When I was a kid (55 years ago), we pulled our little travel trailer from Chicago to Los Angeles when my brother came back from Viet Nam. We spent 4 full weeks on the road and it's still the most memorable trip ever. We saw Grand Canyon, and it is positively glorious. I really want to go back. We saw the redwoods of California and continued up the coast to Washington. My Dad always like to get on the road early, so we were up by 5:30 in the morning and on the road. About 9 am we would stop somewhere for Mom to make breakfast in the camper. Same for lunch. I got really good at reading road maps and the Woodalls camper guide! Back then, Mom and Dad preferred the cheaper campgrounds that only cost about $2/night back then. My sister and I always looked for the KOA or Jellystone campgrounds, but those cost about $6/night. Bummer. We wanted places that had swimming and hot clean showers. State/Nat'l parks were usually only about $.50-$1.00/night back then. And gas was only about $.20/gallon back then as well.

Brings back great childhood memories of when my dad and I traveled all over the west. The beauty of These plateau/mountains made me cry even at the age of 7. We also prepared and cooked our own meals. My dad was a chef by trade. Yum!

When I moved from Washington to Virginia I posted it online on a site I was a member of to see if anyone wanted to meet along the route for coffee or lunch. No one was interested along the route I originally planned but lots wanted to meet up in other locations. I ended up driving through and meeting up with individuals or groups in Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, new Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia and finally Virginia. Made a couple of trips to a smaller number of states after that. These were all wonderful trips but I do wish I had taken more time to get to know the people I met more as well as more time sightseeing. Recommend. That type of trip for all. Doubt I will do something so frivolous again even though I enjoyed it immensely.

Bless your family for taking this epic journey and all the memories that you made. Thanks for sharing. It really brought me back to our familys epic journey through the west. Our kids were young, and a little cranky, and it was cramped and uncomfortable at times. How much money it cost, and how much it hurt to spend it. Today I treasure those memories deeply because we lost our son just two years later and we were so happy that we had that experience with him while he was with us. Treasure the memories you made with your family, because they truly are precious.

Kathy did you make any videos of your trips? If I travel that far and that many states I would make darn sure that I made some videos of it. Parents and I made a trip when I was a Youngster and my parents made still pictures about our trip from Illinois to Arkansas & then onto to New Mexico to look At some on property and then took the scenic route up to Colorado & then back to Iowa to visit the Amana Colonies after stopping in Colorado to see my grandmother. My father took a full week vacation from work. All six of us kids went on that trip and we were packed like sardines in a can in an old 1950 Ford automobile. I am somewhat envious of the trips that you have taken throughout the states.

Thank you for sharing your adventure and for stepping outside your comfort zone on that challenging hike. Such fun to watch! Lacey's photography managed to capture the essence of the vastness and beauty of the natural environment. I can relate to that speechless breathlessness felt when we are astounded by the wonders of creation that are new to us. It is easy to see the glory when we step into the open to witness the magnitude of existence and realize that we are a small part of that greatness. All praise to The Creator.

Zion and Bryce Canyon are one of my favorite places on earth! Growing up we traveled cross country each summer in a station wagon with my folks and 3 or 4 kids depending on who went, and we camped at KOA campgrounds most nights with our tent. We were a team when it came to setting up and breaking down our camp, cooking gear and tent. I have vivid memories of so many states, and the natural wonders of each one. We would take a different route each trip so we could see more of the country. You are building great memories with your children.

Seeing the boys push on the rock reminds me of a story the pastor told---The Unmoved Rock---about a man that was told by God to push on a rock, day after day, but it wouldn't budge. Later God told him that he didn't ask the man to move the rock, just push against it. The man became strong and God moved the rock. Awesome Story. Thanks for sharing your journey.

I am so glad yall got to travel cross country! It will change your perspective on so many things. We have traveled cross country all the way to Washington state for 2 summers now and it's been the best thing we ever did. We did it just like yall did. No hotels. We visit farms and homesteads, and in between we do state campgrounds and hipcamp. Airbnb does have ppl that offer campsites, van and RV spots and we've also used the Wwoofer site, which is amazing! Of course yall are probably a little past that part of needing to find someone to host you, I'm sure homesteads would line up for the chance. We're getting there! Year by year we meet more folks needing help starting this dream. it also helps that we have the homestead/permaculture consulting business, which has been how we have stayed alot of places for trade. We have stayed in amazing places in Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Washington, Montana, we got to see the Young Living farm in Utah, so many more too. We earn money while we travel so it doesn't cost us hardly anything. Summer gardening in NC is not my favorite, I definitely don't mind taking that break midsummer to escape for a month or 2. I'm just happy yall are getting to travel! Homesteadingbis hard work and one of our biggest issues w homesteading was never being able to go away. I feel like we cracked the code after tears of learning how to make it happen. Maybe one day we could plan a group homesteaders camping soiree!! I would be all for that!

4 of us traveled through Tasmania in a Camper van, with a shower and toilet as well as a kitchen and it was so inexpensive since we shared the cost. Awesome 7 day trip I will never forget as one sees the real country. We booked nothing ahead, just found campsites and plugged camper in. Yes it had electricity. It is the best way to travel any country in my opinion. We went swimming in Lake Kyle and took a ferry accross and then walked 11 km back to campsite, we did a lot of exploratory walks. We had a full kitchen so made our own meals and only went to eat out once as a treat. We saved our money to go in an Aqua plane over the rain forests. Camping or glamping is my style, I am not a hotel person. I would do Air BnB or self catering for sure

We live camping, and being out in nature. There are so many gorgeous places to see. Good thing you went when temperatures were cooler otherwise, you may have run into snakes, spiders, and scorpions.

I live in my van. And pull a utility trailor with my extra food and supplies. And I have plenty of solar on top. I'm a van dweller fore the past two years.

Yes the west does have some spectacular scenery. As long as you are looking at it from inside of an air conditioned vehicle. Many places that look so great are also places that a human can not live. Such as Zion.

Also since your farmers check out peach trees that grew in the SW mainly on Navajo reservation. There is a woman that is trying to restore them, Reagan Wytsalucy. Interesting read.

That was quite the adventure! Glad you're all home safely 🙏.
I never would have made it as a pioneer heading west. I need my mtns and pine trees. When I flew in to Vegas I thought the desert made it look Mars. If ever you get the chance, there are 'grand canyons of the east' in PA and NY. 👍

KOA’s are awesome. I live in AZ and there are a lot of inexpensive campgrounds here, including, free, dispersed camping. I kept watching to see if you came down towards the Prescott area! Looks like you went back thru one of our national forests. Everyone thinks we are all desert. Love seeing meal prep in the van. It’s a better way to eat anyway, right? Teardrop trailer for date night? 😂 And also for a getaway with each kid for a special weekend. I still tent camp but am almost ready to keep everything packed and just go. Thanks for sharing!✌🏼❤️

So glad you enjoyed Utah! Highway 89 is my favorite, and Emerald Pool (the lower) is my favorite Zion hike. (And I agree that the Grand Canyon is more than the brain can take in. 😬 ) I’m glad you had a safe and fun trip!!!
