Bodysurfing Handplanes Made from a Broken Surfboard

  • Shaping and glassing bodysurfing handplanes out of the foam from a broken surfboard. Glassed with 4 oz E-Cloth on both the deck and bottom. Used Silmar polyester resin with mixed resin tint colors. The straps are made with FCS leash plugs, velcro and a neoprene handle wraps.
    Handplanes help give a bodysurfer extra lift, reduces drag from your upper body and increases speed. A fun alternative to riding a wave.

    When I was a kid I traveled to Oahu for the north shore contest and there was one day where the waves were just too big and too gnarlier; no one was out there. So we’re driving up the coast and I’m staring out the window when all of the sudden out in the heaviest surf I’ve ever seen (20+ ft) there’s one guy body surfing with one of these handplanes just charging out in it. I couldn’t believe it and neither could my father who pulled over to watch him for a while. Totally and completely badass. Watermen.

    Born and raised here in Ocean Beach San Diego, I distinctly remember my mom introducing me to the guys of the Wind & Sea surf club. I'm 46 now, as a Grom whomping Marine Street and Wind & Sea after surf session it's just what you did. Then she brought me to Boomers Beach. This is where you show respect and ask to be taught how to really body surf. Like using fins & positioning your body but most of all referring to the video that you've made, using "Handguns". Some are really nice fiberglass and foam some were just trays. The point is handguns are another tool to help you progress in bodysurfing surfing. 🤙🌊

      Is it possible to recycle old board by cleaning the board, by " un-glassing" it? Leaving only the base of the board to reshape
      Sorry if i'm not very clear, i miss some technical words ^^

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  3 года назад

      Yes, you can strip off the fiberglass, reshape the foam and then re-glass it. I’ve seen it usually where a longboard is stripped and a shorter board is shaped and glassed from the original foam.

  • @keatonskorner4547

      Keatons Korner I haven’t worked with epoxy before so I wouldn’t be able to answer that. I use polyester resin. If you live near Orange County, you can get your supplies from FoamEZ. If not, you can order online from shapersupply.com. Both sell resins, leash plugs and any other needed surf supplies. Good luck!
