara! Estou feliz que você gostou 🤙

Hi love the vids want to see you test them out
Sorry I don’t have in water footage
Dude...you're master..
No improvisation...pure experience.
How can one purchase a hand plane??
Thanks man! I don’t sell them but you can find them at local surf shops or online.
👏👏🔥🔥👏👏
I got inspired by this and made my own. Right now I'm installing the (FCS)leash plugs with a forstner bit. Do you recommend using a size larger than 1" for the initial hole?
Honestly I’m not sure the size of my drill bit but I got it from shaper supply and they have it listed on their website.
Such an inspiring clip! Beautiful craftsmanship. One question, where or how to you make the neoprene part that goes around the velcro?
They are neoprene luggage handle wraps that I found on Amazon 🤙
@@BendheimBoards Legend! Thanks Tanner, I found them. Yew!
they look so sick where did you get the hand straps from?
Thanks, I used velcro and neoprene handle wraps (for luggage) that I found on Amazon.
wOw😱
Hi dude nice planes wanna make one soon!
🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
Can you send the link for the neoprane handles and the velcro from amazon please?
I wanna make one hehehe!
Anyway thanks have a nice one!
I body whomp Nazare when it's 50' - 90' so I don't really have a problem with upper body drag. I'm also sponsored by KoolKind wetuits. I shred the gnar, brah. 🤙

That's some pretty nice art here!
But i wonder how do you clean the board out of the resin!?
Thanks! But not sure I don’t understand your question.
Sorry i'll try again
Is it possible to recycle old board by cleaning the board, by " un-glassing" it? Leaving only the base of the board to reshape
Sorry if i'm not very clear, i miss some technical words ^^
Yes, you can strip off the fiberglass, reshape the foam and then re-glass it. I’ve seen it usually where a longboard is stripped and a shorter board is shaped and glassed from the original foam.
I just made one, but haven’t glassed it yet, what type of epoxy do I use? And where would I find the leash plugs?
Keatons Korner I haven’t worked with epoxy before so I wouldn’t be able to answer that. I use polyester resin. If you live near Orange County, you can get your supplies from FoamEZ. If not, you can order online from shapersupply.com. Both sell resins, leash plugs and any other needed surf supplies. Good luck!
Wow, how much do they sell for at a surfboard shop ??? They look like a lot of fun out on the water!
Not sure, lots of different types. I actually haven’t seen fiberglass ones in shops, just wood and plastic. Plez Planes sells his online for around $150. The plastic ones are probably pretty cheap.
Tanner- great vid. Do you do two coats of filler resin?
Thanks man. Hot coat and gloss coat.
